Are Wheelies Bad For Your Motorcycle? | MC Garage

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Okay, so everyone knows that wheelies are one of the purest forms of joy known to humanity, but could they be bad for your bike? That depends. In this video from the MC Garage, Ari explains the mechanical risks of ripping wheelies.
--
Okay, so everyone knows that wheelies are one of the purest forms of joy known to humanity, but could they be bad for your bike? That depends. As a rule, wheelies aren’t bad for your bike, but bad wheelies are.
What do I mean by bad wheelies? I'm talking about sloppy, jerky, uncontrolled wheelies where you're revving out the engine and dropping the clutch to get the front wheel up, then chopping the throttle, or worse yet riding it out to the rev limiter and slamming the front wheel down.
If that's how you're doing wheelies, please stop. Bad wheelies like that are torturing your clutch and causing excess wear on the friction plates and clutch basket, shock-loading your chain and sprockets, and hammering your fork. If you slam that front end down hard enough or often enough, you're liable to blow a fork seal. That means barfing oil all over your brakes and having to do a costly or time-consuming fork rebuild.
So are there non-harmful wheelies? Yes. Smooth, controlled wheelies where you lift the front with clutch finesse or pure horsepower and then set it down again gently aren’t going to do any harm to your bike. You see 600s, 1000s, and MotoGP bikes doing those kind of power wheelies all the time in racing. It’s just a function of accelerating hard enough that the bike begins to rotate up on the rear wheel.
Even if you’re as smooth as can be and have perfect technique and can ride wheelies for miles, it is possible that cruising with the front wheel four feet off the ground can starve your engine for oil. That’s not an issue for most bikes, but some models, like Suzuki’s SV650, are kind of famous for seizing due to oil starvation caused by extended wheelies. Yikes.

If you keep your riding to 50% wheelies and 50% stoppies you can decrease tire wear by 100% and never have to replace your tires. That's the power of math!

  • @Zalonka

    @Zalonka

    7 жыл бұрын

Sorry to get technical but you would only be saving 50% of each tire which out of 100% would only be 25% overall. So 25% + 25% = 50%. You would only be "reducing" tire wear by 50%. That said generally you skid the front tire for a second for a stoppie which actually is an increase on tire wear. Note when you POWER wheelie like you are suppose to. You are using up more center tread like hard acceleration off the line. So you really are not saving any tire wear by doing stoppies or wheelies. Maybe 20% combined at maximum if you are a pro..

Take it from someone who has been in the motorcycle stunt game for a very long time....riding wheelies is really hard on your bike and if you ride em a lot you will destroy your engine noooo doubt about it! Plus it can be hard on your frame and everything else as well and oh yeah if you are new to riding motorcycles then forget about wheelies and just concentrate on learning to ride your motorcycle safely because the road is unforgiving and a lot of the time you don't get a second chance to be smarter next time....trust me I have seen it 1000 times....guys go out and buy powerful superbikes for their first bike and a week later they think they are a stunt rider....don't be stupid be safe and smart and live to ride another day....once you have developed good street skills which takes a lot of time not a week then you can always go find a local stunt spot and fall in with a good group of stunters and they will point you in the rite direction....take your time build your skills wear all your gear always assume that the car coming at you or next to you is going to turn in front of you or run over you and stay alert no day dreaming not paying attention or drinking and riding....be safe everybody God Bless and have fun! ❤️

a motorcycle's transmission is built in a way to allow clutchless up and downshifts. in fact some bikes now come with quickshifters and autoblip downshift assists. the transmission is called a sequential transmission. you can google that to see what it is. to upshift you will need to unload the transmission by closing the throttle. close shift and open. as fast as you can. this works better the faster you are going. around town it's much harder to do and clunkier. downshifting is a bit more of an advanced technique but is possible. again, works better the faster you are going. the new bikes with electronic controlled throttles can utilize an autoblipp assist setting in the computer which will open the throttle when the shift sensor senses you are pushing on the lever. so when you click it down a gear it's as seamless as an upshift.

talk about the ducati 999... they were the last of a handbuilt bike era.... i crashed my ducati 999 at about 80 mph into two trees and a rock i broke 30+ bones punctured lung broken sacrum and both pelvis bones on each side, reconstructed shoulder, lacerated liver and spleen, it would be awesome if you can do a throwback to the ducati 999, there is soo little footage and i drove over 5 states just to get my hands on a mint condition 2006 ducati 999 with 3500 miles i crashed at only 6500 or so, only bend the rear subframe, so i plan to fix the bike, but it would be awesome if you can do a video on the bike, its soo unitque from the poli-elipsodial headlights to the termignoni exhaust known to be one of the most frustrating exhausts to install, and its dry clutch setup with such a mechanical sound, i personally took mine off, got some red retainer cups with polished springs and polished my plate to a chrome like shine and was down the road... the only thing i hated was the crazy exhaust temps due to poor ventilation placed perfectly on the track but not on the street right by the calfs and upper thigh if your just cruising with shorts... i know your should always wear full gear which i actually was during my crash, i split my helmet in two went thru a three bounced off another onto a boulder which my bike smashed into, it would be awesome if you actually made a video was mayb able to shout me out and help me and educate many on the iconic ducati 999... especially the 2006 model with the red powder coated frame to signify the last year of production, this bike was awesome, and is such a hard find. Looking back i cannot believe i even was able to get such a bike between my legs, i did have an issue with the rear brake not bleeding and holding pressure, that would be awesome if u addressed that and how to properly care for them, because ultimately that is why i couldnt slow down enough for the sharp left turn i tried the fronts and started to endo so i slowly let off and had no rear brakes after sitting a night and unfortunately was the end of that and almost my life if i wasnt lifestarred to the hospital... please do a informative video of the ducati 999 series they won all superbike championships in those years so that is a true statement of the awesome power and lowdown torque and grunt of the bike... let me know if your looking for something to help write content i would love to relocate and work with your team.. thanks.. hope to see a video of the ducati 999... take care.. -pete piccolo

It can shorten bottom end life, more on sportbikes than detuned standards. Standards have less power but usually botom ends as strong if not stronger than top sport bikes. Sport bikes shave everything to thin tolerance for power that comes stock. OLDER GS suzukis bottom ends could handle almost twice stock power on bottom end. That is why so many drag racers back in the day loved them. Today most are not that over engineered. Check with shops, they may be able to tell you more on specific models, it will vary. Not all bottom ends are created equal.

I know what causes headshake. I'm sure you'll be trying to accelerate when your thumbs are bashed to pieces against the tank, TheMadRatterUK. It's not as automatic in the thinking of someone who only wants to slow down and stop before they perish.

Good video, thanks. Didn't mention the increased likelihood of causing pitting or notching of the steering head bearings over time and premature wear to the gearbox dogs especially second gear. Also here in Oz if the police see you doing it you can be fined for not 'being in complete control of the vehicle'...

I did a solid handful of clutch ups in second on my current bike (first bike ever learning to attempt this on), and I'm sure that's why, 10,000 miles into ownership, I may be having 2nd gear dog issues. Definitely worth knowing, as I didn't back then. Couple thousand dollar learning experience right there.

I have had to change steering-head bearings a few times, because I put the front down a bit too hard. The head bearings on many bikes are far more fragile than you might think. That goes for Aprilias like the one in my avatar, and ZX14s... and don't even start on early R1s with ball race bearings...

Not so much with tapered roller bearings most bikes use now, they can put up with alot of abuse before you notice notchy steering. Older bikes with ball bearings can be ruined pretty quickly with bad wheelies, you'll then start to feel the handlebars getting stuck in the centre.

Old style bearings were a bunch of loose balls laid in a couple of grooved races (one on either side) capturing the balls. Specific tension is required on the head nut to keep those little balls moving freely but not too freely. If you THUNK the front down enough times, those balls begin to leave tiny detents in those races enough to create notchy feeling steering action. There's a video earlier on this channel showing how to maintain steering head bearings.

Here is another topic for you.... on my adv bike you can ride it seated in the enter of the seat and upright, but for aggressive riding you really need to "ride on the front wheel" - with your chest and head over the front end. this helps with front end feel and stability. Can you compare this characteristic on different types of bikes - standard, sport, adv, cruiser, etc.,to get the most out of spirited riding - changing your body position relative to the front end of the bike can make a big difference

Used to power wheelie my (former) RC-51, every. single. time I rolled on the throttle to pass someone. The beauty about a power wheelie on that bike is that after you ease off the throttle, the bike gently set itself down. With my (current) Honda Blackbird though; power wheelies are scary because of how long the bike is and how they tend to occur right at the upper half of the tach. I actively avoid them when under hard acceleration.

That's a very common opinion, but if you use your head a little and don't train wheeling in a trafic jam, there is no reason not do wheelies in public. And you can be sure, that a person who can really pull a wheelie is part of the best and thus safest drivers you are about to encounter on the road. Fear grannies and mommies, not the people who train riding a motorcycle as a hobby.

Peter Griffin I fear anyone who thinks they know everything about something. If someone thinks they are such a great rider that they can play around and do foolish things I fear being near them and I don't care if they are on a bike, in a car, a boat or a jet ski. I am just not a fan of wheelies or racing on public roads on bikes but I'm not a fan of squealing tires and drifting in cars either. There are enough dangers from others on the road and I don't want to be adding to those. Just my opinion here though, I am not trying to tell anyone what to do.
