Judy Blume's books meant so much to me growing up, especially this one. I read it in the 4th or 5th grade, in the mid 80's, and I remember reading about the pad "belts" and having no clue what they were. LOL. I had to ask my mom wtf they were, and she explained to me that they hadn't yet invented the self-adhesive kind that sticks to your panties in 1970.🤣

Me too! 😂 My Mom had given me some "period talks" to prepare me. But then when I actually got it and she started bringing out the self-stick panty liners and pads, I asked, "What about the belt?" Like your Mom I'm sure, my Mom explained it but also was like How do you even know about that?! By then I was old enough to say I'd read "Are You There God It's Me, Margaret." At the time I actually read it, we passed it around SECRETLY. 😂

@@jenniferbaumgarden9293 My Mom mostly did ecourage any reading, too, but somehow that book was "secret" from the adults. 😂 At least until I actually had my period then told her I'd read it years before. 😂 Omg, Stephen King in 3rd grade? I definitely went through a big SK phase starting in grammar school but don't think I started that young. 😮 😁 OTOH, I read Helter Skelter, the book about Charles Manson, one summer during grammar school and my Mom totally knew I was. It is pretty funny, looking back. I don't have kids but I'd probably be same with a kid like me. I was just always a reader, one that would just devour as many books as I could get my hands on! She did somewhat oversee what I was reading and most books I was reading openly so it was mostly fine, then sometimes she would be like, WAIT, what's THAT?!

Me too! I devoured Judy Blume books when I was a child. ❤

I am so excited to see this movie! As a preteen, my girlfriends and I would trade Ms. Blume's books and giggle over the very relatable situations. I love that Ms. Judy was involved in the production too, it makes it even more special.

I read this in school and wrote a book report. The best part is my mom still has the report! 😂😩 That woman keeps everything !! lol 😂 Can’t wait to see this movie. Great review. Thank you !!

I loved her books as a kid. I have fond memories of riding my bike to the library during the summer and having the freedom to pick out what i wanted.

My English teacher made us read the book in sixth grade. I loved it. It was so relatable at that time. I’m glad to hear you liked the movie. I definitely will be checking it out 😊

I read this book too it was not assigned, but I found it in the school library. Yes, it was so relatable. Soon as I saw the previews I thought "We must We must We must increase our bust" 😂😂😂😂 Nice memory 😊

I read this book in 5th grade, I think? All I really remember is “ we must, we must we must increase our bust”. 😂😂😂. Was she half Jewish/ half Christian in the book? So strange bc my grandmother was Jewish and my grandfather was Methodist. Momma was raised Methodist and now for confusion married my daddy the Baptist. I was raised in the Baptist church. But every year at Christmas/ Chanukah we went the Seder Super at the temple. This film looks cute. The girl playing Margaret was in so precious in Forever My Girl. That was a very sweet movie.

This was just an overall good movie, never felt boring and I’m glad they never had any overly sappy moments (they always feel forced). Also, wasn’t Kathy Bates perfect!???

I’ve never read the book but I recall seeing it around when I was a kid. I always hated church…I never believed any of the stories. I was told all the stuff I loved on tv was not real with the fantastical adventures but the fantastical stories in church were real. I could have used a book like this. Has this ever been adapted before ?

Her books in the past have been routinely on the banned list for this or that, my experience is not for very long. Growing up, I read the book not knowing it was on the school banned list because I literally got it from the town library, no one ever busted me out, but I learned at a young age about the book banned list and always made a b line to the list to go check out those books 🤷‍♀️ Back in the 70s it was an instant list of the world lit. Which was especially difficult to find in the suburbs of the 70s.

Omg. I love you both. I wanted to see this movie just from trailer "we must increase our bust." after your review i want to watch it even more. Not giving my age away. Lol. I remember being separated from boys in fourth grade. The teachers made it feel secretive but exciting. Then omg. The pictures that had us squealing. Then one of these classes we caught the boys peaking through a back window and we all got up screaming. They just laughed and took off running as teacher went to hallway and yelled. " if you do that again. Your going to the principals office. Thanks for the honest reviews.

I read this book over and over as a kid and loved it. The movie really captures the essence of the story. I was that girl--the last of the friend group to develop and get 'it.' And it was the 80s, so no social media. It was a different time. I ugly cried through the whole movie. It was❤ perfect ❤❤.

I enjoyed this movie waaaay more than i should’ve. Ever had that moment when you become so immersed in a movie that you realize it will soon end. That empty feeling of slight dread. Yeah. I got that. Wonderfully acted and written. 😍😍😍 Margaret is my hero!!!!!

This seems perfectly constructed for the women in the family, on Mother's Day *and* Daughter's Day etc! I'm only a young reader of Enid Blyton (before Harry Potter! - because the School Library had full volumes - so, popular - most were donated out of love to share😉😊

At least this gives context to that Deadpool joke.

The documentary is soooo good and timely (as in the nightmare of current MAGA banning books)

Great review. Curious, Nick, what did you not like about the book as you said in the beginning the movie was adapted from not so great literature. I vaguely remember reading it as a kid.

He said it was adapted from "what I consider to be a very important piece of literature". Glad to see he feels that way. A little painful to realize his mother's about my age (read the book in the 70s, too)
