    On the flip side, they would have managed to raise multiple times what they spent on that event as opposed to not doing that event. Example: Case 1 - no event and they get 100k. Case 2 - they create an event and they spend 20k for the event, but they get 200k (which typical in that you aim for 8-10 times what you put in). Isn't the second case a strategically more logical choice to make?

    @@umayrsra it's a fair argument. But suppose someone pays Zakat and s percentage of that pays for the event. The event doesn't necessarily recoup that individuals charity as majority income could be from Sadaqah. In such a scenario, has the Zakaat been spent appropriately?

    @@empatel96 I live in Malaysia. There are special institutions for zakat here. Charity organisations only handle sadaqah. So I don't know. What I do know are these two things: 1. Zakat shouldn't need an event to get people to pay up. 2. In zakat, one of the rightful recipients of zakat is the amil (the guy/institution that collects the zakat on behalf of the state). This could be used rightfully to handle administrative costs. Because even collecting and distributing zakat has costs.

  • @umayrsra

    @umayrsra

    @@empatel96 I have also heard that zakat is in that transaction when you first let go of your money. Your ajr is complete because Allah counts what you sacrificed. What happens thereafter is the responsibility of the next person holding that amanah to distribute the zakat or the person receiving the zakat. Here are a few cases: 1. You give out zakat to person that you understand needs it. Turns out he's a liar and scammer and didn't need it. You didn't know, your ajr is still complete on this case in syaa Allah. 2. You give out zakat to a charitable organization assuming it is competent. It wasn't and your money goes down the drain of organization hell. You didn't know and your ajr is still complete in syaa Allah. But then Allah knows best. I can only inform from what has been taught to me.

    Transparency is the main issue, it is mainly public donated money which should be properly accounted for. Problem with large charities is that they way overspend and waste too much money. This is main reason i feel reluctant to give to them. Muslim charities should be ahead of the curve and have a model where every penny is accounted for.

    This was very informative and serves as a very useful guide to understanding why admin fees are needed. However, from my experience, admin fees do not include marketing/fundraising costs and are usually taken as a separate fee. I worked for a large muslim charity who openly stated ~6% admin fees but would not openly state that a further 12-13% of your donation goes to fundraising/marketing activities. This is also a question that should be raised to charities as without this we cannot get a fair and clear understanding of just how much of a chunk of our money actually goes toward the charitable project/programme. I'd love to see a follow up video discussing this. Keep up the great work Masha Allah. Already liked and subscribed :) 👍

    JazakhAllah khayr, a much-needed clear explanation of charity practices which many people misunderstand. However, this is definitely not a balanced look. There is a scholarly difference on taking from individual donations for overheads. Many within the Hanafi school particularly believe that the eligibility of the administration element of Zakat is specifically for a recognised Muslim government. That in the absence of such a government it is an individual's responsibility to make sure their Zakat gets to those in need. The underlying sentiment here is that while charities make the process easier, there is no obligation on them to collect Zakat or any other donation. The obligation is on the individual and the recognised Muslim government. This is more so when using part of donations for things like advertising, where it can be argued there is no Islamic legal precedence. I believe it is because of differences such as these that Ummah Welfare Trust was created, with their '100% donation policy'. Don't get me wrong, I support some of these charities myself and will continue to do so as there are scholars who do support the usage of Zakat for administration. As has been highlighted, some of these charities really focus on making a meaningful impact, rather than throwing money at a problem. I see it in a charity like Islamic Relief, especially in their sustainable projects and political lobbying (unfortunately quite unique in the Muslim charity sector). I also appreciate that National Zakat Foundation allows you to select how your money is spent. However, I do take issue with the fact that Muslim charities are either unprofessional, too corporate, or an odd mix of both. They seemingly compete more and more with each other, at times take on increasingly liberal interpretations, or just devoid of scholarly guidance at times, and from personal experiences I have been told about - often a poor working environment. Some may argue these are natural results of efficiency and modernisation, but do we need charities with Muslim-sounding names to take our money every now and then, or spiritually grounded, noble organisations helping to carry out one of the most sacred pillars of our faith? Just my thoughts.

    Gift Aid is key. Doesn't cost you anything but still it makes it possible for charities to cover their costs and give to the people in need. Glossy marketing literature on the other hand is just a waste of money. One size doesn't fit all. Offering a yearly charity/zakat review might be more effective, create loyalty and confidence in donors.

    Excellent and alot of food for thought. I have always been an advocate for charitable work i.e giving your time and effort for charity thats whether you are a doctor, an accountant, a marketing specialist or fundraiser. If people are being payed 1000s of pounds from charitable money because of their experiece and knowledge then i do expect these people to think out of the box and come up with solutions so that 100% charity money goes to the people in need as your example of ummah foundarion. Now you also stated small charities should not do the work that larger organisations are already doing due overlaping of costs BUT if you look at 5 largest islamic charities in the UK their collection cause are overlapping meaning they are wasting resources as well. To cover costs islamic charties need to provide freelance opportnties for graduates and umemployed. They need build networks with local charities such as in palestine or pakistan to reduce was overhead costs. They are alot of opportunties for charity organisations to establish income streams i.e providing islamic lessons, selling second clothes, recyle islamic literature etc.

    This was extremely helpful and informational. I am (was) one of those people who had issues with charities charging admin fees. After this video I am good. 10-12% is reasonable. But when the admin fees is 90% and charity is 10% is a problem and beleive me there are a lot of charities who deceive people....look it up.

  • @exsalafi393
    @exsalafi3933 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it's permissable to use zakaat for admin and wages but as long as it's not excessive. Many charitable organisations use so many volunteers but those who are in the management level are sometimes paying themselves very healthy wages which people question. This is why so many people are supporting individuals who have volunteers on both sides who are totally dedicated and seek no admin or wage costs.

    I think we should be worrying more about the many Muslims dying because of oppression and Muslim leaders turning a blind eye to what is going on whereby if they did take action we would have less Muslims suffering. Music or no music on an advert is not something that’ll make any reasonable change to anything really.

    Nice breakdown of the issues. Just curious why would u personally go to an African country to build a well and incur the expenses you detailed? Why not liase with a legitimate and transparent body in that country and send the money via technological means, and let that organization do the necessary?

    A lot of charity organizations hold millions of pounds in their Bank account, while people are in desperate need of aid all around the Globe. In my view, not even a penny should be held back fully knowing that that penny will be useful to someone somewhere who needs it very badly.

    People who provide their talents to charity organizations should be able to live their lives as well, they should be able to afford grocery and housing and be properly compensated for their talents which is why there is overhead. People often think when you work for a charity you should just vow a life of poverty so their donations can "count" more, but that is counter productive. People shouldn't have to take charity to work for one.

    Zaka and Sadaqa is 2 different things. As far as I know From Zakat portion of money should go to Colector of Zakah who travels to collect fruits and cattle and other commodities,as we find in Quran and Sunnah, But to translat this as ,,Administrators fees ,,is quite dangerous in my opinion. As for Sadaqa there is nothing what goes to collector ,everything has to go to needy. And if someone doing charity work for sake of Allāh, to earn pleasure of Allah and Paradise, he will not take a single penny as salary for his charity work.but if it is just way to earn living ,he will find 100 excuses to fill his bank accounts with donators money!

    I don’t think the issue is with admin costs but actually the issue is with transparency. Most Muslim charities are not transparent with the costs involved or how the donations are spent exactly. Registered charities are supposed to make filings, publish accounts, etc. Muslim charities should follow this lead, they need to be better at governance and provide greater transparency to improve this area and ultimately to help build trust with donors.

    MashAllah, brilliant video, I genuinely used to abstain from giving to people like Muslim Hands due to their admin costs, I have been sticking with Ummah Welfare Trust so this has made it easy for me to branch out, inshallah. I was told a masalah when I was young that the admin costs have to be fixed by the state otherwise it isn't really Islamic, and it had to be an Islamic state that does that, is this correct? Plus, I was also told it can't be more than 2/3% of the overall charity amount, is that true? That doesn't seem enough.

    Would be great to see a full review on Ummah Welfare trust and SKT welfare. Both are 100% donation policy and they both have Annual reports. The basic model used is where all overheads are covered by Gift aid and admin-only donations. I feel very strongly about this as I honestly believe if even one of these charities is operating successfully, truthfully and transparently as a 100% donation policy charity, why are there other charities operating in any other way to this??? Anyway would be great to see a review brothers, jzk!

    I want to know how much of our donations are given to the over-excited TV presenters on the many Islamic channels, especially in the UK. It's so cringe them shouting 'Takbeer!' everytime someone donates. Seems a trend these days. And why so many Muslim charities in the first place? Seems like a good business to get into (and for all the wrong reasons too).
