Are New Tartans Too Complicated & Trendy?

We were asked if we feel modern tartans (that is ones designed recently, not ‘modern’ as in color palette) are becoming more complex, more intricate and how we feel about it.
The answer is of course yes - as seen in new designs like our own Appalachian Folklore, there tends to be a lot more subtle color shifts and gradations in newer designs. Not always,. But it is a trend. We also ee the advent of marled yarns and some radical new colors that would not have been considered or even available readily “back in the day”
Is this a good or bad thing? Well beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The team discusses the macro of tartan design as a cultural expression and a creative art.

The most interesting and beautiful tartan I've seen is your Nordic Heritage. Keep down that road!

The added complexity allows more meaning with colors, thread count, etc. That aspect I certainly like.

They both appeal to me, and even on “simpler” tartans, the color palettes give some diversity. My first focus was getting kilts for families I’m descended from, but if they become available in marled yarn version, I’d get one of it looked great to me. I do have App folklore & Nordic Heritage + plan to buy the renewed Lunar - great examples.

I grew ally appreciate the aesthetic quality of the complex tartans that you all have designed. I prefer them actually. I’m really looking forward to see what y’all do with the America 250 tartans!

Rocky I truly understand the evolution of art that you are speaking of how one period of art is actually the foundation for the next period of art take for instance the American Beauty Tartan that you designed that is truly a piece of tartan that has been built on what I really call the classic American Tartan the Rob Roy the traditional Rob Roy the red and black

I guess the trouble is with so many different tartans, it's tough to come out with something new that isn't more complex. I kinda like 'um all, except that *I* have certain colors I usually _don't_ like seeing on a kilt. I'll leave it there... and say I really like y'all's German Heritage (new-ish) tartan (probably because I'm mostly German 🤣)

I picture the Isle of Ska tartan to be mostly black and white...

Just for myself I prefer the simpler, higher contrast tartans.
