Are we overreacting to Bama's portal woes? Does OSU have best roster in CFB? And Josh Pate joins us

Спорт

With Nick Saban out, a lot of Alabama players are hitting the portal. But are we overreacting to what's happening to Coach Kalen DeBoer's new team? Who has been the biggest beneficiary from the portal this year? Does Ohio State suddenly have the best roster in football? Cole Cubelic answers all these questions and more. Plus this week, we're joined by Josh Pate, host of Late Kick Live, for a wide-ranging discussion of college football and the SEC. We'll hear what Josh is excited about in 2024, what he's dreading, and who is poised to be the next big coach in college football. You won't want to miss this one.

Ultimately, if DeBoer can coach (evidence shows he can) then Bama will be fine. After BoB and Rees, Bama fans will realize that DeBoer/Grubb are much better offensive coaches. That should translate to improved consistently and more offensive success.

Wicked Pickles are EXCELLENT by the way. As for the buckeyes... IDK if they have the best roster in the country... but it has to be close just looking at the composite rankings they are certainly in the top 5. What I do know is that 9 of 11 starters, most that were draft eligible off what was one of the best defenses in the country will actually be BETTER in 2024. Caleb Downs lets Knowles slide Sonny Styles to Linebacker (OLB) full-time. This is poised to be in the running for best defense in OSU school history. I think the OSU defense will be Georgia cira 2021 level good. All the potentional is on the roster it has to be developed by where a buckeye fan sits right now, you're pretty stoked by how the near and long term future looks

And let's not pretend Michigan didn't just win barely throwing the ball with mediocre tackles and average receiver play.

Some great points guy's. I wanted to comment on a couple of things. First as a Bama fan last week I ran through a gamut of emotions and frankly was still processing coach's retirement as players departed which compounded the issue. After the dust settled only pissed with Isaiah because of all he did and the offensive staff we had coming in. Same could be said for Procter with the O-line coach it didn't get to me like IB. As the days went on I adjusted and settled down. Second point is I know You cant replace Saban with one man but ever since Kirby left its been a revolving door of assistant coached and I feel what we have now if they can stay together can do similar things as Saban did with the sum of the parts being almost equal to the whole of the greatest.

All the college teams are pro teams now. The NFL shares revenue fairly evenly. College unless changes are made in NIL money will be like MLB which doesn't share revenues very equally. You want to fix NIL and the transfer portal? One undergrad transfer. One post grad transfer. In both cases you have to sit out a year. It doesn’t count against your eligibility. No one is going to pay a bag for a guy sitting the bench. Players and coaches would be more committed to the transfer. Players and coaches lose. The sport wins.

If NIL and portal were all that were needed for a title, Jimbo would be going for a three-peat at A&M. Pate is correct. Lots of teams will get out coached. Additionally, without player development in the offseason in a consistent program, the quality of the game will drop off.....teams with all the money poaching the best players WILL create demand for change.

Cubelic you explained why Harbaugh just won the title. He ran them more Prostyle than college. Not a lot of recruiters on his staff doubling as position coaches. Coaches are actually coaching and the S/C is top notch! The College game is becoming more like the pros. Travaris Robinson is one of the best recruiters in the country. Saban was the DBs coach we all know that. Same with Kirby/ Muschamp. Secondary is their calling card.

Here's a possible "solution" to the current situation that I've already said before but we've never had a "high profile case" as the "case study" and Alabama has opened up a flaw in the transfer portal 30 day rule. I think it is absolutely fair for kids to leave when a coach retires/leaves. Here's what we should do from now on, though: the portal is open for kids to leave for 2 weeks (a month is asinine imo) but then immediately following this two weeks have a one week period for kids of ANY program to be able to contact universities that lost their coach and express interest and maybe even transfer to that school but set the limitation that it must be the player themselves that contact the school who lost their coach and the school replacing their coach cam ABSOLUTELY NOT be the ones to initiate the process. To me, this is fair because Alabama is not going to be the last university to see this happen. Big-time coaches will leave other schools in the future, and their fans will absolutely be in "despair." Fix it now before this happens again.

I think it’s interesting that y’all are talking football becoming more like basketball. Basketball teams had to adapt to the one-and-dones. That means every team’s roster changes every year. The teams that do well each year are the programs that can keep a core together for a few years, and then roster management becomes a key aspect. Then you have to coach them up to gel as a team. But it seems like recruiting is becoming roster management. Making sure you keep your roster in balance and scheming are going to be ultra important going forward.

DeBoer is in a tougher conference, but he will still have twice the talent he had at Washington even with the transfers. I believe Alabama will win at least two of their games against ranked teams. ESPN 2024 Rankings 1. Georgia 8. Missouri 14. LSU 15. Oklahoma 17. Tennessee Winning more will be an outperform and less an underperform. Kalen DeBoer has yet to underperform in his coaching career.

The transfer portal problem with Bama isn't Bama related - it's timing and calendar. The portal opens only one way when your coach leaves. That's wrong whether it's Bama or Memphis State. But instead of discussing the issue and finding resolution, 90% of college fans and media just seem to want to mock Alabama for 'finally getting theirs.' Don't be naive, folks, NIL money and transfer is coming for your team too. This needs fixing and needs fixing quick.

You immediately had to make an excuse for the guy and I've never seen a more predictable and stubbornly garbage OC. 100% of plays from shotgun, 70-85% of runs are inside zones, maybe 2% play action, and 1st and goal from the 2 means 3-4 shotgun spread plays regardless of how little it work against top competition. I'd rather tap the custodian for my OC.

Deboer may likely be great Xs and Os winning coach HOWEVER HE DESERVES HARSH CRITICISM for his botching of job#1 upon arrival at Bama: i.e. RETENTION of key staff and players most importantly DB coach and logical choice for DC Travaris Robinson. Somehow Deboer managed to alienate T-rob so badly in his first 24 hours that once he finally decided that he did want to hire T-rob as DC, T-rob turned him down to go to UGA for lower-level job and less money!! The loss of T-rob, and subsequent inability/unwillingness to bring in a proven premier DC, almost certainly is why Caleb Downs (GENERATIONAL TALENT), Trey Amos and Dezz Ricks all decided to leave. Moreover, both Zion Grady and Javion Hilson decommitted apparently because Deboer / his staff wound not simply communicate with them. Sure it's great to get Noah Carter, but that should not absolve Deboer of HARSH criticism for all this unnecessary attrition! It is beyond me how so many Bama fans and analysts can totally look past that. INEXCUSABLE!

Portal losses for Bama aren’t over yet, but it hasn’t been as bad as I thought it would be. The only way Bama could have lost Saban and not had a mass exodus was if they had a successor in place, and they’ve had such a hard time hiring good coordinators the past couple years there wasn’t a chance they could have a viable successor in place any time soon. Right now the team is still loaded and will certainly get some transfer help in the spring

@@SS11660 I just mean having an assistant already on staff that would be a viable replacement. Like if Saban retired in 2020 Sark would have been able to take over, or Kirby in 2014-2015. No one on Bama’s staff would have made sense to take over the job, but if they did have a good enough assistant and just elevated him instead of going with an outside hire there would be fewer players transfer out because the staff and system would still be in place. Nor with day....Plus the narrative about their WR room is comical at best. They return guys who had a combined 60 catches..lol....IF Egbuka was/is as elite as delusional HOMERS say and think? He would be in the Draft in April. Tate is ok but they lost their most talented guy in Rogers. Innis is a turtle...The rest are mostly youth. Henderson?...see Egbuka....The OG and the 1st round??....See henderson...The 2 DE's? ...see The OG....This place is about to implode...Wait until they have to deal with the prima donna Judkins🤣🤣....The schedule is shit as usual.

For 40 years southern teams have had all the advantages and it led to winning titles. But, nothing stays the same and finally there is going to be the type of parity that made the NFL iconic.

What is sickening is Deboer's botching of job#1 i.e. RETENTION of key staff and players most importantly DB coach and logical choice for DC Tiverius Robinson.

Hey Cole, maybe you can get Josh to own up to it, but he broke his own rule of talking about winners first in 23 when Auburn beat Arkansas. Not only that but he never once talked about the winner. Just want him to admit it instead of glossing over it.

The SEC has been buying players for at least the last 3 or 4 decade. Hell maybe even 5 decades. Thats the MAIN way the got to where they are. You guys can pooh pooh that all you want but its been documented so many times its not funny. Josh wont admit it so he's very disingenuous. Truth. I know he doesn't like to hear that but the truth is plain as his shiny head.

He did admit it. He said it is DIFFERENT now. Remember Auburn got Cam Newton for 180K. I'd argue he's the best college football player of all time. Now you have non starters making that much That is a HUGE DIFFERENCE

Of course Pate would only give the season a B+; there wasn't an SEC team who even made the final so of course there wasn't a "great" team. Absurd; this season was absolutely an A.

Absolutely over reacting! Bama will be fine. Saban’s first season went 7-6 and he had slim talent on that team. The new coach is still inheriting a lot of studs even though a few have left.
