It was great to see these in action, in a real, outdoor painting situation! We were really interested in how you varied the grip on the brush to achieve a variety of mark-making. We've noticed that accomplished watercolorists often have a relatively small brush kit on the larger side, and they use skill and control to get the whole range from broad to fine strokes from surprisingly big brushes! Some don't even carry flat brushes, instead using very large, high quality rounds. Thanks for sharing this!

@@EmilyOlsonArt This is wrong. You are wrong. Um...you are an INFLUENCER... What you say matters. This is disgraceful. How is a(nother) review of a Russian watercolor product at all helpful? It's not. Please rethink your actions because they are HURTING others. I have unsubbed btw, and I will never buy another product from Blick ever again. Like watercolor paint brands, you and Blick have far too many other better and more ethical competitors for me to choose from. There are no excuses for this. None. You owe Ukraine, its refugees, many of whom watch your channel btw, and many of your subs who have family trapped in Ukraine, a HUGE apology. I hope that you see the error of your ways.

Great review video! I love my white nights paints, but I did some research (making sure to buy the colors with good lightfastness and those using the pigments I prefer) before buying them, then decided to buy the pans individually to build my own set. They all work great and I really enjoy painting with them.

Thank you for this great review. I love White Nights. It’s been my go to set for the last 4 years. Like some of the other commenters, I bought the 36 full pan set when it was $39.00 or something. The price has almost quadrupled since the war started. I particularly love the vibrancy of the colors, but have also noticed mixing various colors together can make mud. I’m now integrating W&N, Daniel Smith & Holbein into my pallette.

Thank you for your sunny video. I also love White Nights. I have tried every colour from their range. They have excellent colours and weak colours as well. Like every brand. You just need to fing the right one for particular painting. Its a long and beatiful process. I have learned a lot from Russian artists who preferred White Nights and they can do magic with these colours.

I don't know if it's the humidity of where I live but i'm impressed you are able to touch the pans and not getting your fingers dirty. My experience is that they are always "wet"/sticky. Not a problem when they are in a palette but I need to be careful when I need to move them for whaterver reason. Bright side is they reactivate if I just stare at them long enough lol

White Nights were my very first western style “Artist” grade watercolor set. I still love and use them all of the time; interspersing their use round robin style with my other brand sets of paint. Funny, I never noticed the muddy mixtures, although I have their two large sets of 24 and 36 colors, so maybe I just didn’t attempt the same mixes as you did. Thank you for another wonderful, thoroughly informative video!

I recently switched from Schmincke to White Nights. I had to adapt to how crude the pigment is in WN at first, but I quickly fell in love and can't imagine going back to other brands now. And yes, the price is definitely a part of it. One tip for those of you who want to travel with these or simply move the pans around in your own palettes: buy them in tubes! They are obnoxiously sticky!! I wa strying to rearrange travel palettes and it was an absolute mess with how sticky the White Nights pans are! (you won't notice that if you just store them in their original box)

Finally someone talking about White Nights. Those were my first professional paints, that I still use, by the way. I made a palette with 36 colors that I use the most (considering I’m most a portrait painter), and I absolutely love them. They are a lot more controlled that Daniel Smith, in a traditional way, I mean. I get some predictability and control with them, which allows me to achieve realistic results (in skin tones, for example) easier. They also build up really well. Also, their Paynes Gray is one off my favorites for shadows.

Nice to see a review of White Nights! They are the watercolours I have bought when I started painting, and the same set you are reviewing (just an older box): the pans are full pans (not half pans like most of the other brands) and the price is good. I had a problem with yellow ochre since day one though: it feels "gummy" and it's very difficult for me to get any color from it. I have bought a larger set later and had the same issue with other two colors... Some colors are amazing, others have this "rubbery" texture that makes impossible to get any color out of them. I'm not sure if this is something that could happen with maybe old pans, or the pigments were mixed wrong with the binder, or... I don't know...

I bought the 36 set of white nights, and I absolutely love them. They’re very transparent the majority of them and they’re so rich in colour and they don’t lose anything after trying. I think a biggest that would be a much better overview of these paints, but this review was extremely well done, but I would definitely invest in more colours so that you can have a good play around. The Rosa ones are beautiful to they are professional quality. I Or as many as I could now before people realise how good they are and the price goes up. They are extremely affordable for pants, the Rosa gallery and yet they’re just as good as QOR or Daniel Smith in my opinion

I adore White Nights paints. They were the first set of proper watercolours that I bought and I really enjoy using them. Some truly gorgeous colours. Really good value for money when I bought them, especially compared to other brands. I think they use honey as a binder, so they are sticky and won't dry out for ages. That said, I did find their Prussian Blue is very weak and not worth buying. Also, the suppliers here no longer import the brand due to the war and artists not wanting to support the country (I couldn't find what the company's stance is, but they seem to still be in production, so . . .). Roman Szmal is a Polish brand and they seem to be a good alternative with similar qualities to them.

Nice painting! I esp. like the rocks on top of the mountain in contrast with the smooth(er) grass below. How sweet that the dog came to say hi to you =). I once bought a White Nights 12 color set with plastic box. The box was too bulky and I wasn’t impressed with some of the colors (ie, blues looked similar). It was returned. Later, I bought a 24 color set in a cardboard box ‘cause it was on sale. I put them in my own metal box and I’m much happier. I agree that the yellow ochre is weak. I don’t use my WN’s often but only because I have other sets to use. If I could go back, I would just choose one or two brands and stick with them. Too many paints and you end up not using them much, even if they are good quality.

Save your pennies for a 36 full pan set. They are super awesome. Rosa..vs White Nights - tough! I'm comparing to Daniel Smith and W&N. I did lightfast tests and I can't live without that deep green if I'm in a mood to use my larger set. I buy that green just to have. It's only in certain sets that has it. It's obvious I like them. I definitely replace the three yellows with Indian Yellow PY150 and Indian Gold to improve the tranparency, and so I get one empty slot for extra color (maybe for dark blue either Indanthrone, Prussian or Indigo). I love white nights paint. I used a primary mixing triad for a long time, using azure, quin rose pr 122 and indian yellow py150. Their py150 is one of my favorite versions, and is what I buy to put in student palettes. The Green pg8 is one of my all time favorite greens. I did my own light fast testing on it and after 6 mo in the window, there was zero change on my swatch. It is a hard color to match, to get deep enough. I finally found with perylene green and green gold I able to duplicate it. Another color of theirs that I absolutely love is Rose pr81, it is also not lightfast, but it is so beautiful! It is a way better version of opera rose without fluorescent dye. They are the only company that carries a single pigment, or did. They just discontinued it 😢. Sennelier also has a pr 81:1, but it is sadly not the same, it is a complete different hue.

Hullo Emily, I am glad that you created the lovely artwork from the paint in addition to the swatches! I purchased a set of 24 white knights from a seller on e-Bay and they allowed me to substitute colors that I did not want for others that I wanted! So I avoided the problematical pigments. I am curious if you have tried any of Denise Soden’s collections of DaVinci Paints? I would especially like to see you create with her “Embrace Opacity Palette” is this a road you might take? I hope you have an interest in painting outside of the transparency of usual watercolor painting. I have seen so many people on KZread break away from traditional methods of painting with watercolors, I even found several videos where they are mixing white for tints and not using the white of their paper! I look forward to seeing your next video, I hope you put opaque watercolors on your to do list. Be safe, have a lovely day!

I bought almost every color of their full pans for less than a dollar for each, a big arty store decided to get rid of the collection because of the conflict going on there, best decision ever since the quality is amazing. Even the new metallics, pastels and shadow collection are great.

Sorry I could not let you know in advance others have had controversy with the reviews of same, with some suppliers discontinuing the product. Nevsky Palette produces several types of watercolor paints. "White Nights" is a professional series, "Ladoga" (possibly unavailable in your country) is a transitional series from student to professional, "Sonnet" is for students. There are several more children's watercolors "Honey" of decent quality for very young children. And recently, the manufacturer changed the formulation to some professional paints, paints with 3 pigments in the composition or non-light-resistant paints were transferred to the Ladoga line, but they supplemented the palette of "White Nights" with better options. Russian artists are very demanding of paints)))) In our country, the colors of the White Nights are often scolded even for minor mistakes. Therefore, the manufacturer always keeps his finger on the pulse)) I recommend trying a series of granulating paints. I really liked the gray-pink mist, purple shadow, aquamarine mist, orange mist. The metallics series is very good, but it's pampering for decorative postcards.

Thx for sharing! I’ve heard this is a great brand, especially for beginners at the price it USED TO be 😂 A full pan used to be $2.50 and a tube $4.99, and sets were half price they are now. At the prices they are now, I would just buy a set of QOR, W&N, or Daniel Smith for a few dollars extra. I wanted to try this brand for such a long time because of the price it used to be, but I waited to long and prices went up because politics. But, with all the ppl in the comments saying “not to support murderers”, I may just spend a few thousand on this brand because the ppl at White Nights are everyday ppl like me, haven’t murdered anyone, and just want to live life and support their families.

In Russia a lot of people do support the war. They had the propaganda for years. They will tell you about Ukraine bombing Luhansk and Donetsk (that was silently occupied by Russian army in 2014), they will tell you NATO was trying to attack Russia, they believe in battle insects that are created in American labs to infect Russians (it was really said on tv, not a joke). All of these thing are on tv for yearr and Russian people believe it. They also believe that there was no massacre in Bucha, Irpen, Izum and other cities. They think that their army saves and protects Ukrainians (actually killing them but it’s not shown on tv).

I bought these colours today while staying in Prague. You mentioned how surprised you were that these watercolors are opaque. I love Rosa Gallery watercolours (Ukrainian product) and they are opaque as well and even more intense in their pigments than the White Night watercolors. So maybe this is an Eastern European thing? It's possible that the way these paints are made have something to do with the art history of the Russian countries, at least this is what I suspect to be the case. Btw White Nights have new colors available too. Thank you for your videos :-)

That’s probably true, most of the time you can spot the difference between Eastern and Western European watercolour artists style. Most artists from post soviet countries worked with these paints, literally generations of them. There’s a really interesting interview with English subtitles which Nevskaya Palitra (the manufacturer of White Nights and Master Class paints) published on their KZread channel, the artist is Ilya Ibriaev “Илья Ибряев - акварель это целый мир!”

@@creativespark7371 to clarify, I feel uncomfortable paying for white nights because I do not want to mindlessly send money to a country whose leaders criminally invaded another country...which is ruining one country and killing it's people, and also ruining their own people, sending them off to die in horrible conditions.. I can't do much about what's happening but I can try at least to not knowingly send money to a country that the government will get it's hands on that money and kill people with it.. at the same time I know that not everyone looks at things from this point of view or perhaps have never been informed and invited to consider it.. so I don't agree with hate being spread. I basically believe the polar opposite of you, and I feel like my information is less biased and manipulated.. so I'm not interested in discussing it further with you I just needed to clarify that Russia needs to stop their invasion... I don't care what level you thought Ukraine were at in terms of being truely free and democratic, invading their country means this isn't a two way thing. All Russia would need to do to end this is leave land that doesn't belong to them and stop aggression.. Ukraine doesn't have a choice because they're defending. Not the same thing really is it?

As someone who did post here about this being a Russian-owned company, I’m disgusted that I now find myself in similar company of those who harassed someone to the point of leaving YT. I don’t know who the artist is that you’re referencing, but the easy action to take is to remind folks of the war and then…. Not watch the video! Which is exactly what I did here. No need to hound someone about it, no need to be rude. If you disagree enough, then unsubscribe. But people here and people there are just trying to make a living. I recognize that. And it’s her choice to buy the paints. It’s my choice to watch. But harassing and hounding? No, that’s not right. That’s not how you communicate so that others understand your point (which, they don’t have to agree with, I’m just talking understanding).

I would think this set would be more difficult for a beginner especially if they watch other videos and the artists say you can mix this green with ultramarine and lemon yellow, or make it olive by adding your red to it. Or mix the purple…. If someone spends a bit more on a Daniel smith or M Graham set they will be able to mix these. Generally Russian painters use White Knights a lot. Probably very cheap for them and available everywhere. So if a beginner is learning from Russian artists then it may be different. I wouldn’t recommend this for a beginner. If they can’t afford a 6 basic color set, of professional paints then get a cotman student set ( which personally I do not like. But then again I don’t care much for many of the Winsor and Newton line.)

They have newer sets in this box with more transparent paints as they have been so requested over the years, I'm surprised she didn't get one of them. I think the botanical one is the best as far as the pigments you get in a 12 pan travel set. The one in the video is their classic 12 pan line up they've had for years and years.

But truly saying, I’ve been painting with them for 4 years and my mixes always looked dirty and dull, I always blamed myself for this, I blamed my skills, however, after trying other professional and student grade brands I understood that White nights are for no good. I do not recommend these watercolor, better to use Winsor n Newton Cotman or Van Gogh watercolors for beginners.

I went to do a review of these paints about a year or so ago and came under terrible abuse from other artists, saying things like, by me buying the paints I personally am supporting Russia invade Ukraine. It got so bad I almost closed down my channel. I just think it is really interesting that of all the comments on your channel, thankfully, I wasn’t able to find a single comment calling you names or insinuating you were supporting ludicrous things. I couldnt wipe the pans as the paint went every where!!!! I couldnt use them as you couldnt even get them into a palette due to the mess. I emailed them sent a photo and they replied and said thats how they should be. I then bought a set in a paĺete, all the pans were loose and again trying to get them back in i was covered. I will never buy these again they are like jelly!!! Yours look quite set but mine wasnt.

I bought the 24 colour white nights set after hearing a few people rave about this brand. Most of the colours are quite nice but I find a lot of the paints crack very badly in the pans and I'm constantly trying to mix them up into a smooth consistency. I won't be buying this brand again. It must be nice to be able to paint in a white lace top. If I tried that, I would have it ruined with paint spatters in no time LOL!
