    Usually, in opera, the division between a soprano and a mezzo is bigger than the division between a mezzo and a contralto. The mezzo and contralto usually has the same range, but the thickness of the voice is different. The contralto is the rarest voice type existing (at least in born-female voicetypes). Some times, in choirs, they have falsettists/countertenors to sing the mezzo/alto-parts, because they do not have any low female singers

    I sang soprano 1 parts all through middle and high school and would take the more “lyric soprano” solos in advanced choir in high school, but when I hit 17, my voice went through a change and I lost some of my upper register. Coupled with losing several senior altos and my teacher throwing me into the altos because I could pick up the material quickly, I barely ever used my upper register, above D5-E5, for about two years. My voice? WHOO BOY. It didn’t bounce back 😂 I still don’t feel comfortable with it and it’s been YEARS. I haven’t had the opportunity to take vocal lessons though I want to because I’d like to actually, ya know, refamiliarize myself with my mixed register, even if I never get my upper register back fully, but it’s so daunting to start over seemingly from scratch.

    My singing teacher classified me as a soprano 1 when I was 14 but since then I didn't take lessons anymore and my voice changed quite a bit. Right now my range is D3 to E6 though my most comfortable range would be somewhere between G3 and G5 / A5 probably - though I feel MUCH more comfortable going to C6 than I am going further down. At the same time my chest voice can get pretty strong and dark in lower registers to a point where people even point out how deep it sounds. While I feel most comfortable in G3 to G5 I can struggle to create a mixed voice and have a pretty strong break between my registers. Back in the day I couldn't properly handle my chest voice and used to sing very breathy. That slowly started to change when I started to practise. I actually consider being Soprano 2 instead now but I am not really sure 🤔

    Hello Maria! I'm a teacher and it's nearly summer 🤪 Wow! Thanks for the description. Girls' voices also change as they mature, but less dramatically than boys. We actually can have up to 3 voice changes during our lives, one through teens, 25 and then 30! Crazy. Your voice has most likely dropped to be mezzo-soprano. That E6 is still VERY high for a mezzo, but your comfortable range (which we call the tessitura) gives away that you are most likely a mezzo-soprano now. You'll probably find that your chest register will develop now :)

    @@TamaraNozik Thank you so much for your feedback! I feel more confident in my classification now :) My E6 might be explained through the fact that my singing teacher was an opera singer (funny enough an alto) and I was trained mostly in headvoice and high registers. So I have the proper technique to do it - meanwhile everything I know about chestvoice I had to teach myself through the years. I actually found my voice becoming deeper around 1-2 years ago when I was 23/24. So it also fits the timeframe you mentioned! If my chest register will actually develop more now I am already looking forward to what I will be able to do in the future! :D

    I am singing in the choir with sopranos. But in home I can not reach those higher notes again and sing in the lower register. I started in the choir with altos, but it was boring to sing only so low. I do think now that I am mezzo. I love singing along all the singers that you mentioned. I also noticed that sometimes I get 2 different level voices at the same time. It sounds like there is 2 of me singing, lower and higher. I do not know what that means, but it is fun to have my own choir at home 😅

    I am not a mezzo, but I am checking out these female mezzos, knowing that we, guys, are normally singing an octave below the girls. Being a tenor 2 guy, I feel very comfortable, singing an octave down from these mezzos or soprano 2 girls. Would you consider me a tenor or a baritone if my voice type is an octave down from the mezzos? I have sung an octave down from Whitney Houston when I was doing karaoke of that song titled, "I Will Always Love You," which Whitney has recorded back in 1992. If I were a belter, you would hear me sing countless C4 notes and other notes around C4. I look at female artists with strong C5 belts. Knowing that I have strong C4 belts, I can go an octave down from those girls. I will go an octave down from such female belters as Celine Dion and Adele. As a choir member, I feel most comfortable on the tenor 2 line. Do not put me on any of the two bass lines if you do not need to and do not put me on tenor 1 if you do not need to.

    I gotta tell you a story: Recently, I had a lesson with my teacher (singing only a shortened and "tenoral" baritone and having very strong, probably unhealthy tensions in my vocals before) Then, when I sang "silent night" with her a few weeks ago, she told me that I'd "clearly use headvoice", even though it was largely chest voice and that I'd sing in her range like an Altus would do usually... Now I rly find notes below (untransposed) F3 and E3 more uncomfortable than the higher register when I'm warmed up and find notes like C5 or even D5 or sometimes even higher rather easy to do most of the time compared to before, but my headvoice (not falsetto!) is kinda weak/strained and idk how to build a greater range and if I should use only mixed or also pure headvoice :\ Also when I hum, the 1st really relaxed note is often an A3 My voice changed to be like that in just about a month and I'm an adult male singer Would be glad to get some answers about that experience I'm currently going through...

    Ok! I’m going to got through your message! Ah, this sounds super frustrating, but bravo on the clarity you have with what you are experiencing. Don’t be discouraged by experiencing some areas of the voice being weak and other strong, it is to be expected. So, singing teacher mentioned you sang in her range. The countertenor (you mentioned ur a high baritone range) matches up with the contralto range. When you sing the C5 and D5 which you mention are pretty comfortable but lower than the F3, E3 gets sticky. Got it. Firstly, are you sure you are a baritone, not a tenor? That seems quite high to start feeling weaker. Your voice may have changed with training and you are finding those lower notes a challenge. You definitely want to strengthen your head register and balance it with chest. The goal is to have a balanced voice between registers!! When the head and chest are balanced, it allows you to access both head mix and chest mix and be able to identify them with more ease. You want to avoid gaps in the range when possible. Otherwise it’s like playing a piano with missing keys, or as you play lower or higher you can’t press the keys as hard. May I suggest to focus on working on head and chest independently in your lessons. I also suspect the tension is causing havoc in the lower notes and the folds aren’t closing as they should. This is truly just my opinion, I’m not a health expect! But keep working with your teacher and see if they can help you build strength in the head, clear up the chest register below that F3 so that the folds close and work on eliminating tension. Have you ever done Alexander technique? It’s great for tension issues in the body and I always suggest a check up with your local speech pathologist if your voice is experiencing anything unusual! I hope that help, let me know if I misinterpreted your question!! 😀😀😀

    Vocal range doesn't determine voice type. You need a vocal coach and develop your voice eventually you will figure out your real voice type. But honestly unless you're singing opera, Broadway, or choral music it really doesn't matter the voice classification especially in pop music.

    Hello Karina! I’m happy to help. So there is a special word for the notes that you sing comfortably and you call that your tessitura. Although you have a 2ish octave range it doesn’t mean all the notes are easy to sing! Your tessitura is extremely low for a female which would typically mean you are a contralto. Contralto is the vocal register which is the lowest a female singer can be. I’m assuming you are female with a name like Karina but plz correct me if I am wrong xx

  • @TamaraNozik

    @TamaraNozik

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes! I know what you are talking about. I think there are a few points here to consider one being access to intense training. My opinion would be that a lot of singers on KZread tend to be self made and perhaps haven't had adequate (if any) training on using their engaging muscles and supporters. It doesn't help that the current trend is for that whispery, whimsical sound, honestly it's usually under engaged singing. Most singers like Adele, Gaga, Beyonce etc have a plethora of vocal trainers who work with them to get the best and healthiest sound possible, so they can tour and do hours of heavy singing. What an interesting conversation point, thank you! Let me know what you think.

    Hello! It's ok to be confused. The notes listed are general parameters! Some won't/will be able to extend beyond the listed notes. You would know if you are contralto, the texture and depth of the voice would be a give away. You may be a mezzo who has a low extension. think about where you most comfortably sing. :)

    Hello Gaigie! Age is important because for ladies we experience 3 voice changes over our life times - one during puberty, one around 25 and one at 30 :) Sounds like your higher register is just underdeveloped which is why you have the sound that doesn't feel as confident. Am I right in saying this? My gut feeling is that you are a mezzo-soprano (the middle singer).

    Hello! Sorry for this late reply, I got married this month and had a small break :) I love talking to young singers! Ok, so you most likely had a voice change (explains the lowered sound). Females can experience up to 3 voice changes over their life (puberty, 25 and around 30) and over our lifetime it lowers. You might be just losing your head voice (don't worry it can come back) and your chest voice is strengthening. I would say yes, you are a mezzo-soprano right now. Mezzo-sopranos sing second part and alto in choir (Alto is a voice part, not a voice type). If you want to strengthen your head voice so you don't lose it, sing sirens, hooting sounds like a pigeon (I swear these work and I'm not insane) and you can slowly build strength gently up there :)

    Ok great first step. One thing I like to suggest if you get stuck with voice assessment is to look at your range and think do you like to sing high within that range, middle of that range or down low? Just because you have access to notes may not necessarily mean you sing them comfortably. What do you think. Looking at that range, it gives me mezzo-soprano vibes, but again there are other factors to consider.

    What would be in between an alto and a mezzo? I'm definitely not a soprano which I associate with Ariana or even Rihanna. I tend to feel more comfortable singing along with men. Maybe a Sam Cook song or even better Keith Urban.

  • @TamaraNozik

    @TamaraNozik

    Hello Karen! Sorry for the late reply. Rihanna would be a mezzo-soprano I would say. So if you tend to be able to sing in a male tenor range and very low female, you might possibly a contralto singer. A contralto is the lowest vocal register for a female. The contralto in choirs can sing both alto part (it's a voice part, not a voice type!) or second soprano or even at times tenor parts if available!!

    Hello! Yes! It's completely understandable to be confused, many are. I would take a wild guess and say it's most likely 95% that you are a mezzo-soprano. The soprano usually can manage to get up to C6 so that most likely isn't you. Fun fact: Alto is a voice part NOT a voice type. Weird? yes and then contralto is left. Contraltos are very rare and most contraltos have deep, rich, voices (sometimes almost masculine sounding). The mezzos are the middle - they typically sing high and low and can at times be versatile in choirs. They can sing alto, second soprano and even sing soprano part at times :) I hope this helps you both.

    Hello Anita. Thanks for the description and clarity. Ok, it sounds like you are having trouble with the transition between your chest (normal voice) and head voice (what you are calling falsetto). This is normal and typically a singing teacher will help you try and smooth the transition and build strength in your higher voice. You are probably looking to find your mixed voice, this means that you would be able to sing up high with more strength (less breathy and airy). Typically you can achieve this once you can confidently sing head and chest well. I would try and find a local teacher who you could get some lessons off to help you through this! If you are looking look up NATS teacher directory and look up your area. I would say you are a mezzo-soprano with your vocal range :)
