Are women oppressed in Islam?

In this video I talk about my experience about the reaction of people about the rights of women in Islam. Unfortunately a lot of people still have a wrong perception about this subject. Sometimes because they confuse religion with culture or because they don't have a lot of information about Islam. It's time to clear up misunderstandings. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you want to leave a comment feel free to do so!

@@jettyharrison4377 bro You utterly are mistaken In understanding that Surah. Although, this bit needs a great amount of explanation, nonetheless, I would be as brief as possible. In a authentic Hadith sunan ibn majah 1985: Prophet Muhammad pbuh said “do not beat the female slave of Allah” Men are the male slave and women are the female slave of Allah swt. So, why does it( Hadith) have to contradict the Quran. Well, it doesn’t. As a matter of fact, that “beating” is purely symbolic and even in today’s legal standpoint, mostly in western countries, “crime of passion” is comparable to that Surah nisa in Quran. The “light” beating is the absolute last resort where you have an obstinate wife who does not listen 👂 to you, despite many warnings you have given to her for example not to meet certain figures/men, do not come late, do not undermine Islamic values, then light beating is issued. Again’ the prophet pbuh said in another Popular Hadith “ the best among you is the one who treats his wife in the best possible manner”. Moreover, you Mr. Harrison, have not studied the other contemporary religions fully. Therefore, you can’t say what the other religions have said about treating women. So, it will be best if you just zip up plz 🤐

@@erdoganmumcu3424 why does 1400 years of muslim scholars disagree with what you are saying? And btw it is not true that he spared everyone's life at the conquest of mecca. There were multiple people he had executed. One of them was Ibn Khatal: Sahih Bukhari 4286 & 3044. Ibn Taymiyya wrote in as-Sarim al-Maslul (p. 135) that there were 3 reasons why he was killed: 1. Murder 2. Apostasy 3. Insulting Muhammad. And Muhammad did force people into islam on other occasions: Khalid ibn al-Walid was sent by Muhammad towards the tribe of Banu al-Harith b. Ka'b, if they did not convert to Islam, Khalid was to wage war against them. U can find this in the History of Al-Tabari vol 9 p. 82-83 Regarding Quran 2:256 which u quoted: muslims have ALWAYS understood this verse to either be abrogated or that it is simply about those groups who are allowed to pay the jizya. meaning that u cant force them into islam cuz they can pay the jizyah. While offensive jihad is still undertaken regardless. Al-Tabari, one of the greatest and most historic Muslim historians and scholars wrote the following in his Tafsir on this verse: "All the Muslims have reported on behalf of their Prophet that he forced a group of people into Islam and refused to accept anything from them except them converting to Islam. And he ordered their execution if they rejected Islam. Those were groups such as the Pagan Arab Polytheists, the Apostates and whoever resembled them." This is true islam and how islam has been understood for 14 centuries until westernized Muslims have started twisting and distorting the true meaning of islam

Prophet Deborah was also the Judge. As a prophetess, she expressed the will of God through divine means, and as a judge, she judged the Israelites to ensure they were living according to God's commands. 40 years of judging Israel (Judges 5:31) from 1107 BC until her death in 1067 BC. The only other person referred to as both a prophet and a judge in the Bible is Samuel. That places Deborah amongst the great and powerful people mentioned in the Bible. The Holy Bible affirms that women are equal in value, have the same essence, and share the same divine image that the men do. They also share with the men sovereignty over the physical creation: "Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let THEM have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male AND FEMALE he created them." Genesis 1:26-27 "This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. Male AND FEMALE he created THEM, and he blessed THEM and named THEM MAN when THEY were created." Genesis 5:1-2

In the West, the status of women has greatly improved over the past few centuries. We can all be thankful that people in some areas of the Muslim world are seeing the change and are trying to adopt similar policies, in spite of Muhammad’s low opinion of women. Yet many areas, intent on following Muhammad’s guidelines, are still in darkness. We can only hope that those who want to heed the Qur’an will one day pick up the Bible and read the words of the Apostle Paul: Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into the name of Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

@@jacobsenh7383 *Rights of women in other civilizations* There is no need for us to mention the situation of women in Greek, Persian or Jewish society, but even Christian societies had a bad attitude towards women. The theologians even gathered at the Council of Macon to discuss whether a woman was merely a body or a body with a soul. They thought it most likely that women did not have a soul that could be saved, and they made an exception only in the case of Mary (Maryam - peace be upon her). The French held a conference in 586 CE to discuss whether women had souls or not, and if they had souls, were these souls animal or human? In the end, they decided that they were human! But they were created to serve men only. During the time of Henry VIII, the English Parliament issued a decree forbidding women to read the New Testament because they were regarded as impure. Until 1805, English law allowed a man to sell his wife, and set a wife’s price at six pennies. In the modern age, women were kicked out of the house at the age of eighteen so that they could start working to earn a bite to eat. If a woman wanted to stay in the house, she had to pay her parents rent for her room and pay for her food and laundry. (See `Awdat al-Hijab, 2/47-56) How can we compare this to Islam which enjoins honoring and kind treatment of women, and spending on them? *Have the rights of women in Islam been neglected?* With regard to the changes in these rights throughout the ages, the basic principles have not changed, but with regard to the application of these principles, there can be no doubt that during the golden age of Islam, the Muslims applied the shari’ah (Islamic law) of their Lord more, and the rulings of this shari’ah include honoring one’s mother and treating one’s wife, daughter, sister and women in general in a kind manner. The weaker religious commitment grew, the more these rights were neglected, but until the Day of Resurrection there will continue to be a group who adheres to their religion and applies the shari’ah (laws) of their Lord. These are the people who honor women the most and grant them their rights. Despite the weakness of religious commitment among many Muslims nowadays, women still enjoy a high status, whether as daughters, wives or sisters, whilst we acknowledge that there are shortcomings, wrongdoing and neglect of women’s rights among some people, but each one will be answerable for himself.

Muhammad offered women little hope for the afterlife. Indeed, he clearly states that most of the inhabitants of hell are women who were ungrateful to their husbands (though he never suggests that ungrateful husbands will receive similar punishment. This means that, after being admonished, banished to a separate bed, and beaten by her husband, a willful woman can look forward to an eternity in hell: The Prophet (the blessing and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "I saw paradise and stretched my hands towards a bunch (of its fruits) and had I taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains. I also saw the Hell-fire and I had never seen such a horrible sight. I saw that most of the inhabitants were women." The people asked: "O Allah’s Apostle! Why is it so?" The Prophet (the blessing and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "Because of their ungratefulness." It was asked whether they are ungrateful to Allah. The Prophet (the blessing and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "They are ungrateful to their companions of life (husbands) and ungrateful to good deeds."[13] [Muhammad said], "O women! Give to charity, for I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-Fire were women." The women asked, "O Allah’s Apostle! What is the reason for it?" He said: "O women! You curse frequently, and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. O women, some of you can lead a cautious man astray." However, even if these women were to stop cursing and to start thanking their husbands, their prospects for the afterlife would still leave much to be desired. According to Muhammad, Muslim women can look forward to an eternity of standing in corners, waiting for men to come and have sex with them: Allah’s Apostle (The blessing and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "In Paradise there is a pavilion made of a single hollow pearl sixty miles wide, in each corner of which there are wives who will not see those in the other corners; and the believers will visit and enjoy them." Hence, good Muslim women who respect their husbands in this life will have the opportunity to continue their sexual service to their husbands in "Paradise." Apparently, Muhammad considered this to be an appropriate view of Paradise; many women would rightly disagree.

@@jacobsenh7383 If you think paradise in that concepts you have never red the Quran and didn't umderstand it my friend. Please be neutral and check again. Are you really sure "Paradise" is a place only for satisfying sexual desires? That is ridiculous. It is described as a reward for those who believed in God(Allah) in true way and did goodness. Let's see Paradise from Quran's perspective: Chapter 55(Rahman) 47. But for him who fears to stand before his Lord there are two Gardens 49. Having many varieties of trees. 51. In both of them there are two fountains flowing free. 53. Therein will be every kind of fruit in pairs. 55. They will recline on couches above carpets, the linings of which will be of thick brocade. And the ripe fruit of the two Gardens will be within easy reach. 57. Therein will also be chaste maidens of modest gaze, whom neither man nor Jinn will have touched before them 59. As if they were rubies and small pearls. 61. The reward of goodness is nothing but goodness. 63. And besides these two, there are two other Gardens 65. Dark green with foliage. 67. Therein also will be two springs gushing forth with water. 69. In both of them there will be all kinds of fruit, and dates and pomegranates. 71. Therein will be maidens, good and beautiful 73. Fair maidens with lovely black eyes, well-guarded in tents 75. Whom neither man nor Jinn will have touched before them 77. Reclining on green cushions and beautiful carpets. 79. Blessed is the name of thy Lord, Master of Glory and Honour. Surely we cannot deny our Lord's blessings. Also Chapter Baqarah(Cow) 26. And give glad tidings to those who believe and do good works, that for them are Gardens beneath which flow streams. Whenever they are given a portion of fruit therefrom, they will say: 'This is what was given us before,' and gifts mutually resembling shall be brought to them. And they will have therein mates perfectly pure, and therein will they abide. In another situation, a young came to him and asked for a permission to fornicate with women. Some of the companions got angry when they heard it. But He(pbuh) didn't refuse to talk with him. Prophet asked him: Would you be pleased if such is done with your mother, your sister or your aunt? Young says "No!". Prophet says: Those you want to fornicate with they are someone's mother, sister or aunt. So don't do it. He(pbuh) also says: Paradise lies under the feet of mothers. I think those are enough evidences to believe that women is precious for Islam and they will be much higher in afterlife. While we are criticizing something we need to get rid of our prejudices. I'm saying it myself while I'm saying something against my christian friends. Be with peace my friend, be with Islam.

*Islam honors women as mothers* Islam honors women greatly. It honors women as mothers who must be respected, obeyed and treated with kindness. Pleasing one's mother is regarded as part of pleasing Allah. Islam tells us that Paradise lies at the mother’s feet, i.e. that the best way to reach Paradise is through one's mother. And Islam forbids disobeying one’s mother or making her angry, even by saying a mild word of disrespect. The mother’s rights are greater than those of the father, and the duty to take care of her grows greater as the mother grows older and weaker. *Honoring parents in the Quran* All of that is mentioned in many texts of the Quran and Sunnah Prophetic traditions). For example, Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “And We have enjoined on man to be dutiful and kind to his parents” [al-Ahqaf 46:15] “And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honor. And lower unto them the wing of submission and humility through mercy, and say: ‘My Lord! Bestow on them Your Mercy as they did bring me up when I was young’” [al-Isra 17:23, 24] Honoring parents in the Sunnah Ibn Majah (2781) narrated that Mu’awiyah ibn Jahimiah al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I want to go for jihad (battle) with you, seeking thereby the Face of Allah and the Hereafter. He said, “Woe to you! Is your mother still alive?” I said, Yes. He said, “Go back and honor her.” Then I approached him from the other side and said: O Messenger of Allah, I want to go for jihad with you, seeking thereby the Face of Allah and the Hereafter. He said, “Woe to you! Is your mother still alive?” I said, Yes. He said, “Go back and honor her.” Then I approached him from in front and said, O Messenger of Allah, I want to go for jihad with you, seeking thereby the Face of Allah and the Hereafter. He said, “Woe to you! Is your mother still alive?” I said, Yes. He said, “Go back and honor her (lit. stay by her feet), for there is Paradise.” (Classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih Sunan Ibn Majah. It was also narrated by al-Nasai with the words: “Stay with her for Paradise is beneath her feet.”) Al-Bukhari (5971) and Muslim (2548) narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: “O Messenger of Alaah, who is most deserving of my good company?” He said: “Your mother.” He said: “Then who?” He said: “Your mother.” He said: “Then who?” He said: “Your mother.” He said: “Then who?” He said: “Then your father.” And there are other texts which we do not have room to mention here. *Obligation on sons to spend on their mothers* One of the rights which Islam gives to the mother is that her son should spend on her if she needs that support, so long as he is able and can afford it. Hence for many centuries it was unheard of among the people of Islam for a mother to be left in an old-people’s home or for a son to kick her out of the house, or for her sons to refuse to spend on her, or for her to need to work in order to eat and drink if her sons were present. *Islam honors women as wives* Islam urges the husband to treat his wife in a good and kind manner, and says that the wife has rights over the husband like his rights over her, except that he has a degree over her, because of his responsibility of spending and taking care of the family’s affairs . Islam states that the best of the Muslim men is the one who treats his wife in the best manner, and the man is forbidden to take his wife’s money without her consent. Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “and live with them honorably” [al-Nisa 4:19] “And they (women) have rights similar (to those of their husbands) over them to what is reasonable, but men have a degree (of responsibility) over them. And Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise” [al-Baqarah 2:228] And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “I urge you to treat women well.” (Narrated by al-Bukhari, 331; Muslim, 1468) And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The best of you is the one who is best to his wife, and I am the best of you to my wives.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3895; Ibn Majah, 1977; classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih al-Tirmidhi) *Islam honors women as daughters* And Islam honors women as daughters, and encourages us to raise them well and educate them. Islam states that raising daughters will bring a great reward. For example, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever takes care of two girls until they reach adulthood, he and I will come like this on the Day of Resurrection,” and he held his fingers together. (Narrated by Muslim, 2631) Ibn Majah (3669) narrated that ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Whoever has three daughters and is patient towards them, and feeds them, gives them to drink and clothes them from his riches, they will be a shield for him from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.” (Classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih Ibn Majah) *Islam honors women as sisters and aunts* Islam honors women as sisters and as aunts. Islam enjoins upholding the ties of kinship and forbids severing those ties in many texts. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “O people! Spread (the greeting of) salam, offer food (to the needy), uphold the ties of kinship, and pray at night when people are sleeping, and you will enter Paradise in peace.” (Narrated by Ibn Majah, 3251; classed as sahih by al-Albani in Sahih Ibn Majah) Al-Bukhari (5988) narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah, may He be exalted, said to the ties of kinship: ‘Whoever upholds you, I will support him, and whoever breaks you, I will cut him off.’” All of these qualities may co-exist in a single woman: she may be a wife, a daughter, a mother, a sister, an aunt, so she may be honored in all these ways. Women enjoy these rights in Islam To conclude: Islam raised the status of women, and made them equal with men in most rulings. So women, like men, are commanded to believe in Allah and to worship Him. And women are made equal to men in terms of reward in the Hereafter. Women have the right to express themselves, to give sincere advice, to enjoin what is good and forbid what is evil, and to call people to Allah. Women have the right to own property, to buy and sell, to inherit, to give charity and to give gifts. It is not permissible for anyone to take a woman’s wealth without her consent. Women have the right to a decent life, without facing aggression or being wronged. Women have the right to be educated; in fact it is obligatory to teach them what they need to know about their religion. Anyone who compares the rights of women in Islam with their situation during the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic days of ignorance) or in other civilizations will understand that what we are saying is true. In fact we are certain that women are given the greatest honor in Islam.

*Rights of women in other civilizations* There is no need for us to mention the situation of women in Greek, Persian or Jewish society, but even Christian societies had a bad attitude towards women.

I am a Muslim woman. I only get half share of any inheritance of what my brothers get. I am a Muslim woman. My testimony is only half that of a man. I am a Muslim woman. During prayers, I cannot pray in the same row as my sons but must always be behind them. I am a Muslim woman. Before I go out of my house, they tell me that I must first get my husbands permission to leave the house. I am a Muslim woman. As a wife, my husband is entitled to marry 3 other woman, but I can only be married to one, at a time. I am a Muslim woman. As a wife, I am ordered to obey the husband. If I don't, he has rights to beat me. I am a Muslim woman. As a wife I am only entitled to 1/8 of my husbands estate (thats if he only has one wife, otherwise I am only entitled to 1/32 of his estate if he has 4 wives.) But my husband is entitled to half of whatever I own upon my death, if I have no children, and 1/4 if I left children. I am a Muslim woman. While the men can wear anything they want, I am required to cover my whole body save for my face and hands. Falsely conjectured. I am a Muslim woman. I cannot divorce my husband unless he agrees. And before divorcing I must have Sex with current husband. I am a Muslim woman. My ex husband doesnt bother to pay for my childrens maintenance. It is not an offence. But if I fail to obey my husband to have sex with him, I am nusyuz. And the angels will not visit me for I am cursed for the night I am a Muslim woman. I cannot marry a Jew or a Christian. A Muslim man can because it is the way of expansion of Islam. Qur’an says If woman is a leader of a country, the country will never succeed. It also mentions a husband may simply get rid of one of his undesirable wives. I live in a Muslim land and experienced it from inside and outside, whereas you're living in western world. Its best for you to move in true Muslim country, as you mentioned woman rights.

So sad for Muslim woman.

FACT #1: The Qur’an allows (or, perhaps, commands) men to beat their wives into subservience. If a wife doesn’t listen to her husband, the husband should admonish her. If that doesn’t work, he is to make her sleep in a separate bed. However, if the wife still doesn’t respect her husband’s authority, even after she has been banished to another bed, the husband is told to physically punish her. Consider three translations of the following verse: Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret what Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High Exalted, Great.[7] Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.[8] Men are the protectors And maintainers of women, Because Allah has given The one more (strength) Than the other, and because They support them From their means. Therefore the righteous women Are devoutly obedient, and guard In (the husband’s) absence What Allah would have them guard. As to those women On whose part ye fear Disloyalty and ill-conduct, Admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); But if they return to obedience, Seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, Great (above you all).[9] Muslim translators have struggled with this passage and have sought ways to water down its clear meaning. For instance, Ali adds the word "lightly" to his translation, which doesn’t occur in the original Arabic. However, even if we allow Ali to tone down the parts of the Qur’an he finds offensive, the verse still allows husbands to beat their wives. Hence, according to God’s last and greatest prophet, spousal abuse is permissible, and perhaps even required. Modern nations that have established laws against spousal abuse are therefore in direct violation of Allah’s command in the Qur’an.

I'm surprised you didn't mention An-Nisa 4: 34 in which Allah sets out the circumstances in which men are to beat their wives: "Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand." [Sahih International 1997] Allah's messenger returned to this theme in his farewell sermon: "You have rights over your wives and they have rights over you. You have the right that they should not defile your bed and that they should not behave with open unseemliness. If they do, God allows you to put them in separate rooms and beat them but not with severity." Alfred Guillaume (1955) The Life of Muhammad. The very reason why paganistic Paulian Trinitarians are losing their followers... 1) their logic and math are not humans, 2) Jesus said: (father is the only true god), trinitarians say ( gods are 3 and enmeshed as 1-lol), 3) show them their bible- they will either ignore facts stated or be mad cows...😁😁😁 # Jesus says that he has come to destroy families by making family members hate each other. He has "come not to send peace, but a sword." 10:34-36 # Jesus explains why he speaks in parables: to confuse people so they will go to hell. 4:11-12 # Those who disobeyed the Old Testament law were killed without mercy 10:28-29 # All non-Christians must be killed. 3:23 # 144,000 Jews will be going to heaven; everyone else is going to hell. 7:4 # Jesus makes war. 19:11 # Jesus advises his followers to mutilate themselves by cutting off their hands and plucking out their eyes. He says it's better to be "maimed" than to suffer "everlasting fire." 18:8-9 # God will set the entire earth on fire so that he can burn non-believers to death. 3:7 # Homosexuals (those "without natural affection") and their supporters (those "that have pleasure in them") are "worthy of death" - - along with gossips, boasters, and disobedient children. 1:31-32 # God will cause us to believe lies so that he can damn our souls to hell. 2:11-12 # God punishes everyone for someone else's sin; then he saves them by killing an innocent victim. 5:12 # God had his son murdered to keep himself from hurting others for things they didn't do. 1:7 # God makes peace through blood. 1:19-20 # The people you should mourn are dead nonbelievers. They have no hope (because they're going to hell). 4:13
