Are These eMTBs For People Who Hate eBikes?

Спорт

It's no secret that some mountain bikers HATE eBikes, Neil Donoghue has been recently riding his full-power ebike quite a bit. However, he can see some of the reasons why there may be some pushback against eMTBs. Today Neil is joined by Rich Payne to try out some new lightweight eMTBs to see if these are the assisted bikes us mountain bikers have been waiting for!

I have tried Canyon Spectral ON recently and I loved it. That was a proper E-Bike but I'm not as fit as I used to be and I'm rideing on more flat terrain on daily basis. But trying and E-bike in the mountains was super fun. I didn't have a problem with it's being to heavy as I wouldn't make the top on regular bike. Even going down on some singletracks was fun - sure it wasn't playful but it allow me to make it in the first place.

So. I just turned 51 yesterday. I’ve been riding bikes my whole life. I raced bmx as a kid and I got in to mountain biking 20 years ago. I’ve had several different hard tails and full suspension bikes throughout the years. I got in a car accident in early 2020 which resulted in 2 herniated discs and physical therapy, etc… I tried getting back on a bike in late 2022 and to be fair, it wasn’t easy. I can barely do 3 miles in the woods without my legs burning and my back hurting and some heavy breathing. I bought my first ebike last Saturday as a gift to myself. I got the niner rip9e. I was able to go out and do 8 miles in like 35-40 minutes without getting too winded or sore. I can tell this is going to be a whole new era for me. Thank the lord for technology. Lol. Now, I look forward to going out riding with my 15 year old son. I hope he can keep up.

That “light” Trek would be CDN $18,000 (tax included) in Canada, and we are still looking at 42 lbs that you have to lift when loading, unloading and bringing the bike in/out of your house. Those who truly need the help of a motor, may not have the strength to handle the lifting that sometimes is unavoidable. 😀 Prices aside, most of us older guys (I am almost 62) who are candidates for e-bikes don’t need 150mm enduro level bikes. I ride a short travel trail bike (YT Izzo with 130mm travel) and that is plenty of bike for a former XC racer. My bike is far from the light bikes I used to race, but it is still reasonable at 28 lbs. I cannot imagine lugging a 42 lbs bike up the stairs into my house and then down the stairs into my basement. 😅

I struggled with the full fat bikes because they’re so heavy; a 55lbs bike make its weight known on jumps and drops. I also hated the feeling when you hit the limiter however I did see the appeal. I made the jump to a lightweight e-bike last year and love it. I ended up with a massively discounted Kenevo SL and it offers just enough power to take the sting out of climbs, feels natural to ride and lets me get more laps in.

Good for those who want a light ebike, like my mate who's forced to use them because of health. However ebikes still have a much more limited life then a normal bike, the drive train, power system and motor are not upgradable and they have limited second hand value. On top of that you need a computer and specialist software to link control units to motors and specialist tools to service motors making maintenance especially expensive, on top of the initial cost. Unless necessary they still don't look like a good investment. If I had to use one these would definitely be on my shopping list though.

I'd like to see the pros and cons of both bikes, not which one is "best". Sometime I find myself regretting not getting the ebike when I bought the Trek Fuel (Fuel EXE vs Fuel EX). I decided against the eBike for only two reasons. The first was the eBike cost more, but what's more credit card debt at this point. The second was something personal to me. I live here in Hawaii, on the island Oahu, which means I need to fly to go mountain bike riding any where else in the world, and right now eBike don't fly (due to battery size, and fire risk). I feel like rinding an E-MTB has helped me progressing so much quicker in riding MTB in general, because depending on where you ride you can easily do 2-3 times more laps. I do feel the weight of my full power, heavy EMTB, but not necessarily in a bad way, it gives you so much stability in really rough sections. And that confidence translates to the MTB and once you get used to handle a heavy EMTB (which actually doesn't really take long) you automatically get better at handling an EMTB. Plus, I generally ride more, especially in snowy and very muddy conditions, because the motor carries you through stuff that you barely could ride on an MTB.

I have a Trek ExE TQ bike. It might be the greatest bike ver built. I went on vacation and rode 30-50 miles a day for a week without feeling beat up. My channel has she videos.

I'm happy with my carbon hardtail MTB but don't mind if someone wants a pedal assist eBike if their fitness is not 100% or they have a lot of steep uphills, against throttle only eBikes - they're definitely 'motorbikes'.

I don’t hate them, I just can’t afford them. One day il have one. Il probably wait until they have been standardised , otherwise I feel like I may be wasting my money.

@@joshuaallswang8016 it’s annoying being overtaken by them , but it brings more money to the sport in the form of R&D so ultimately we all win. Plus with cost of uplift skyrocketing at the moment it’s an investment to save a bit of cash in long run if they come down in price.

The biggest issue isn't riding one or not. It's our old outdated legislation. All the local trails I want to ride don't allow e-bikes :/

I liked the look of that Trek til I looked up the price. I'll continue panting away on my 9 year old Remedy 8

Reliability of the motors is the biggest issue for me.

I don't have the time to build up the stamina for analog and want to enjoy a full day on a bike in the bikepark and want to learn jumping and so much other things. I am 47 and got a fullpower 26kg alloy bike. I thought it would not make a difference on what bike I learn, since I am a mtb beginner. This little more effort compared to a mid or light to move it around is negligable in my eyes... And if I drive my anaolg Canyon I have the benefit of being used to a heavy bike.... MX guys have bikes with 70 or more kg, and weigh themselves not more that 60 or 70 kg....

What about going from full power e bike to mid assist? How much does it suck? Lol
