Are We Living In A Black Mirror Episode?

Ғылым және технология

A few weeks ago, Apple unveiled their new Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset. Betting on a future where consumers prefer augmented reality and virtual reality over traditional smartphones like the iPhone.
Is this the next level in human communication? Or are we living inside a Blackmirror episode?

    I feel like the more we advance technology, more we lose touch with reality, and your identity until you slowly start to lose your mind until your existential anxiety starts to eat you alive until your nothing but a husk of what you used to be.

    As many people saying in this comment section that this serves no purpose or no one asked for this, I am not saying that they will be the same ones but when a more cheap and better product will be released, many will buy that. They are saying today that we don't want it and the many of them are gonna be the first one to buy it. And even if they don't, what about the upcoming generation?

    I find it interesting that the further into perceived progress we march, the less happy we get, and the more dystopian our civilisations get. I could argue this all day, but I refuse to do so on youtube.

    Until the goggles are cheaper and the battery life is longer, they are not practical. There is also the impracticality of having clunky goggles on your face.

    @michaelhenderson6786 Well, yeah. Of course it will improve with time. But a lot of time. This reminds me of 3d film. Every film studio thought those 3d glasses and movies would be the future of cinema for a while. So they started pumping out 3d movies like crazy. But do you know why 3d movies did not become standard? Because people had to wear the glasses while watching the movie. Until people don't have to wear face things for VR, it won't become the standard computer, regardless of how advanced it is.

    Definitely for this model. I'm sure they'll continue improving it though, it looks like a proof of concept currently. But yeah for now they suck for regular consumers, and as long as they don't fit into the form factor of literal glasses, smartphones dominate when it comes to convenience. As long as smartphones are more convenient, phones win (if people want to consider if they'll be overtaken sometime)

    Too bad the vision pro hasn't had the best reception. With the price of the headset compared to the features, it's really hard to sell something like this to the everyman. Meta with the Quest 3 has a higher chance of catching on than this due to its "reasonable" price point and wider app and existing user base. Now I don't want Zuck to rule the world, but if Meta can really ultilize the combination of reasonably priced, modestly spec'd headsets. Paired with Horizon OS becoming an open ecosystem for other manufacturers. I can see this becoming a reality.

    New tech is expensive. It's likely that about 30% of people just in the US can only afford the basics--an older car that runs, food, healthcare, shelter, maybe some very basic entertainment. It's hard to remember this because these people and the details of how their lives are, are virtually invisible to people who aren't in that demographic. My friend has a 15 year old car, a smart phone, and a laptop. Small house in a cheap part of the country. They don't buy new clothes except when necessary (and in places like target) or eat out. Vacations are local/regional and by car (the camp a lot) So, there is no extra money for this tech. What will happen to the people left behind? I'm actually asking what people think of this. Will we have 2 completely different tiers of people living totally different types of lives?

    Well I look at it a different way so to say. What you are saying is correct in the sense that the ones who adapt well to the future and are having steady income will be well off later in life. While the ones who can't do it or don't wanna do it will get thrown to the bottom of the "food chain"

  • @The_Real_StoicSage

    @The_Real_StoicSage

    And for your argument and view point. I say that now is the time. The ones who will adapt will succeed and the ones who can't or don't. Will fall back (it's inevitable) .

  • @The_Real_StoicSage

    @The_Real_StoicSage

    And to answer your question. The answer for now seems to be yes. Unless and until the people on the bottom of the food chain get more jobs to fulfill which in this case only a human could do. Which if you look at it from the future perspective. The options are limited. Both biology and chemistry and physics will surely be overtaken by ai with relatively low job occupations. But for computers and the stuff which will work even in the future. Arts, computer, and basically things related to those.
