Are there eSIM Hidden Dangers?

Ғылым және технология

Some new phones like the iPhone comes only with an eSIM option. No physical SIM cards. Does this matter? Isn't it more convenient when a SIM card does not have to be inserted? This may be a direction we are going into that may prove to be a dangerous move for privacy.

    I can answer some of your questions: 1. E-Sim is not stored in rom, and thus not removed with a factory reset / reflash. 2. You need Google Play Services to install a E-Sim in most if not all cases ( at least in the Netherlands ), but no need to sign in to Google. 3. You can remove an E-Sim using a service menu ( on Google Pixel phones at least ). I had to install an E-Sim on a degoogled phone, this was not possible on a Google Pixel 6A with Lineage OS and Arrow OS without Google Play Services, had to bring it back to stock, sideload a carrier app and then download and install the E-Sim. After the E-Sim was installed i could flash my deGoogled firmware ( erase everything ) and still use the E-Sim afterwards.. Luckily it is possible to erase the E-Sim with a deGoogled phone, no Google Play Services needed for that.. Haven;t tested this with Micro-G.. Hope this answers some of your questions, i will keep my current phones and will never use E-Sim again.. Thanks for explaining how a phone works with and without an (E)Sim regarding radios!

Didn't know the phone was in listening mode only and did not send a identifier without a sim card. I always thought that it would be sending the EMEI to the cell towers ( if not in airplane mode ), if they know your EMEI then why would you want to hide your IMSI? they could link the two ( or have in the past ) am i right? Sound, light among many other things are also just frequency...

    There is a shared memory between modem processor and applications processor. The esim is populated by the OS via QR code so there's a passing mechanism to move it to the flash storage of the modem processor. IMEI is passed when the IMSI makes a connection. Otherwise it is not part of the initial connection exchange.

He just states a bunch of mumbo jumbo without real hard science to scare people for views. We know governments have used phones to track who is in certain areas and to use that against them.. yeah pretty dangerous if you do not tow the company line especially.

    In my opinion it’s a matter of lying , like not using a real name on social media (specifically where people are encouraged to do so), and since there’s no law that forces a person to have their phone with them at all times, it’s a matter of leaving the phone where you want the government to think you are for the duration of a demonstration, courts will have fun mounting evidence against evidence to prove someone WAS somewhere …

    Many people assume and will even argue that eSIMs are superior to SIM cards. Because the phone OEMs and the carriers have positioned eSIMs as a commodity technology. Before you automatically, blindly, passionately assert that eSIMs are somehow superior - before you rush out to buy one - you must answer one specific question: exactly how are eSIMs better, what specific advantage do they provide to consumers that SIM cards do not?

  • @BillAnt

    @BillAnt

    @@Mantarr1 - If you break the screen of your phone, good luck switching your eSIMs to another phone. They are much more difficult to swap because carriers nowadays must send a 6 digit verification code to your broken phone which you can't see the screen. With a sim card you can just simply swap it into another phone don't even have to tell the carrier.

    Encryption will only protect your "privacy" for a short session. For the duration of your bank login or whatever. Encryption will never protect "privacy" for long-term data storage. It's just a matter of how much computing power can be dedicated to decrypting the data. And it always becomes a trivial exercise after hardware gets a few iterations better just a handful of years down the road. Don't rely on encryption to keep your secrets safe forever.

Since he is disabled , all he can do is stream shows and music. We could use an MNVO but he uses upwards of 750+ GB a month so we not only have to pay for the highest tier plan even though Verizon doesn’t offer 5G anywhere even remotely close to where we live but we have to endure their taunting, demoralizing and unprofessional behavior and foul language the likes of anything you’ve ever heard from a major corporation. I could file a lawsuit right now and be able to live the rest of my life without having to worry about finances or my children’s finances. 19 months of harassment, bullying, threats and abuse captured and stored safely. I can’t wait for the day I finally give them what they deserve. They’ve actually made my son’s mental health substantially worse to the point where he is scared to make a call or even go to the store. I don’t see how they are “considered” as the number one best wireless provider. You can’t even talk to an actual person without jumping through hoops just to do so. T-Mobile is the best in my book and superior to Verizon in every aspect, especially coverage and customer service. I had a 'friend' some time ago, who had received a bit of shall we say , unwanted attention, from one of the alphabet agencies. Sooo, he mailed his long time "secure" cell phone to a remote area in equatorial Africa lol. While I can't rerify it, he swore to me later, that sure as hell, a 'contact' of his duly reported to him that sure as hell, two 'unidentified' foreigners showed up where the phone had remained in the local mail depot, and took possession. LOL Sometimes these agency peeps crack me up::) Moral of the story, simply don't use YOUR cell phone if you're going/doing anything 'sketchy'. PS: one caveat tho, you STILL have to consider OTHER forms of surveillance: i.e., sat images (amazing how good the camera's and i.d. algorithms have gotten), as well as the infrastructure for tracking chains of financial transactions, not to mention the standard 'tail' :) In these days, a good old "tangled web of deception" is what you WANT LOL.

    I work at at phone repair shop, and when an "Emergency" message is sent out due to bad weather or crime, all the phones in the shop go off with a blaring siren sound, with or without a SIM card. So yes, all phones can be accessed by the National Emergency Network, including their location. In fact you can call 911 with or without a sim card and they can see your location (accurately if GPS is on, and roughly if GPS is off). Also eSIM's suck, for both privacy and making it more difficult to switch to another phone especially with a broken screen since now carriers sent a text code for verification. Normally we use an active test sim for testing purposes after each repair, but now with more eSIM phones it's becoming more difficult to test phones quickly by simply popping a sim in and out.

    00:00 🔍 eSIMs, while not removable like physical SIM cards, pose potential privacy risks due to their operational similarities. 03:21 📱 Location-based threats, like Geo fencing, can utilize cell phone location data obtained from carriers, impacting privacy rights. 05:35 📡 Without a SIM card, a phone remains passive in radio reception mode; inserting a SIM card activates transmission, initiating connection attempts with carrier towers. 08:44 🗼 Tower triangulation, based on signal strength from multiple towers, determines rough phone location, posing privacy concerns. 10:22 🔄 Removing a SIM card halts transmissions; however, iPhones continue emitting signals even when turned off, affecting tracking capabilities. 12:36 💳 eSIMs, functionally similar to physical SIM cards, lack a clear method to erase subscription data, potentially perpetuating unauthorized transmissions. 15:31 ⚠ In emergency situations, having a removable SIM card provides options for privacy; eSIMs, lacking this option, could pose risks, especially with iPhones.
