I'm surprised no one mentioned that if you whistle indoors, you'll lose all your money. I'd never heard of that outside of Russia. In the US we sometimes whistle while we work, often indoors!

I think the black cat is universal. That's also superstitious here in my country.

I've noticed this, especially in the metro with the rubbing of statues. Very interesting traditions. Another nice quirk that sets Russians apart from others :)))

It's funny, because a black cat is more likely to cross your path because they are the most common color, and they tend to be more sociable.

Isn’t there also a russian superstition, that you don‘t shake hands under the door? In Europe we also have a lot of superstition, when a black cat crosses your way it means bad luck. Walking underneath a ladder is bad luck (makes sense, because things can fall down) Number 13 is bad luck. And when you say something bad can happen, you touch wood, to preven it from happening. And a broken mirror means 7 sears of bad luck.

In east Asian countries, lots of superstitions are based on homonyms (words pronounced the same but with different meaning)... like the the number "four" is pronounced the same as "death" in Chinese (si), Japanese (shi) and Korean (sa), so many people are superstitious about the number 4. In Japanese the number "nine" is pronounced the same as "suffering" (ku), with the same result. Since it's hard to avoid numbers, each of these words have variations to avoid the "unlucky" pronunciation (in order from above: su, yon, net, kyu). Like all superstitions, many people don't care personally, but are more often than not careful not to offend others that do.

I'm Russian but I live in Italy and I can say that italian people are no less supersticous than Russians...It was intersting to know that It wasnt the number 13 but 17 that brings bad luck :) All in all, superstitions are a part of any culture and can sell more about the history and traditions...So, I find them very intersting...

I'm Russian but I'm not very superstitious (mostly because I don't know many of them). There's some actions I do almost automatically or don't think about why does it work like this ("cross fingers" when sth bad happens or looking in the mirror when I forgot sth).

Yes I believe Russians are super super super superstitious. I count about 64 superstitious about them . is not bad , we are humans , body and spirit so we always believe in something.

Да, четное количество цветов никто никогда не дарит в целом, считается, что это к смерти. А желтые цветы обычно не дарят девушкам - считается, что это к измене.
