Are my Tattoos a Sin?

What does the Bible teach about Tattoos?

I do have tattoos, small and hidden but I do have them. Got them before I had a real relationship with God. I regret them yes, because now I know I have no need for that stuff. I was looking for some sort of validation from the world. However, I don't allow my tattoos or any other past sin to dampen my relationship with Jesus. He saved me in spite of my sin. I give everything I have to my Lord. 🙏🏾❤️

As an ex-tattoo designer and someone who got very close to actually pursuing a career in tattooing and with an ambition to open a chain of studios all over the world.. I can tell you right off the bat, God took me off that path.. HE didn't want me to pursue tattooing. 99% of people who get tattoos do it for vanity reasons.. For some insight.. The 1% and I've designed well over 5000 custom designs for over 3000 clients.. About 30 of them were for legit, practical reasons.. For example.. A few people had some ugly and traumatic scars they wished to be hidden.. But they all had their own personal reasons! and some wanted to cover up their exes names.. Out of all the custom designs I created only a handful requested Christian tattoos.. And again it's really just for vanity reasons. Personally I have one crappy tattoo on my arm that was the first tattoo design I penned on paper.. Now I'm thinking about covering it up with just a thick generic black cross.. My kids are like, "you should get a more cooler cross on your arm, maybe one of your tribal ones?" Sure, but again, that could fall into vanity. However, I learned when it comes to tattoos, its really a heart thing.. Why are you getting that tattoo? If it is for vanity only, then no I wouldnt suggest getting a tattoo just to show off.. You will in time get bored with that design.. If you really must get a tattoo get a meaningful one.. But in reality, a tattoo is really just down to the individual, its a personal choice, its not a Heaven of Hell issue. What really matters is what design are you getting tattooed? Even now I still take on the odd tattoo design commission but the only difference is I don't accept all of the requests I get due to my Christian faith.

I guess I'm a part of your quoted 1% because mine were not vanity related. I don't even like 'attention', so to speak. I have a few, and now, as a more mature Christ follower, I wish to remove a couple. All of my tattoos came from a design/creative thought and desire. Young and passionate... but thank GOD, He awakened me to that sin and led me to use my creativity in more constructive and God honoring way. 🙏🏽

Yip, mostly vanity. It’s worldly and fleshly. 1 John 2:16 - For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

The question I always present when the discussion of tattoos is... why? When it comes to God, Jesus, a family member (dead or alive), an ideology, a belief system or anything, if it's in your heart and you live it, why do you need to put it on your body? You can put a lot of messages on your body and not believe one word of it. God Bless 🙌

Coming from experience yes they can hinder. I got a lot of mine while I was young and like you said I regret some now especially because two of them are Buddhism symbols. A lot of my reasoning to getting them was because I love drawing and art but just like you said the motive behind it isn’t good. Most of the time now a days it glorifies the body of the person. It reminds me of the one passage where Paul says just because we can do something doesn’t mean it’s beneficial.

I look at it like this. We didn’t come into this world with any markings on our bodies so anything we do to ourselves that isn’t commanded by God could potentially be a stumbling block in our spiritual walk. I have one tattoo that I got when I was a nonbeliever & used to do artwork for tattoo artists but once I got saved the Lord convinced me of getting anymore tattoos or helping other get them by contributing my art to it. So I don’t associate myself with tattoos. However Paul does teach us not to force our convictions on others so I don’t judge those that get them but I couldn’t with a clear conscience suggest someone get one or support the industry any longer.

I personally don’t have any tattoos, but I’ve never had an issue with anyone that has one or wants one. My advise is just make sure it isn’t something you’ll regret in the future.

Brother Corey, You covered Leviticus 19:28 regarding tattos. The implication is paying homage, demonstrating ownership or a claim to. Think of labels or brands. It always shows a connection in some way. Revelation 3:10-12 NKJV Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown. He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God. And I will write on him My new name. Christ is saying that those who overcome and stay faithful, HE will right the name of HIS God and the holy city New Jerusalem. So we mark ourselves after things of this world that will perish while Christ is waiting to write his name on our glorified bodies. Even if you are doing it to "point to God" or whatever, why not let Christ do the writing? He looks after the heart more than anything else so such an expression is meaningless if we don't love God with all our mind, heart, and strength.

So you are putting yourself through pain to update, perfect, or put your spin on what the perfect Creator of the universe, who knew you before the creation of the world. It's no different than LG TV + ideology, you think you know better than God and you can some how improve on His design. You can find the answer in the Bible. Men shouldn’t wear earrings. I think it makes men look effeminate or play for the same team. Thatis what it meant back in the days. It use to be men wearing an earring on the left or right ear. Now, I see men wearing 2 earrings. My Man use to wear diamond studs. I gave him my opinion about my dislike. He stop wearing the earrings. The Bible says: A woman shall not wear man’s clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman’s clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God. I have a full arm of flowers and butterflies. Very benign and not offensive. I’m an artist so I personally love tattoos and asking others about theirs. It was not a lapse of judgment for a time. It was over a period of time. I still want more. I love my tattoos and so far, I have yet to regret them. Perhaps because they are of pretty things representing transformation to me. I explain to people how the butterflies shows how God can take something like a caterpillar and transform it into something so beautiful It’s a representation of transformation. I get the point of if I didn’t have any, no one would judge me and by me having them, I am not a representative of Jesus. However, due to the fact I have them AND show the fruits of the spirit, it usually always makes people realize that you can’t judge a book by its cover. May I add that we are to honor our temple so IRONIC those that judge me for tattoos saying it’s not glorifying to God are obese or overweight, or eat terrible, don’t workout, drink, taint their brains by watching crap on tv or watch porn, and don’t take care of their body, are lazy, or swear, or don’t spread the gospel, or many other things that don’t represent their walk with Jesus. So ironic. Yet, here I am. Full of tattoos. Glorifying my body in strength, flexibility, dance, exercise, eating clean, being a loving submitting wife, always spreading the gospel, executing the fruits of the spirit and giving generously and loving my Neighbor. Because people judge those so much with tattoos, maybe we are being watched more closely.

I have a tattoo on my leg of a descending dove, a tattoo of the Lion of the tribe of Judah holding the keys of heaven and hell, and a tattoo of a cross with the nail pieced hands of Jesus on the other. Nodoby can see these. I was young and new in the faith. Tattoos have been used in pagan religions for a long time. Will I get another? Yes. A cover up of a mistake. More importantly, I look forward to a new body one day that doesn't have artwork on it.

@Smart Christian Question, doesn't tattoos fall under the 10 commandments? The second one to be exact right? 4Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, -Exodus 20:4-5 Especially when people say that their tattoos define them and represent their struggles, so on and so forth etc. Not to argue but this is just a point I want clarified.

You think gods going to see them when you die and tell you NOPE! No heaven for you! Well in many many indigenous cultures tattoos are a part of their culture. Showing respect to their ancient ancestors and cultures. I guess your god doesn’t like those people even though you say to love everyone. Free will is what I heard god gave us. The free will to do what we think is best for us and our families. Not to live life worrying about what god thinks! What kind of life is that? You choose to do good or bad. You know what’s right and wrong yet you blame the devil and his demons for making you choose poorly. Accountability for your life’s choices is what life’s about. In the end we’ll see how much we loved in this life. How much we gave to those that are needy. Because that’s what Jesus did. He preached love and kindness. Not judgment. He helped those that needed help. The blind and the poor and the diseased. He welcomed the poor and homeless and the sick with open arms and an open heart. He didn’t think they were gross or hideous. He loved them and in return the people loved him and followed him. He was a man. And treated hi fellow man as if they were his own family.

The Bible states that the customs of the Gentile are worthless and evil(Jer. 10:1-3, Eph. 4:17-19), so that makes it even more apparent that getting inked up is sin.
