Well I’m slightly short-sighted (-1 for both eyes) and before I didn’t usually wear glasses for example when I was on computer. But around a year ago I started to have double vision and eventually got glasses with prism correction which helped me a LOT. And nowadays I’m using glasses basically all day.

I started wearing glasses for myopia when I was thirteen. For many years I only needed a single vision lens for distance and could still read with my glasses on. Presbyopia started in the 40s of course and eventually I lost the ability to read without correction. Since then I've been wearing varifocal aka progressive lenses since I need correction for both near and distance. Although progressives introduce distortion in the peripheral vision I've gotten used to them; it's a workable compromise that's way better than bifocals.

Your glasses are really nice. Glad that you didn't have them made huge like most frames these days. I have nearsightedness (that's usually what they call it here in the U.S. -myopia) around -7.5 to -8, farsightedness (presbyopia around -2), astigmatism, and diplopia (double vision). I am difficult to fit and need small frames (ideally low bridge/Asian fit) which are hard to find, even have a few kids frames but they are too small. My prescription recently went from 17 prism to 23. I have single vision glasses for computer and "limited use" (can't use like most due the prism) progressives with Transitions. Frame selection (size, shape, overall fit) has been critical for me, as are proper adjustments. I was wondering if you would cover that in this video but then I guess it's not so critical for "common" problems. Smaller size and rounder frame shapes cut a lot of lens bulk, weight and distortion. After decades of opticians/labs refusing to fill my Rx in wire frames, my new optician prefers them for me and they make a huge difference, especially the ones with an acetate lens area to hide thickness. Best of both worlds. Also, pushing the nose pads closer to the face makes a huge difference as well. I had the lenses of one put into a wire/acetate frame from big acetate and will likely do the same with the other pair.

@@thespectaclefactory Yes, it is challenging. The biggest problem continues to be frames. The lab freaked out about the new progressives so they sat for a month until new Zeiss lenses came out. Turned out great. Actually, that frame is no longer working so well. But everything is changing, might be getting better and new lenses with fewer prism soon! I'm thinking new frames if possible. If you happen to see any nice small frames in the near future it would be great if you could show them. A video for older people with graying hair would be nice. People keep saying brown is bad for gray hair or rimless can make you look old. Also blue or gold. Limits my choices even more, I'm 58. Considering rimless because the optician can make them almost any size and shape he wants. But of course my lenses will never be as thin as yours.

Did a recent eye test and my right eye is SPH -1.00, CYL -1.25, AX 9 and my left is SPH +0.25, CYL -0.25 AX 167. I use my right eye to see near and my left eye to see far. Not wearing any glasses....although I did have 1 made more than 20 years ago which I stopped wearing after a few months and used a contact lens on my right master eye when I had to do some rifle range shooting.

Hi Robert. Great Content👍 I love those custom Reykjavik eyes that your'e wearing in this video especially with the blue tinted lenses. I'm interested in picking some up but was wondering if theres a maximum prescription for that particular style? My prescription is (-4.75 Left eye) (-5.25 Right Eye). I have worn Moscot Lemtosh for the past few years but I really love the look of those that you are wearing and It would be a welcome relief to wear a lighter pair of glasses as the moscots are quite bulky and heavy to wear all day everyday. My vision best corrected is 20/800 I'm counting fingers blind at 5 feet

I'm short and long, and I have an astigmatism. I wear varifocals but i don't like reading anymore. For some reason I don't mind reading on my phone.

I’m short sighted and a few years ago had to get progressive lenses. Was never happy with them even though I got the best from hoya. It’s more comfortable for me to take my glasses off to read my iPad or phone. So looking forward to switching to Zeiss. I do a lot of arms length and closer stuff and the smartlife comes in a version that’s perfect for that. The individual N in canada.

Very good video. This is hard to articulate, so apologies. Is a weak prescription wearer more likely to need new glasses more often than someone with a stronger prescription? Does that question make sense?

It makes sense. I think the answer is yes. My reasoning is that 0.50 change might represent a 100% increase in a small prescription but 10% change in a high prescription

Of course, it's possible to be both shortsighted and longsighted, like those who need bifocals.

I had every good eyesight and did not need any glasses until I hit my early forties then needed reading glasses and then around two years ago in my early fifties I found I now needed glasses not only for reading but also a little for long distance (I was told I shouldn't be driving without them!). Is this called Presbyopia?

It's presbyopia but with some short or longsightedness as well

8:00 Is that why the optometrist always says, ‘is it sharper or just smaller and darker?’. Because people will preference more on the minus side?

Hi Robert, thanks for the video! I currently wear glasses all the time and I use them for both distance and reading computer and books. I recently got my eyes checked and they gave me a new prescription. I am wondering if I will still be able to use the glasses for everything (without having them make them into varifocals). Do you think I will be able to? I am 47 and my new prescription is -3.75 and -.50 with some astigmatism in both eyes. I am scared to get varifocals so I am hoping you will say that the single prescription lens would still be okay for me. Any thoughts you have are much appreciated!

Hey, I'd love to comment but there just isn't enough info there for me to make a judgement. What's your add? And what was your prescription change. Honestly the worst thing is to put off wearing varifocals as the longer you leave it the harder they are to adjust to. I'm not aware of that being the case tbh, but I guess it has to do with the high curvature of plus powered lenses

Interesting video, however I wish people would stop calling Hyperopia- Farsighted. That is a misnomer, in fact alot of Hyperopic people cannot see well in the distance. This is especially true when Presbyopia hits, and most Hyperopic patients struggle to see both near and far. Many young people with high Hyperopia cannot see well far or near. Yes most Hyperopes distance vision is less blurry at distance then then near, but calling the condition farsighted is a bit misleading.

I totally get your point, but terms like hyperopia etc are hard for the public to understand - I think it's our job to make eyecare accessible so people can be more involved in the process of choosing their glasses. But technically, you are absolutely correct. Would you suggest an alternative terms?

@@thespectaclefactory The proper term should just be called Hyperopia, but how it affects a person who has is needs to be explained thoroughly. Your video is great, and I'm not trying discredit it, but people with Hyperopia can often misunderstand how it will progress, because simply put the information is just not out there like Myopia. This is my experience with understanding Hyperopia, as I was recently diagnosed with it (I'm older and experiencing Presbyopia). I had no idea that my distance vision will be blurred as well, in the not too distant future. Mainly because information on the web seems to think Hyperopes see well in the distance.

Because in fact I’m 17 and am Hyperopic also with astigmatism and I cannot see words from far away like when I’m sitting in class and I cannot see the board even if I was sitting in the front! Now that I have glasses I can finally see clearly! Although I think I’m just now realizing that my glasses might be a little big for me…

the glasses u r wearing is it 15 or 25% tinted? is it ok to wear tinted glass for daily use?thanks

Are glasses from specsavers good quality for the money?

Having had Specsavers verifocals for the past two years and recently switching to Zeiss Smartlife Individuals, I would say yes for the money they are good. The specsavers cost me around 400€ but that was for two pairs of glasses with the frames so I got one clear and one pair in sunglasses. Their top of the range version comes in two forms, one for driving and one more suitable for computer work. I had both, the ones for the computer were great for working on the computer but weren't so good for long distance and driving especifically when you turn your head to the far left or right you would get distortion and to see correctly I had turn my head left or right and down a bit! I changed both glasses to the ones more suitable for driving and they were brilliant at all tasks except computer work for which I had another cheap pair from them. The Zeiss smartlife Individuals which I got this year cost me over 800€ and that is just for one pair of glasses with frames, they are better than the Specsavers, e.g. I dont need to change to computer glasses on most occasions, only when doing intense work for long time such as spread sheets etc and have good long distance and peripheral vision, they also do not have a yellowish tint which the Specsavers had which I found annoying sometimes for colour accuracy and finally they have UV protection even in clear lenses which the Specsavers do not. But overall for the cost which is much much less, I would say Specsavers are good value for money.

I personally think for a Specsavers price you can get better. For example, at around £250 I could give you a Gast or Eco frame with a Hoya lens, and both the frame and lens would be superior to Specsavers.

@@thespectaclefactory Is the Hoya lens progressive? I didn't think you could get Hoya progressive for that little. When I enquired here I was getting quoted around 800 to 1100€ for Hoya.
