I love your channel. Gave myself a Concept 2 for my 64th BD. I’ve wanted to row for 30 years. I’ve watched at least 5 of your videos and have confidence with what I’m doing on the machine. Great workout- No injury or burnout. Thanks Guys!

Congratulations! The coaching here is the real thing. You are not alone at the late start. I took up rowing at age 61.

Have been watching your videos as riding season is over where I'm at, I'm trying not to lose the fitness I've achieved, {304Lbs. to 215Lbs.) r/t eating whole foods and bicycle riding. I found rowing a great alternative for the winter. I subbed to your channel, love the content.

I'm brand new to rowing (bought my machine 2 days ago) and, unfortunately, I don't understand. I've watched several of your other videos and they are so clear on what to do for a beginner. When is the inhale vs exhale supposed to happen. I'm really looking forward to learning the mechanics correctly to start and really appreciate your vids!

I am adopting a similar breathing pattern to yours. Deep inhale at catch, exhale through drive, short inhale and the end of drive, short exhale through recovery. I am currently maintaining 20s/m, 2:18-2:20/500m for 30min. Usually end up 6400m to 6500m. My short term goal is to drop 1s/500 every a couple of days until I get 7000m in 30min with 20s/m, then train to finish 5000m in 20min. Medium term goal is to get 7500m in 30min with 20s/m. Haven't had a realistic long term goal yet. I tried long through recovery, and long exhale through drive, but after 25min, I feel I am not getting enough air. Also I cannot maitain that patter through the whole 25min.

This is a general comment, and yes, this segment on breathing was most helpful. For the past 4 months, 2 days a week, I have attended class at the very excellent Roworx in Long Beach. Workouts are dynamic, but time for "teaching technique" as your videos do, is extremely limited. So, thank you very much for teaching me more about how to row! "there is no perfect" but we can strive. Here's my question, what is good? I mean, you are an incredible athlete, and our instructors are as well, age 24-39. However, at 68, and always an above average athlete, how do I know I am at the top say 10% of my age group for watts generated, and time for 250m sprint, or how many meters for 30 second sprint repeats with 30 seconds rest. If you can let us know how many watts you do, or how many meters you rowed per segment, that might help. However, can you please direct us to some way to handicap our performance? For example, at the end of class we do 2 250m sprints with 1 min rest. I can do 51 seconds each. When we do 30 second intervals, 30 second rest, I can row 125 meters on the first 7 and then 130 to 135 on the last 3. Is this good??? Excited for the next new episode, appreciate what you do for the "Dark Horse" community of rowers....

first, concept2 provide a ranking list on their webpage - you can filter there for age your age group. Second, if you really want to know it you need to take a standardized test in a lab - In the final report you'll find your score as % compared to the standard individual (compensated for age, sex, height, weight, aso).

Any comments on inhalation respiratory muscle therapy? This is breathing through a device that constricts airflow to strengthen the muscles. I use "The Breather", and it helps my swimming breathing (less out-of-breath issues), but not sure if I've seen any benefit in my rowing.

Well it must be just me, but somehow I’m left wanting to see you showing your breathing pattern while rowing at a slow pace. Long exhale on the drive, inhale, exhale, inhale all on the return? Doesn’t seem possible. Ok ok, I’ll go back and watch this again. This is huge by the way. I’ve long wondered wether my 2 breathes per stroke was correct AND correctly timed.

Hey guys, love the videos they’re super helpful. I’m with a rowing club now and we do two tests 1) 12 mins free rate and 2) 20:20, 20 mins of rowing with 20 strokes per minute. For the first test I need to get around 3400 metres in 12 mins and the second test an average split between 1:50 and 1:55. Any tips on these would be super helpful!!

I've always followed the bunch that says you should exhale all through the drive and inhale through the recovery until your lungs are more or less full at the catch, but have always suffered from reflux from my stomach (GERD I think is the medical term). This has got so bad that I nearly thought of quitting rowing altogether. Then, recently, I started to do the exact opposite (in during the drive and out during the recovery, getting almost empty at the catch). I don't know if this affects my performance but it seems to reduce a lot the reflux issue. Do you have any thoughts or experience on this problem?
