    Takoradi is Ahanta land but due to its cosmopolitan nature, the fante language has over shadowed the Ahanta language. The Fantes from Elmina, Cape Coast and surrounding towns in the Central Region migrated to Sekondi- Takoradi because of employment at the Railways Corporation. I AM A PROUD AHANTAN FROM DIXCOVE LIVING IN THE UK

    Takoradi was part of the fanti Confederacy, so it is not part of ahantaland, fantis beat ahantas and took all takoradi as fantiland. Half of takoradi was already fantiland, and war broke out between atlantas and fantis because the ahantas supported the ashantis during our wars.

    @@mafiooato7233 please do not fabricate stories. Sekondi was never part of Fante confederacy. The original settlememt was Essikado. Do Fante's celebrate Kundum ? Even today Sekondi does. Also one of the reasons Baido Bonsu fought with the Dutch and Tonnenboijer is because his chiefs in Sekondi ignored his instruction. There was also no reason for Fante to invade Ahanta as they both are coastal. Ahanta did not have allegiance with Asante. At times the Nzema did hence Nzema Kɔtɔkɔ

    Takoradi and Sekondi(Sekonne) people are Ahantas. They are the indigenous people. The Fantes, are immigrants from the Central region of Ghana, who settled in Takoradi and Sekondi. I believe that presently, the Fante immigrants even outnumber the Ahantas. A lot of intermarriages have also taken place between the Fante and Ahanta. The Fante language is now the dominant tongue in Takoradi and Sekondi. Others who have settled in Takoradi also are the Nzemas, Wassas, Asantes, Sehwi etc

OK I get it now.. Like Accra which is Ga land however Twi has dominated Accra and you only get Ga speaking when you go to the suburbs along the beaches...

    In the late 19th century, the Fante launched a campaign to eliminate the Dutch presence on the Ghanaian coast. This was crucial for weakening their adversaries, who had been receiving arms and support from the Dutch West India Company (WIC) to hinder Fante expansion. The Fante succeeded, and the Dutch eventually abandoned their West African businesses, selling all their assets to the British. This effort played a role in triggering the war between the Fante and the Asante (the main allies of the Dutch WIC) in 1873, leading to the Sagrenti War in 1874, with the British siding with the Fante.

    Brilliant. Here is the interesting thing, if we go further back the Mfantsefo and Ahantas migrated to the coast together, from Bono. The Fante chose to settle around Mankessim. There were Guans in this area whilst the Ahantas crossed over the Pra and settled around Shama, eventually they moved further west and made Owulusua (Busua) their capital Sekondi precedes Takoradi and Takoradi only grew because of the harbour built in 1922 or thereabouts, due to the port and it being accessible by rail, people migrated to this commercial hub. It has become a cosmopolitan place with people from all over Ghana making it their home. With that a language that is widely spoken becomes necessary, which was Fante. I also hear that Shama and some other Ahanta divisions didnt want to align themselves with the Ahanta King and with support from the dutch and later the british they along with Insuma (Dixcove) although Ahanta were recognised as independent. There is a report from early twentieth century that alludes to this by F Crowther. Another clue is that Sekondi or Essikado celebrate Kundum. Kundum is an Ahanta festival. Whatever the case we love the twin cities; Sekondi-Takoradi (always Sekondi first). Ɔrɛkɔdo !

    @@cookingwithsindaco Thanks, i think it is more gratefulness to the places we migrate to and become part of. After all the Fante brought the beautiful Fante language to Takoradi which acknowledges where they came from and retains that link. Takoradi Fante is a thing itself. It is often overlooked how from time immemorial we have lived together and if you stay in any one place long enough you become part of it. The best example being the Tabom people. Another point i was trying to make is when they migrated together from Bono, there was no distinction, Ahanta and Fante developed after the migration.

    Fantes and Ahanta never migrated together, it's a myth. Ahantas are more related to Nzema interms of language and culture. Fantes in Takoradi don't feel proud of their hometowns so they adopt Takoradi as their hometown. No Asante man will migrate to a different place for so long and claim to be an indigene of the place, it's a character of most Fantes, that when they travel they forget their roots. There are lot Fantes in Tema but that doesn't make them GA's

    @@kobina2031 @kobina2031 and yet the Baoule are a group who not only broke away from the Asante, those leading them was a direct descendant of the Asante royal family. But today they are Baoule not Asante. Even their language is different from Twi. Wassa also absorbed many refugees that came from Asante, today those absorbed by the Wassa identify as... Wassa The Ahanta may be close in terms of culture to Nzema but part of that is due to proximity. There is also a transition from Nzema proper, in between are the Ɛvaloɛ, Dwira before Ahanta. All evidence points to the first Ahanta settlements being around Shama near the Pra, thus they came from the East not the west like the Nzema.

  • @kwawkwansah2452

    @kwawkwansah2452

    @@kobina2031 i think your focus is also very narrow. Quoting Tema as an example. The circumstances are not the same. Tema is a more recent 'new' city and miles away from the nearest Fante state. There are people from all over Ghana there, thus Fante is not and unlikely to be predominant there. Whilst Takoradi is but a few miles away from Fante land and is a immediate neighbour of Ahanta. Thus significant interactions go back further. As cited already it may have been the Ahanta divisional chiefs who aligned with the Fante in order to gain autonomy and not be subject to the Ahanta King and state, so, and i believe this to be so, there are Ahantas also who think they are Fante or part of Fante. And in that respect, there is no evidence to suggest Fantes are claiming to be Ahanta rather they come from Takoradi, which if they have been there a long time they do. Not sure with your bellicose protestations your point is. However i would say if you move somewhere it seems courteous to integrate with the people you live amongst and that does not mean that you forsake what went on before. Your argument suggests all Akans should insist to this day they are Bono or even Malian or your wrath will be visited upon them 😄?
