While hiking the Appalachian Trail I encountered two Germans. I shared the Gospel with them. Everything they said I heard in English. And they apparently where hearing what I said in German. About a week later I had another encounter with them and we where unable to communicate. Either they were pretending not to know English, or the Holy Spirit for the sake of the Gospel allowed us to converse in the first encounter

Yes I agree. This too is a gift from God. Just like how in acts 2 the apostles spoke out in tongues and the people round about heard it in their own dialect. I think that still happens today and I've heard stories of this happening and even in my own church. It's one of the points I was going to make in my initial comments but I don't have the scripture on hand. I'll search for the scripture if you are keen on hearing about it but there are, spoken in the bible, different gifts of tongues and in Corinthians it identifies a gift of tongues which is spoken into God and uttering mysteries by the spirit of God and no one understands them, not even the one speaking...your story simply doesn't fit into that category because even you know what it is that you said, so therefore because scripture is not contrary to itself, we must conclude the evidence of two types of speaking in tongues; one being different languages, and one being a spiritual language unknown to man and the man speaking. I'll have to get the scriptures if you want them, I'm not actually prepared for a debate or anything just sharing my thoughts but I can certainly link the passages. God Bless.

@@Dallasgeri1 Yes, please. I'd be interested to hear. I think we more conservative types get a visceral reaction when people say it's THE SIGN of the Holy Spirit (ie. if you don't, you're not saved). That's not what the Bible teaches. But clearly, there is such a gift and I don't think it has "ceased'. However, I've seen demonstrations of it that seem pretty diabolical. I turned off it completely when a drunk person started speaking in tongues to me to show me they could. It was gibberish and that's what satan does. Then again, they've done the same with prophesy and the other gifts. However, clearly there are true gifts and I've seen quite a few myself such as the gift of healing of my mother of a small prayer in the lounge -ie not a Benny Hinn "concert" lol) However, I think it's time for me to revisit this chapter of tonques once again. Your thoughts are welcome. Thank you.

Precisely. Pastor Paul here speaks exactly my own convictions about the gift of tongues. I graduated from a charismatic high school and after more schooling, I travelled a lot and worshipped with many Christian denominations around the country, and so I've been in contact with many who claim to speak in tongues. I am friends with Christians from countries all around the world. I don't see anything today that even resembles the gift of tongues as described in the N.T.. Yet, I'm not willing to say the gift has ceased-who am I to declare such a thing? One passage does continue to baffle me concerning my own belief in this, and that's Acts 8:14-17. How did the Apostles know the Samaritan believers hadn't yet received the Spirit? The only indicator scripture gives that one has the Holy Spirit indwelling is the Fruit of the Spirit, and one or more of the gifts for service to the church. I do believe, being "filled" with the Spirit as in Ephesians 5:18 is something different than receiving the Spirit upon regeneration, because Paul is writing to Christians. This filling, I believe, is contingent upon our degree of yieldedness to the Spirit of Christ.

Right on, SB. Thus the different takes & contentions when talking about The Holy Spirit. Like you, I am on the fence when it comes to 'talking in tongues.' On the one hand, we have declaration from Acts revealing the disciples of The Christ talking in each listener's own language, which is a far cry from the 'gibberish' sounding rants of evangelicals & the like when they 'talk' in tongues. On the other hand, we have time tested, solid pastors like Derek Prince who champion the phenomenon. Paul Washer is right, & I always say that being Christ-like (a REAL Christian), is impossible without The Holy Spirit residing in one's soul (the intellect) and spirit. I constantly implore Adonai to exorcise my will (demons) with His Holy will by way of His Holy Spirit, & this is precisely why I tell everyone that I am not 'Christ-like', or...a Christian. Howard Pittman (a pastor & NDE) gives great insight into some of the workings of the spiritual realm. I've talked to him twice & everything he's experienced can be verified. Try to search (here on YT), 'Placebo,' ~ Howard Pittman,' and see what you think. Some of what he says resonates with former secret society members (one of them being Roger Morneau) and ex elitists. May our Lord's peace be with you & yours.

Why don't we see thousands fed with a few small loaves and fishes, why don't we see terrible storms at sea calmed by a command.? I have been to many healing crusades, and have never seen anything that I couldn't explain. I knew a brother in the Lord that died, and in the funeral parlour I saw half a dozen brothers lay hands on him and pray that he be raised, nothing happened, why. So two questions if spiritual tongues are foreign languages then what language did the Holy Spirit give you as a gift when you received the Holy Spirit. For Paul says in 1 Corinthians 14:5 “I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.” ‭‭ ( side note do you prophecy that the church may be edified as Paul desired to see). And two if tongues are forigen languages then what language is Paul speaking that NO MAN can interpret. “For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:2‬ ‭ I challenge you to read chapters 12-14 and just let the words speak. For them self. If you want you could say tongues are a foreign language of a country no man has seen a country that all who are in Christ belong to. But I personally see it more a keen to the language of a baby it make no sense to us or are selves but are father in heaven understands it and knows what we are saying. Tongues are real. And we should all speak in tongues don’t get tripped up on the teaching that only some have the gift and you can’t pull says when you all come together the context he is writing is when they are gathered together not all of them will do the same thing but they will do one thing. But another time they come together someone else will do it. This is what I have experienced I speak in tongues that I may be edified at home. Praying mysteries in the Holy Spirit that I don’t know. I have prophesied and had it confirmed that it came true of god. I have healed I have had prophetic words. But non of these at the same time. But we can all do them all as the Holy Spirit needs. Just read it from Paul mark how Paul describe tongues how he sees it used personally and for the body of Christ

There is a distinction between speaking in tongues as your prayer language received at the Baptism in the Holy Spirit which is for your personal edification as opposed to the Gift of Tongues listed among the 9 Gifts of the Spirit which is manifested for the building up of the body of Christ. Another important distinction is that The Gift of Tongues MUST be accompanied by the Gift of Interpretation so that the message in tongues is understood and the hearers edified. Whereas tongues as a prayer language is a speaking of secrets unto God and understood by no man. Which brings me to the third distinction. The direction of the Conmunication in the Gift of Tongues which must be accompanied by interpretation is downward, God Communicating with Man. Whereas the direction of the communication of our prayer language is upward, us speaking secrets unto God. Our prayer language is also available for us to utilise 24/7 . Paul said, 'I speak in tongues more than you all' 'Pray with the Spirit and pray with your understanding at all times' Whereas the Gift of Tongues is only available to us as the Spirit gives us utterance ie when God wants to bring a message to His people. These distinctions are important ones to understand I feel since these are two distinct operations of the Holy Spirit and the Confusion comes from believing they are one and the same manifestation. They are not !

Being a former skeptic about the gift of tongues myself I think I should be qualified to mention my thoughts on the matter. I used to believe in the same thing that this man is now talking about but have come to realise what a deception it is. I'd have to provide scriptures about tongues but for the moment I'll just briefly mention that it talks about tongues in several passages about it being an unknown tongue that isn't spoken to man but to God. Why would it be described that way if indeed tongues was an actual phonetic language? Paul the apostle must be had some criteria for believing that people either had or hadn't received the spirit of God and that sign must have been a physical manifestation of the spirit such as the gift of tongues. I don't see how he could have known otherwise, unless there was a sign. Furthermore, I have had experiences with tongues and confirmation from the Lord that it is real and from the spirit, our flesh however, being at war with the spirit wants to negate the reality of tongues and so to does the devil. That's why we are so eager to disbelieve in tongues. It's foreign to our flesh and we don't understand it, that's why we feel so awkward even talking about tongues. But regardless of all this, people still speak in tongues today including my self, they pray in the holy ghost and they get baptised and receive this gift from the spirit for confirmation of their indwelling of the spirit of God. I believe what we witness today about people's skepticism regarding tongues is nothing more than simply a deception which prevents us from entering the spiritual aspect of the faith and keeps people tightly locked in their flesh without any spirit. I say this because I too once believed this stuff and I can say confidently that I was dead wrong about tongues and that it is indeed from God. amen.

Flakes: people's skepticism regarding tongues is due, many times, to people's need to stay close to the truth of God. There are two phenomenas that can be regarded as "speaking in tongues": xenoglossy and glossolalia. Xenoglossy = spontaneously speaking in real languages without knowing them / Glossolalia = generating unidentifiable noises as a result of extasy. We see the first one in the Bible bringing glory to God as a sign to Jewish people that God's redemption was for other nations too (a reunification as opposed to what happened at Babel). There's no reference to the fact that Paul had or needed to have signs, by the way. Glossolalia, on the other hand... Has no evidence in the Bible except for a hyperbole. It's very common, though, among other religions, shamanism and occultism. So I sincerely recommend, from the love that Christ showed me, that you examine VERY carefully what you're dealing with. Whoever you are, I care about you. There are many things that can be said, but I don't even know if you're reading this. I just encourage you to study the Bible in depth, and don't rely on your experiences. There is experience that comes with it, sure, but it flows out of the Word of God, with our Lord as foundation. If not, there can only be confusion. There are many experiences out there that claim to be godly. Experience does not come first, and does not replace the Word, and if you think experience is more important than what is written, then... Well, hinduists, and atheists, and new age gurus all agree. I also recommend Fernand Legrand's book "I speak in tongues more than you all". He actually believed in tongues for years and then realized he was wrong, so he might have something to say about it. Love you brother, take care. May the Spirit of God guide you. (sorry, I don't really speak English)

I spent several years in a charismatic church and watched this nonsense first hand. The scripture is our guide to what is of God and what is not. So ask yourself this, what purpose does it serve for someone to speak nonsense in front of a bunch of people, and nobody understands it, not even the person who spoke it? The phrase "unknown tongue" is not referring to the gibberish we hear in charismatic churches today. It is also not exclusionary of phonetic languages. What if you were to suddenly start speaking in ancient Sumerian, but you didn't know that's what it was, nor was there anyone around who did? To everyone in the room, that's an unknown language. Yet, you're speaking real words that have specific meaning. Also, of great import here is that you're quoting from the KJV. The word "unknown" is added to the text. It does not actually appear in the original Greek. The KJV is also the only translation in which the word "unknown" is used. Other translations that add to the text use the word "another". This is an example of the handful of errors in the KJV, which is a thought-for-thought translation, and an example of why word-for-word translations like the ESV and NASB tend to be better for sorting out these difficult doctrinal issues. In the broader context of 1 Corinthians 14, if you continue reading beyond verse 2, Paul goes back and forth between using the singular and plural of "tongue". He calls specific attention to the known languages of the world in verse 10. Furthermore, he continues and explains that if you're speaking in front of the congregation in a language that nobody understands, what benefit is that to anyone? For the rest of the chapter, Paul is hammering this point home until he finally makes clear his point in verses 22-25. God does not do anything without purpose. The scripture makes this clear. So I ask you, what purpose is served by a gift of the Holy Spirit which allows you to speak in a language that noone, not even you, understands? This is a complete misunderstanding of the text resulting in a false teaching.

I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.” ‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭14:14-15‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ I think we should not be quick to call everything we do not understand as ‘false teaching’.

He was referring to speaking in tongues in a gathering like church service in 2 Corinthians14: 26-28. So that there will be good order in worship. In verse 18 he says 'I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you', and in verse 39 he commanded...'Therefore, my brothers and sisters, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues'. I Corinthians14:14, reveals the purpose speaking in tongues....'For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful'. The mind is unfruitful because it doesn't understand but the Spirit do understand what is being spoken or communicated. Verse 2.. 'For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God. Indeed, no one understands them; they utter mysteries by the Spirit. The purpose of church gathering is for the edification of the church, so speaking in tongues without an interpreter will not achieve this purpose.

@@brucemurray121 Check these few paragraphs out. I am of the belief Tongues werent meant to last longer than the founding of the CHURCH. The Gift of Tongues was a divinely bestowed supernatural ability to speak in a human language that had not been learned by the one speaking. According to the Apostle Paul, when believers exercised the gift of tongues in church, they were to speak one at a time, and only two or three were to speak in a given service (1 Cor. 14:27). Furthermore, when tongues were spoken in the church, they were to be interpreted by someone with the gift of interpretation so that the others might be edified by the God-given message (1 Cor. 14:5, 13, 27). In this way, tongues did not serve as a private prayer language, but rather-like all spiritual gifts-as a means by which one might serve and edify the body of Christ (1 Cor. 12:7; 1 Pet. 4:10). Tongues “Will Cease” In 1 Corinthians 13:8 Paul made an interesting, almost startling, statement: “Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.” In the expression “love never fails,” the Greek word translated “fails” means “to decay” or “to be abolished.” Paul was not saying that love is invincible or that it cannot be rejected. He was saying that love is eternal-that it will be applicable forever and will never be passé. Tongues, however, “will cease.” The Greek verb used in 1 Corinthians 13:8 means “to cease permanently,” and implies that when tongues ceased, they would never start up again. Here is the question that this passage poses for the contemporary charismatic movement: if tongues were supposed to cease, has that already happened, or is it yet future? Charismatic believers insist that none of the gifts have ceased yet, so the cessation of tongues is yet future. Most non-charismatics insist that tongues have already ceased, passing away with the apostolic age. Who is right? It should be noted that 1 Corinthians 13:8 itself does not say when tongues were to cease. Although 1 Corinthians 13:9-10 teaches that prophecy and knowledge will cease when the “perfect” (i.e., the eternal state) comes, the language of the passage-particularly the middle voice of the Greek verb translated “will cease”-puts tongues in a category apart from these gifts. Paul writes that while prophecy and knowledge will be “done away” (passive voice) by “the perfect,” the gift of tongues “will cease” in and of itself (middle voice) prior to the time that “the perfect” arrives. When did this cessation of tongues take place? The evidence of Scripture and history indicate that tongues ceased in the apostolic age. Evidence from Scripture What biblical or theological evidence is there that tongues have ceased? First, the gift of tongues was a miraculous, revelatory gift, and the age of miracles and revelation ended with the apostles. The last recorded miracles in the New Testament occurred around A.D. 58, with the healings on the island of Malta (Acts 28:7-10). From A.D. 58 to 96, when John finished the book of Revelation, no miracle is recorded. Miracle gifts like tongues and healing are mentioned only in 1 Corinthians, an early epistle. Two later epistles, Ephesians and Romans, both discuss gifts of the Spirit at length-but no mention is made of the miraculous gifts. By that time miracles were already looked on as something in the past (Heb. 2:3-4). Apostolic authority and the apostolic message needed no further confirmation. Before the first century ended, the entire New Testament had been written and was circulating through the churches. Charismatic believers insist that none of the gifts have ceased… non-charismatics insist that tongues have already ceased.… Who is right? The revelatory gifts had ceased to serve any purpose. And when the apostolic age ended with the death of the Apostle John, the signs that identified the apostles had already become moot (cf. 2 Cor. 12:12). Second, tongues were intended as a sign to unbelieving Israel (1 Cor. 14:21-22; cf. Is. 28:11-12). They signified that God had begun a new work that encompassed the Gentiles. The Lord would now speak to all nations in all languages. The barriers were down. And so the gift of languages symbolized not only the curse of God on a disobedient nation, but also the blessing of God on the whole world. Tongues were therefore a sign of transition between the Old and New Covenants. With the establishment of the church, a new day had dawned for the people of God. God would speak in all languages. But once the period of transition was past, the sign was no longer necessary. Third, the gift of tongues was inferior to other gifts. It was given primarily as a sign (1 Cor. 14:22) and was also easily misused to edify self (1 Cor. 14:4). The church meets for the edification of the body, not self-gratification or personal experience-seeking. Therefore, tongues had limited usefulness in the church, and so it was never intended to be a permanent gift. The Evidence from History The evidence of history also indicates that tongues have ceased. It is significant that tongues are mentioned only in the earliest books of the New Testament. Paul wrote at least twelve epistles after 1 Corinthians and never mentioned tongues again. Peter never mentioned tongues; James never mentioned tongues; John never mentioned tongues; neither did Jude. Tongues appeared only briefly in Acts and 1 Corinthians as the new message of the gospel was being spread. But once the church was established, tongues were gone. They stopped. The later books of the New Testament do not mention tongues again, and neither did anyone in the post-apostolic age. Chrysostom and Augustine-the greatest theologians of the eastern and western churches-considered tongues obsolete. Writing in the fourth century, Chrysostom stated categorically that tongues had ceased by his time and described the gift as an obscure practice. Augustine referred to tongues as a sign that was adapted to the apostolic age. In fact, during the first five hundred years of the church, the only people who claimed to have spoken in tongues were followers of Montanus, who was branded as a heretic. The next time any significant tongues-speaking movement arose within Christianity was in the late seventeenth century. A group of militant Protestants in the Cevennes region of southern France began to prophecy, experience visions, and speak in tongues. The group, sometimes called the Cevennol prophets, is remembered for its political and military activities, not its spiritual legacy. Most of their prophecies went unfulfilled. They were rabidly anti-Roman Catholic, and advocated the use of armed force against the Roman Catholic church. Many of them were consequently persecuted and killed by Rome.

One of the errors of cessationists including our dear Paul Washer is they use illogical arguments to disprove the gift of tongues. Going by what Paul Washer said about 1 Cor 14, if a preacher is in a gathering of Russian people, why will the Holy Spirit give you the utterance of another language but french?? It makes no sense. If it was just a known language, why will the Bible say there should be an interpreter since he would be talking to them in their own language?? Reading 1 Cor 14 in it's entirety, it makes no sense whatsoever if Paul was talking about a known or foreign language here like for instance, why would an unbeliever come in and think a church speaking in French is mad???. You can also see how he just disproved what Paul said in 1 Cor 13 about tongues of Angel's by saying he was exaggerating there, going by his logic, I could also say "if I have a big house, I'll invite you in" and we know that's not exaggeration and Paul could've also meant that in the passage. If it was just an ordinary language, why would the Bible also say that it's a mysterious language(1Cor 14:2) that "only" God understands??. I believe there are two types of tongues. 1. The known or foreign tongues like the one in Acts where it's understood by people, I believe this one should be for preaching to other people especially foreign people and 2. The Heavenly/Angelic tongues, I believe this one is for your personal prayer, I think it's this one Paul was saying there should be an interpreter for if incase it be spoken in church where unbelievers are but if there is no interpreter, it shouldn't be spoken in church. Even though it's often faked, it doesn't affect the real thing and this is why people like Paul Washer do not want to believe it is real and also because it sounds unintelligible to the human mind because it isn't meant for them but for God. I believe when Paul said he spoke in tongues more than the people in 1Cor 14:18‐19, he was talking about prayer, he spoke more in tongues in his personal prayer than the others. At the end of the day, what I see is the problem is a person telling other people what they are doing is fake even though he himself hasnt experienced for himsel. If you haven't experienced the gift of tongues, how can you tell another person who has it is fake??

My husband knows somebody personally that has experienced speaking in tongues which somebody else heard and it happen to be his own foreign language and he said that the man speaking in tongues was glorifying God. Tongues still happen today. The Holy Spirt has not ceased therefor the gifts have not ceased either. There are many known incidences that this has happened. 1 Cor 14 talks about speaking in tongues, but also praying in tongues to edify one self. Paul said he spoke in tongues more than the others, but would rather not do that in church, but privately between himself and God. He said it edifies a person. The mind is unfruitful, but the spirit gets edified. This is different from speaking out in tongues in a congregation this is for personal prayer edification. I experience that for myself. I was prayed for to receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit. I did not experience the praying in tongues then, but weeks later when I was in bed. I was praying and all of a sudden my hands raised up and I felt a power enter me and I started to pray out in tongues. Somebody tell me what that was then. I pray in tongues a lot for self edification as described in 1 Cor 14. And I tell you , it often lifts my spirits. Now if this is false then I pray for God to remove from me whatever I received that evening in bed. I do not believe in the hyper charismatic stuff. I am dead set against people like Bill Johnson, Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland, Todd White and the like, but this part of my walk with the Lord is real. What is praying in the spirit then? It says to pray in the spirit and in the understanding also and sing praises in the spirit and in the understanding also.

Well, the "Gift" of tongues is the ability to address the congregation in a different language. If there's no interpretation, it doesn't say they should stop speaking in tongues or that their tongue is fake, but rather are told to keep it between them and God. In other words, they authentically speak in tongues but do not possess the "gift" of addressing others in tongues. I don't think its correct to expect every Christian to end up speaking in tongues, but i dont think its unreasonable to hope for it, as most outpourings of the Spirit in Acts were accompanied by the crowds speaking in tongues. Paul W has great passion and insight on some topics. On this topic I think he walks by sight not faith or more so by Baptist doctrine. He hasn’t or won’t allow himself to experience it so it’s not right. He starts with “give me a hard question ha ha”. No it is not hard it’s very easy scripturally if one is not conditioned against it. In brief, is God the same yesterday today forever more? Yes. Is God a respecter of persons? No. Thus what was available to Jesus, Paul, Peter etc is available to us, we are meant to imitate Jesus. Does the bible record Jesus speaking in tongues? No. Did He. I believe if He walked in the fullness of God and in Him dwelled all the fullness of the God head bodily and thus with complete fullness of Holy Spirit, then why would He not have spoken in tongues, a gift of God. He was always drawing aside to pray etc. Yes tongues can be an unknown foreign language to minister the Gospel. But Paul also says that he speaks in tongues more than any of you (I Corinth 14), when admonishing the Corinthians to be orderly. He didn’t say you are not speaking in tongues of the Holy Spirit so be quiet! Also why in a Corinthian meeting would they all need to be speaking out in various languages in Corinth? etc. Paul was fluent in multiple languages so when he preached, he could (at least usually / most of the time at worst, all the time more likely) speak to his recipients in their language. So he therefore had no need to speak in an unknown tongue that the locals could understand his message. Thus his speaking in tongues more than anyone was regarding personal edification and exaltation of God and was not about ministering the gospel to others. Thus the origin of the language is irrelevant whether earthly or spiritual as it is his Spirit edifying God and building Paul up as Holy Spirit gives him the utterance. Thus because Paul Washer has or won’t allow himself to receive this gift, Holy Spirit won’t force him. One must still speak but Holy Spirit is the source of the language. If Paul W gets a birthday present and doesn’t want to receive it and open it, then does that mean the person who gave it to him did not give him the gift? Absolutely not. Any form of cessationist theory is false. As stated, God is the same yesterday, today, forevermore. Does some parts of the church misuse anything to do with God? All churches do in some way, not just charismatics. Read your Word and ask YOUR Teacher, Holy Spirit whom God sent to teach you. Get over religion and get intimate. Stop running to “super” Christians for leading. Follow Jesus. He will then confirm what He is teaching you by telling you which men to listen to. Have a good day.

The only difference i have with him is experiential, not doctrinal. I HAVE seen that in places, whereas he has not, which is fine. Super quick example for those who care.. A friend of mine was open-air preaching in NYC a few years ago. She paused for a moment then began speaking a different language into the microphone for about 5 minutes. The crowd was confused. After the 5 minutes, she continued in english. About 10 minutes later, 2 women came running up to her with tears in their eyes. The younger one explained they heard the preaching from the statue of liberty. She asked where the person preaching in French was. My friend told her it was her, but she was unaware what language she was speaking. The young woman said "My mother and i are French but she doesn't speak English. I am a Christiam. She is not. She heard you speak in French over the loudspeaker, calling her by name and preaching the gospel to her." The mother communicated through her daughter that she wanted to be saved and was that very moment. That's one of at least a dozen i know of first hand. Just thought a story would encourage someone. :-)

I grew up in a staunchly cessasionist setting, and I adhered to that strongly until I was converted at the age of 25; I received the Spirit of adoption while in a forest, alone, and when I did, I came up off of that bridge I was laying on speaking/praying in another tongue. For the past 26 years I have prayed in tongues, and it IS authentic, and I need no man to validate that or affirm it for me as I have seen the fruit of it over the years in my own life and many of my brothers and sisters. Have I ever spoken out in another tongue in a congregational setting? No, I have not. Do I blurt out in my prayer language in a congregational setting? No. Do I understand this completely in my mind? No, and I'm grateful for that. This prayer language that I was given at my conversion has been such a blessing over the years, and it keeps my spirit man lubricated if you will, primed and ready to commune with a Holy God. I will say that I have also operated in the other gifts over the years, and I have been the recipient of them from other members of the body I am a part of, and they have proven true and accurate. Words of knowledge and wisdom, etc. Are they the main thing? No, Christ is, but I'm grateful that they are tools that the Holy Spirit has given us for the edification of the body. Let's not let the extremes and abuses cause us to miss the actual authentic gifts that they are. This is the word of the enemy to keep us weak and divided. God bless and Happy Christmas.

This topic has been one of the most damaging in the modern era. I am one who has grown up experiencing many denominations (baptist, full gospel, AFM, Methodist etc), and various kinds of tongues (languages) were always spoken, with interpretations. Sometimes evangelical ministers will be preaching let's say in a rural African church with an interpreter (As I've experienced), and then pray in tongues, only for the interpreter to stand back because the preacher was unknowingly (by the Holy Spirit) praying in that Native language. Then I've experienced being woken up by the Holy Spirit, compelled to pray, but not knowing what - opening my mouth and the Spirit gives utterance, words flow in a foreign tongue (what some might scoff at, calling it gibberish), but if you listen carefully you can hear words, sentences, punctuated even (this reminds me that when hearing Arabic sometimes, or some other distant language, those might sound like gibberish too). [I heard the comedian Trevor Noah pretend to speak Chinese in one of his sets - it sounded so convincing, yet Chinese speakers said he was just talking gibberish - but they said it was also the best 'pretend Chinese they'd ever heard'.] Anyway; I've been taught, and believe that there are 4 types of tongues... 1) Praying in tongues to God (1 Cor 14:2-4, Acts 2:4), 2.)Praying in tongues over/for people (Acts 19:6, 1 Cor 14:22), 3.)Speaking in a foreign/earthly language for an individual's edification (tho the church gets edified as well) or 4) Speaking in a foreign/heavenly language and the receiving divine interpretation for the building up of a church/body of believers (1 Cor 13:1, 1 Cor 14:5) --- also see 1 Cor 14:26-28 and Mark 16:17 . . . All this being said, I think Derek Prince's teaching is quite comprehensive. What complicates it is that you *do* get people speaking actual gibberish/nonsense, and then you get those and other religions who have incantations and satanic chants which are basically demonic tongues. This is why you need the baptism of the Holy Spirit, acknowledging Jesus as Lord of all, to discern. 1 John 4:1-21, 2 Cor 11:14, Isa 8:19, Matt 24:24, 1 Thess 5:21 etc. Interestingly though, most times I find 'resistance' to this gift comes in the form of "I don't think this gifting is for me" - which is another point of doctrinal debate, as this thinking has also hindered believers (1 Cor 14:1)

Another interesting account I heard was, a minister was asked by a professor to pray for him that he may receive the gift of tongues. So he did. A few days later the professor caught up with him in jubilant mood saying he received the gift... he then proceeded to proclaim the words "Abi dabbi, Abi Dabbi, Abi Dabbi" - the minister nodded, but was not convinced at all, thinking this was even a mockery. Later the minister was invited to speak at a campus meeting , after which during the testimony session, this professor volunteered to share. The minister, still unconvinced and embarrassed, slipped out, as the professor took to the stage undoubtedly about to ramble on with "Abi Dabbi". Shortly thereafter, 2 Jnr professors caught up with the minister and asked for him to pray for them as well, encouraged by the professor's testimony earlier. The minister was taken aback... Their reasoning was "If that man, one of the most intelligent men on campus, was willing to get up on a stage - proclaim the work of Jesus, shouting 'Abi Dabbi Abi Dabbi' - and risk making a complete fool of himself in the process, then they wanted that as well." The minister later repented his limited ways of thinking and how God can operate, reminded of 1 Cor 1:27 "God chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise."

The whole idea of it being to build up self or as a private prayer language is presented as a problem. Scripture says it's an unknown language only God could understand. Jesus said we must become like little children to enter the Kingdom of heaven is it not a fact that a child speaks with crying To ask their mother for something.. Most incidents when speaking in tongues is in the book of acts not short after is laying on of hands.. which could actually be just a hug to comfort the person weeping..

This is a very touchy topic of scriptures. I can't tell you guys how often a debate gets rattled because of this... Paul is absolutely right. The word of God even shows evident of the way tongue is used. It's only to edify your spirit when you're one on one with God. Whenever a person speaks in "tongue" but there's no interpreter, then what is that person even saying amen to? I'm sorry, but Paul was right... I, too, have yet too see the real language of tongue in this generation. In the book of acts, during their first time being given the power of tongue through the Holy Spirit, EVERY person understood them even though they were from different parts and spoke different languages. That's like having someone speak in the Holy Spirit, but there's a crowd of Chinese, spanish, german and french people, yet, they all understand that person as if it was their own. THATS the real tongue. Everything else... It's vain babble. I have testimonies about it. Believe me. Satan comes masquerading as am angel of light. If anyone's church tries speaking "tongues" but there are not at least 2 interpreters...pray for them. It's not from God.

The girl asking the question also needs to understand that chapters 12 and 13 precede what Paul W. explained at the last. I say that because 12 talks about gifts, 13 is the love chapter, and in 14 the apostle goes back to the gifts. Seems odd that the apostle would talk about gifts, then a wedding, and back to gifts. That's because he's not. Chapter 13 mentions gifts that will cease...tongues is one of those gifts. I too agree with Paul W. that Acts 2 is THE Biblical example of tongues and that the apostle Paul is using hyperbole in chapter 14. He also says that wished that they all spoke in tongues and that he did so more that they all did. This makes sense when we realize that Paul was a missionary to many people groups that spoke many different languages. Paul W. does an excellent job of explaining Biblical truth.

I believe this issue is made bigger than what it is... The Bible says that it is better for us to ask for gifts of prophecy than to speak tongues, prophecy helps the church, tongues only edifices yourself, so which is greater? I want the greater gift if it would be God's will... both if that be his will, if those gifts for me ate not his will then there will be a different gift, maybe teaching the word of God is all I'm here for... all I know is I trust God's will and whatever he Will's will happen, I just pray I am part of it... also the Bible says to not speak in tongues in the church if there is no interpreter and I see it many churches everyone wants to yell out in tongues and edify their own soul, yet for the visitors, the new people, how must they feel when they don't understand a thing about it, the Bible says to not speak tongues unless there is an interpreter so please if there is no interpreter then just hold your tongue, because it helps no one but yourself in fact it may cause the babies in christ to run away from your church... I personally do not speak in tongues I've asked for it just like for the gift of prophecy, but have not been granted that gift by God as of yet

@@AdventureSMBW This was his latest response: You insist that tongues are a human language that had not been learned by the speaker because of your misreading of Acts 2:5-12, just like what most Christians do. I used to believe that too until I stopped reading that passage without the wrong assumptions of what tongues are. I tried to explain to you how those passages are actually not saying what people generally think they are saying but it just flew over your head. So I am trying to show that if you apply your definition of tongues to what paul says in corinthians, then what Paul wrote would not make any sense. For example,1 Corinthians 14:2, "For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit. " You completely ignore this and claim tongues are for communicating with men of foreign language, the exact opposite of what paul is saying. You believe what you believe based on your misunderstanding of Acts 2. In acts 2, the disciples did not preach in tongues to foreigners, instead the foreigners only supernaturally heard prayers in tongues, in their own languages. The apostles were praying in tongues praising God. They only started preaching in normal human language after they had stopped praying in tongues but they never preached or communicated with anyone in tongues. If you read the bible without assumptions you will see that tongues are not human languages. I know all the verses that you have sent or that you can send. I am not boasting but I am just trying to tell you that everything you believe about tongues I once believed but it was based on misreading the bible and just taking for granted that the general consensus on the topic must have been correct, but I now see it doesn't even make any logical sense

I speak in tongues. This pastor, has not been taught about tongues. There are 3 tongues. One to deliver messages to the body, which requires someone interpret. One in our private prayer life. One for brothers and sisters in the Lord to communicate when they speak different languages. I would encourage the body of Christ to go to a full gospel church or talk with a pentecostal preacher to see the gifts in operation and be taught. This is not a difficult subject to talk about for those of us who are baptized in the Holy Spirit and are filled with the Spirit. It is, like every other doctrine, difficult for those who don't believe the Holy Spirit is the same as JESUS in that HE does not change. We believers are a part of the church that has existed since the first church. We can continue to be filled with the power of the HOLY SPIRIT, being filled daily and seeing the gifts operating in our congregations today.

Paul said, “do all speak in tongues” implying some do, then goes on to say don’t do it in public worship lest there be an interpreter, or some visitors will think you’ve gone crazy. So yes in today’s church it is a gift, one of many, the craziness we see in Charismatic churches today is hardly biblical, we need discernment

He does not say "don't do it in public worship." He says "keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and God." When Paul speaks of silence in church like this, hes typically referring to openly addressing the church, not opening your mouth at all. When he tells women to remain silent, he does not mean they can't pray and sing in the building. He means addressing the crowd. I would argue that people speaking in tongues to God during worship is not disobeying this exhortation. I think the disorder comes when said tongue-speaker attempts to address other people. Just my thoughts!

His comparison between himself (a self-labeled "a practical cessationist") and a cessationist should be compared to an agnostic vs an atheist. (1) Washer talks about people "grounded in the Word" without experience. He is wrong. You cannot be truly "grounded in the Word" without having experience; because if you were truly "grounded in the Word", you couldn't help yourself but have experience with God. God promises experience with Him, if you diligently seek Him. How can you be "grounded in the Word" without diligently seeking Him? So, if you lack experience with God or if you lack a desire to be grow to be grounded in His Word, you aren't where you think you are. Both are required for a healthy walk with God. (2) Washer claims: "In every case (in his study of Scripture) when tongues is being spoken, it is a real phonetic language" (with the clearly expressed connotation that it is a human language). Again, Washer is wrong. Washer misses the whole point of 1 Cor 14. The Apostle Paul says this: "For he that speaks in a [unknown] tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God: for no man understands [him]; howbeit in the spirit he speaks mysteries....He that speaks in an [unknown] tongue edifies himself....I would that you all spoke with tongues, but rather than you prophesied: for greater is he that prophesies than he that speaks with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. Now brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine? So likewise you, except you utter by the tongue words easy to be understood, how shall it be known what is spoken?....Wherefore let him that speaks in an [unknown] tongue pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful." The Apostle goes on from there to say: "I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than you all: Yet, in the church, I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice, I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an [unknown] tongue." (select tongue-focused verses--just to leave out the prophesy and voice comparisons--from 1 Cor 14) So, if the Apostle Paul is always speaking a "real phonetic language" (from a human perspective), that whole discussion would make no sense. However, Paul is not talking about speaking a tongue that his hearers understand, otherwise, why would he have to interpret it. Also, Paul is not speaking a language that he understands (apart from praying for and receiving the interpretation), because otherwise, he would have understanding of what he is saying and would not need interpretation. Yet, Paul talks about praying that kind of tongues more than anyone; yet that when he speaks in a church, he would rather speak words that he understands, so he might teach others. Scripturally, it seems pretty clear that the Apostle Paul is speaking about something very different than what Washer is talking about. (3) We have this weird idea that must come from cessationists that "the gifts of healing" means everyone has to be healed. That isn't Scripturally true. If it was, the Apostle Paul didn't have that gift, because he had people with him that were sick and not healed. I don't know anyone who would believe that.

Paul said he wished everyone would speak in tongues. He also describes this tongues as praying in the spirit, to God not men, for the edification of self as opposed to prophecy which edifies others. I'm also reminded that God confounds the wise with the foolishness of the Gospel. There is a certain humility in praying to God privately, in tongues out of ones spirit, without understanding of the mind, although God can give understanding of what one has prayed in the spirit. I think the biggest rejection of this experience with the Lord is the excess, soulish or demonic counterfeits within the church, the obvious demonic counterfeit within the occult and the unwillingness for most in the charismatic movement to ever challenge anything "spiritual" as not of God. However, throwing the gifts of God out due to excess, or Satan's counterfeit is to miss out on what God offers his children. I find this form of tongues mentioned in the bible, a personal prayer language, to be a great help when the heart is motivated to pray or sing to the Lord, but the mind can not come up with the words to express the inner desire.

This is a difficult question. As an ex-Pentecostal myself I still find myself speaking in tongues during prayer. I guess the major difference for me is that I don't purposely do it anymore. I would rather pray in English (or in French) until I feel in my spirit the urge to speak in a tongue. There have been times in my life when I spoke in tongues with a clear interpretation from the Lord in English and in French. I could even speak in tongues which resemble pretty much a phonetic language yet unknown to me. I have attended a particular church in my home country where 2 or 3 people would, in turn, speak in tongues during the service with interpretation given by themselves or a third person. When my wife Lilian received her healing from a deadly heart disease, was I praying in english? Nooooo. I was praying in tongues through and through. For me the key statement from Paul himself is "So, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues". What a beautiful advice!

I don’t believe God speaks to people audibly. He speaks through His word mostly. Doesn’t mean He can’t speak through a verse that you see somewhere or through situations because He can! However be careful. Because you can easily fall into the trap of thinking that if you don’t hear Him audibly something wrong. I don’t hear Him audibly but He definitely has answered my prayers through situations, circumstances. I know He’s speaking to me when for example something is bothering me or I feel down and somehow a verse that applies to how I feel pops up somewhere or I just read it straight from His word.

Act 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. Act 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. Act 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Act 10:47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? it is a good bet that Cornelius and Peter could have a normal conversation as they spoke with each other in the common language of Koine Greek, from the context they spoke to each other and understood each other, So what were the tongues that Cornelius and his household were speaking that Peter recognized as the gift of tongues? it had to be different from their language they were using to converse with one another for Peter to recognize they were speaking in tongues. the context is very much is suggesting that the "tongues they spoke" were not their normal conversant language.

I didn't listen to very much of what Washer had to say, but based on the comments about what he said, it was nothing new that non-Pentecostals haven't said before. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit and tongues is Scriptural but people who don't want to believe it is, look for ways to dismiss it or to say it ceased with the Apostolic Age. The Pentecostal movement that began in the early part of the 20th century as a result of an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, gave rise to a number of new denominations which had as their doctrinal distinctive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in other tongues. Today, there are millions who have experienced the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. They experienced what those 120 deciples in the upper room on the Day of Pentecost experienced. When Peter preached to Cornelius and his household and the Holy Spirit fell upon them, Peter and those with him recognized that these Gentiles were experiencing what they themselves had experienced in that upper room on the Day of Pentecost. Acts 10:45-46 KJV "And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God." So my point is, the experience of being filled with the Holy Spirit is Scriptural and for believers today. The fact that there are abuses, and people and preachers who misrepresent Pentecostalism by their ungodly teachings and actions does not negate the scriptural and experiential truth of this doctrine.

And no consequences. Never healing some life long crippled person. Never walking into a cancer ward and healing all those who are sick. It is a mockery of God. And those who do it will have to answer.

If In the Bible they needed a interpreter for the tongues and that was an actual gift of the spirit-( gift of the interprets of tongues is an actual gift in 2 Corinthians-I believe)-than it can’t always be a regular language. There are 4 types of tongues. I have seen others say they have spoken in actual languages, and there is the kind that edifies the spirit we dont Understand , and then there is the kind that needs the gift of interpretation and pa talks about that we should Sto the service to interpret it. The Bible is literal. We should not not take it litterally. We need to look at ALL the scriptures about tongues and keep the Bible in context. There are different kinds of tongues. The 4 kind of tongue is our regular language and or prophesy. BUT....I DO also THINK IF WE HAVE THE HOLY SPIRIT THERE SHOULD BE THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT, THE POWER TO PREACH THE GOSPEL, and understanding of His word, and conviction of sin-NOT JUST A TONGUE.

When I would go they had interpretation but the supposed tongues would only last less then a minute and the interpretation would last several minutes? As if in a heavenly language a couple words make a whole speech in our language? And sometimes the interpreter would mess up and try and fix what he was saying. If it was truly the Spirit helping him to interpret I don’t see how he could mess up???? But again I’m just a human with limited knowledge and only trust in Christ for my salvation

we have the Pauline epistles governing the church and its practices, how, what, when, where, these things are relevant today, I believe the whole bible ids still relevant today, and no we are no longer under the law, but those things are still part of our canon and history so that we can have their background into understanding the New Testament. they are shadows of things to come. I must admit I am on the fence about the gifts of the Spirit, I know that God heals because He has healed me on many occasions. I firmly believe that if tongues are for today then so are the other 8 gifts, so why is it that we only see and hear tongues and occasionally interpretation of tongues? where are the healings, where are the raising of the dead, where is the prophesying that reveals the heart of an unbeliever so that he falls down and says God is in you of a truth? if tongues are in operation then the other 8 gifts must also be in operation as well 1Co 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 1Co 12:5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. 1Co 12:6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. 1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 1Co 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 1Co 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 1Co 12:10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 1Co 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. there are 9 gifts listed and to the best of my memory which is not as good as I would like I have only seen tongues and on rare occasions interpretation of tongues, the only healing I have seen is what I have experienced in my personal life. 1Co 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. 1Co 13:9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. 1Co 13:10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. I am of the belief that that which is perfect is come, was the completed word of God when the New Testament had been gathered and added to the Old Testament giving us the completed Word of God that is sufficient for all matters of faith and doctrine. with the completed word of God, there was no more need for prophets to prophesy God's will, knowledge, or revelation as all of those things are now contained in the completed word of God. also, I have seen that tongues are not governed by what Paul said, 1Co 14:26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. 1Co 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. 1Co 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. that is not followed, as I know someone who speaks in tongues like it is a normal thing, yet there is no interpretation, no edifying, and no keeping silent, itis like the tongues are there just for added emphasis on what he is preaching. we sure could use the prophesying today so that if an unbeliever is in our midst and the thoughts of his heart are revealed that would indicate to him God is in us of a truth. I am going to tread very lightly here, as Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost is unforgivable, I do not care what doctrine anyone holds that says otherwise, I am still going to be careful about what and how I say stuff concerning this matter lest I blaspheme.

I have noticed that there are two extremes found in christians who are causing all the problems with this speaking in tongues issue. First extreme are those ones who claim that you MUST speak in tongues and if you dont you dont have the Holy Spirit and are not born again. The second extreme is the opposite, they claim that anybody who babble in unknown tongues is manifesting kundalini spirit and being demonized. The truth is in the middle, yes there are christians who speak in tongues but that alone means nothing yet since there are so many charlatans and prosperity gospel preachers who speak in tongues as well, so you have to show the fundamental sign as well, that you have the Holy Spirit and that is a changed behavior, being sanctified from worldly sinful lifestyle.

I love Paul Washer but this is a convenient way to avoid the practice of tongues in weekly church settings and private experience, as Paul teaches and Acts shows us. I highly recommend The Language of Heaven by Sam Storms. 250 pages of solid Biblical evidence for the continuation of the gift of tongues, private and public, as the Scriptures teach.

All that we need know about tongues is in Scripture. Anything more is not biblical. You people are not speaking an angelic language. Stop lying! What you are doing is the practice of eisegesis (to lead into) which is subjecting Scripture to your own preconceived thoughts and prejudices. You take passages out of context and inject your own meaning into Scripture. What you ought to be doing is the practice of exegesis (to lead out of) to extract the true meaning of Scripture. The spiritual gifts are not for your personal use. You may believe you are speaking in heavenly tongues but it's really just a manifestation of your flesh. Satan is happy to help you engage in such activities and may even be speaking through you. If there is no interpretation of tongues then it is not Biblical. You people are driving new converts away from the church. You are not characters in the Bible. There were 12 Apostles, you are not one of them!

@@jeffs797 I strongly suggest The Language of Heaven by Sam Storms for an exegetical defense of the gift of tongues

I really liked Paul Washers preaching but what he said is false “For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭14:2‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It's sad to see Washer try to go above his level of revelation.Like a blind man describing a sunset.

And who are you to say such things? Genuine question. Do you set the "levels"? Have you been revealed other individuals' "levels of revelation"?....or do you just like to type stuff on KZread?
