Are Megachurches a Circus? w/Cody Jefferson

Are churches more like businesses or are businesses becoming more like churches? And, more importantly, are churches becoming more of a theatrical performance than an authentic gathering?
In this episode, Taylor is joined by Cody Jefferson, discuss some of the downfalls of religion, the modern church, and the breaking down of commonly held beliefs by both believers and non-believers.

Fun conversation! The question at about 1:06 is an important one. Taylor asks Cody about connecting oneself to King David. The term that they should have discussed is allegory. In biblical hermeneutics, aka understanding the text, allegorical interpretation like looking for a hidden message or moral lesson in a story. So, when people use King David’s battles to talk about their own life challenges, they’re finding a deeper meaning in the biblical story that goes beyond its historical setting. They’re using the story as a metaphor for their own experiences. For example, we are all king David, and all challenges in life are just a giant that we can defeat. While there are always principals, spiritual insights and key points the danger is distorting the original meaning.

This is why I can't stand the age that we're in, the pole thing has been blown out of proportion the guy swallowed a sword and then climbed the pole with the sword still in his stomach that was it! People are so quick to judge it. There was nothing sexual about it.

The reason why there will always be poverty is for a bunch of reasons. Taylor mentions that Cody "curses the world" when he says there will always be poverty. This side of heaven that is true. And the world is cursed because of sin. While heaven is penetrating and making all things new. Taylor does not have a simple understanding of justification, sanctification, and glorification. It is a slippery slope to have an over realized eschatology.

@@TaylorAWelch Justification: This is like being in a courtroom where you’re declared not guilty. It’s a one-time event where God forgives your sins because you trust in Jesus. It’s as if God says, “You are righteous in my eyes now.” Sanctification: Think of this as a journey or a process of growing up. After you’re justified, you start to become more like Jesus in your thoughts, words, and actions. It’s not overnight but happens gradually as you live your life with God’s help. Glorification: This is the final step in the future when there is a new heaven and new earth. AKA- no poverty, no sin...etc. It’s when you’re made perfect and sin-free, and you’ll live forever with God in a state of glory.

Bad theology has definitely been used to wield power and abuse people. But honest theology can bring us closer to the truth and closer to God. Good theology protects us from false and hurtful teachings. I appreciate your willingness to hear pushback and different opinions. I wish you the best on your journey.
