I've been spearheading The Old World at my FLGS, and the first thing I did when gathering the players together was request a gentleman's agreement that we'd add tech in stages. Our first couple games were 1,000 points with infantry, foot characters, and cavalry with no wizards over level 2. Then we did 1,500 points with light monsters of T5 and level 4 foot wizards. Next week we're moving up to 2,000 points with no restrictions. But the entire point was to introduce rules and interactions slowly, and also let us get a feel for how things played as we added them in. All of us agreed that throwing out a T6 level 4 wizard into a 1,500 point game would swing things too hard if the other player didn't know it was hitting the table. Without monster slayer or some other tech it just goes where it wants and does what it wants. But now we know what we're doing a bit we aren't as intimidated by the prospect. Still, I don't think any of us would rock up with 4 of them.

I was at Warhammer world late October (26th) and they had the 40th anniversary parade celebration going on. Lots of old painted miniatures GW showcasing which i didnt think they still owned? Great experience since Im coming from California. Hadn't been to Warhammer World since 2001.

I ran my first tourney ever back in February, and used some of the terrain maps, with round 1 playing Meeting Engagement, round 2 Open Battle, and round 3 champ round doing Command and Control. It was six players, and we all figured it out quickly how rolling off for first choice of map worked. Everyone enjoyed it, and as TO, it felt easy to implement.

I did my first RTT with wood elves this past weekend. Every game had these hilarious unlikely events. A unit of 3 glade guard rolled box cars on their panic check and ran right through the block of glade guard with my level 4 wizard, who then also rolled box cars on their panic test, box cars on their flee movement, and ran right off the board at full strength. But it was fun as hell.

Val we can answer your plate mail question(/example) without the faq. The answer is no you don’t need to be able to equip normal plate to equip magical plate. Beastmen have access to ‘the blackened plate’ (plate armour) but no Beastmen character can equip plate as standard (just heavy armour). They may place restrictions on common magic armour and GW faqs can sometimes be surprising with their direction but it at least gives a precedence.

I know what you're saying and I'm on your team. But I've had some strong suggestions that the harsher reading may be true. Either way - will be resolved in the FAQ from what I understand. Whenever that does decide to drop.

I love to hear about the experiences! It's making me pumped to goto the Richmond open myself. I am curious what your thoughts on a rules....dispute? that came up in an online escalation league I was playing. - When a character declares a challenge, the TOW rulebook just says "while the challenge is ongoing, the participants cannot be attacked by anyone from outside the challenge". What basically happened is that half the league thought that this meant the duel protection lasted the entire round and the other half the league thought that this meant that the if one participant was slain then models later in the initiave order could still jump in and attack. - The orginizer didn't realize this until the third round and I had a game against him and I asked him which way he had wanted to play it (I had played both ways in previous rounds). the Orginizer made a ruling and all hell erupted with people literally refusing to play in the league (amusingly all the people who had this stance were the "duel protection lasts all round" camp). Even now, our group hasn't found a ruling on this one way or another because unlike 8th which was very clear that it lasted all round, TOW took out all the explicit wording and all the references to duration could be read to support both sides.

Attacks are allocated all together during step 1.1 of the combat phase. They are then resolved during steps 1.2 to 1.4, which are repeated for each initiative level. Step 1.1 is explicitly not repeated (see p. 150). Therefore, all models must have allocated their attacks before any attack is resolved, and the challenge participants can never be attacked in the same phase, because they aren't valid target for other models in step 1.1.

Related question: How do people travel internationally with their armies? Surely you don't have them in your checked luggage, right? So in the carry-on luggage?

Actually! I just about always check my armies. I pack them in battlefoam and this past time used a hard case piece of luggage as the exterior case. I then padded with additional bubble wrap to make sure everything was snug. As long as they're not moving around models can't really hurt themselves. The main thing about checking my armies is that I almost always wind up flying direct. So less chance of something going wrong. I've probably flown this way over a dozen times.

If a model is properly supported, it's generally not heavy enough to break itself from gravity alone. But supported means snug as a bug in a rug. My mega-gargant for example was well wrapped and supported on the way there, but more haphazardly packed on the way back, so that was on me.

Great episode. Be interesting to hear about how particular armies did and have a stats deep dive.

Disagree on the rule on magic armours, it doesn't make sense. If we were to restrict to only magical versions of what's available normally to the model, then no beastmen character can ever take the dark plate, no character can ever take the armour of silvered steel, and no character can ever buy any form of armoured helm because no such non-magical item exists in the game. The fact that these items exist probably means the writers intended to copy the old 6-8th ed ruling, where if you can buy any mundane armour, you can then buy any magical armour.

Simply put there's not enough resources to check lists in detail ATM. I think we had 24 players who had 5 great games where they all.most likely got some rules wrong. That's fine. Id rather they play atm

Oh absolutely. I run two units of 5 in my tournament list. Often they just get vaporized.... but when I keep them alive they were absolutely clutch in the end game.

Still early days yet! I'm not sure how good the meta analysis is right now, though as the summer happens we'll have tons more events to form opinions from.

To be Fair, Perth is probably closer to London than the Real part of Australia. Or at least equidistant

Good job on the event and recap. Thanks for all the input on this game and materials for it. This is not a new game but more of a emalgamat of all older editions- with both goods and bads of those editions. - weve been playing some of events ourselves regularly in our local community of 20-30 tournament players here in Poland and i must say to you guys - its not a balanced game in any way- not in a tournaments especially. at 1:38 - youve started to whine about ppl critisizing the game without "painted or played armies" . well thats not going to go anywhere - instead try figureing out more FAQ and rules changing to see and change what's wrong with this chat gpt written edition. PPl with 28-29 years in this hobby , like me, were pointing the flaws youre making since the first print screens surfaced. Dont hate the audience play with it . Because saying to ppl dont bring 3-4 dragon equivalent models to a tournament games wont change a thing - Tomb Kings are a broken army even without taking 2 dragons - just bring a dragon,sfinx, couple of scorpions, snakes, catapult and some blocks and youre set to a easy game - if you take arcane journal army - which, as all journals we banned altogether from tournaments - it takes even higher levels of sillyness - with arise/snakes and scorpions ini tests, bonuses to magic...meh why boether- im going to play 7ed rules with 6ed armybooks like i was doing for the last 15 years. Its very naive to tell ppl not to bringin best options in their armies to a tournament - its either a beer and precel home game or a tournament one- right now im thinking that 40k is for the first time since 2ed the better balanced game with rules written like miles ahead better.

I think you meant to tag 01:39:00. "Chat GPT" written edition is pretty harsh. It's a poorly edited edition (like many before it) but by no means do I think there are fatal errors within it. We've been pointing to the flaws too, if you've been watching. We just don't think there's enough bad to outweigh the tremendous fun to be had getting out and playing. IF the game doesn't match your own tastes and preferences, that's fine. I genuinely don't care if you prefer to play 3rd, or 7th, or WAP or whatever floats your boat. Go nuts. We're excited to play Old World and to play it at events with other people excited to play Old World at events. You also very clearly misunderstood what Rob said - he said don't bring a wall of T6 to a friendly or learning game as it's a lot to handle. Of course if your friends are into playing into the hardest lists (like I am) then go for it. We also very clearly said that the simple reality is that Old World is rapidly becoming a T6 oriented meta. If you're going to play in events, you better have an answer for how you're going to deal with T6 and magic at a minimum. I think you just heard what you wanted to hear and jumped to conclusions about our "naivety". If you want to be mad about tomb kings, that's fine. But Tomb Kings didn't win the event, and based on the vibes in the room, they certainly didn't ruin it either. So yeah. They're good. Maybe too good. But it's early, and I trust that GW will respond in time with patches to change how the game works now that it's truly being playtested to its limits. Also mad respect to Poland. You guys always bring incredible teams and players to tabletop events. I'm sure Old World will be no different.
