Are You Listening? Ep. 3 | Compression in Mastering
Музыка
How do you 'glue' a master together using compression? What's the difference between compressing and limiting? Professional mastering engineer and iZotope Director of Education Jonathan Wyner shows you how to set attack and release times in your compressor, how to use Ozone's sidechain detection circuit to create a smoother low-end sound, when to use single or multiband compression, and much more.

I know the idea is that we buy Ozone, but this is so much better than certain other videos where you know all they want to do is trick you into buying something. This is really educational and enlightening. SO grateful to have watched this series!
Been mixing for 10+ years, thinking I knew most of the stuff... never expected I'd learn so much from a single video. Thank you!

The Bass / Kick balance fix at the end of this video using a Low Pass Filter on the side chain is probably one of the golden-est nuggets in this whole series. This is a game changer.
This series is so helpful. Technical and easy to comprehend, thanks Izotope.

Oh man. Generally, I feel very happy with my producing, engineering, mixing, and mastering skills, but this video clearly demonstrates that I do NOT have an ear for compression. I cannot hear the difference. This makes me sad.

the true definition of '' less is more ''.. the cool thing about the mastering engineers is, when they adjust something or add something to the sound, we probably dont notice a thing at first glance, but there is definitely something gets changed.. Years of experience I guess. Golden ears indeed..💯👍

This video honestly has some of the best sample tracks, normally they sound cheesy and cheap. This dude straight up played some math rock...like, damn.
I ironically wish the gain was higher on your actual speaking in this video, but that's small potatoes. This series is great, you are very well spoken and well presented, thank you for this.
This man's choice of wording is impeccable.
The amount of knowledge this man has in his brain is astonishing.

I really can't understand why anyone would give Mr. Wyner thumbs down. SMH.... He's tutorials are very good, & on point when it comes to Mastering. Keep up the amazing work Mr. Wyner/iZotope

I don't think people in my given the thumbs down just because they think he's a rubbish tutor I think it's because most people simply cannot hear any difference in any of the audible comparisons maybe they need monitors that cause minimum £10,000 up along with the added outdoor gear then connect the TV to KZread then people say KZread bitrate and compression is far too much that's why I think they are giving the Thumbs Down
I was waiting for this one

Izotope is great for mastering. And I mean their mindset, not just the plugins by themselves, The company really focuses on this art, and it shows in its DNA.

Always like the video before i even start watching. Thank you so much

Fantastic series! This gentleman explains everything so well and simple, with great examples (not your typical boring indie pop-rock examples)

So much good advice in one video. And so many more to go!
Thank you Isotope and Jonathan! I regret not taking your mastering class while in MP&E at Berklee and am thankful I can get some of you valuable insights on the subject here!
lots of densely packed yet valueable information here which is really helping me to get perspective. Of all the things in mixing/mastering, compression has been the hardest for me to understand how to practically apply it. I know what all the settings do, but actually knowing how and when to use them accordingly is really tough! This helped with that a bit. Great video!
I could easily keep watching this guy explaining his things for weeks non stop! :)

Great teacher, great courses, best mastering software. Izotope ty for these, far better then anything else I have found on youtube or anywhere, and it's free. THANK YOU!
Thank you! You‘re one of the few who actually warns about misusing compression and what alterations may be made to the original input signal. I hear all these people just saying, „do it“ but fewer explaining any limitations involved with using compressors. A sign of true professionality!
