Are 'Old School' Fragrances Still Good?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Old School Fragrances like Dior Eau Sauvage, Creed Bois Du Portugal, Guerlain Vetiver and Aqua Di Parma Colonia sometimes get accused of smelling dated. In this video George from the Fragrance Apprentice joins me to discuss whether these old school fragrances are 'still good'!

Guerlain Vetiver has grown on me for the past year tremendously, nowadays when I wear it I cant stop sniffing my arms all the time 😁, its hypnotizing. In my opinion, this is the greatest vetiver ever in designers game. Grey Vetiver is great also, but it lacks the depth and the manliness of Guerlain's. Looking forward to try some niche vetiver fragrances.

I am 44 year old. Grew up around Italian immigrants (my parents were immigrants) and to this day some of my favourite fragrances are older frags from the 70-90s. I still wear and own vintage bottles of Boucheron Homme, Azzaro, Davidoff Zino, Dior Eau Sauvage , Van Cleef & Arpels Tsar, Brut etc brings back memories plus i still love the way they smell.

Hi Chris. Many thanks for your brilliant videos I have taken so much from. It seems my comment is three years late, but anyway.. when you discuss Dior Eau Sauvage, this black-belt-silver-buckle bottle is actually 2017 version, the nose behind it being Francois Demachy. The original (1966) Eau Sauvage edt, created by Edmond Roudnitska, is in silver-belt bottle. There was also 2012 version (black-belt-black-buckle bottle) with a distinctive heavy mihrr note, mostly unavailable today. I thought this might be of some use. Thanks again.

I would love for you to revisit "old-school" fragrances in more videos. Many of them (as you conclude in this video) are just as relevant and exciting today, and it's refreshing to venture back and explore those forgotten dnas again...I think of Rive Gauche for men; Habit Rouge; Opium for men; M7; Encre Noire; Déclaration; Eau de Gentiane Blanche etc... Also, your guests are always to notch!

To me, fragrances are similar to music. If it was composed and created with emotion and passion, then it will stand the test of time. If a song had that hook (frag note) that just fit so well in the composition that it kept you coming back for a listen (wear), then it is a success. Many "mainstream" releases in both music and fragrance come off as mass appealing and boring, and are quickly forgettable. To me, music is a portal to my past, as are fragrances. Thanks for the great work on this video.

I think that PDM Percival is so mistreated, but what makes Percival intresting is that it's the perfect transition between this old school classic mainstream style, and the new blu mainstream. To me it's interesting enough and versatile like nothing else! @FRAG-MENTAL Hey man, I realy enjoy this video as always. It is realy appreaciated that I am never bored in your videos. Any second! And what you said about classic frags is 100% true and I also enjoy them and also their flankers like Dior Eau Savage Extrem. But is sad for me that many our fathers or uncles or fathers of our friends wore Davidoff Cool water and because of this many people have those oldschool memories associated with Creed Green irish tweed which I love. I am surprised that you did not chose any of this two for this video as this smell will be all time great classic oldschool fragrance and almost everyone or maybe even everyone know this smell. Especialy when there is also Aspen Coty with same DNA which you can buy for price of two biers and it was probably on sale in many huge malls and supermarkets around the wolrd during 90's with Cool water for price of cheesburger. And you can still buy all three of them everywhere in the world like in small village as Czech republic. Peace from here here is one cloud of Creed GIT for all of you 😶‍🌫️

Stuart Greensill !!!! I was so hoping to find Paul Smith London mentioned here !! So grateful that I found you....For years and years each shopping trip (NYC) always included a clandestine search for this extraordinary scent in skanky bodegas, dark alley-ways, black markets, ....lol..... risking my life in decripit nabes trying to find my beloved Paul Smith. I bought it for my husband many years ago....swooned and kept a little vial for safe keeping. So please tell me --- Where did you find yours? Thank you x 10000! ♥️

Definitely all about associations. Even though George defined "good" in his videos, I still find it to be an incredibly subjective term. After all, I'm sure there are people out there that never considered 1 million or Bois du Portugal to be good in the first place! Nevertheless, it's great to hear your thoughts on each fragrance. Not hopeful that Eau Sauvage won't be discontinued though, the way Dior's been tracking. Might have to turn to niche and indie to keep the good times rollin'.

It lasts longer and is more rustic and less "posh" but ultimately better IMO. I was never a fan of 1 Million, I had it back when I only really had one or two fragrances on the go at any one time. I then had a boss who wore it but ignoring how popular it was it was never something I enjoyed so I do appluad it for that, it wasn't a simple crowd pleaser at release. On the same idea though, I do always keep a bottle of Tommy around and enjoy wearing it, but that may be clouded by the association, I associate it with great times when I was much younger. The late 90s, puffer jackets, Nokia 3210 etc. So it's always a pleasing smell for me.

I bought Colonia Intensa 11/2018 and wore it every warm day in 2019. Absolutely love it and got so many compliments from it. For example: After a football game I was sitting on the train and a bunch of drunk guys got on 2 stations later. One of them shouted "Wow, who is smelling this good?". I knew it was me because some weeks earlier I was on the train at night. Around 3 hrs into wearing Intensa and because of the AC on the train I suddenly got a scent bubble all around me which carried the fragrance and filled the whole train with the smell. Left me kind of speechless. Smelled glorious! Since then my favourite *by far* for warmer days. And totally agree. I started with Le Male. Everybody was wearing it. Never thought about buying one million. Still have a big bottle Le Male.
