Maybe y'all should think of raised beds with the cut off's from the wood you mill and this way of gardening you could admin your soil and the beds heat up sooner then the ground, just a suggestion

Informative video again. I can only give you the advice my grandfather gave me when I first started planting my large (1/4 acre) backyard garden. First, if your planting a garden for food, plant food; If your planting a garden for flowers, plant flowers, can't grow well planted together either. You can plant marigolds at the ends if your garden rows to help with insects and wild deer. Second, plan your garden's layout. Third, don't sow your seeds or plants to close together. Fourth, as soon as you sow climbing seeds or plants establish their trussells. Fifth, plants love God's water best, but well water is better than no water.

Unfortunately the shells take a long time to become plant available. Quicker is 1 tsp crushed egg shells +1 quart vinegar salt overnight or longer until it stops fizzing. Dilute 1 part mix to 10 parts water. Use on any plants for spray (leaves etc) or just watering.

Have you ever thought about using drip irrigation instead of that sprinkler in your garden? Could put one of your water totes up on a stand and run the dripper lines to the plants and let gravity do the rest. Would only have to run your pump long enough to fill the tote. Uses way less water than running a sprinkler and wetting down the whole garden.

You need organic fertilizer.. I use Thistle and banana peel, let it soak in a bucket of water, for 6 weeks. Drain it throw the waste onto your pile of composte and use the liquid with one part of fertilizer to ten parts water. It's very concentrated by then. Then put on plants every 2 weeks...all that yummy potassium and other goodies will definitely make everything grow

So glad to get this update and especially that you're safe and that the rain is on it's way. I felt so bad about the comment about relentless tidying after your projects and I need to balance this with comments about your hard work, resilience and creativity. The garden looks great - despite the conditions - and so does the barn. Home-grown food is wonderful and I hope the incentive of great tasting and inexpensive produce will make you feel good. It is a great reward for hard work. Thanks for the update, keep safe and will look forward to the next vid.

I grew some Butternut squash that were a bush type last year. That was after the normal kind took over the garden one year. I did get about 25 squash though much more than the bush variety. You should get a soil test for your garden to make sure you aren't amending with the wrong materials. Good luck!

Its slow release and have not had BER since. Each season is different depending on weather, nutrients etc and I think we are all learning to garden to suit each year. Just keep trying 😊

I am a gardener, I grow zucchini, Kabocha ( Japanese pumpkin) Tomatoes, corn, sweet peppers, melons and fruit trees. You need to get Bone meal for calcium. You also need compost. Add egg shells to the soil for a slow release calcium. I prune off crossing branches on tomatoes to avoid fungi on the plants. Get AIR circulation through the plant which prevents the fruit being infected with soil borne fungi. Never wet the leaves of a tomato plant. water the roots ( ground level) don't let them sit on the ground, tie them up! Some people dis agree with me but the true reason why is they are LAZY to do the work of caring for a garden. If you add Bone meal to the soil, also add it to your compost bin. Put aged chicken manure in your garden for the nitrogen. Don't over water, just get soil moist and your plants will thank you. Happy gardening.

Safe and sound. Continue to build soil quality asyou gradually mix composted material. Foraging animal waste will act as a natural fertilizer. Developing raised beds from decaying forest material, wood chips, compost, soil could ensure more consistent soil quality.

I'm so glad you have been safe from the fires and look forward to the next video to see your plans. I imagine you have a landscape or garden supply dealer in the area that can do an analysis on the garden soil. It might be as simple as tilling in some soil ammendments as you prep the area for next season. Sorry for the stressful week for you Katie and the loss of the chickens. A pig or two will be a good addition to the homestead. It will be fun to watch the interaction of the goats and the pig. Thanks for the walk around Katie and Greg. Have a good week and be safe. We live in Chilliwack, BC and the last few days we have not had much smoke in the sky. On Sunday I suffered from a massive headache which could well have been caused by the heavy smoke of Saturday and Sunday. There were some minor fires nearby, but nothing like Kelowna and Shushwap where more that 90 structures became ashes! The wildfires are difficult to stop. For the last two or three years our forests have had well below normal precipitation. From far away the trees may look healthy, but they are not! Are rivers are very low, and salmon will have difficulty swimming upstream to spawn.

You are so Canadian, feeling bad about pulling out “volunteer “ tomato plants. Don’t take this as a criticism, I have 6 (4’x8’) raised beds with so much production! I hate throwing out any plants 🌱 ,seedlings, I like to give everything a chance. My daughter worked at a large greenhouse during the summer while going to university. She would bring home orphan plants 🪴 and anything being thrown out. This was 8 years ago, where we put them in the “holding tank”. Well this holding tank is now permanent, I am so weak!

The old housing which was against the bus could be used to grow tomatoes, courgettes and other salad crops in grow-bags. Replace the roof with corrugated plastic to let the light in. Must be better than having the wild life eat everything. I would also say raised beds would be better for growing other veg outdoors, about 3 foot in height minimum as carrot fly can be a pain.

More wildflowers in meadows or where the solar panels are. Hive? All of the herbs attract pollinators. Savoury, oregano… lavender.

I'm south of you in the Puget Sound area of WA and my garden was an epic fail this year as well. My zucchini & other squash have produced almost nothing. You might check your flowers-mine are almost exclusively male. I've found a couple of female flowers and hand-pollinated them. When the fruit rots at the blossom end, it often means that it hasn't pollinated and so isn't viable. This has been a good year to just make stuffed squash blossoms, which are delicious! Thank you for keeping us updated on the fire situation in your area. It's frightening where I am as well. The sign at the fire station went from "very high" risk to EXTREME risk recently. I truly enjoy your videos-thank you!

Guys, think about some type of Greenhouse building. Keep out all the animals, control temperatures, probably control insects Raised beds in there would be great top. Think it thru. You two have great imaginations and I know you can do it Year around growing season quite possibly

Are you going to be clearing more trees from around the house for fire safety? Glad you are safe.

Squash is not getting pollinated you may have to hand-pollinate use a Q-tip and running around in the mail flower and then go to the female flower and rub the pollen on to the female

Hi Katie and Greg. If you have a place to take some soil samples and have them tested, that might help with the garden. Some flowers are edible so that could be a choice. If you can go it, try growing okra. It is, to me, best fried. Have good days!

Bonemeal combats blossom end rot. If small squash form but fail to grow that's a pollination issue.

Pretty experienced gardener here. The first thing I noticed in you garden: it is crowded. Some plants need A LOT of space to develop well. Especially if they are not heavily fertilized with chemicals. Don't even think at zucchinis as long as you do not allocate a few square meters to each plant. And generally, for each species research what the optimal spacing is (but not for intensive industrial culture). I know, it is very tempting to put more plants, but it simply doesn't work. Something else: I think you said something about some tomato plants that just appeared between other plants. It happens a lot. Treat any plant that you did not plan to be there as WEED: remove it immediately. And of course you have to solve the problem with chickens in the garden. Now, regarding to death of the old hens: I know that you get to love them, but it is not a good idea to keep them more than 3 years. The quantity and quality of the eggs is going down, and also the general health of the bird is no longer optimal. According to the species they belong to, the lifespan of chickens is theoretically 5 to 10 years, but count more on something like 6...

Do you have a good bee population in your area? It could be a pollination problem. Wind does help with pollination, as long as it too windy.
