I can't agree more. Every year we take two weeks and hunt out of state. When we pull up to a camp place, the first thing we do is police the area and we always get a big bag of trash. The last place we camped in Arizona, there were 7 fire rings in a 90 square foot area. We had to clear some up just to make room for our tent. Why build a new fire ring 3 feet from an old one. Pick up your trash and take it home. Don't ruin areas for the next person. We all want to camp in pretty woodland areas. Great podcast content.

I think people go through stages of public land etiquette. I have been back country hunting and camping now for 5 years. I am guilty of some things you guys mentioned, probably more out of ignorance then anything. Each year I learn new things and better ways to do things. This includes how to better leave it how I found it. I enjoyed the topic today, it’s important that everyone does their part. When things get to out of hand they will put up gates and shut down the access. Thanks!

Big thing I see is side x sides and other motorized vehicles ruining hunting and fishing grounds. Yet, no youtube channel will cover this topic.

Great discussion. We’ve all had those types of decisions to make. Always need to be aware of the impact we have on the landscape. Another factor is the hunting video industry as a whole encourages landscape impact. How much impact do you imagine OnX has had.

I hate to be a pessimist, but I think that most of the people that do these things .. are fully aware of it. Kinda like poachers .. poachers are not misguided ignorant "scholars" that made one too many bad decisions ... they're mostly aware of their transgressions here. :/ However, if this video can help inform/change the innocent offenders, great.

I will say that I had no clue that surface shitting was bad until I was 28 years old. I hunt pretty much everything now but in my upbringing my dad and I would mostly quail hunt and I don’t ever really remember needing to go while we were out. We also never really camped much so I guess this lesson was just never taught me. It wasn’t until I was listening to a MeatEater podcast a couple years ago where they talked about it and I was like oh man I had no idea 😅

Great discussion. It all boils down to common sense. Last year in Montana we waited 6 days for the roads to dry out enough for travel in few of our favorite areas. Others didn't and they basically destroyed the roads and their rigs. Not cool

That dog issue is everywhere. We don’t allow ours to run off for that reason and always clean up, sure wish others had curtesy.

Unfortunately, I've seen a lot on OTC lands. Commonly see people camp on ATV trails and trying to block through traffic. An outfitter has placed trees across another trail to block access. I've had guys come up and hunt on both sides of me within 100yds. I had a guy follow my boot prints and walk right up on me glassing. Only to go just past me in the drainage and start glassing the same valley within sight of me. Ironically, after hiking in another mile and killing a bull, he tried chastising me for cutting him off. I stopped by his camp and gave him back his note he left on my windshield. In his opinion, by following and then passing me, by about 150yds, he now had dibs on the remaining drainage.

I always burn food product wrappers in bear areas. You can easily grab the foil from a peak refuel and wad it up as trash into pack and no food scent.

all this popularity has harmed hunting more than helped. we never had all these issues till all these guys started youtube channels.

I have an ethics question for out of state hunters coming to Arizona to hunt. The Az Game & Fish regulations ASK hunters to use lead free hunting bullets on page 83 of the 24/25 regs. When you guys come here do you switch over to lead free bullets?

If you can abide by it, you should do it. It doesn’t make sense for someone like a traditional muzzleloader user who needs to use either a lead ball or conical, but most hunting rifles can shoot copper bullets just fine. Copper definitely has its own set of advantages, anyways.

@@redacted2618 muzzleloaders typically don’t shoot the speeds to cause the fragmentation that cause the poisoning of scavengers. I used soft pure lead projectiles in the 1980’s. The bullets recovered were all at near cast weights.

Those people that do those dumb stunts at Yellowstone have never held a fishing rod or gun in their life, they want to have a selfie next to a 1200 lb, animal or stand near 1200 degree hot spring and more worried about their social media account and not regard for there own safety.

Mechanized off road travel machines are a huge problem, bicycles are not an issue, disrespectful individual riders may be a problem though. Go further-escape the crowds. Hike in well beyond the lazies ability.

As our sport becomes more diverse we will see more issues

In our county, in Nevada they passed a leash law for all dogs that absolutely drives me up the wall as a large cattle and also wildlife area open to hunting who is going to have a leash on your dog to hunt ducks, quail & chukar all this because of Xtra large influx of California transplants they definitely need town leash laws let's not get me started on what they have allowed the homeless population that have almost completely ruined the few rivers we have but on we go

Our public education system has been failing us for a long time. The fundamentals of life are no longer taught in public schools. I know it's the parents responsibility to teach their children ethics but if the parents don't have ethics what chance do we have of ever breaking the cycle.

How can they complain about cut trails, trees, fire pits, and over usage - When ranchers are allowed to let cows & sheep run freely everywhere all year..!?!?!?!? Make it make sense...

See more and more off road vehicles in places they don't belong there's been talk of the state I live in banding then on all state land

You can still get OTC rifle tags for now. CPW is taking a look at taking away OTC rifle tags for non-residents as well. If they did, it probably wouldn't take effect until the next big game season structure is discussed in 5 years. OTC rifle tag sales in CO have been decreasing over recent years. CPW hasn't received the crowding complaint from OTC rifle hunters yet like they have from OTC archery hunters.

Rifle is soon, in my opinion. A lot of the OTC bow hunters are going to go rifle if they can’t draw a tag.

Stop turning everything into wilderness zones certainly help,that allows them to thinned .

Respect is no longer required in America. Same as for common sense. Mtn. bikers are a big issue in my area in S.E. PA. In fact, Mtn. bikers tear down the signs.

I mountain bike but I do not bike on foot traffic only trails. The amount of damage mtn bikes do compared to 4 wheelers and side by sides pales in comparison, it shouldn't even be a topic of discussion. The noise pollution alone is a joke.

Can you guys do a podcast on where you can, can't, and shouldn't use an electric assisted bike?

They should not be used in any area restricted to Non-Motorized travel. They have an electric motor.

OKAY, 9:47 into the video, I was freaking looking for it based on the thumbnail. What a pet peeve of this is for me. I freaking made a video about it and offered some suggestions. I think the problem is, newfound outdoors enthusiasts from 2020, who weren't raised on proper outdoor etiquette. Now that said, I'll dig cat holes and outhouse holes 7 days a week and twice on Sunday, but if it's somewhere so crowded I'm expected to use a wag bag? Like wearing a face diaper 4 years ago, it's somewhere where I don't need to be. Just sayin.

I go off the trail and dig a decent hole. There has been times where the hole was not suffice, but I made sure to bury it good.

Does a Bear sh*t in the woods? Is it better to burn that foil or have it in a trash bag in a landfill? Some of this stuff is just feel good for your own conscience.

Positive feedback? From who? Colorado residents? Colorado didn’t have to eliminate all over-the-countet non-resident archery elk hunters, they could have just limited it by making it a "first-cone-first serve/limited number of non-resident tags/unit" basis to actually limit it. That should include residents as well if the true problem is overcrowding in some areas. Maybe have it 85% residents, 15% non-residents & give the residents their "reasonable" advantage. The real issue may be there have been incidents where a small number of non-residents abused this privilege or residents who blamed their lack of success on non-residents whether it was actually fact. Makes me want to say, "Fine, then No Colorado Residents are allowed to archery elk hunt in my state then." Go ahead and disagree... but this was a gross overaction imo. If it wasnt, then why not do so for rifle hunts as well? There is the money thing though too. That's a lot of lost revenue, but perhaps Colorado doesn’t really need it, or they feel these hunters will switch rifle hunts until rifle hunters complain also. While its true I haven't hunted Archery Elk in Colorado for years, I never saw overcrowding as an issue given the vast amount of country & number of elk. Still sounds like overreaction to me & if need be will just go elsewhere.

The hidden issue for BLM lands, are the increased use of BLM land by the homeless...and Squatters. AZ particularly have many campers-trailers for extended periods exceeding 14 days on those BLM lands. This count is lopped into the camping numbers. There are no specific categories regarding land user numbers for homeless BLM stays.

Yes Mav (good channel by the way) it has gotten severe in our deserts. I contacted Coconino National Forest Service last summer and they told me to report over stay rv camping and they have increased enforcement. Unfortunately Tonto nfs has turned a blind eye out by Superior, Az.
