Are Natural Beauty Products Better? | Lab Muffin Beauty Science

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

“Are natural beauty products better for you?” “Should I try to avoid chemicals in my beauty products?” These is probably the most common question I get asked, so here’s your answer!
I talk about:
* What exactly is a chemical?
* What’s the difference between natural and synthetic chemicals?
* Are natural ingredients safer?
* Should you avoid ingredients you can’t pronounce?
* Should you reduce the number of chemicals you’re exposed to?

Fun facts:
This topic was the reason I started my blog!
I dropped a laptop on my head while making this video and gave myself a concussion.
It took me about 20 takes to get myself to say all those chemical names properly...

Your videos should be mandatory viewing for anyone just thinking about buying skincare. You soothe my inner being with science, and I feel absolved of all my past false beliefs about ingredients, and expensive "all natural" skincare indiscretions. The beauty community needs you to help fight the insanity.

YESSS to this 🙌🏻🙌🏻 i’m so happy you made this video. The amount of people that ask me what skin care products don’t contain any “chemicals” and I hit them with the facts and say well, ‘water is a chemical, alcohols are chemicals, what “chemicals” are you trying to avoid?’ then I get asked a follow up question of what products are “natural” then I tell them that peanuts are ALL NATURAL but if you have a peanut allergy that is quite dangerous to your health, isn’t it? It irks me so much how consumers try to avoid “chemicals” and go “all-natural” with cosmetic products without actually fully researching what these terms even mean. Thanks for shining light onto this! Love the attitude girl!

Have you thought about producing your own science-based food/nutrition videos? There is SO MUCH nonsense out there about food, it would be lovely to have someone on KZread to help weed out the rubbish. People believe their n=1, anecdotal evidence outweighs the science, ESPECIALLY when the subject is food.

Thank you for this video. I unsubscribed from so many people because they've gotten into shilling a "clean, natural, non toxic" life style, promoting ridiculously priced bullshit products with some similar claims and exorbitant price tags. I bet if asked they can't even tell what exactly is "dirty, unnatural our toxic" in regular priced products that most of us journal people have the budget for tend to buy and use. They're outright lying and fear mongering at this point. I didn't sit through 8th grade chemistry to fall for this.

Lab Muffin Beauty Science they've gotten more advanced unfortunately 😂 they can name a few, but the case would often be something that has been proven again and again and again to have such a miniscule chance of being harmful to human being that a human would be sick from consuming such a large amount of product for the toxin to accumulate in the sufficient amount that could potentially cause said harm (they mostly opt for a cancer scare). Yet they still think that's a good enough reason to pay 3x the price for a foundation. I can't with these people 🙄

I uee both proclaimed "natural" and synthetic products in my skincare regime. What attracts me to the particular "natural" or vegan brands that I purchase is what they don't contain. Because I have no clue what 70% of the ingredients mean, a company who advertises their brand as having no sulphates, nitrosamines, DEA, MEA, Ethoxylates, PEGs, PPGs, Phthalates, GMOs, mineral oils, parabens and animal testing (yes I copied that off a proclaimed natural New Zealand brand), it's going to make me feel better about what I'm *not* putting on my skin, and how I can contribute to lessening my carbon footprint. There is no reason why synthetic products can't list potentially harmful substances or practices they don't contain -- even aspects such as being cruelty free and using eco packaging. I wish more would. Skin care will continue to develop as time goes on. 50 years ago we were told smoking was ok, and now we know it's not. Cigarette packaging now contains information on how smoking can harm you.

if it's harmful, the manufacturer probably can't even use it. We have strict EU regulations on what can and can't be used in cosmetics. Like she said, all these "free from" are just fear marketing. With cigarettes smoking, the companies had the research saying it causes cancer but they did not disclose it. We may one day discover some ingredients are really bad (like how Mercury was used in cosmetics ages ago) but from what we know now, a lot of the ingredients these "free from" brands are using are not harmless and/ or do not have enough research or studies done. i think it's everyone's choice what they want to use. if it makes you feel better, then use whatever you like. :-)

Absolutely loved this video! I can't roll my eyes enough when people bash me for putting on chemicals on my face, and insist on doing juice cleanses. Please please make more of these videos! Scientists with the ability to communicate in lay terms are so needed! :)

Hi! I'm starting to watch your videos, and I love them! I am not a chemist so I want to ask you what kind of products should I use to be more "eco- friendly" on my skin. I started using "natural" products trying to be more conciouss with the environment, but I know that maybe it's no the smartest thing. So can you tell me what kind of ingredients should I avoid to be more "eco-friendly" ???... Thanks and sorry for my english btw 😅

One question that you didn't touch on that I'm curious about was: I thought the "natural" label wasn't about synthetic/natural chemicals but that the chemicals were extracted and have the ability to be discarded with a minimal environmental impact. Doesn't the natural label more mean that the company makes an extra effort to dispose of the chemical byproduct and not just dump it in the waterways or a landfill without neutralizing it first? Also that when the product is used properly it includes materials that won't harm the environment? How do I find out which companies are environmentally conscious?

Not necessarily! "Green" is usually the word used for that. Many chemicals that are synthetic in origin can produced/discarded in a more environmentally friendly way than natural ones e.g. mineral oil (byproduct of petroleum, almost zero environmental impact) vs sandalwood oil (endangered) or palm oil (destruction of orangutan habitats). Unfortunately to tell if a company is "green" and environmentally conscious you'll have to research the company. Most companies that are environmentally conscious will have the information publicly available. "Greenwashing" is a whole other concept as well where companies pretend to be green without actually doing it properly.

This is great! thank you for the info and explanation. I am trying to be more ecofriendly in the sense that I want to reduce the amount of plastic that I throw away. I want to start using a solid shampoo for example but I can't find one that is NOT parabens free(etc). What I mean is that I want the same quality as my traditional shampoo and not to mention the certainty that it is made in a laboratory and not in someone's kitchen. I think that established companies (small or large well-known brands) do not produce this type of product (solid shampoo with similar composition of a liquid one) since they could not be competitive with all this "natural" marketing, which is a shame because it would be a real benefit for the environment. i'm not an expert this is just my point of view.

maybe i didn't express myself correctly with parabens free example now that I think about it. My real problem is that most of them don't have official certification, quality control or testing. I easy to find solid shampoo it's hard to know which ones are produced in a suitable environment by professionals
