I can't remember the last time I consistently used TV speakers for anything. I've used soundbars and surround sound setups for awhile now. Just crazy to think that's where I've gotten from watching stuff on an old tube TV as a kid.

For us is about energy saving.. a 7.2 soundsystem is not a good choice for long term usability.. not only does it consume plenty of power but helps getting the room hotter.. in an already hot season.

5:04 outside of North America Philips and Panasonic sell televisions with built in sound bars. Not premium sound but better than your typical TV.

On the old TV question - one thing to consider if it's a smart TV - that still works would be to do a 'factory reset' before passing it on - to clear all your Smart App subscrptions for one thing!

Excellent point!

I would rather mid to high end TVs have NO speakers. At the level of an LG C* or higher (more or less), you really need a decent sound system to have an experience that doesn’t feel imbalanced. They should make TVs with no sound, so they can focus on picture quality, and I can spend the rest of my money on speakers that I will actually use.

That's an interesting take and I agree with it. I feel most people who are buying budget models just to have a new TV don't care much for sound quality anyway. Amongst the people I know, none of them are particular about PQ or sound quality and just want whatever is cheap at the largest screen size possible. None of them know anything about the current tech specs or video/audio formats. I myself would at the very least need a soundbar for casual day to day viewing and a full home theater setup for a more engaging experience.

The savings would be minimal, the cost of adding speakers is much less than you think. You won’t be saving hundreds on a $4,000 TV and many high end TV buyers also don’t care a lot about premium sound so you’d have to make them with and without speakers and that’d reduce the cost savings even more.

​@@mavfan1 you're probably right...but I also wonder if there happens to be engineering tradeoffs with the TV overall that comes with them having to [both mechanically and electrically] squeeze a set of speakers in there. Probably not much tradeoff at all, but I don't know enough to say definitively. Point is, the savings you speak of may or may not be as simple as how much a cheap speaker costs the manufacturer in parts alone - question is, how best could they make use of that extra space if they didn't have to worry about it?

Some of the best HDR i have seen are old black and white movies that looks so good in HDR! The sound is different. Normally those old films have mono track. You can fake multi track to those… not sure if there is point in that. But the picture quality can be superior in those older 1940s films!

@@P-LOWN1997 Outside of the USA, most films are not available to buy on disc. Also, we have to look at multiple devices now. Not everyone has or even wants a TV.

They can't review anything until Sony gives them a review unit. On the other hand, they could buy the tvs instead of waiting. That is not sustainable in the long run.

As to “How good is PQ going to get?”, I’d argue we are just about there now. 10 years ago I had a Sony LCD and it had issues, mainly in the blooming and lack of black levels. We have TVs with perfect black levels, now we have Very very bright OLED and QD-OLED, and mini led looks darn good and gets super bright. The thing is there aren’t huge issues with today’s PQ that need fixing. Also, there is so much more content in 4k HDR, 10 years ago there was almost none. The studios have had time to remaster older films to 4K hdr with Atmos.

The original Indiana Jones trilogy on apple tv are re-skinned in Dolby vision and atmos and all look and sound great. Especially the Last Crusade.

I had a Sony 65X900A, was Sonys first 4k tv and it had huge speakers on the Left and Right sides and sounded amazing. The problem was you couldn’t add surround speakers or a sub. So you were stuck with these 2 channels, and they were Dolby Atmos. The speakers also made the tv really wide.

From personal experience regarding double processing, I was convinced that I was going to have to convert all of my dvds to blu rays because they looked just so bad and un-sharp and blurry on my Sony A80k, however it turns out that if I turn off processing on the Sony UBM-800 m2 or on the TV, I can breathe a little easier with a picture that is actually enjoyable

Would it be better to turn off Dolby Vision IQ on my Roku stick? If so what setting should I put it on?

Hey Caleb, I’m confused with the best speaker placement of BRAVIA Theatre Quad. Should the speakers face each other, I.e. left front face left rear and right front face right rear; or all four should be directed towards the listening point? Which position would perform the best 360 sound bubble? I’m confused on this as Sony manuals and promotional materials shows different speaker positions. Many thanks for picking this.

Bose made the VideoWave at one point. A tv with built in speakers. It’s sounded wonderful but wow was it heavy.

Unfortunately, Dolby Vision is only available on it through streaming or until Sony releases a Dolby Vision disc. But John Carpenter's Christine Dolby Vision looks really good & could be better on disc. But the Atmos track is the most amazing Atmos track I have ever heard. Whoever did it had some passion for the film with everywhere Christine goes the audio completely moves with her. Like Christine is actually in the house with you.

I think that the XR Clear function on 2023/2024 Sony TVs “undoes” source processing of signals and implements its own processing. Maybe Caleb can confirm this.

On OLED with something like a Sonos Ray built in at the back, with an optional subwoofer would be interesting

Are there any better places to sell old nice CRT tvs besides the standard ebay/fb/cl? Parents have an old Sony 32" or 36" massive CRT trintion that I know was crazy expensive at the time.

Quantum Dots TV screen (QDEL) might be the best screen . also mini led TV screens ( with led pitch less than 0.1 mm or less ) will be a great TV ( as CRT resembling with 0.5 mm pitch pixels ).

I think good audio is a must for a TV as it does not add to the cost, as picture processing will add . I have a CRT TV named Videocon Bazooka ( Indian Brand ) it's audio quality was way ahead at it's time (around 1998) still now i have not seen any TV matching the audio quality. it also have woofer builtin and bass, triple, balance controls. picture quality was also ahead at it's time with contrast, brightness, tint, sharpness controls ( in 1998 ). Sony was best in audio, but lost the race .

Panasonic already have a high end soundbar built in with subs from Technic.

I'm a Hi-Fi enthusiast of 45 years experience, and I'm NOT claiming my Hisense TV speakers are Hi-Fi, but I've used my experience in video and sound to adjust the settings for excellent picture and sound. The TV sound is more than acceptable for general viewing. I also have the option to pipe the TV sound through my Hi-Fi, which will annihilate ANY sound bar.

"Will...manufacturers Improve On-board Audio" Spooky! I'm currently watching on one of those very TVs, a Sony KD-55X9305C. I chose it particularly, as at the time, manufacturers were trying to outdo each other to make the thinnest set, meaning no room for proper speakers. My wife has hearing problems (both eardrums perforated) and upgrading will probably have to include a soundbar, unless Sony's boasts about it's in-panel speaker system is as good as they say.

Also, unless it’s changed recently, you can just drop old TVs off at Best Buy and they’ll recycle it. The same goes for any electronics really.

I changed to HDTV personally in 2007 (we had HDTVs before that, but not for my gaming usage), and what I had just before that for many years was the Samsung GXE 1395. The speakers would open and close into the screen and to the sides. I would love it if a TV had speakers to the sides of the TV at ear height (the center can go somewhere, or it'd use good phantom), and then it comes with an optional upgrade of a subwoofer and surrounds. I say I'd love that, but I love the idea of it if it was high quality with good image quality as well, but that'd be pricey, so I'd probably not buy it.

What about video quality reaching a 3d level of viewing?

I have my Apple TV and lg c2. I force Dolby vision, but that’s because i watch a lot of anime.

As for the audio for the TV. I find they could easily do it better and not even be that costly. Imagine the Bravia 9 which apparently has pretty good sound. Imagine if they had a wireless subwoofer or even plugged into TV via a cord. Not a big subwoofer but decent size. Imagine the sound now on that TV. They could focus solely on mid-range and Tweeters on the TV, give it decent amplification and then a sub to add nice deep base. It already has beam tweeters for more surround/ Atomos effect. That could easily replace most mid range soundbars. I would pay an extra few hundred for that. Or they could just make the Subwoofer an optional extra without it costing too much and then the sound has way more fuller bass and so on.

I can't think of any scenario where I would want to listen to TV speakers. I have actually bought cheap surround bars for family members who didn't have them.

The move that Panasonic did with stopping *Z1500 having the same panel as the *Z2000 but without the sound system of the higher end model was so bad IMO. I don’t like the design of the integrated sound bar and I don’t need it because I have a dedicated system.

I still have 14 CRT TVs. Sony Trinitrons, Sanyos, Toshibas, quasar, I even have a 26 inch windscreen Toshiba.

When is Bravia 9 and 7 review?

They should focus on audio but not on TV speakers but what can they do to improve Audio in streaming. The worse thing about streaming Imo is how dreadful it sounds compared to lossless. They dedicated a small bandwith to audio that it doesn't even reach a mb. If they manage to a least offer half of what lossless is it would be massive. Yeah panels might get better materials but right now audio and quality are stuck because we can't squeeze the best of 4k and lossless audio of the current TVs and home theater.

Does no Dolby Vision support make a difference on samsung QD-OLED?

Nope, no difference. You could have HDR10/HDR10+ and dolby vision side by side and you would need hawk like vision to see any real difference. Dolby vision won't really matter or really even be real dolby vision till TV's have 12-bit/10,000 nit panels and not to sure when that'll be happening. When it does you can count me in on wanting dolby vision.

Panasonic ALWAYS gets better Audio with each passing year. But folks ALWAYS complain how they DON’T need great built in speakers in an OLED lolz

Re TV speakers, CRT sets had large cabinets and hence room for decent speakers, the better ones sounded good enough to use them as the only source of audio. Then along came flat panels and the lack of space meant the on board speakers struggled for room to breathe. Why the makers even bother fitting them today i fail to understand when it comes to higher spec models that are bought by A/V enthusiasts that already have a far better soundbar or seperates system. This is why i went with a projector for my home cinema, it has the bonus of no useless apps or google. Re Dolby Atmos and Vision, if recent releases such as True Lies are anything to go by, then very little was spent on either, my DTS Laserdisc looks and sounds far better, they made a mess of that one

I wonder if he watched the Richard Donner cut of Superman 2.... it was a good "new" version of that film.

I just sold a 52" LCD for a $100 that I originally bought in 2009. You never know, someone might want your old TV 🤷🏿‍♂️

Not true. Nobody saying that either (for 2 hours per day) What everybody is talking about is watching OLED 8+ hours per day and having a static image on OLED (burn in image). Most or all OLED has built in burn in protection against burn in. You would have to make sure that it is on. As for longevity if you protect OLED from burn in is 10+ years. How about this. All samsung phones uses OLED.

Another way to take an unwanted LCD TV off your hands, that's in good shape, is contacting a local Catholic charity organization. Many churches help refugees resettle here in the US and they need used furnishings, clothes and TVs. They'll gladly take a TV off your hands and the plus side is you can take a tax deduction for the value of your goods. It's a win-win.

Don't want fancy speakers or smart features. I have a PC and my own speakers.

what i don't like is how low the volume is tracked and that you have to jack up the volume so damn high to hear anything. god help you if your forget the volume is cranked up when you switch to a another source that isn't tracked so low. I wish there was an system that could automatically sort this out.

True, but in fairness that isn't any TV companies' fault. Audio is made by different people or groups, so there is no way to make sure all sources have the same volume. I would like this people to be fixed, but it just cannot. Additionally, volume level isn't static, so even though some devices do normalise audio, that doesn't really much, because the volume of audio fluctuates up and down.

@@inigogc no one's saying to turn it on permanently without any option to turn it off. Just as it is today some people have a genuine and literal need sometimes to keep volume levels in check so they don't disturb other people. Artistic integrity is irrelevant if people watching a movir can't hear dialogue but don't wanna wake others that are sleeping when the action sequences come in. Or having to deal with the inconvenience of remembering the properly volume level ahead of switching to a different movie/app.

Tv speakers and sound bars are a waste of time and money if you want to hear what’s on a disc.

Celeb, let me explain something. Speakerbox and cost is very important. Most manufacuters are selecting Dolby atmos and putting shitty speakers. Because consumers think dolby atmos, dtsx or other lossless thing will save the sound of a speaker with min. 200Hz resonance freq.. So according to stupid customers, it is easier to put dolby atmos logo on the tv and put el-cheapo speakers inside, dont take time for tuning tv’s sound.. Frequency response is 80% of the story. Yet consumers fall for all the fuzz again and again.

I think this video goes Hand in hand, with a few other vids. But taking it at Face value, it makes sense. You know what I mean? 😂. I’ll stop there…sorry. 👍🤪🏳️‍🌈

If you want an answer on why TV audio sucks, look into how iPods killed CDs. Most people just don't c care about audio quality sadly.

Don't forget about radio and the loudness wars. I feel it did if not the most then a lot of the damage, music today has virtually no dynamics in it's sound. Then you have mp3., the file format itself. Back when that came out you had everyone and there mothers downloading songs at just a fraction of the file size a song would have had normally. So for years we had the quality of sound/music going up and up and when those 2 things happened it was almost like overnight hardly anyone cared about the quality anymore. All anyone except for the diehards cared about any longer was the ease of how they could get it, the size and the quantity of it so smaller it was the more they could store and the speed they could get it, oh and just how loud it could go so dynamics and quality of sound be damed and last but not least convenience. Now years later the damage has been done and will never be reversed, even though you can get the most highest quality sound as conveniently as any and if you are a person who cares about the quality of what they listen too and talk about it to anyone that ain't like you you might as well be speaking giberish to them. I find it all so strange because it don't feel that long ago when if you listened to anything it sound pretty good and almost everone seemed to care somewhat if stuff sounded like shit or not and even if the person didn't care they at least understood what you were talking about. lol

The only ones who don’t care are those clinging to their old deprecated tech like CDs. IPods have been dead as a product for a couple years now. CDs were frozen in time with 16bit, legacy digital. Apple music, for example, there are others, has 24bit and 48khz+ lossless audio across a vast portion of their catalog. From my appletv>maranta, to the headphone dac on my desk. The world of audio has never been better.

Dolby Atmos, 4K, Dolby Vision, HFR, Match Frame Rate, AirPlay from an iPhone, Instant video from all over the world, ability to send it to anyone anywhere in the world. Now look at yesterday - 1970s AM radio, Cassette tapes, music centres, Analogue TV with 3 channels, VHS, Mono sound on TV. 1990s Analogue satellite, VHS, Year 2000 DVD, CRT, LCD with poor black, 480p. We've never had it so amazing!!!! The dinosaurs always imagine a better world - old people did that here in the UK with Brexit and totally destroyed the country. The future is where it's at and in terms of audio and video, it's incredibly exciting. New high frame rates, no judder, immersive experiences etc and multi platforms

LG CX speakers are ok once tuned for sure but buying second hand 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound setup for cheap is a better option honestly, I bought a 7.1 setup for £100 from Facebook marketplace

There are just no in built tv speakers that can compare to proper speakers, and the LG CX struggles with the low end for sound lol. Its hilariously obvious and any online test and review easily debunks this.

1st question is really naive. You need to bring the price down for best picture, thats the pinnacle of TVs in future. OLEDs should be 100% burn-in free, TVs should be feather weight like a sheet of paper, you can just unroll and paste it on a wall. 'All in one' has never been a good thing. If you need a 'TV' per se, get any mid tier lcd tv, if movies, get OLED or projector, physical Bluray/ UHD disc, a 4K bluray player. For movie sound get a decent Soundbar like Samsung Q990 series or Sennheiser Ambeo Max, even Polk Audio Magnify mini or a custom A/V receiver+ speaker setup and you'll be fine. The future of sound technology should be 'wireless' as literally WIRELESS ( no wires 😉 )

There was a roll up TV made by LG but LG scrapped it this year because its just never going to get traction at the price they wanted for it, if governments and military never held back the human race we would already have futuristic stuff, sadly we are kept in the dark ages like a bunch of stupid apes

TVs don't need to get better it's the streaming quality that's the bigger problem, and no I won't buy blurays.

Hey Caleb personally I don't think TV's with super awesome speakers will ever be a thing. There are plenty that sound good now in perhaps a small room. I don't think it will ever rival the best sound bars and definitely not separate speakers with their own amplifiers. I do see TV technology getting better and the reintroduction of 3D as TV's get better and manufacturers look for something to make their TV's to have something to make them stand out. 👍😎

I think picture image is becoming less relevant, as the better the visual performance, the longer it will take for universal content to meet the standard consistently. How long will we have to look at wet fruit with black backdrops as the yardstick of our TVs ability?
