I don’t know about anyone else but the Sevii isles for me as a kid were always fun. I always likened them to the Kanto postgame in GSC. I would rearrange my whole team with Jhoto Pokémon not to mention the Islands are like their own region with events, story and rematches for the whole elite 4 with updated teams. I disagree with the Sevii Isles slander. Yours sincerely a grumpy 30 year old Pokemon veteran
You can still use Moltres against the Elite Four on your first run in FR/LG. You gain access to the first three of the Sevii Isles after beating Blaine and getting your 7th badge, and Mt. Ember is on One Island with nothing to stop you from going there and catching Moltres.

The fact that FRLG actually function and don't have so many mechanics broken alone makes them superior to RB&G. The original games were held together with spit and duct tape and were notoriously buggy. That was the route Pokemon should have took dark and gritty towns with people up to no good

Absolutely. Red and blue is whatever for the most part, but yellow is a beast. For one thing, the availability of Pokemon in yellow is considerably different than either fire red and leaf green. You get all 3 starters, you get Chansey outside of safari zone, you also get Oddish, Bellsprout, Scyther, and Pinsir in one game, lastly lickitung is a repeatable catch, not just a one time trade, same as farfetched. There's also the following Pikachu that gives the experience itself a lot more personality, and the Pikachu's beach mini game is immediately available in the virtual console version, speaking of which, the VC version has hidden abilities when you transfer to gen 7, and has easier connectivity to newer gens than gen 3. There's also the LRT glitch in rby that allows you to get every Pokemon in the game without trading.

Thee will be a few who have developed a fondness for the problems Gen 1 has and nostalgia but it’s gonna be a pretty small group and this video didn’t really give a good perspective on it tbh, was disappointed
I definitely think they're much better, and the sort of starting point you'd send someone who's never played a Kanto game before. Gen 1 games just have too many problems that are inexcusable, even for its time. You literally can't play through the game without a glitch popping off, because it's that broken. I'm not even talking about MissingNo on Cinnabar Island surfing, I'm talking something that's unavoidable entirely: The Badge Boost Glitch, for example. Whether or not you are aware of it, doesn't change the fact that after getting a single badge, and then having your stats altered in battle by something like Sand-Attack, which happens a lot, you get continuous stat boosts from the badges, making the game glitch in your favour nearly every battle. The amount of broken things like that in Gen 1, making it literally impossible to avoid any in a normal playthrough, is reason enough alone to send someone straight to FireRed. Nevermind the quality of life improvements like a categorized bag and running shoes; being able to actually play the game normally, without anything going wrong, is the best selling point!
I'll admit that Gen1's jankiness kinda has an odd charm to it. But this isn't a contest. FR/LG for sure

@rpgfanatic9719 And? Is that supposed to be a meaningful point? "The game is actually better *because* it's broken" You have 90's kid tinted glasses.
The remake is better. Better balanced moves. Replay trainers and even gives more variety to your battles. The gen 1 games are so flat and broken. It's why I want gen 1 mons to get evos so when we get a re re re re re remake we can have kanto with new mons instead
Red Blue Green Yellow has been outclassed by Fire Red and Leaf Green post game and set up the standard for Rom Games too. Let's Go was too much of Pokémon Go the Game. Still Fire Red and Leaf Green had changed everything in Pokémon in general.
I grew up with gen 1 but FRLG are better in every single conceivable way. They deserve the same sort of recognition RE gets even. I dint think a comparison can even kind of be made.
Depends on the context. Overall gameplay and team building/customization: frlg, for speedruning categories, and glitch showcasing, og's kind of turning a bad thing into a good thing.
The biggest thing I hated in FR/LG was how the fossil pokemon start at level 5, Getting aerodactyl in red and blue is an immediate ass kicking machine despite that he could have a better move set in gen 1

As much as I love gen 3 on the whole, I'll always prefer gen 1 Kanto to gen 3 Kanto (or gen 2 Kanto, or gen 4 Kanto, or gen 7 Kanto lol)
Well... -Improved UI (faster, more organized and detailed), Items becoming much less tedious due to more space and multiple bag slots -Extended battle mechanics (Steel and Dark Types, Special Attack and Defense, Natures, EV/IV, Held Items, Abilities) -Genders, Shiny Pokemon, different Poke Ball types... -Far better move distribution thanks to breeding and move tutors, as well as TMs being easier to obtain -Postgame allows you to have over 230 new Pokemon on your game as well as connectivity with RSE and Colosseum/XD -Elite 4 rematch; VS Seeker for regular trainer rematches; Trainer Hill gives way more battles before and after the main story -Graphics are objectively better, cleaner and more consistent. That "charm" from some sprites was just artists being better than others -Breeding allows to get more than one "rare" Pokemon such as starters, fossils, Hitmon, Eevee, etc. -Besides Sevii Islands, you also get Fame Check which gives further information from multiple important characters -Other nice bonuses like Sevii Island minigames, Braggart and team stickers on Trainer Card, E-Reader content (for those 3 fellas who used it) Other than music (which is very subjective) and maybe Moltres not being in Victory Road (but rather on its own place, which makes it feel more like the other birds), I don't see how RGBY are "superior" in any way. It also lacked Ribbons, Contests and a Day/Night cycle, but for being the first remakes they did things pretty well.
Keep up the awesome work and videos love the video
while overall i do prefer the gen 3 polish, the gen 1 music is way better. GB chiptunes >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GBA trying to sound like real orchestra
Comparing Gen 1 and the Gen 3 remakes is like comparing apples & oranges. You can’t, and you shouldn’t because it’s an unfair comparison. Without Gen 1, you wouldn’t have the franchise as a whole. The Gen 3 remakes definitely adds some quality of life improvements and mechanics from R/S/E, but that doesn’t mean that it invalidates Gen 1. Both are fun for their own reasons, and both are still great to play to this day.

That is a complete cope, you are just incapable of admitting that your oh so precious gen 1 is worse than FRLG.
I would say it kind of depends on what you’re looking for. As someone who grew up with the series, I’m more likely to go back to Gen 1. I do think if you’re looking to complete the original pokedex, it’s better to do it in Gen 1. The original sprites are iconic and look more like monsters than the remakes do. Also, if you’re looking to battle friends noncompetively, I’d do Gen 1 as well. I like the idea of DV and the team you raised being stronger than wild Pokémon so you don’t have to worry about breeding or anything to get the right EV/ IVs, plus you can plug into Pokémon stadium. If you want a regular run through or nuzlocke, I’d probably do the remakes. It looks better, has less weird mechanics (99% crit moves), and there are some quality of life changes that do make a difference.
If red and blue had gold and silvers mechanics they'd be perfect games
When you talked about how in the original games, how when you defeat all of the trainers, it feels like there is nothing left to do and the game is left in “limbo” like you said… I did not like this at all when I was a kid, so I actually felt more comfortable resetting the game and starting over rather than keeping it like that
Are Blue and Red better? From a mechanical standpoint, no. Looking at movesets, no. (Although it was fun having a 90% accurate Blizzard.) But to me, FireRed and LeafGreen seem... sterile? Not only with the cleaned up visuals, but they also feel unambitious compared to Ruby and Sapphire. No clock, no secret bases, no team battles that I can remember, and additionally no returning day/night feature from Gold & Silver. I am also not a fan of the music, in particular with how incohesive the trainer and boss themes sound.
I had nostalgia glasses on for Red/Blue/Yellow thinking I liked them over FR/LG. But man last year I started on a living dex replayed all of the games back to back starting with Gen 1 and MAN is Gen 1 and 2 brutal to play nowadays. If I was doing it for fun I wouldn't ever touch anything before Gen 3 again, unless maybe for some good ROM hacks.
I remember I was SO pissed when I found out FRLG didn't reference Johto so much. One example: the Network Machine in One Island specifically talks about "Kanto and Hoenn", and nothing else. I understand why: there was no way to connect FRLG to Gen II games, but still it sounded off to me. I can't actually remember a single NPC that talks about something involving Johto (I may be wrong here tho) except for Gideon. At least we had Johto's tracks in the post-game Sevii Islands.
Literally the only thing for me that makes a case for RBY is the EXP all with just how much objectively better FRLG are without even mentioning the sheer amount of Gen 1 jank that you don’t have to deal with
Well it's the very first game. lol They won't think about any balancing changes just yet until any future gen (gen 2) comes out.
3 upload in a row!!! ❤❤❤
I absolutely loved FRLG when they came out, but I prefer RBY now. Sure, RBY have their problems, but any drawbacks are pretty exaggerated in the fandom. FRLG just feels like rearranged scraps of RSE. Mystic Umbreon was right to point out that the graphic design is virtually identical between the games. The sound too is underwhelming, given how impressive some GBA games sound (even if GBA sound has a certain irritating scratchiness to them). RBY did a much better job utilizing the Gameboy’s limited sound pallet. The contrast afforded by the limitations tend to make battle themes in particular more dynamic. On the whole, FRLG feel kind of phoned in. Not to say they’re bad, but they just feel basic, and the start of GameFreak doing the bare minimum. Compare that to RBY where it’s obvious they pushed the cartridge to its limits. I just honestly feel like they should have just made new games instead of remaking old ones. It would have made the GBA generation a little more special.
Fire Red and Leaf Green win for me on the grounds that they were post the changes that stopped psychic from being unstoppable
Some moves worked better in Gen 1 (Slash / Karate Chop) making it much easier to raise certain Pokémon. Some moves got worse by changing type causing the Pokémon that learned them to become mediocre till much later gens. Some moves stayed about the same despite changing typing.

Mystic Umbreon you should do top ten Pokemon city themes.
Fixing the extremely flawed combat in gen 1 makes FR/LG objectively easier. The combat is disgusting in Gen 1 especially psychic types, special stat, and the speed based crit system. The vs seeker, held items and abilities, better exp share, the bag/items being better, and sevii islands are also good reasons.
One thing I can say is that both versions allow the player to experience Kanto in completely different way. Gen 1 has so many unique quirks that just the fact of transitioning to gen 3 battle mechanics drastically changes how you might play the game from team building perspective. This alone completely changes how a player aproaches the game. The crit mechanic of gen 1 alone is a huge game changer, making Pokemon like Raticate and Persian early/mid game menaces in gen 1, while in gen 3, you'll probably pass on them.
Great video 😊😊😊
Imma level with you. I dont like Fire Red and Leaf Green. Prefered the originals to that. That being said I think it is nostalgia. Because I do not like any gen 1 remakes outside the originals. Most things people dont like, i enjoy deeply. Mainly those sprites. They just had so much character to them. And it is so true hoe similar it felt to hoenn. It just didnt feel like Kanto too me. It just felt like a Hoenn reskin
one of my biggest things is that the music in Gen 1 Kanto is light years better. To me, most the highs of the music are more impactful in the Gen 1 Kanto and it just feels almost like they butchered the music when I go back and try to play FR/LG
Red, Blue, and Yellow we're great at the time, but looking back at it shows how unbalanced the games we're compared to newer games. Going over how Red, Blue, and Yellow battling mechanics could be it's own video.
I liked what you said about how remakes should try to reimagine the games with the knowledge of other aspects happening in the Pokémon world like new Pokemon evolutions, near by regions, new characters. Basically treat the like remakes, rather than just taking the safe route.
i agree - even if i can't put my finger on why. interesting food for thought
I grew up with pokemon Fire Red instead of the originals
If we’re strictly talking remakes then it’d go: hg/ss, fr/lg, bd/sp. remakes are great but the nostalgia from the originals can never be matched. I remember as a kid I was always playing the original games for kanto and johto
Gen 2 was better than gen 3 in most ways, especially comparing gold to ruby. The moving sprites, day and night cycle, etc. But, gen 1? Not at all.
I know this is random, but I would love to see a video where ash managed to catch a pokemon of each typer per region. If a pokemon has a type combo like palpitate being water and ground then that would count for his water and ground type pokemon.
As a kid it was extremely fun putting hours in to beat the original red and blue and bragging to friends that i did it. Of course the remakes are better but they will never be able to replace the nostalgic feeling of accomplishment when being crowned champion and capturing mewtwo like in the originals. Red and blue are the reason we have everything that we have now and that itself puts it on tier nonother games can match.
I had and played the original when it first came out , actually the reason I bought a gameboy. I got red a very difficult decision for a 10 year old . Now that I am middle age father the fire red and leaf green are amazing remakes and I could only infants playing something like that back then. All in all the remakes are so much better.
I do like the interconnectivity of the Gen 3 games, such as being able to beat the Kanto Elite 4 with my Swampert from Sapphire, Jirachi from Channel, Ho-oh from Colosseum and Lugia from XD. Gen 3 Kanto felt like it was part of a wider Pokémon world (minus Johto 😅)
I remember leaf green was my first ever purchase for myself along with a nintendo ds and i never regretted that. I also played red the most of any game probably. But for me fr/lg was definitely better. They just expanded everything that made the original fun. 😊
Not gonna lie, there's a lot of fun things about gen 1 that you may miss if you don't play it: Like Beedrill-type moves being good And the player getting bolt-beam + Rock Slide for free Mimic letting you choose which move you copy Fire not resisting Ice Ponyta and Magmar being available before Blaine instead of after Crits depending on base Speed
I liked Fire Red/Leaf Green but in my opinion, they could have done more with them. They did add the lackluster Sevii Islands so it's not a strict beat-for-beat remake. Gen 2 for all its faults had an impressive amount of content, having two regions. If they could do it with technology back then, they could do it in Gen 3 too. Imagine visiting Johto as Kanto's post game. It would even fit the concept of GSC being a sequel of Gen 1 as intended. It would also add Gen 2 'mons in Gen 3 in a less awkward way. But even if we don't go that wild with it, still, the game deserved a better post game than that awkward addition of Sevii islands right before the 8th badge. I mean that's not even post game.
In my college everyone started with FRLG meanwhile i started with RBY
I’d say Red and Blue were more adventure and research based games to learn about the Pokémon, same with Gold and Silver learning about eggs, also day and night Pokémon and evolution. The discoveries were amazing!
Gen 3 is fine, but ive played both and FrLg dont give me any real reason to play them over the ogs.
Red and blue will forever be the best with how broken and easy it is to manipulate the game.
In my opinion, Firered & Leafgreen is not only the superior experience of Kanto, but I think it's the best remake out of all the Pokemon remakes. It keep what made the original special, but added features, content & improved many ways to make up the big flaws and combined with the added Gen. 3 mechanics, than you have one heck of an great game. It doesn't have the obnoxious level curve, lack any Pokemon variety nor the sub plot going nowhere that Heartgold & Soulsilver didn't fixed or added any broken mechanics to make the battles unbalanced like Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire has with Megas. It's just an simple, well balanced & polished game that can be compelling & challenging without any new gimmicks breaking the game. It's also my introduction into the Pokemon games. Which is not bad at all. I tried playing the original on Game Boy. But boy it was rough and broken.
Gen 1 easily. Its my childhood. Its the start. Its got all the nostalgia
My brother played red but i didn't play until leaf green. It was his gb pocket after all. I am fine to have waited though because green is my favorite color.
I feel like the gitch Pokémon and glitch city makes the originals feel endless.
1:45 steal claw 😂😂😂
Nothing speaks for gen1 except from nostalgia...
Pokémon Blue might be the best game EVER
Honestly i felt like FRLG felt wayyyy different than RSE. Hell even emerald feels different than the other 2 Hoenn games. I grew up playing RBY in the late 90s but I'll always prefer gen 3 Kanto. That said my best childhood memories were in gen 1, being five years old and getting lost in that world. Five year old me spent 1 month getting though rock tunnel. Just very involved. Also side note i love the sevii islands. Honestly when i had RSE, FR and XD gale of darkness with a gamecube and access to two gameboys and a link cable it was fun af. Idk i got really nostalgic back in 2013 and tried to complete my gen 3 dex. Life gets in the way tho. Now i just play gen 3 OU shoutout to jimothy cool lol

I think it depends on wether you like the Original or the more balanced remakes and how I would rank the remakes 1, Heartgold and soulSilver 2, Firered and Leafgreen 3, Omega Ruby and Alpha Saphire 4, Brilliant diamond and Shining Pearl.
I play both regularly. Both great.
Every point brought up about FRLG being too similar to RSE are exactly why I enjoyed them so much. I cannot understand why anyone would remotely enjoy the 1st gen over the remakes unless they actually grew up with them. I'm saying that as a person that played every pokemon game in my region upon release unil gen 6
FR/LG are objectively better games, but for me nostalgia wins out. If I'm looking for the single best gameplay experience I'll play SS/HG, but for me atleast, Kanto doesn't really hit the same in color. I think had FR/LG been made alongside SS/HG with the special split and even better movesets, it would truly be a perfect remake.
No
If you put it from that perspective I wonder if this is what the Paper Mario the thousand year door remake is going to look like compared to the original gamecube version released nearly 20 years ago that I never got to play due to me being a 6 year old only interested in pokemon games and didn’t own a GameCube until the special edition for xd gale of darkness one came out and the only two games I played on it was that and smash bros melee and I was around 7 or 8 years old when I started playing the GameCube and my method of training pokemon and team building and a bunch of other things have evolved since then anyway back on my main point the thousand year door on the GameCube was a great game but the biggest complaint was the backtracking and while the remake didn’t remove the backtracking entirely they definitely made it more bearable and like you said the graphics have definitely evolved since then but aside from a few new boss fights and an art gallery and soundtrack list they didn’t add much to differentiate between the original except make the backtracking easier and I’m wondering if people are going to even remember the original GameCube version even existed even by Paper Mario veterans after a while
Am I the only one who loved the sevi islands story?
Love them both, but firered and LeafGreen are a bit better I think, but love them both, still play them both.
Realistically I think the only pokemon games that might've actually improved/replaced the original is maybe Heart Gold and Soul Silver
Objectively, FR and LG are better. But the originals have a a special je ne sais quoi. The music feels better in the older versions, specially stuff like Lavender Town and the original route 1 music. Also, glitches are by this point a part of the game, especially missingno, mew and the oak battle and they’re gone from gen3. And also, sometimes Gen3 feels too “bland”. I’ve never had this feeling with gen1.
I started with yellow and I'm not going back there. FRLG is the way to go.
I can't put my finger on it. But I found something off about FR/LG. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them. But it just was missing something. They weren't SS/HG level, but they were still good (lightyears better than the slop that is BD/SP).
That depends. Do you prefer a game held together by paper clips and chewed up gum? Or do you want a polished remake that is stable through the end.
Fire red and leaf green got lit champion theme
LeafGreen was my first pokemon game but diamond was my first true "i know what I'm doing now" pokemon game. I probably got lost in leafgreen for days at points lol but platinum was my fav one. I dropped off of pokemon before gen 5 landed and didn't come back til the switch so platinum is like the magnum opus of 2D pokemon to me. Only true flaws in my eyes are hms and lack of fire types
Dam KZread not telling me u make a video
I wish i had Pokémon Fire Red / Leaf Green.
Well i played the 4 version semi recently. Had alot more fun with the original
FRLG are better than Gen 1 minus Yellow in every single way.
0:10 I think you meant the other way around
I think Gen 1 is the more interesting game, but FR/LG are better Pokémon games. I kinda prefer the uniqueness of the first Pokémon games. It plays more like a normal jrpg, with normal type moves being your average "attack" command, and other type moves being more like "magic".
Sad gen 4 never got a remake
Red and blue are better because of badge boost glitch and because I can sub an onix for a water stone in the evolution process of those stone evos
Yes, they absolutely are, tbh. A true case of soul vs soulless
FR LG are far better. I went back to blu recently and couldn't enjoy it as much. The remakes fixed just about everything. Having gens 2 and 3 pokémon available made it so much greater too. Same for the sevii islands
No, unless you have your nostalgia googles on tight enough to restrict basic brain activity
FRLG is still the best way to enjoy gen 1.
Gyarados was a bad example for a Pokemon that got better because of an ability. Intimidate is awesome, but the single special stat made Gyarados wayyyyy better in Gen 1
For me their about the same in that starting with Charmander sucks in all 4 games and only Bulbasaur it worth using but In Leaf Green/Fire Red Squirtle can actually be used against Misty and not be totally useless since in those 2 remakes it learns Bite a DARKNESS move and most of Misty's Pokemon are park Psychic based so Bite could easily beat her Pokemon in 1 hit if your not going to use Bulbasaur against hers.
Tell me my Charizard with Swords Dance+Earthquake+BodySlam+Flamethrower has a problem lmao
Apart from the Switch remakes, all of them are better than the original games
