I use Ti spokes on my bmx bike. Both my rims are a Malice Alienation rim, one being a mini profile front hub and a Kink Yukon Cassette. I use Titanium because I can afford it. I found them fantastic. I'm going to use them on a back up bike on a Merritt battle rim. Try them out people if you can.

It's funny how silly light your wheels are and I think my next weenie wheels will be lighter with tubes and tires if I go full weenie. My cassette is lighter than a mini while able to handle pegs. And my coaster is about the same weight as a full ti mini with female bolts. Yet it'll be a male set up. Tree rear hub for cassette. Custom ti axle ti 14mm bolts. Aluminium 7075 or ti driver. Free night coaster. Same treatment. But male axle. Far east cycles front hub with ti internals. Eclat carbonic rims for my heavier options. Alloy nipples. Was originally going to be ti spokes or fancy butted spokes like cx rays. Now berd most likely. Although ti have come down in price again. Going on a bike with more ti and carbon then chromo. Ti frame fork bars and cranks. Alloy spindle bolts. Spline drive sprocket. Carbon pivotal post. Pedals are magnesium.

If you don't try to lace the wheels yourself, you should be fine. BB installation can be tricky, if you don't have a tool, but it works. I bought a complete bike, which i am upgrading now, so here's what i learned: Check for the right spacer with when buying a BB. For 48 spline cranks, you need a crank puller tool that fits your model. Hubguards need to fit your hub model. Hope that helps!

Ti forks and bars can make barspins feel crazy already especially with average light wheels and tires. Full tilt with carbonic rims and light tires and even light chromo forks and bars is gonna be silly. Kinda scared for my ti bike plan. Fork bars frame and cranks ti. Carbonic rims. And hubs lighter than profiles even for my coaster. Spokes potentially lighter than titanium.

Alf the regular nips are brass. Also for ti spokes alloy nipples are a bad idea. Cold welding. Aka galvanic corrosion or whatever. They're gonna rust each other out and fuse together. Good grease can prevent it sometimes. Why sometimes butted spokes and alloy nipples is cheaper and lighter. Depends on length the butting profile and nipples used.

So if you do both wheels it will reduce rotational weight and make spins a lot easier. This is science in a nutshell. The true question is, is that what you want? When jumping and balancing on a bicycle the rotational weight of the wheels is what helps keep the bike stable. So this will really depend on what you as a rider want to gain or lose with lighter wheels.

Late but many butted spokes are actually stronger than regular straight gauge spokes. Sapim d light or force for example. Ti spokes are still generally lighter but only if you don't account for nipple weight and best practices. Ti spokes brass nipples. Steel spokes alloy nipples. Some people get away with ti spokes and alloy nipples but it's risky. Deffs lube nipples in that case. Sapim cx rays while more expensive now then ti spokes. Are almost the same weight. Much stronger. And aero. Like almost twice as strong as regular spokes. But the advantage and cost reasoning is stronger and lighter with better fatigue life plus higher tension is possible. Ti spokes can't be tensioned as high thus your wheels are always a little less strong even if the spoke itself is basically the same strength as a standard spoke.

@Yoann Fauché lol. I may be using them in my worlds lightest street wheel set for bmx part of my build plan to beat Ricky veronic and his silly drilled full of holes ti bike with lots of wasted money. Newest rim idea is eclat carbonic rims. However there are some alloy rims that'd work albeit need more frequent replacement but depending on build kit I could maybe fit a vandal in the rear. Berd spokes or cx rays. Maybe ti for cheaping out. Free coaster hub. Freenight planetary or clone. Ti axle alloy nuts ti or aluminum driver. On whichever companies clone shell is lightest. Far east cycles front hub. Alloy shell ti internals. Tree straight pull rear hub. Custom ti axle ti 14mm bolts and ti or alloy driver. 7075 would keep with the tree vibe and be cheaper though. Rnc ti cranks albeit I want 3 piece versions. Otherwise maybe some others or chromo crank arms. Ti frame fork and bars. Race stem. Carbon post. Maybe a carbon pivotal seat but partly for weight reduction partly cause of strength and seat shape and size. Gamut headset spacers. Lightest brake housing possible. Ti knarps. Ti boots everywhere almost. Except seat clamps probably an alloy bolt. Same with brake lever. Few drilled holes. Bb spacer. Few under the seat clamp. One tire and a few other bits I had planned to use don't exist anymore. But Few other things have gotten better. That said with alloy rims and the discontinued rear tire I planned. Brakeless with a cassette and a stripped seat. Like 10 pound range. Potentially under depending on pedals and a few other details. Same weight as Ricky's lightest build was with a gyro. But mine also includes 2 steel pegs or plastic or 3 alloy pegs. Partly disabled as well physically. So kinda tryna cheat the weight weenie side of things and be able to ride longer snd do more of what I used to be able to. Basically a bike specifically for tailwhips and 540 cabs and similar stuff. Ti spokes came down in price though. They're like 2 dollars a spoke usd. Berd are like 8 I heard. Sapim would be between ti and berd spokes. But sre stronger than standard straight gage regular steel spokes. Personally for most people I say sapim d light or force spokes. And alloy nipples. And run the lightest tires that you like and hold up decently well. Bigger savings in other areas and for bmx every rotational part matters to a point and over all bike weight does as well. Most bars forks and cranks are over 2 pounds. Even for lighter options. Lightest options get you sub 2 pounds. Sometimes only by an ounce or 2. Sometimes by 4 which is a qp. Also cheaper areas to save weight. When picking out stems for example. Or sprockets and hubs. Or even seat post. If you know you want a light bike get a carbon post. Unlikely it'll break and even if it does its replacement cycles. Figure out replacement intervals and find ways to cut weight or get as light as possible while getting the longest intervals. Including hand built wheels built by a good wheel builder and pre stressing the shit out of it before the first ride and retensioning and trueing everything. Using grease. And luring everything that should be lubed including spokes and nipples. Using proper bearing presses or ghetto rigging a legit press not a hammer and wood. Like my next mostly chromo build is likely 23.5 with 3 steel pegs a gyro huge bars. And nothing overly weight weenie plus a long ass stem. But replacement cycles goes for spokes. For the money. I'd probably trust cx rays more then berds with grinds involved. But I'd rather just save the money risk and use sapims basic butted spokes and tune which exact profile butting I wanted. Lighter front stronger rear. But I also balance my bikes front to rear as best I can while getting weight as low as possible. Weight distribution can matter as well. Saving weight on rims and tires/tubes plus spokes matters more then hubs. But you can use tube weight to make up for front to back balance and tire differences and pegs. If you run 2 front pegs for example and a slightly wider front tire consider the total weights. And then balance of the frame with the rest of its bits aside from the wheels. Better weight distribution and a solid feeling bike with a perfect geo for your preferences is better than a few pounds worth of weight savings. But unless you're huge or really break parts and run 4 pegs and a gyro plus front brake. You really shouldn't push past 25 ish pounds maybe 26. Even without titanium. If you run 22mm 48 spline cranks. Worth seeing if you can find a ti spindle for them. If 19mm chromo spindles hold up fine. 22mm ti spindle cranks might be lighter and stronger. Think about material weight. Steel is heavier than titanium by about 40 percent for the same strength. Aluminum is lighter than titanium. Some ti parts are not for saving weight. And in some cases running aluminum is fine if you treat the parts properly. Example would be profile 22mm ti spindles come with aluminum spindle bolts. Use a crank arm installation tool or the stock chromo bolts and then once installed swap bolts to alloy. Seat clamps, For how cheap they are a 7075 nut and bolt can work fine might need to be replaced more than titanium. But not so frequently for most that you'd notice. Hollow stem bolts aren't necessarily as strong as ti bolts. But for a pivotal seat bolt they're about the same weight hollow chromo to ti. Some bolts can be shortened. Lever bolts for example. Don't waste money on carbon headset spacers. Fsa and some others make cheaper lighter plastic ones that hold up fine. Or find some weight relieved aluminum ones like gamut or jrc. Harder to get now. But 7075 alloy barrel adjusters were like 6 for the price of 2 or 3 ti ones. And lighter. Spline drive gets rid of a bolt versus swapping it for titanium. Even 2 pound cranks. With ti spindle alloy bolts and no sprocket bolt. You can get weight with sprocket and arms and bolts sub 2 pounds. Example would be 33 ounce animal akimbo cranks. Profile spindle compatible, so ti profile spindle free alloy bolts. Tree spline drive 22mm sprocket. Also better than profile cause can still run sprockets that need a bolt.

@Yoann Fauché haha nah man I'm kind of a pro weight weenie. Back during the macneil era I was riding with dudes like Chris silva and chijioke Okafo. Even met Jay miron. My Gary Young 2 frame build with heavy ass wtp helium street forks the og ones and powerbites was like 21.5 without any real titanium on the thing and solid street proof rims. Eastern wasn't the only one that started the weenie thing but yeah the reaper kinda kicked off the ridiculous trend within weight weenie culture. Surprisingly those frames held up decently well as long as it wasn't used for heavy street or big dudes, and as long as you had one of the generations without the bad welds. Despite only being a touch heavier alot stronger than that one premium frame that was sub 4 pounds and build like a scooter lol. Realistically. My rims are heavier than Ricky's for that build. But My hubs are substantially lighter by a large margin. Like probably a qp plus difference before drilling. And I'm shemale modding the coaster and the tree is profile mini weight with all chromo hardware and a stronger shell design. Frame weights and other parts will be similar. But he also failed in a few spots on his build. Especially at that time period. He could've gotten his custom ti cranks. But used a kink ceramic titanium bb. And saved weight in other areas that equals to more then what he did save with his headset and gyro set up. Without cutting giant holes in shit. He also pulled the mtb stem on a bmx and picked not the best option. And given he used custom bars versus I'm going semi production. He could've ran tapered bars and cut weight even further. Specced I used the 22mm solid arm rnc cranks. I could go much lighter. I could run a alloy front rim and rear rim that saves almost another half pound. And if I wasn't being silly and using the ti grim reaper eastern still occasionally makes batches of. I could go lighter. If laird was more willing to do custom ti forks or I go with another maker. I can shed a few grams at least by picking my preferred shorter offset. Let alone if I went tapered legs and increased diameter of the tubing and used butted tubes. My headset spacers are like a gram each. And when I do get around to a custom frame once I decide on weenie bike geo and write a review on the current eastern ti frames. Save a bit of weight Especially if I go welded mounts versus removable. Taller headtube plus the mods for gyro clearance means I can run shorter steerer in total length. Plus switch to tapered which has strength benefits while also not needing as much weight for the same strength increase as just making thicker tubes. And all the bits are essentially available from various suppliers. Eastern ti reaper. Mostly cause cheap and generic geo. Eastern ti bars. Same as others and their welds aren't shit anymore. Laird forks or custom. Rnc ti cranks 165mm. Tree sprocket. Maybe custom ti spline drive insert. Alloy spindle bolts. Alloy seat clamp bolt if I can or stock ti. Carbon post. Maybe carbon custom seat pan and custom cover with light weight padding so I can run thicker padding and have a stronger seat that'll last forever. Aican bungurus shifter housing for the lowers. Modded with different liners. Aluminium bolt on dual cable guides and stops. Like the new shadow Sano ones but lighter. Alloy barrels everywhere. Titanium or polymer fiber inner wires. Titanium knarps. Ti set screws everywhere. Ti brake mounts and bolts. Lightest arms on the market. With tuned hardware to reduce weight further. 1 pound bars. 1 pound fork. 3 pound frame. Wheelset is less than 6 pounds at lightest with tires and tubes. Like sub 6.5 with pegs. After mods or if I use a different gyro with upper knarps built in and modsing an m2 lever or using other levers. My brake set up is essentially sub 1 pounds for a gyro when it's best practice to assume 1 pound for the lightest brake set ups. Not even going anything fancy and being not that knowledgeable in mtb and dj bikes. I've got a dj plan built street proof down to like 23 pounds not even at its lightest cheaply without giving uo strength. And it's within weights or running the lightest possible components capable of the riding styles. Could save an ounce on the rear hub. For twice the rear hub price. Using a twice the price fork and a more expensive front hub that is made to order and takes 2 months. Save a little over half a pound. But also give uo some strength. Rims only upgrade is to carbon weareone rims. Which planned in the future but save almost 200 grams per rim. Cx rays. My hub choices. And a few other bits. Including tire choices. And just a few other bits and the huge amounts kf saved money make it easy to just out boutique him in areas that gain more savings then his spending did. Like his ti chain. Hard to find now but back then where was a race half link you could buy that was like 10.7 ounces for an uncut chain....in the wider width. Even if he replaced 1 a month and rode 12 months solid every year. It'd take a few years before the costs equaled out. And that's not accounting for fraken chains or buying wholesale discounts direct from manufacturer. At the time he could've done the rob ridge and others Ezra mod. And gotten his rear hub like 4 ish ounces lighter before drilling holes. For the custom frame when I get there. My seat clamp is gonna weight 7 grams. Frame even if I go removable mounts is likely gonna end up sub 3 because of a few weight saving tricks and increased strength. However I might double tube thicknesses at that point. And throw a few other heavier parts on and balance the bike better and perfectly for my riding. And make it bomb proof like 16 pounds with 3 steel pegs ti guard sprocket, some beefy huge downhill pedals for tailwhips and a holder chain cause 710s are my favorite plus heavier tires. Mostly just beating Ricky to show how bad his build plan was. I technically had his build beat before it existed. With even more readily available parts. Weight weenie era had alot of smaller titanium parts brands. More boutique parts brands. And in general some better weenie parts but alot of trash as well. But no fork currently matches a director. Some old frames were just as strong and lighter than current frames plus advancements would make em better. One frame even used higher end reynolds downtubes back then. I'm sure Ricky is a cool dude. But this is offensive and I mean it. He built that first and second uber weenie renditions like a pure park rat kid with too much money and not enough brains. The one with the disc brake is legit though. But yeah. My Gary Young 2. With forks bars stem and cranks swap. Was within pounds of his bike with gyro and coaster. In 2010....a ti frame ti bars ti forks and certain chromo cranks. Would've gotten me to within a pound and a half. With like 12 ounces heavier rims.... and steel spokes brass nipples and stock basic brake housing and inners. My powerbites to other cranks a stem swap and a fork swap Would've dropped a pound without going uber lighter. Like just directors not even dk Rt forks. And using not the lightest cranks. Pure weenie that weights been achievable with work for like a better part of a decade and a half or more. Depending what's available at the time determines how custom or weird you gotta go. Think lowest possible weight depending on exact savings from trimmed bits and drilled bits like the bb spacer. Is like 10 flat with a cassette no brakes and a slim seat. Potentially like 9.9 pounds. Depends on rider weight and what you ride and how much you case. Park you can go stupid light on pedals and make it work and get sub 10. The day he build it I could've saved like a qp on his bike or more. Cut the integrated ti post. Weenie clamp. Carbon post. Ti is heavier than aluminium. Lighter hubs. Alloy barrel adjusters. Different brake lever. Lighter rear tire while also meaning he could put a fatter front tire up front and still save weight just from tire swaps and have a skinny more durable rear with better grip. Discontinued now though. Back in those days even cassette side a tree with an aftermarket ti center axle and the tree 7075 14mm rear axle bolts would've been lighter even without going to ti driver. The bungarus housing existed back then as still made metal housing and is within weight of his nokon carbon beads that failed. And modded can be run tight enough to fit what he needs.

@@jdm91hatch if i would try 4cross i would need 192mm. I'm going for 3cross but the problem is that i can only get 2mm shorter spokes then necessary locally. My LBS says that they don't stock 188mm because its not necessary and they only use 186mm for their front wheels. I'm not sure who to trust here, calculator or LBS. If i would go for the 188mm it would be more expensive then buying locally, not by much, but still.

The g sport nipples save so much weight and are stronger and is a cheaper option than using ti spokes if it came down to a choice of budget or preference than regular ones aluminium spokes and nipples aren't strong at all They strip easily and you can't use any tools on the nipple because aluminium is a soft metal

The to spokes broke all the time on me. Money is no issue for me but more of a pain was replacing spokes. After a year of ti spokes I went back to steel and haven't broken any spokes in 18 months. Could not be happier. As for weight I'm pretty strong due to weight training so I don't really notice any difference. Ti spokes are good for skinny wimps.
