Are Pet Youtubers Irresponsible?

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video I'm going to discuss the difficult decision I recently made to re-home some of my animals, and the reasons behind this decision. After discussing my personal situation, I dive into the subject of "Pettube" and discuss how being a pet KZreadr has influenced my decision to re-home animals and if I think that that being a pet KZreadr can result in people making irresponsible choices with their animals.

This is SUCH an important point of discussion. So many times, it becomes a sort of witch hunt to go after someone that’s rehoming an animal, and it just resorts in the owner feeling guilty and potentially keeping the animal in a (potentially) neglectful situation. I don’t see an issue with people rehoming animals, if it comes down to that animal having a better, happier life elsewhere.

I’m proud of you for making an incredibly diffuse vision to find a “better” home for a beloved pet that you feel you cannot give the absolute best standards of care. It’s not a decision made lightly and you’re being careful with finding them new homes, so if anyone else disagrees that’s their problem. I do believe if you get an animal you should keep it forever. But I also believe that if you find yourself unable to care for it as you believe it deserves, you shouldn’t let your pride, selfishness, or worry about what others think get in the way of that animal receiving the best care it can receive. You totally made the right decision and I can’t wait to see what new content you show with upgrading the animals you keep.

4:27 You said "If you take an animal into your care you are now fully responsible for them". Rehoming them *is* part of being fully responsible for them. Ensuring your animals get the care they need at the quality you want them to have *is* being responsible, regardless of if you are the one doing it or someone else is. Ensuring that you have set yourself up to sustainably care for your pets is extremely important as well. If you can't sustain it, then your pets will just stop getting the care at the level they need, either because of mental or financial issues. Seeing that and making the hard choice to rehome is being a responsible owner. You're putting the pet's needs above your own want to have the pet. Thank you for your transparency, I hope you feel supported by this community!

I'm at the point in my keeping career where I know I can't take anything more in and it sucks, but knowing my current animals have the best life I could give them will always be most important ❤

I love how Jennifer Lynx posted a video about this and got a good amount of backlash for it. Then, most of the popular pet-tubers who were "mentioned" are actually getting rid of many of their pets. LOL, seems she was right. 😂

Jenny also posted videos with hot takes that fueled most of her backlash from viewers - it wasn't due to her dipping from the hobby. She was also an emotional mess and quite frankly, it was for the better she did what she did for the sake of the animals.

Your content is really wonderful. I have wanted to own a reptile for awhile now and your content was one of the encouraging factors to think about actually caring for one. After much research and thought, and with the help of your educational videos I am finally about to own my first reptile, a cute little crested gecko. Thank you so much for your content and I completely understand the things you mentioned in this video. I own a lot of fish so part of the reason I wanted to wait before getting a gecko was because I wanted to make sure my fish had the most optimal set up possible. I have a 40 gallon and a small pond now, and after making sure I can handle the expenses and care for the animals I currently have, I am prepared and excited to bring home my first reptile and design a bioactive enclosure.

I recently was at the vets with my bunnies to get their vaccines and arrived to a full waiting room. We were all waiting for a long while as a result and started talking. Here in Germany where I live vet bills have sky rocketed since covid started. For my bunnies and the checkup of my hamster I payed over 120 Euros while 2021 when I got my bunnies I paid 69 Euros in total, just to give a perspective. Everyone was talking about this, it was tough on all of us and many were unsure whether to get insurance for their animal, if that was a possibilty. I'm also someone who thinks that caring for an animal and getting an animal means I have a life long commitment to that animal. They are my family, whether that be a hamster, a bunny, a cat or a dog or a fish. But I also understand that circumstances can change. Noone could predict just how much vet bills would rise. There were people in that waiting room with old pets that couldn't get an insurance anymore due to their pet's age. They managed to finance their vet bills through a support network my vet has and were taking loans that they would have to pay off later. Everyone in that room loved their animals and wanted the absolute best for them. Sometimes you can't find a good enough compromise to what your pet needs keeping it. And I think it's a lot more selfish to force someone to keep or to keep an animal, even though everyone involved knows that it would do a lot better somewhere else, just to keep up a responsibility that the people with the responsibility are not able to fulfill.

You are doing a fabulous job of being vulnerable, taking accountability and doing the best thing for your animals. No one has a crystal ball. Life can upend everything all at once. Last year on Thanksgiving my son was rushed to emergency brain surgery and we found out he had cancer....out of NO WHERE. We actually STARTED our true "animal room" during his treatment and I work from home, so I have the ability to manage and care for our fur/scaly/gilled and web footed family members. He's doing well now...finished intense chemo & radiation and honestly....while our whole budget, schedule etc. changed the day of his surgery...slowly growing our "jungle room" was something that kept him going. We are now pretty much at capacity and have also switched our focus to upgrades instead of species. I feel you on all of this though and send all the support and good vibes. You're a good person!

@@EmmaLynneSampson I understand completely. We had $4000 in CCL surgeries last year and still not caught up. $250 a month for just the dog and cats. Im building/just built 4 35 gallons (balls and crested, both tall and longs based on species). Tanks alone were $650. Substrate in bulk and bark were at $400-500. Plants $100-200/tank so $500?. Siliconing and foaming dryloking another $200? Not included bulk feeders and trying to save money by breeding things yourself too. It just sucks. Everything has gone up so much and it's just not sustainable. Even vet bills have progressively been increasing

Honestly you shouldnt have to explain yourself, but I understand why you did and why you did what you did, and how you feel with rehoming your reptiles. It sucks that it has to be even a thing you have to do, but you have to do whats best for you and your animals. I think most pettubers including you, are generally great in the care of their animals, but they definitely a few bad people, but there are those bad people in every community you go to. I found you existed quite a few years ago, and never thought you to be one of them. I dont think i could ever be a pettuber because of the drama you mentioned, but its not for everyone. Hopefully anyone that comes here thinks about that before judging. I hope you and your animals continue to prosper and have the best life you can! Much love!!

I feel like there’s still a stigma around rehoming which is sad when most people are only doing it with the animal’s best interest in mind. Lots of people don’t realise how long lived reptiles are compared to something like a hamster so are quick to pass judgement. My number with the exception of my dogs currently stands at 5 snakes and 3 geckos. Would I love more? Heck yeah but my space, income and time means realistically I’m at my limit. People’s living situations change all the time and it can’t always be predicted so tough choices have to be made. Thank you for your transparency.

It’s not always an easy decision, but it can also be the right decision. It’s hard to let go something you have took time to care and enjoy, but when it comes to animal wellbeing choices sometimes have to be made for them. I completely understand from one animal lover to another, and I’ve had friends that had to make those decisions as well but in the end the wellness of both the animal and carer come first. I applaud 👏🏼 and support your message and honesty, it isn’t easy but sometimes the right things aren’t always easy in life; l learned that plenty. I hope you and your pets enjoy your time and life together ✌🏻.

sometimes rehoming is the best for the animal even if it is really hard for the keeper. it's clear that your priority is the quality of life of your pets and that you didn't do this light heartedly in my area too the cost of living has contributed to pet shelters being incredibly over crowded but the ongoing workers rights movement gives me hope that many of the pets might be reunited with their owners at some point or adopted into a new family that might be able to care for them thank you for sharing this with us. it is incredibly vulnerable and was probably not easy to film. i appreciate how open you are with us viewers i wish all the best to you and your small critters regardless of if they still live with you or are off to a new adventure with someone else taking the best possible care of them

I also feel like a huge aspect of it is that the community in itself has shifted from quanitiy to quality of life for individual animals. Back when I got my bearded dragon and ball python the normal size tank that was appropriate was a 40 gallon tank. People could have tons of animals in smaller enclosures and it was widely accepted and no one received hate for it. Nowadays if you have animals in 40 gallon tanks that's seen as animal abuse and you're deemed a neglectful pet owner. The reason I will never own another bearded dragon is because I can't justify putting on in a 40 gallon tank, unless I happened to adopt a special needs or very stunted individual that would thrive in a 40 gallon I wouldn't do it. I had purchased a corn snake at the beginning of 2023 and sadly she escaped but she was going to go into my old 40 gallon tank. I also have a kingsnake who has been in another one of my spare 40 gallon tanks. My ball python has been in a 75 gallon tank but that's biggest tank I own so I know that unless I sold or gave away my other 40 gallon tank for a 4x2x2 tank I cannot get another animal like a bearded dragon uromastyx ball python blue tongue skink or any other animal that requires a 4 foot enclosure. I'm still thinking about getting another corn snake but I haven't yet. We'll see. Some adult corns get large enough to where a 40 gallon tank would also be too small so I guess the only animals I could get that would be something like a leopard gecko or fire skink.

See so many irresponsible owners like this in Facebook groups and what not And yes! Basic supplies are so expensive now, paper and wooden bedding, feeders, it’s crazy

I don't know what the big deal is about it? I think there are plenty of people that would have a better experience with reptiles and amphibians that are already tamed as much as possible by an experienced handler and are healthy adults than ones that are bought as babies at the pet store. I also see a number of hobbyists that trade animals often enough for breeding. Just so the crazies know, those babies are sold, traded, or given away.
