Great vlog ! I tried college but but liked money and wasn’t afraid to work . I went vocational and had my first 100,000+ year at 24 with no debt ! 59 now and retired loving life , doing what I want. I pissed so many people off over the years by simply saying “ I’m sorry that four year degree didn’t work out the way you thought it would “

I had a scholarship for 75% in-state (Florida)tuition only. I took out subsidized loans for some of the balance. Even though I had a small amount of loan debt, I still regret taking it. I look at it less like a scam and more like a bad investment. I had no idea how bad an investment it was at the time, and neither did my parents. I'm advising my kids to stay in state and not take loans if they decide college is the route for them. No loans!

If possible, live at home and commute. Living on campus is not worth an extra $10-12k per year.

That's what I did. Worked full time. Lived at home. Went to school on nights and weekend all year long. It took 8 years but I finished owing practically nothing.

@@Boblib1970 I have one who will commute to a state school in the fall. He pays books and commuting costs, we keep him housed and fed and pay his tuition (loan free between savings for school, cash flow and merit scholarships he earned). It is his second choice school. He would have to kick in a few thousand a year for tuition at his first choice, a local private school he could commute to. He works and could afford it but wisely decided it wasn't worth it to him. We have raised our kids with the knowledge that student loans are a trap for most and not an option for us.

Hot take here. Parents actually need to parent their 18 year old kids and talk about this. Out of state is a ludicrous idea unless you have a full ride or waiver of out of state fees. No mascot is worth the ankle weights it will put on you.

I went out of state but could justify it because they took so many more of my AP credits that I could graduate in 3 years without taking any summer classes.

@@thomasfrederick71 at least you put some thought into it. That is more than what a lot of people do. I don’t know how much you paid for school, and if that made sense. For the majority of the population in school they don’t look at the cost and how they’ll pay for it. You just hear “I’m chasing my dream”.

My niece went in debt to the tune of $100K to get a Phd in philosophy and now can't find a job that supports a lifestyle that will allow her to pay off her debts.

You want to solve the student loan debt problem? One simple piece of legislation will solve this, maybe even by one stroke of the pen with an Executive Order.... *Make student loans easily dischargeable in bankruptcy,* and watch how fast lending standards are tightened.

You only got about 40 years to work. There is a lot to do in that time. Some of those can include: buy a house, get married, have kids, save for retirement, buy vehicles, vacations, hobbies, etc. Student loans will be a road block for many, if not all of the things i listed.😊

Make colleges offer classes nights and weekends (for stem degrees, not business or art), up the reimbursement for companies from $5,250 to $8k-$10k... Problem solve... they will never do it, they like being the sorting mechanism in society...

Unemployment, by BLS standards, measures the portion of people who WANT a job but the economy absolutely refuses to hire them. Unless you choose to use poverty programs for food and housing, student loans are a great option. At least you get a meal plan and a bed 🛏️. But reality is, very few people are both asset poor and unemployed. Only those kids really benefit from college...

One of my sisters is a teacher who graduated decades ago. To my knowledge, she has never paid the principal down - she may not have paid any of it. She is happy about the possibility of having the debt cancelled. Everyone else in the family who either paid their loan off or didn't get a student loan in the 1st place is not so thrilled about paying off her (and a bunch of other) loans. It's not a subject which comes up a lot in the family when she is present as arguments will ensue. My opinion is that how student loans are handled by the govt is the primary reason that college education is so expensive and spiraling higher.

I bet the freezing of student loans also helped fuel the run up in housing prices from 2020-22.
