Are JSB heavies really better in the wind? lets find out..

Спорт

comparing the 3 most common air rifle pellet weights side by side in light winds.
the pellets on test are the 7.87gn jsb exact express
the 8.44 jsb exact diablo
and the jsb heavy at 10.34gn
as per usual its hard to perform any scientific testing outdoors but the results back up the ballistic calculators results..kind of
the rifle is an Anschutz 9015 in sub12 and the scope is a prs specific discovery ed prs 5-25x56
hopefully in the coming weeks i can test the new h&n 8s side by side a good batch of the jsb exact..

    Interesting results and nice shooting. I like heavies in my sub 12 springers. They seem to retain a bit more energy. At my club range, some of the knock down targets are a bit stiff. Ordinary Exacts won't always work on them - they wobble when hit but don't go over - but heavies do the job every time.

    I use the 10.34"s for most of my shooting through my Kral puncher jumbo. They are much better all around. But I use the 8.4 for shooting pests indoors at a reduced speeds to prevent property damage if they pass through. But I shoot hunter field target with the 10.34 and get great performance down range. They are not as affected by winds as compared to the others.

    Nice! I think the wind might have varied? I think it's very rare in the UK to get consistent wind speeds. Even a slight speed fluctuation is huge in %age terms. And then there's gusts... direction shifts... a mare. To counter this, I test pellets in rotation: A,B,C,D; A, B, C, D rather than series: AAAAA, BBBBB, CCCC etc. Messes with your drop a bit, but with enough height in the target, you can accommodate. This does even out the groups. As for heavy vs light I think in very slight wind shifts heavy pellets buffer the variable, but if it's 'windy' they all drift a mile! As such I do like the mid-heavy pellets (9.5g ish) like QYS heavy and H&N BFT, if they work in your barrel. But barrel preference trumps weight, so I often shoot JSB Exacts too (Weihrauchs). With my FX magazines (toot), I agree, QYS streamlines work excellently. Apart from the first two from the mag. Who needs the first two (only 10%) anyway...? May have to get a single shot gun this year..!

And since Rifle fsm is considerably cheaper, it's my goto pellet. I use my avenger for hunting (squirrel & birds) shooting; at around 880-890 fps, I got similar groups like yours at 20m but larger group than yours at 50m .. maybe I should turn-down the speed a bit to get better pellet stability.

    Not sure on these ones. I didn't notice anything out of the ordinary when shooting them, the batch of 8.4s i shot before wasn't great so they may have been dropping a little more. I'll dig out the cards when I get chance and have a nose. Probably be better to look at the drops between the express and the heavies to get a definitive answer. Also sometimes you just get an unexplainable weirdness between weights. Often get it between the same weights, from different dies too. There's also the potential the (apparent ) peak of the trajectories is at slightly different ranges so looking like more or less drop. I'll have a better nose when I'm back filming and have the cards to hand.

  • @tillysgunstocks

    @tillysgunstocks

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Eric, the holdover that I get with my setup could be vastly different to yours. The scope height,power/speed, and magnification of the scope will all show an apparent different holdover. The main thing to look at is the drop between the different weight of pellets. Just so you can visualise what's going on and that the holdover amounts arent a huge amount greater for a heavier pellet, compared a lighter one. We can Learn to range the distance to our targets pretty well with practice, but reading the wind will always be a dark art and much more of an educated guess. I'd rather reduce the work I have to do judging the wind 😉 In a few of my other videos I will often quote the drop from my 25yd zero, it's very interesting

    In England the sub12 isn't too bad for close range pest Control and use in smaller spaces. We don't need a licence or anything for sub12. just some sensible storage precautions. We can have some really mad high power air stuff and large calibre powder burners if we want and have a legitimate use for them. Getting a firearms certificate here isn't really a problem. But you wouldn't get a high power fac air rifle to shoot in your garden. But if you have enough space on suitable land or a club membership of a place that has the space it's really no problem atall. I quite like the challenge of sub 12, it makes target shooting really tricky and fun..

    I have a different position which is weight of pellets are irrelevant. If you can zero a rifle indoors you know how pellets behave in perfect conditions. When shot outside it’s a different ball game altogether no matter what the weight is they all drift they can also strike higher or lower because wind is not consistent. Also the shooting here is only relevant if you shoot only in that field on that day from the prone position. Anywhere else these results are meaningless. To learn how to deal with wind is to shoot a lot in different locations in different weather. This is the challenge.
