"There are more issues that divide us than connect us." 1, Some issues are mountains, some are peanuts. You don't count issues, you weigh them. If we agree to disagree, what's our "connectedness" score now? 2. Define "divided". Again, define "diversity (of opinions)". If we have a disagreement, do we have a diversity of opinions or are we divided? 3. "Connected" is not the opposite of "divided", "united" is. Should I feel divided when I don't feel "connected" with you? Certainly not! It's perilous! 君子和而不同。

At the ripe old age of 65, having witnessed our birth as an independent nation and all the struggles we experienced to get to where we are today,as a multi-ethnic and diverse society, I am glad to witness a forum like this where we are able to engage someone from leadership in an inclusive and open discussion.More can be done to correct the mistakes past policies that adversely effect this idea and notion of inclusivity in very specific areas that involve conscription (for example).More can be done so that all(and not just some) of us can meaningly contribute to this very important aspect of our nationhood. Please continue these forums from time to time, so that we can, as people and government can make the right connections to move our country forward into the future. Majulah Singapura !!!

The school uniforms are so that everyone dresses the same, and there would be less comparisons, less differentiation among the students. Scrap it so that religious communities can wear their respective clothing items indicative of their faith will have unintended effects that, I believe, are not conducive for society and school-going children. The rich will start turning up in their branded clothes and bling while the poor may end up with really old clothes. Tell me, what do you imagine will happen in the schools when such a scenario is played out? Automatically, the poor will be shunned, or worse, made fun of, while the rich will be pandered to by their peers, maybe even their teachers, perhaps in the hopes of riding on their coat-tails? It's not an intended outcome, but certainly one that will naturally occur if school uniforms are no longer required.

in the past like the 1980s, since everyone had to wear the same school uniforms, we can spot the "richer" kids by the Shoes they wear.. like the more common ones wore China branded "Panda" white shoes, for like $5 or so, while those wearing the more expensive "BM2000" would draw attention with like ""woah..." and the other difference is in the pencils, regular kids use Pencils that need to be sharpened with like 10cents sharpeners and stand near the waste paper basket to let the pencil shavings drop inside. Richer kids will whip out their Desktop Sharpers with a rotating lever to sharpen, which the top of the line will take out their $6 PENTEL SHAKER Mechanical pencils and shake it loudly in class to show off their latest pencil. in the canteen, the RICHER Kids will Hang around the drinks Stall with 60 cents YAKAULT or VITAGEN and drink bottles after bottles of it. while the poorer students will pay 10cents for a cup of cold cordial drink like "orange" or barley syrup with water. or watered down soya bean milk. Poorer students walk home from school or take public bus, Richer students have parents who can afford to pay for monthly school bus fees or even drive to school to fetch their kids. so while uniforms try to unite the students, the students know by look, who is from the richer familes, or have richer parents.

Well I for one will agree that school uniforms should be done away with. Then again I don't see how the current uniforms should take precedent over religious clothing or why can't they be worn together? Schools should instead place a modest dress code for all students to abide by rather than a compulsory uniform. Students would regardless of status or wealth be separated into different cliques and groups anyways.

I followed this conversation and I have a question: Although in our grandparents or parents time, maybe the income to housing ratio is relatively similar. However it’s also mentioned in this talk that we CANNOT expect the same GDP growth anymore. So can we say that in this generation since we will not expect high GDP growth and we have high population growth, job competition AND housing to income ratio stays relatively the same while at the same time housing sizes decreased rapidly. The wealth accumulated by our grandparents generation is passed to NEW citizens. Question 2) can this generation of Singaporean then proclaim that we are WORSE off compared to our grandparents and parents generation? Considering the fact that they were in the developing ERA and we are actually WORSE off. MOREOVER, the housing size shrink extremely a lot as well. So MOM, HDB and ICA should reconsider their positions. DECISIVELY and SWIFTLY before all the accumulated trust crash? I love the effort by DPM Wong. However looking at this video the second time, together with all the consolidated points allowed me to reason why this generations is feeling what they are feeling.

The gahmen has forgotten who are the ones that help built Singapore. There should be a distinct difference between local born citizens and new citizens. The new citizens are benefitting at the expense of locals and this is extremely unfair. And why are locals serving national service? to defend the foreigners? Many new citizens are excuse from NS by the way. This to me is absolute nonsense and the hugh influx of foreigners will corrode our SG identity. So much contradiction that the SG gahmen did not addressed. The pappy gahmen is just a bunch of minister betraying their own local born citizens for their own benefits and wasting tax payers money.

Rather than giving air to such a petty issue, Lawrence must pursue the evitable losses of investment by govt linked boards from Lehman Brothers mainly by the PAP TCs to the most recent FTX by Temasek throughout the last 20 years because they obtain national funding and the culprits must be held accountable. To allow this pattern of simply doing nothing but internal checks and investigation is not enough to deter the wily individuals in those organisation from planning more raids on the national treasury and they are confident they will get away lightly with it because the politicians that approve those fund transfers will have more to lose besides credibility and thus they are emboldened knowing very well power will try to cover up for them as much as possible and simply gloss over the whole matter. You cannot expect to keep increasing never ending cycles of taxes, transport fares and levies just to make up for the losses due to the irresponsible decision of a few without reprisal. Singapore should learn well from Anwar's Reformasi victory because even the Singapore dollar quickly lost value the moment his leadership was announced.

Muslims are always asked to accommodate and not demand, why not tell the so called 'others' to be inclusive of the muslims who are the foundation of Singapore society? Tell the foreigners that are invited to learn the Singapore origins and cultures and accept them instead? I do not believe if you ask any singaporean Indian, Chinese and mix that you had studied together in school and are neighbours of about hijab then they would be 'reserved' of the hijab muslim women. It's just strange that the muslim women's rights to their own dress code and choice to dress in accordance to their belief which is an identity to them and blood to bone are subjected to the feelings of other stakeholders of other religions as said in parliament. When muslims feel they are discriminated, they are reminded not to demand their rights. I could never understand the PAP playing with these words.

Perhaps everything in society needs to be questioned from now on. Like the recent repeal of 377A. A lot of our norms are adaptations of our past colonisers. Singapore should look at rulers who have done better. Society has become - Divided over wealth. We need to tweak the income tax rates of our country in proportion to wealth, NOT by set stratas that benefit the rich more and squeeze the middle class - Divided over race/religion. We need to have all religious leaders to discuss issues more frequently and share this openly with the public.

  • @jamesl2590

You sure? There are religions that are fundamentally at odds with one another for millennia. Unless you are able to invite that "higher dimension authority" down to earth to be the judge / mediator on red-lines, no religious party will be satisfied with the discussion flow and outcome. Who should be the public mediator of those issues? It will never be fair outcome for all participants and will certainly be inconclusive. The best scenario, is the current one, whereby each party can privately operate within their own religious community without infringing on others, and such religious matters are not central to our politics. The government should stay out of religion as much as possible and must ensure that public policy formulation process is non-discriminative.

  • @jamesl2590

Given the lack/inability to set capital controls, you will see significant outflows with major changes to wealth taxes. The rich will run out of Singapore or stay but move most of their reserves overseas, circumventing the wealth tax. In this new scenario, the middle class will die or bear the brunt as the "New upper class". In your current scenario, middle class are squeezed. Would you pick the new scenario whereby middle class are worse off or the current scenario whereby at least the middle class gets some "bread crumbs"? The government has to make the difficult choice of finding the balance in taxation.

How do you know what your knowledge of all religions that exists is correct? How do you know your understanding of the clashes are correct? The very knowledge we have today is clearly one based on that set up by Western ideas. All I’m saying is that now all the electrd religious leaders come forth and share their views. And then let the public question if there is any misunderstandings. It will be time-consuming, but a worthwhile dialogue I feel. With regards to your second predicted outlook, it could be possible but could also be slightly exaggerated. Believer says their higher order said no. Non-believers explain their perspective from a mortal standpoint. The discussion goes nowhere if both sides are not open to changing their fundamental beliefs (if that higher order exists and said so?). Also, what and who could possibly be rightfully misunderstood? Ultimately, I am not against such discussion taking place. It can be citizen initiative. You can always organise one. But it is neither in the interest nor within the capability of a neutral government/public institution to do so, given the limited outcome of such dialogue. Its just not a priority as you are free to practise anything you want. Not unless you intend to force your perceptions upon others.

There are so many examples of countries with runaway inflation and massive currency devaluation. One of the reason for why Singapore's currency strength can be maintained is due to capital inflow from foreign investors/high net worth individuals attracted by our low tax rates relative to the rest of the world. This is not a philosophy. This is obvious math and observed in real world. In principle, I too agree that the rich ought to pay more in taxes. But you don't get anything if they leave. Definitely more divided as shown be steady decline in voters support for PAP. The last GE in 2020 showed a 10% drop in support for PAP resulting in a loss of a 2nd GRC. The previous GE in 2016 was a "fluke" because LKY passed away in 2015. Many voters voted for PAP to "thank" him. The steady decline resume in 2020. A further drops of around 10% can see support for PAP going below 50%. This will be a turning point, a "game changer". It will confirm that regime change is in the cards.

I just hope it wont happen before i die.. if the fools want a new party to lead Singapore.. sure i hope i am 70 or 80 by then and wont be ard longer to see it.. i dun want Singapore to be split over mulitple parties fighting over control like Malaysia...
