It's worth all the sacrifice you have to make for doing this, think about it later in life when you have a pension lined up and retirement perfect while you put your kids in college and own your own home. Yes you can do that with a lot of other jobs out there but nothing is more better than saving a person's life and putting that criminal who could've done a lot of harm to kids, people, or the community. Thank you for officers and people who want to join the academy.

Wow, times have changed! We were instructed to be in tip top shape both physically and mentally before we even got to the Academy...circa 1988. Our first day, we did a 6 mile "Pig" hike in our dress suits in pouring rain. We only lost (DOR) 11 out of 170 Cadets that day. And, my Academy was 7 months long, which included two extra months of Spanish language and EMT/1st Aid training. I loved it!!! Best training EVER. Became an Academy Instructor for 18 yrs. because of this experience. Retired after a total of 24 yrs....2 yrs. with the CA. Hwy. Patrol, 22 yrs with the Tulare Co. Sheriff's Office.

In california, and I have never heard of any state or jurisdiction running it any other way, if you're hired as a cop and they send you to the academy they pay your salary, (sometimes an Academy Cadet/Recruit salary is much less than the basic police officer salary) and for all your uniform and equipment. Some states, again like California have community colleges that run police academies that you can put yourself through. And that could be very expensive because you provide all your Academy uniform all your equipment and nobody's paying you. HOWEVER... If you qualify otherwise, that makes you extremely attractive to the Department of your choice that you are applying for because you have just saved them oodles of money and you come to them not only with the basic training required by law, but with the evaluations and recommendations from the actual police officers who were instructors at that Academy.

Maybe he’s just been there a long time but it really don’t matter age u should try and maintain fitness to a high standard cuz u don’t wanna go through that tough training to then get fat and not be able to catch a crook when he just runs and if u get physical u will be gassed out faster than whoever u fighting kinda weird to see that dude like that

Violent crime is way down to a near all time low and the majority of law enforcement work is enforcing the bullshit war on drugs while tens of thousands of rape test kits sit collecting dust on shelves because there is no money incentive in solving rape cases. Not when asset/money forfeiture law allows law enforcement to literally steal more from civilians than criminals do. If you really wanna make a difference become a law MAKER not a law enforcer. Use the power to help overhaul law and law enforcement to its actual purpose: helping people and keeping the peace. Because as it stands we only represent 6% of the world's population but yet we house about a quarter of the world's prison population, most of whom are in prison for victimless crimes, mainly drug sales. Most of whom are NOT violent and haven't harmed others. And we call ourselves a "free country"? According to the Human Freedom Index the US is only 17th in overall freedom. That's embarrassing. Three things here: Thing 1 - Good on them for taking themselves out of the process early on because, back in the day, I wouldn't have wanted a partner in my car wondering why the heck he/she was there. Thing 2 - I really can't believe the ignorance of the job requirements some of these people had before joining. Most people I have ever known and worked with as cops knew they WANTED it, usually from when they were kids. But some of these people seem like, "Well, I needed a job and they weren't hiring at McDonald's at the time." Thing 3 - Since obviously there were some people in that class that had been living on Mars and had no idea what the job of the Earthly police officer entailed, the department needs to make that clear at some very early stage of the application process. How about putting together a 30 or 45 minute video that shows life in the academy and thereafter as Las Vegas police officer. You can even have people that are spouses of police officers tell what it's like for the family. This video could be mass screened to all the people that put in their applications maybe pass the written test, before they go any further in the process. You make the video mandatory for all persons that were not police explorers or had an immediate family thelat was a police officer or who did not for serve a full hitch in the military. You show the video you give them one week (mandatory) to think about it. After that time they still want to continue on in the process they let Human Resources know within X number of days after that week. The time and effort it would take to put together such a video would pay for itself several times over with the first Academy class and would save countless of hours in dollars on background investigations, human resource time and the salary they get in the academy, only have those people voluntarily leave the academy. It's not a perfect solution, but based on this video, it would indeed save the department Department in the city lots of money.

I feel like what makes an Academy hard like this one is the academics. Yeah the military is tougher when it comes to PT another physical activities. But to understand caselaw and apply it in real time and then testify in court it’s hard as heck. Not to mention the rules and laws that keep you from simply going around and arresting people and knowing what they are and following them to the tea every time it’s harder than just being an infantryman and just blowing everything up in a Third World country

In this community you got cops feeding neighbors your personal information and you as a cop know nothing about your neighbor where they want to prosecute you for every sin and they are more dirty then what your name and rep is as a legitimate man. So we should hold those just as accountable as accountable they want to hold you and your people.

Unfortunately, if you did not do a whole reaserch about becoming a cop then this was never the job for you. Is sad that for giving these individuals who quit a chance someone else who really wanted the job lose their spot. I remembered having a co worker who quit from being a corrections officer because he decided it was not for him. I was like do you know how much I been wanting a job as a corrections officer and you just threw it away? The problem with some young folks is that they think this is a job like any other. Do your research, do ride alongs, jail tours and take college classes for criminal justice. This way you will know if this is the type of job you want. I am almost 38 years old and I am looking forward to get a job with LVMP.

I am a deputy of one of the biggest county in the U.S. I applied LVMP. Due to investigator Olson's of LVMP. I was disqualified from the hiring process. I made it all the way to the end of process before he disqualified me. He made racist comments during the interview process. I put this out there because I used to respect LVMP department. Now I know the good ole boys within the department are part of the problem. I will extend the courtesy when working with warrants for LVMP.

Not to avoid my belief in individual responsibility, but it seems the LVMPD needs to screen their applicant more and weed out those that are not prepared or committed a lot earlier in the process to save time and money for the department, and more importantly for the taxpayers.
