this is making me realize we got lucky last time, left my laptop and everything out in the room all day for 7 days in a row (locked up passports though), nothing got stolen. our maids were really great though and I think it is partially because we left tips for them every day and also brought a checked bag worth of goodies for the Cuban people and left a lot of it in our room for the maids, and gave away our leftovers on our last day.

Thanks for your videos! Great info. I'm also a light traveler and careful about my stuff. I do the same things you noted. As an extra safety measure, I bring dog bells. I hang them on the door so that when we're asleep, nobody's getting a jump on us. That being said, I've never had an issue with safety or stolen items in Cuba. Ever.

We just got back from cayo Guilerrmo about 2 weeks ago. The mini bar guy would show up at random times and just walk right in our room. You can never be sure no one else will be in your room. Also, our key card lock was hit or miss, sometimes we couldn't get in our room and sometimes the door wouldn't even lock. We were at Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo, which we thought was supposed to be a good resort.

Grate video again. I travel light I only take what I need. I’m going to get away I don’t need a lot beach cold beer and sun. I keep my room clean leave them a nice tip everyday and your safe

Good advice Mike. I never leave anything out. I even pack away my toiletries/makeup everyday. Once had a housekeeper steal a lipstick. That is the only thing that has ever gone missing in Cuba. I hope you had a great time at the Valentin.

Great tips, not only applicable to Cuba, but anywhere you travel (even in Canada). Have yet to have anything go missing in all my trips to Cuba, but have had multiple items disappear from Canadian Hotels over the years.

Hi Mike, we were once accused at the Rio del sol Luna holguin for stealing a towel from the room. We were already in the bus waiting to go to the airport. I told them to go through my luggage to find it. They wanted $ 20.00 for the towel. I told them we brought towels and don’t need any.Finally they let us go. Never will go back to that place

Wow!! That’s why I never take a beach towel from my room, it seems they can go missing to easily.

We usually use the safe and haven't had any issues, but I do like the lock idea , esp for my purse ( in the safe) which has everything like passports etc in it, for an extra fail safe. Never have had an issue yet at a resort, but know they happen so still always do the typical drawer checks etc and have the room tiday as you do with the bedding checks before leaving. . But also , always like to meet the maid etc as well as whoever may be deliverying water etc to the room. We have always had the issue with the airport. Cologne/perfume seems to be a thing, that's what has been taken from us too , a couple of times now, so try to do carry-on/purse for anything like that if possible or just not bring it. Duely noted as well if we decide to visit Varadero.

I don't normally complain. I did lose my Phone from my room. We went to the pool and I left my phone on the TV Stand. Someone brought a Bottle of Water and left it on the TV Stand when I was gone from 4 to 6pm and my phone was gone. A big of donations was missing as well. I contact security and 3 days later my phone was returned. I didn't ask questions I just said thank you and that was the end of it. I moved a ceiling tile and hide all my valuables in the ceiling now. I couldnt believe I got my phone back but I make sure I hide everything now. This was last week at Memories Flemenco. I am currently at Grand Muthu Imperial and no problem. My stuff is well hidden. Lesson learned. But my vacation was still amazing.

Hey Mike, as always, great info. I'm the same way, I always keep everything in my luggage and keep them locked up. Better safe than sorry. Good piece of advice for 1st timers...if you leave it on the bed, it's considered a gift and will be taken with much appreciation 😊

Great video Mike just saying I’ve been to Cuba eight times in the last year to the same resort and never lost or had anything stolen from me if anything I give half my stuff away I usually go with a 50 lb suitcase and when I leave it weighs like 20 lbs lol. Never had an issue in Cuba Nice video very informative cheers buddy keep up the great work

Canadian government just issued a travel advisory for Cuba. There has been an increase in pick pockets and scams due to a shortage of food and medicine. Violent crime, though, is very rare.

I started travel to Cuba in 1989. Been back many times. I lock my wallet, passport and i-pad in the safe. The housekeepers have always been honest. I bring chocolate bars and tip every day. On my last day at a resort 6 years ago, I looked for my pants, gone. I reported them missing. My housekeeper had the day off and her replacement helped herself to my pants. She claimed I had left them at the bottom of my bed. I only brought one pair so they had to return my pants. I travel light, 2 dresses, 1 pair of shorts, 2 tops and long pants for travel. My regular housekeeper was honest, her replacement was not. Remember not to leave anything at the bottom of your bed or beds.

Sometimes have seen lemons!!! I doubt you find them!!! But maybe!!! I don’t know if you can legally bring them into the country!!! Google it!!! Good luck

nice tips. however I don't see how the locks on your backpacks will be effective. because the material is maliable, can't you just unzip the backpack still with the locks on?

Hey Mike. Random question. Do you know if the workers get to keep there gifts? I brought a suitcase full of dollarstore items. Toys, make up, advil lots of Club House spices. A ton of good random items. I make bags up worth 40 / 50 dollars each and hand out to random workers. The next day (Today) all the spices I gave him as a gift were on the Buffet fish station. He didn't speak english. I asked another worker if they can keep there gifts and he said No. I hope the workers keep there gift items. I'm sadden by this if the answer is No.

I can answer that, been to Cuba a zillion times, and I've been blessed with a few dear friends. Here's how it works with items such as you described (clubhouse spices, advil, etc. ). These items are typically "traded" back to the resort management for other non-material "benefits" to be given to the employee who received the goods. An example, the spices gifted to the worker is then traded to management. Management then uses the spices at the buffet for a better dining experience for all the resort customers. The worker would receive in return : an extra day off; or a an opportunity at a better set of shifts (I.e. working days, not nights), etc. Same for the Advil, it will be traded to Management for use at the Medical office for dispensing to vacationers as required, while the worker who traded the gift receives an extra day off, or a better shift, etc. Think of it as an informal policy that is encouraged by management . Resort Management will NEVER openly admit to this arrangement due to the optics. Workers are reluctant to share this "barter system" with guest b/c they don't want to appear ungrateful. Hope this helps

I have not heard good things about the resort and now im questioning how im gonna go enjoy the beach when I have to worry about my passport and cash because i thought the safe was... welll safe!!?

I gess you are a control freak. And it is fine. When I go to Cuba, I bring clothes I Don't wear anymore. Phone goes in the safe and I change the code every 2 days. No jewels, since I am a always in the Ocean and Don't want to attract fish. I bring remnant of perfume, a couple, more for my room than wearing it. Bugs love me and permume make it worse. When I leave, almost everything exept underwear, shoes and bathing wear stays in Cuba. Sunscreen, Tylenol, all non prescribe meds go to gardeners. In fact most of my stuff is given to gardeners.
