Are You a Seducer? | Soren Kierkegaard’s Either/Or

The concept of a seducer is a bit of a complicated one, some saying that it’s connected to deception and manipulation, others saying that it’s just good flirting. In this video we look at the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard’s conception of what a seducer is and how they operate.
First of all, what does a seducer desire? A seducer is someone who doesn’t so much desire the individual person, but rather, the general feeling of sensuality. Kierkegaard contrasts this with Greek love which is a desire of the individual person. To the seducer, the individual is simply a means to an end to obtain the sensual experience.
Next, there are two clear characteristics of a seducer’s methodology. First, a seducer needs to plan their seduction ahead of time and reflect back on how they’re doing. Secondly, a seducer uses their ability of speech to lie. I conclude the video by arguing that this isn’t only unethical, but impractical if one wants to succeed in the world of modern dating. #philosophy #kierkegaard #existentialism

Thanks for the video Hello, i have the diary of a seducer as a stand alone book and it has been difficult to read because it makes me feel uncomfortable. The manipulation and the mental tricks are just to much for me. Now I know it’s part of a bigger book. So yeah, it shouldn’t be read as a separate thing

It depends, some people including myself may make the moral subjectivism argument. People want to feel good, so telling them their beautiful makes them feel good despite what is actually true.

False. There's this mental disorder called psychopathy. A psychopath would tend to get something sensual or material from a person by lying. They would impersonate what they see the other person is looking for. If their target was looking for a long term relationship they would gladly make themselves look like the kind of person that would commit to a long lasting relationship. "But only if the other person showed that sex doesn't mean much to them. Which they can show by having it spontaneously after a second or first date". They don't get what they want by ONLY searching for people that are willing to give them what they need. Those that willingly fulfill their needs are more than welcome but that is not enough. They are trying to get what they want from others as well by assuming the look of a open and honest person that suits their targets (at least partially).

    Like some social chameleon?

@@PhilosophyToons Except these social chameleons ultimate goal is power. If they are already powerful they will get a kick out of ridiculing or humiliating others. But if someone else has something they need, they will chameleonize themselves to get what they need. Sometimes they may look chatty, fun, vulnerable or sad but they are none of those things. They are hungry, proud and they never forgive. If you did wrong to them, they will get more than even. If they did wrong to you they see it as only fair because you are so gullible that you let yourself get tricked by them. There's load of texts on dark triad characters. Closest to definition of evil by my standards. Still. most are a bit impatient. Heaven forbid a patient psychopath tho.
