Are you highly sensitive to people yelling or being firm? (How to survive)

This video is made for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace medical advice.
Being highly sensitive is not a bad thing. But when you are a sensitive child or sensitive teen growing up in a less than sensitive world - it can get a bit overwhelming to say the least.
In this video I am helping sensitive children, teens and young adults who are highly sensitive and tend to get crushed by those around them.

I was yelled at pretty severely by my mother through my childhood and my whole life. I’m 26 now. Whenever someone yells, confronts or even talks to me in a stern way I instantly become that four year old being yelled at by his mother for no reason and I crumble, feel sad, anxious, teary and depressed afterwards about it. I’m glad I’ve identified why this happens to me but now I have to figure out how to overcome it.

I'm a girl in computer science college and being yelled instructions at in a shouting voice makes me absolutely crumble to pieces. I have a slow work rhythm and really need to take every piece of information apart and analyse it in my head to be sure I understand it. But when it's about doing something together with a colleague or friend or a teacher having me do something they all rush me because that's their rhythm of doing things. And when they rush me I get so anxious I can't even see the screen straight, it all gets fuzzy (I am not exaggerating one bit, that shit gets fuzzy and blurred to the point I can't see anything on the screen, I get so flustered, feel like I'm burning, like i have the highest fever humanly possible, everything is moving so fast, my mind stops working) And I start doing stupid shit out of the pressure and stress i feel, I can't even read the fucking instructions of what I'm supposed to install and I don't remember how I named the things in my program. And they start yelling at me, and it only makes things worse. It only takes one episode like this for people to assume I don't know shit. And I work my ass off I can tell you that, but people only see the anxiety in me.

This video really helped me! I have a parent who is consistently very firm. Not always with me (I’m the youngest, they’re a little different to me) but though it’s usually a tone, it’s often a yell as well. Especially when it’s towards me, I cry nearly every single time and they take it as me being immature. They act like it’s solely their job to toughen me up when I can handle it much better on my own. Getting use to these things is difficult but hearing it from someone else helps me know it’s not just me thinking it’ll be a good idea. I also want to share a random trick for crying. It might just be placebo effect but it works if you think it works. When you feel like you’re about to cry, press your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Sometimes it actually tickles which is especially effective, but I find that it helps me at least break out of my focus on what’s going on and perform a random simple act.

When we tell our most loving and sensitive people to "toughen up", instead of defending them against those who assail them, we cater to bad/evil people while also making the best of us a little bit worse. That is a downward spiral for all of humanity. No one needs to toughen up, the assailants need to be healed. If all of our people were healed, we would have No Enemy. 🕊️❤️🍀🧠🎶💪🏼

actually I got into a fight, what really happened was this one guy started bullying me by saying mean things and started picking up my stationaries and stuff, I got so mad when he said something really inappropriate about my mom, so I pushed him down and started punching him...in the rage. after few minutes when I realized he was bleeding, I apologized but he started to cry (btw he is my teacher fav student + a topper) and his squad complained about me to the teacher... now I tried to tell my part, but she told me to shut up and asked "did you slap him" "yes but-" "we all know what kind of girl you are" that line.. that just.. idk. she was my fav teacher, I always give her roses and make card on her birthday. for a moment I recalled all the the good things I did for her, never expect her to say such a thing... I tried not to cry... but the tears were just falling down. but after she felt bad and said sorry.. cuz what she said was.just.. yk. anyway after that I got suspended for a week but everything was fine after.

It's not about misunderstanding someone who talks normally, it's about being scared of my father yelling and beating me. I got like a small version of trauma from my childhood because of it and now everytime someone's rough on me (yells, or has very angered tone specifically towards me) because I did something wrong, I usually hide and cry to myself. It's not about misunderstanding someone's intentions because I'm very good at it, and I don't have anxiety disorder, but it feels like I have a phobia of being yelled at. It crushes me, and makes me cry, even if I know it's my fault, or that person didn't mean to make me cry.

I hate yelling at me . At first i was trying to hold myself and not to burst into tears,i was looking at the ground and trying to imagine that they're not screaming at me. Then i started to cry everytime person's voice got a little higher. After that i started to yell at them and cry at the same time. I believe it was kind of a protective instict. Now i catch myself on the fact that everytime someone yells at me i am literally starting to get aggressive, but not phisical. Sometimes I'm looking around for an item, hard or big enough to throw at the screamer or to hit them by it,to make them shit up. But good thing is i am able to control myself and blow away those thoughts from my head. Now I'm just running away and locking myself. I hope they won't chase me or try to break in and continue to scream, because I'm afraid that i will lose control. I know, it's just in my mind, but i fear, what if i will hurt them badly. I won't be able to forgive myself anymore. It's really eating me from inside. Please,be gentle, and respect others.

I think this is normal but it was really loud to the point I have to crouch in a corner and cover my ears. But today, 2022, I am now 13, I got yelled at for my phone being out and I was literally trying to put it away but apparently I wasn't. So the teacher raised his voice much more and I took it personal because that was really loud for me as well. I tried my hardest not to cry in class.

I get anxious when he yells even in our regular conversation. my dad always comforts me and says, he will never hurt me. As a child When I was raised away from my parents, they were an abusive family who will yell at me for no reason. So I am trying to understand myself and see if my being afraid of screaming is a trigger from my past abuse or I am just taking screaming personally. This video gave me an idea of how I am maybe thinking about it and give me a solution.

I'm 15 and I have a 14 year old brother who struggles with this as well. Whenever we do something an adult doesn't like, of course we get yelled at or a stern talking to. What triggers the waterworks for me comes in a 3 step process. 1st is before the person even starts speaking. By looking into the adults eyes I can sense a lot, so I look for the emotion in their eyes to base my reaction off of. I also look at body language, like if their crossing their arms or tapping their foot, maybe taking long deep breaths. I also sense the vibe that is being given off, is it anger, disappointment, sadness, all another way to identify their emotion that they will use to speak towards me. All of this being done in a couple of seconds, subconsciously. 2nd, is during the talking or yelling. If they are yelling loud enough I'll be able to feel it in my eardrums which is uncomfortable. This causes my throat to react and become dry and excruciatingly strain, which also causes the burning-cold, open feeling in the back of my throat and into my nose stuffy or not, causing more discomfort. During the lecture I'm getting, when my throat hurts, I'll speak less or stop speaking in general until I can calm down enough for the pain to subside. This doesn't go over well with some adults because they expect to get answers out of you immediately after they spit out a question. In the moment, I also can't identify if the questions asked are rhetorical or are meant to be answered. Answering a rhetorical question or accidentally interrupting the adult while their speaking may cause an unexpected "shut up and listen to me" to blurt out from them, causing tensions to rise. The feeling of frustration can start to build quickly and just as quickly turn to anger which is what I try to avoid causing because that can turn physical (nothing as drastic as abuse). I also get fidgety when I feel small in their presence or intimidated, adding onto the discomforting feeling but also a fight or flight instinct that is never acted on causing me to more likely fidget and freeze up. This leads up to the 3rd thing. It's still during the lecture but this is when the anxiety and fear starts to set in, where tensions are at its highest. Although the adult is giving me a lecture I start to focus on that variety of punishments I may have to prepare for at any given moment. That fear and anxiety of not knowing if or when I might get whooped adds onto the fidgeting and builds up more tension. In the end, all of this happens in 3 minutes or less. It all seems to take a lot longer when reading it out but in real time this only portrays 2 emotions at a time, mainly fear and discomfort for me. 1 adult family member of mine takes advantage of the emotions I'm feeling and calls me out on it, using every reaction they can get out of me against me by putting it over my head and always bringing it up in every lecture or in daily life to insult me. Of course, this person does this with everyone and even goes as far to talk about you behind your back but being just loud enough so you can hear everything clearly. Although they do this with everyone, they will target you directly if you do something they don't like and see it or hear about it , then remember something you did that made them angry and finally insulting you and giving you a lecture to justify the insult. Thankfully it's not my mom who does this but this particular family member is someone I've lived with most of my life, so some would imagine that I would grow out of this. The point is, that family member is one of the triggers for me to start crying along with the 3 steps. If you made it to the end, you're awesome, have a good day or night.
