Are you paying too much tax on your custom motorcycle? Vanity Tax explained

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Vanity tax is a serious issue for many motorcycle riders with custom bikes. So aften people spend thousands and hours of time doing hefty customisations on their bike but without realising the horrific impact on vanity tax. This video I will explain vanity tax and some ideas on how to reduce your motorcycle tax bill. It’s fun and lighthearted. Let me know any ideas you have to reduce your vanity tax bill? It’s ultimately the price of beauty in terms of comfort, practicality and usability.
Thank you to Gary France of Tour1 for letting me ride his gorgeous custom bike based on a Heritage SoftTail Harley-Davidson were we rode to the Sammy Miller Motorcycle museum in the Dorset New Forest.

Vanity tax is an interesting one where form takes everything over function. But what a cracking looking custom Harley, I would not have expected this to have much comfort at all but I'm happy to be proved wrong (yet again). Clearly some thought has gone into the function aspects during the design and build. One thing still bothers me though and that would be lower back pressure on longer rides. I had a 'custom' style bike many decades ago and it was fine up to about 100 miles but a little more than that and my back was killing me. That could have been because I already had a lower back issue in the making but wasn't aware of it at the time. Anyway that bike looked fantastic. Many thanks for sharing.

Cool video. Well produced. Fun. But failed to actually describe what vanity tax is... lol. I was thinking it was actual taxation based on non oem modifications to vehicles, like many others here. I am now thinking you mean the extra time and thought that goes into upkeep and maintenance of the bike / deciding when to ride and when to leave it parked / etc etc...

It has nothing to do with money it’s simply a term she’s using to describe the size of the compromise people make when customising a bike to look good. The balance between the implied improvement in looks compared to the loss in comfort, road holding and usability.

Well, when I was 15 my bike caught fire, the bike I was building for when I turned 16 and got a license. I rebuilt it the best I could and got it running again, but I didn't have enough money to buy another seat. So I folded up a towel and put it on the frame and used that for a seat. Does that count? Um, what else? Well , to me the true art is making the bike 100% practical to use but making those practical changes look totally stylish. Do you know what I mean? I think the only vanity thing I might put up with is a smallish fuel tank, because I prefer the look of it. For example, it still rags me when so many companies don't but a proper front fender on a new motorcycle, because they think that stubby dumb little piece of useless plastic they call a fender looks better but turns your front wheel into a sandblaster. So I guess you can tell I would never ride a cruiser. My tailbone thanks me everyday! And I'm a man after all, I got no business riding around on a gyno exam chair

Nice video Vanessa. I'm glad you enjoyed riding the bike and that you found it a lot more practical and easy to ride than it looks. We spent a lot of time making sure the handling, comfort and rideability were right and as you said, the bike actually rides a lot better than you might initially think. There are very few people I would ever trust to ride that bike, but you are one of them. 🙂

  • @GaryFrance_Tour1

You might think so @lae52 but you would be wrong. I have ridden that bike all over Europe and the Alps. It was designed specifically for touring and it is a lot more practical than it looks. For example, I rode it from London the Rome and back, with a group of more normal bikes and we rode 10 hours a day, in comfort and quote easily. Yes, it doesn't handle quite as well as a standard bike, but as Vanessa said in the video, it's actually a comfortable bike to ride that is easy to ride.

@GaryFrance_Tour1 I am so glad to put the time in to design it to be rideable. I had an old modified bike, before occ craze. my first, that was great to ride. I rode all over usx Germany, Czech, and alps. Since then, I've ridden other modified bikes, and none of them would I want to spend a day on. They all started building showpiece, not thinking about ride. I avoid them now. Hats off to you my friend. : )

Two things are inevitable in this world - “death and taxes”. It remains to understand where taxes are unfair or double. Avoiding taxes is humanity's favorite game. I don’t pay tax on my car because instead of repairing roads, which are essentially non-existent in the country, the money immediately goes to the country’s military factories. Let my money be written off from my card through the court, but I will not be a sponsor of fascism.

Gentlemen of Irish and Scottish descent, stop playing games with freedom. Not paying tax on a car is ridiculous. But if they break you with the help of the court, you will be left without a car and find yourself a loser. Your self-esteem will falling like autumn leaves. Gentlemen of Irish and Scottish descent: forget about freedom. For you, only one word “DISCIPLINE” matters. PAY EVERYTHING AS YOU ARE SUPPOSED. And then you will have honor and honor will let you know what to do next. Way of the freedom and disobedience be the path of destruction. Fascism is a derivative of the German Empire. And this empire was created by discipline.
