All right I have had a lot of questions about the surfprep sanders and if I like them so this week we look at how I use it and what my experience has been with the sander and the company.

    I have the Festool RTS 400 sander which has basically the same specs, 2mm orbit and 16k max speed, but is only $280 with an edge protector, a sustainer and dust bag for quick uses. Also the Festool cord detaches at the machine so cord breakage is almost nonexistent, and you can swap cords or get a replacement easily. The SurfPrep machines are $500 bare. It's also a rebranded unit, the same machines sell under other names as well. That is likely why the price is higher since it is purchase via a reseller. I just became aware of the soft pads for sanding complex profiles and was excited to find that Surfprep sells them for other brands including my Festool RTS along with the Delta and the 5 and 6 units.

    Yeah if you like the festool that’s cool a lot of people love them and they are good sanders. Yes the surfprep sanders are made in the same factory as air advantage, and uneeda but they are specked differently ie different motors, cases so all that figures into the cost. The cord issue is interesting because the original v1 surfprep sanders had a detachable cord they had issue with that system. I still have v1 which is 6 years old now and when my cord went bad 3 years ago they replaced it with the attached cord. Yes surfprep made the decision last year to make pads for festool users so that they didn’t have to buy their sanders if they were happy with festool. They are one of The best companies in the business. They believe in helping others.

    Thanks good info. I have a Bosch 5” random orbital sander (ROS10) and it works much better than the Dewalt sander it replaced. What makes the surf prep faster? The rpm for the Bosch is 12,000 and surf prep is I believe 10,000. I can see the advantage in the pads for curves and square shape for sanding corners but is it really faster? Trying to justify the price $50 for the Bosch Vs $500 for the surf prep.

    PSJ W the 3x4s shine for scuff sanding or mid coat sanding and in hard to reach areas. You can’t sand cabinet doors very well with a 6/5 inch sander. You can sand the rails and stiles but not the interiors. It sounds like you are not doing enough sanding to see the value yet. If you are sanding less than 8 per week you probably can’t justify the price but if you do one large kitchen say 40-50 doors it will pay for itself in that job alone when you compare hand sanding vs the surfprep system. Looks at were your bottle necks are in you shop and I bet sanding will be one of them. The surfprep 5-6inch sander just cut faster than the cheaper Sanders. I will show a video at some point on that. Hope this helps.

    Is it good for sanding raised panel cabinet door profiles? I make cabinet doors for a living and have always hand sanded using Soft Sanders foam blocks and their awesome sandpaper. I have always thought that using any kind of power sander on the more detailed profiles will roll over the sharp edges and distort the profile. Is this sander mainly the best for scuff sanding finishes? I have know about Surf Prep for a long time now but just never really looked into it.

  • @ericreason6559

    @ericreason6559

    jeremy s in my option yes and no. It depends on the profile and the scratches you are trying to remove or the tooling marks left but your molders. You may have to get creative on some profiles and cut pads etc. In my opinion they are a no brainer but it’s hard to say without seeing what you are sanding exactly. Contact Louis Jasso at surfprep and Depending on where you are in the country they will be more than happy to stop by your shop and evaluate what you are doing and if they can help you increase you productivity. The company is about helping people not just selling Sanders. Thanks for the question.

    I think she was looking for an actual answer-i could be wrong. Some of us don’t use them like you do-daily, but need a good project sander. I love my crapy orbital sander, but would love to understand why this is better. I watched the video and it looked great-but i have always had an issue with non-orbital sanders and my messing up my surface-so I was curious too. Technically speaking. My hubby and I built our kitchen Island, leopard wood and cool drawers and a 1600sq ft deck-as we are getting older we think it might be time we invested in some better tools so we can do more faster with possibly less body pain. 😂

    I do somewhat agree that the price is a bit high but if your a professional. It pays for itself the first job you use it on. Also you will not find better customer service from a company. As far as the sand paper goes. You get what you pay for. A lot of woodworkers think sand paper is sand paper but it isn’t. If you want to be elite in this industry you will learn the differences.

    It breaks down to time / money (cost vs benefit). Similar concept to the high-end tool trucks, like Snap-on or Matco, or industrial tool suppliers, like Hilti. The products are at or near the top of their industry, specializing in the professional, with everything that entails (quality, range of products, service, responsiveness, etc). If for a hobbyist on any kind of budget, or a guy who does landscaping jobs this week, cabinets the next, and tile the week after that (eg, a general contractor), probably not for them. Stick to Harbor Freight or the big-box store brands and get-what-you-need, as-you-go. The cost-benefit argument narrows considerably as you go up in scale in the price range(s), but for a select few it still "pays off" dividends with their respective business model(s). Time and consistent quality really is money at the upper end of most businesses. I had the same kind of exchange with someone recently regarding Apollo HVLP sprayers, such as the Precion-5 Pro LE, a $2k machine. Sure, the quality (end product sprayed finish quality) of the sprayed material itself may not be that much different than the upper-mid range HVLP spray systems (Fuji Q5 Platinum, Titan Capspray 115, or Graco Finishpro 9.5, etc), or the other mid-range options (lower end Fuji, Graco, and others), or even a lower level product done by someone with some skills to make up for the equipment (Paint Society YT channel is a perfect example of someone who can get pro results with a $16 spray gun), but its feature set (digital hours gauge, digital 1/10th PSI adjustability, built-in barometric adjustment for accomodating altitute changes, automotive grade filter, dual air option, optional add-on pressure pot carriage with built-in mini-compressor, convertible gun [from bottom pressure fed to top gravity fed], company decades-old history and quality service & responsiveness) are the icing on the cake for a Pro who can afford and is willing to pay for the extra features and service that come with it. Their time and a product that puts out consistent quality (with service to boot) = productivity gains, which equal $. The inverse, equally, is diminishing returns / gains for the beginner, part-timer, or hobbyist. That's why there is a place for HFT on up to HD / Lowes on up to Rockler/Woodcraft, etc. To accomodate the full range of budgets & needs.
