Are Skyrim Players Too DUMB for Morrowind?

Ойындар

Today I attempt to prove that Skyrim players are not only the smartest but also the toughest in all the world, but to make it more difficult I made it a permadeath (hardcore) run instead.. It didn't go well.

    @@feiradragon7915 If you have 80+ in Stealth in Morrowind, you dont need no more chameleon nor invisibility. You are invisible the second you crouch in Morrowind. With a skill above 90 you can even sit right in front of NPC and loot their entire house without breaking stealth. And with Archery over 50, you are already doing 100%+ dmg... aside of that, just take throwing weapons (oh... that is nonexistent in Skyrim, ups), and stagger enemies, which already cannot spot you, infinately. Stealth archery in Skyrim is just a ballanced (in a single player game...) ripoff of what Morrowind let you do.

    First time I slept in shirt-less guys bed I woke up to Dark Brotherhood trying to kill me. I didn’t know it was because I had Tribunal installed but thought I somehow misunderstood him, that I wasn’t OK to use his bed and this was how unlawful sleeping was dealt with in Morrowind.

    I first started the series with Skyrim, fell in love with the universe. I then tried Oblivion later and found I enjoyed the questlines more overall, though I don't find myself replaying it as often. I finally tried Morrowind and fell in love with it, and actually laughed when I died to a kwama forager 5 minutes into playing because I had no weapon I knew how to use. It sold me on the game and now I play a modded version of Morrowind just as frequently as I do Skyrim. "Otherwise the Nords would have invaded it by now." They actually did, back in the First Era when the Dunmer were still Chimer. They eventually got driven off when the Chimer and Dwemer united against them, but had occupation for 50 years.

Guess how long it took me to learn that you can "inspect" items in your inventory and that way see the symbols on the claw. The game doesn't explain that you can do that. Nothing hints at that function.

    Morrowind truly is a full fledged RPG with RPG mechanics for basically everything, including combat. Skyrim is more of an action RPG where what you see is what you get. No hidden calculations, no dice rolls. The big disconnect is pretty much that you're playing a game in 1st person, but the mechanics are closer to classic isometric RPGs. So you think that you should damage, because your axe hit the guy on the noggin, but the calculations say that you missed. Not a problem in typical top-down RPGs where you and your character are separate, but in 1st person immersion basically demands that you and your character are the same. It's not "your guy" that fulfills the Nerevarine prophecies, it's you who does it.

    Arena is basically a thing of curiosity. If you want to experience the game for the experience, go for it. If you want it for the story, go for it. If you want the gameplay and world, Daggerfall does the same, but better. And there is a Unity port that is incredibly convenient. Morrowind has a lot of the classic RPG systems. Which can be overwhelming if you don't have experience with old school RPGs, but given enough time, you'll learn the systems and mechanics and get into it. And considering even Morrowind is 20 years old now, I'm sure you can find some old PC for a 5er that will run it just fine. The game was released in 2002, so if you find some old Pentium 4, or Athlon or Core 2 based system with some decent card of the time or something akin to modern integrated graphics, it should run the game without issue.

    I love morrowind more than any of the other games in the series.. but it gets way too easy after about lvl 15 or so. Theres just so many gamebreaking interactions in this game between different skills, vendors, etc. The fun is in the struggle early on and seeing your character grow in power.. but once you hit inevitable god-mode in the playthrough there isn't much to look forward to.

    Glad for all guys "to dumb for Morrowind" that Skywind and Skyblibion make great steps to completions lately... :D And no... newer players are NOT to dumb. Modern games just hold your hand more and we are not used to older game design anymore. And if you dont played it in the old days yourself without the nostalgic lense it is just not realy propably possible to get into it... Even i struggle to get into Morrowind again without heavy modding even if it is my favorite game still.

  • @Randleray

    @Randleray

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah... and thats exactly why TES games get more and more watered down, because the handholding is so massively ingrained in the entire younger gamer community, its really not funny anymore. Skyrim is fun and I like a lot of modern features it has. But omg is it just a gutted TES initself. Especially the 'ballance' argument drives me absolutey frickin crazy. Why the hell do you want to ballance a SINGLE player game?! Beth did away with alchemy utensils so you can only work on stations, also they locked the ability to make better potions behind perks instead of your actuall skill level. They did a way with spell creation WHY? Because it was kinda op in older games? ... Therefor we got stealth archers, which seem to be exclusive to any other possible build, because it gets about 20 different dmg multipliers, thats fun, just throw the other perktrees and skills out already. Instead we got questmarker, so the players can play on autopilot and Beth showed their active anti-care for all those old fans, which actually made them survive through Morrowind, when they just didnt invest 2 workdays to write actual directions, so you could switch off questmarkers. No, now everyone is forced to play on autopilot. The reson for most oldschool fans getting seriously angry with Beth since Oblivion is not because the games got more and more "easier". The reason is Beth forces anyone to play with a powdered butt. There are dozens of videos out there which explain very very objectively why the old Bethesda games before Oblivion have just been better overall - even with the clunky and absolutely outdated mechanics they have.

    I don't think people who started with Skyrim are dumb. It's more that modern games don't trust players to be creative and figure things out in the name of appealing to everyone and generating more income. The balance between creative challenge and streamlined repetition have been tilting towards the latter for a long time now. Morrowind was actually extremely accessible as an RPG for that time if you consider stuff that came out before it like Arena, Daggerfall, or the Wizardry series. Modern games in general condition people into shallow gameplay while dressing it in the mere illusion of choice.
