I said the same thing until I got a Shih Tzu. Guess what? There's nothing closer to having a toddler. He's now my baby.

My baby girl is a Shih Tzu and she is the highlight of my day when I get home from work. She waits on our retaining wall knowing about what time I get home. She is spoiled and usually gets what she wants. She loves truck rides and every few days will sit by the back door and growl and bark until I give in to give her the truck ride, my wife just shakes her head. No a single night goes by that she doesn't follow me to bed and is always on my pillow resting her head on my neck. Unfortunately she tends to wake me on occasion as she snores. Wouldn't trade her for anything. She is my buddy.

I had a Shih Tzu too. Not exactly a man's dog but I loved that dog like nothing else. Small package, huge personality! They truly are the best companions

Mace is one of the best looking Shih Tzu dogs I have ever seen. I love his coat and the trim you have on him. Great job!

I'm a shih tzu mom my fur baby name is Mr.Winter August Nelson. His birthday is November 9, he will be 4 years old. We celebrate by having him a little birthday party. We had him since he was 6 weeks old he is very attache to me. I love my fur baby very much!

Shih tzu don't get less cute, when they grow up. My cutie is 2 years old and is still as cute, as a puppy (or even more :)). But she won't even look at dog food...

Awe he's such a sweet heart. He's definitely cute, and behaved well for the duration of your video. Thank you for sharing information about him, I'm still learning about the shih tzu breed. My mom was traveling on a busy highway and she seen a small bundle of fur running against oncoming traffic. She turned around and caught up to the bundle of fur, and as soon as she opened her car door a small black anf white dog jumped in. He was shaking, dirty, hungry, and scared. She tried asking around the area at businesses and such if anyone had lost a dog and she left information for anyone searching for this dog. It's been nearly 6 months and no one has claimed him. So we've just tried our best to make him feel comfortable. We're still learning about him and getting to know him so watching your video has helped me a lot.

So nice of your mom! I had a similar thing. 1) Many years ago, one ran across a Texas highway ramp. I used my car to stop traffic but he kept running. 2) Recently, one ran leash-less from the sidewalk into the street in NYC. A crowd of people and I stopped traffic with our bodies to save him. It's a good feeling to at least try.

Random fact: Shih Tzu stands for little lion. I'm sure you knew that!

Watching mace blink makes my heart happy 🥺

My Shih Tzu, Delilah, gets really bad separation anxiety when we're apart, as do I. She just turned 5 and I've also had her since she was 8 weeks old and she was also a gift. Love of my life! She can be very cheeky and covetous of my attention though. I just dumped my boyfriend because he called her an " overgrown rat". Unacceptable! Mace is adorable!

aw i always said if i get a girl shih tzu ill name her Delilah! just because of the song “Hey there Delilah” and because it’s a biblical girl name! aweeee your shih tzu is my dream dog! lol😂😂💓💓💓😩😛

I've had now 3 Shih Tzus and if needed will get another one. True, you pay about 80 to get her groomed. That would include bath, hair cut, ear cleaning, tooth brushing, clipped nails and a special spray. I do it about once in 3-4 months. Shih Tzus' hair does NOT shed. Instead of shedding they will mat. They are the sweetest dogs in the world but she will bite if they feel I am threatened in any way. Sasha is social but very protective. They can be very HARD headed about doing things they don't want to do but she does come around to do them. She's much bigger than most Shih Tzus… 25 pounds. Chubby and need to walk her more. I love my dogs more than anything in this world. Low maintenance except for grooming. Cha-ching.

You did a wonderful job with this video and I really enjoyed watching Mace’s face and actions...he is a handsome, charming little guy! He has the most expressive eyes. He seemed to listen intently as you talked; I laughed out loud when he almost climbed onto the jar of peanut butter and the peanut butter cupcakes! You are absolutely the best loving dog Mom ever!!!

I think you look so genuinely happy when with with Mace, I sooooooo want a dog in my life!!

My mom has a shih tzu and most people are like "aww he's so cute I want a shih tzu" but they don't know how high maintenance shih tzu's can be. They require a lot of grooming and having their hair trimmed and brushed. Otherwise they look a bit crazy. They can dislike new people. Often growling/ barking at new people. Sure they are quite docile and loving once they get attached to someone (my mom) but if that someone leaves they can have EXTREME separation anxiety. A while back my mom had to leave for a couple days, but after the third day of HOWLING and screaming at the top of his lungs all night because she left. She had to come back home. It was insane. So I honestly don't suggest getting a shih tzu if you are super social, or your job requires you to be away from home for a long period of time. Do your research before getting a dog. Because you are then responsible to provide for their individual needs.

Your moms Shih Tzu sounds like he's spoiled! They do get attached and if a person doesn't work outside of the home, it may be very stressful if they have to leave for a while, but 9 times out of 10 they'll get over it soon!!

I’ve had three Shih Tzu’s , each had their own personalities and unfavourable issues but that’s dog ownership. As with ANY breed a dog is a product of his or her environment, they will behave in ways that they have been taught. Shih Tzu’s are a high maintenance dog in the fact that they require regular grooming (hair needs to be brushed daily as you would brush your own hair). They should see a groomer every 4-6 weeks for a “full groom.” They are a strong headed, stubborn breed that requires someone with some experience with dogs to train properly. All of this you will have an appropriately behaved Shih Tzu and a well mannered dog you can take anywhere. Unfortunately, because they are a small dog a lot of people “baby” them and they become “problem” dogs. They get carried around, put in purses, not socialized with other people or pets, don’t get regular exercise, get rewarded for ill behaviour, don’t get proper (basic) training, etc. All these things added up will leave you with a situation like what your Mom’s dog does. Shih Tzu’s are a wonderful breed for the right people. Sometimes, their flipping adorable little faces get them the wrong fit for them. Then you find a frustrated owner and dog. Both a sad situation for such a lovely, wonderful little breed with a rich history.

I have had two shih tzus and I've never had any of those problems. They don't bark at new people, one of them greets them very happily and the other just hides. They don't have separation anxiety.

How cute & how sweet!!! I keep my twins cut low too. Way too hot & muggy here. He is precious!! Shih Tzus are very 'owner oriented.' They think they are put on earth to serve their Master!! They learn quickly too! Which I love.

Born on the same day as my Baby Lulu but she is only four months old .. he is so cute .. I can’t explain how much I love my only dog too and my first dog ..

Hi sweetie, I have a Havenees Daisy and my Misty passed away a month ago. She was a Multzue. She was my baby girl and I miss her sooo much. She was 11 and had a heart problem. Our pups enjoy anything chicken. Daisy likes peanut butter . Macy sounds like my Misty. She was so independent in most things. She was my service dog. Thank you for sharing your information and Mace. Awww! Look at the sweet baby! I have a 5 y.o. Shih-Tsu and I LOVE him! He's all black and I've had him since he was 8 wks. Thank goodness I took him for training early on (to train me). He has separation anxiety when I take him to the vet or groomer. He was so angry when I picked him up from his first grooming that he snubbed me and rushed me out the door. Now, I groom him but, of course, I still have to take him to the vet! He stops walking when we get inside Petsmart because he knows the vet is located in the back of the store 😅. When he is not happy about something, he will come to a dead stop and stare me in my eyes. His big eyes are so expressive! He is a good communicator as he definitely knows his mealtime, potty time and bedtime schedules and is honestly just the sweetest thing alive.

A smart Shih Tzu is like a night and day difference. One I had, had no separation anxiety. When ever I left the house, she'd just go in her bed and sleep until I'd come back then we'd go for walk and do some activity together. That way, waiting is just part of something to look forward to when I go out. When a stranger comes, she's the first to greet them by sitting in front of the door and lead them to me when the greet is over. She can tell when someone is talking to her or wanting to pet/touch her and no issues when they enter through the main door. She usually can tell between a guest and intruder by observing something out of the norm. I once entered the house through the basement and the moment I opened the basement door she sprang in to action by barking like crazy. When she recognized that it was me, she stopped barking but I never knew a dog can do that by sensing something out of norm.

Lol..he was like if you don't give me a treat already! What a cutie 😍😍

I never really acknowledged shih tzus before since I’m more of a big dog person (even though I have a Yorkie lmao) but I met one today and I AM IN LOVE. I cannot they’re so fluffffy

He’s adorable 😍. Our dogs are so much alike. My dog is a shih tzu too and we rescued him. He understand almost everything your dog understands but when we say give me kiss he growls 😂

They do get anxious when away from their Mum or Dad.. I used to look after my families Lao Chen (a very similar breed), would be about 5 days before he would stop pining and start to get back to "normal", and we actually used to get along well too! They tend to have a favorite person who they latch onto, when they aren't there they are really down.. Lovely animals anyway - Mace is very handsome!

My shi Tzus name is summer . She bites a lot, is a very hyper puppy , she's 8 or 9 weeks, and she keeps getting stepped on because she walks to close to you, with this she loves meeting new people, and loves to play

Aww mace you are too cute! He is totally listening and probably understands everything you’re saying lol. Dogs are honestly the best. I have a very spoiled Pekingese and I love her to death!

I have had four Shih Tzus in my life, currently I only have one that has not gone to heaven yet, and they are quite some characters. The big old buggy eyes, fluffy tails, crazy zoomies, prancing on walks, kisses until your face is peeled of from the tongue, and best yet .... cuddle time. that's just a minor example of the awesomeness of these dogs. I miss all three of mine dearly that have went to heaven. and my boy who still alive is such an a****** but he's my bug eyed giant crazy boy ( he's the larger size of the males white /red with the stoner red rimmed eyes,nose, and the cool reddish brown eyes . my other 3 boys were the smaller) . Your little man is adorable and I'm in love !!!!

I rescued a beautiful shih Tzu dog last year from Romania xxx. When I rescued Tara she was 2.5 years old. I have had Tara for a year. She's the best dog I have ever had. When I go to the shops. Tara sits on the window sill until I come back home. I always bring Tara a nice treat from the shops. Then when I put the shopping away. Tara loves to sit on my knee while I have a nice cup of tea.

When you pull out the snacks his eyes lit up! Adorable! 🥺😭

Absolutely just bundles of love. My black and white passed away at the ripe age of 17. I had him since he was 12 weeks old and he was the best little guy...I do still miss him very much.

Oh my goodness you have the most precious little fur baby! We had a Shi Tzu for almost 16 years and he passed away a few months ago and I still cry almost every day. Shi Tzu's just adore their owners and follow them everywhere. We are senior citizens so I am not sure if we will get another pet because of our age and health but I so want one after watching this. Your Mace is a lot calmer than my Otis was, he was always hyper but precious nonetheless. Enjoy every minute you have with that sweet thing!!

My baby Leo is a 4.5 year old shih-tzu 🥰 We love him, he is the most special gift my mom gave me. He is very sweet, curious, and friendly with strangers, the only 'con' is that whenever we have guests over he is not in peace until they hold him, so my guest has to carry him all the time until he falls asleep. Leo understands words in Spanish as: vamonos, comer, fruta, premio, caminar, and cepillo. And whenever I want a kiss, I only say 'kiss' and kisses me right away 🥰🐶 He is such a good baby 🥰🥰🥰

Adorable, ours is 2 years old all white with brown eyes & grey patch on his head.

I miss my Shih Tzu Mikey!! We got him when he was 7 weeks old and at 14, he developed liver disease that took his life (in November 2019). These little guys seem to have issues with the gastro-intestinal track. Shih Tzu's are the sweetest dogs but they can be stubborn from time to time. If I had a treat he would come when I called him. So.... Mikey trained me. LOL They are precious and I would someday like to get another Shih. My husband and I are grieving over the loss of Mikey and so we'll wait until we are ready. Your little Mace is so adorable!!! You are a wonderful pet parent Chantenique!. God bless you and your little guy!!
