Are Road Flares Hot Enough To Melt STEEL?

In this video, we are testing how hot emergency road flares get and if they can burn or melt candles, wood, pennies, aluminum, steel, and a wrench.

The reason why the sheet of steel got damaged way easier than the wrench is because they are clearly two different kinds of steel. The sheet is designed to be reshaped while the wrench is designed to keep it's shape as the wrench is way more hardened overall.

@@scoutmaster33 steel itself is an alloy of Iron and other metals in different ratios depending on the type of steel needed. OP was saying that the wrench and the sheet are 2 different types of steel which is 100% true as the steel alloy used for the wrench is designed to be more rigid and stronger than the steel alloy that comprises the sheet of steel as that is typically used for welding and reshaping.

Wrenches are usually made of chro-moly or chrome-vanadium steel. Which can be(and always are for tool purposes) heat treated to about 40 Rockwell hardness. Hardness doesn’t determine the melting point, boiling point, etc. That is determined by the composition of the alloy itself, spring steels, like what is found in a truck leaf spring get red hot at about 1600°F and once at that temperature it rearranges the structure of the steel, reducing it from a martensite, or bainite (very hardened steel) to regular untreated steel, which is known as “normalizing”

Probably nothing or not much. Depends on how much water is inside a flare which I doubt is much. They work by exciting the water molecules in food. Why stuff like a veggie heats faster ... mostly water. Sure if In long enough, it may ignite ... but I dunno if would only say 30 seconds or a minute ...

  • @deltab9768

There are other polar molecules besides H2O. It might uniformly heat until the whole thing is like 5 degrees below it's ignition point. Maybe nothing, maybe it melts out all the fuel (making it weaker), maybe it just lights, but there's a tiny chance it goes boom.

I used to make fire starters from used road flare remnants. cut it down to 2 or 3" chunks, tape over the ends with some paper tape, and embed wooden matches in the end. road flare composition is hot enough to even start wet wood (1450 °C, 2650 °F), and it has a known burn rate. 3" is about 5 minutes of burn time.
