Are Influencers Ruining Fashion? Let's Discuss...
Today we’re sitting down to have a little discussion. I often think a lot when I’m walking my dog about different things and lately I’ve been thinking about the fashion influencer industry as a whole. Today I wanted to discuss things I’ve noticed, how things have changed over the years and problems that I see with certain things. I’d love for this to be an open discussion and to get your intake on the fashion industry when it comes to influencers as well. Let me know in the comments!

This is so refreshing to watch! After hearing that the fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries, it really shifted my perspective on disposable fashion and made me want to be more sustainable. I totally understand that it’s their job, but it’s overwhelming to see an influencer post a new outfit every day.

Erin, this is one of your best videos. I totally agree. I am glad that more and more people start to question this crazyness and shop more sustainably and buy second hand, etc. Money cannot buy style in my opinion. Knowing our own style is the key. I started buying second hand a couple of years ago and I have found great treasures, like new items and most of all, I don't see them at every corner. Who wants to be a clone of fashionistas. You can get inspiration from influencers but like Karl Lagerfeld said: "Trendy is the last stage before tacky."

Also, I love that quote! and second hand shopping can be so much fun - so many of my favourite things & best fits have been found second hand because I find I'm much pickier when shopping second hand so I really only bring in those true pieces I love!

@@byerinelizabeth I am glad you had the courage to talk about it. You brought the topic with honesty and this is so refreshing! Fashion is so much more than trends. We need young women like you to influence the youth in a good way. This is something we don't see enough on KZread and I am happy you did! When shopping sustainably and second hand, we reduce the damages to the environment but it is also a great opportunity to be creative with what we already own.

Excellent video Erin. I completely agree with your take on luxury items. Moreover, I have to say that most influencers I follow also seem to be gifted many items or become ambassadors to the same brands: Everlane. Ana Luisa. Lily Silk. Sezane. Organic Basics, etc. I see the same items over and over again on my favorite influencers. Perhaps it is the nature of the beast but I look to KZread for inspiration, not to see the same outfits on different women.

Often brands with work with influencers who share their target market which would be why that ends up happening. I personally love a lot of those brands, but I agree in wanting to see variety! I think as a creator you need to try to have a healthy balance in your content and stay true to yourself

It was about time someone speak about this, its exhausting to keep up with the fashion trends, I'm all for a trendy once it's a modern classic version. the shame and social pressure for wearing something that was last season is ridiculous. I love slow fashion with a twist. We waste too much money on clothes then toss them out expensive or cheap we are affecting the earth. Your points are facts. These are things we need to speak about more." Style is timeless and fashion says too me"

Absolutely on point! I started out watching KZread fashion videos as I found fashion Magazine’s were featuring weirder and weirder outfits that I couldn’t relate to or afford. I mean really, where the heck in Northern Ontario am I going to wear some of these get ups?? Bare legs in winter with a dress!! Do you know what -40 feels like on bare knees? But I digress. I thought the KZread fashion videos would provide me with the “fashionable girlfriend next door” experience. Some one like me but in the know of fashion trends and classics and how to invest in good basics to build/maintain a core wardrobe all the while getting a better sense of what was new and upcoming for the season. What I got was caught up in desiring the latest and greatest on the fashion whirlwind seasonal cycle. When you see blogger after blogger raving about an item you start to think, I need that. Who cares if I already have 17 slouchy cardigans that were perfect just yesterday but now pale in comparison to the featured cardigan! Being at home during this self isolation period made me take a good look at my closet, my style and my fashion needs. I have enough stuff! I have lots of great stuff. I just now need to know how to make all this stuff work for me, my body, my lifestyle. Taking a hard look inward. That is why I love your channel and Alyssa Beltempo. I may not have the exact piece you feature but you give inspiration to get creative and push myself to do more with each piece. Keep up the good work ladies.

It’s so much more relatable in the sense that they are getting a lot of use out of their clothing and styling and re-styling their pieces. I think it’s a positive influence for me to aspire to build my own wardrobe with pieces I love and can be more versatile as well as a little more classic!

I agree with your remarks. There seems a strange disconnect, many influencers feature Walmart, Target or H&M clothing, shoes and accessories, then have $10,000 handbags. They are gifted really expensive items, or are given an allowance of, say $1,000 to choose freebies from a brand. Recently, I fell in love with a necklace worn on one of my favorite channels, then found out it was an $8,000 gifted piece., would she really have got that if she had to pay for it? Also, high-rated influencers are vlogging orgies of consumption, showing new homes, cars, furnishings, luxury wardrobes, etc., endlessly. I find myself unsubscribing a lot lately, especially those influencers who seem to live in a fantasy world of self-indulgence when so many have lost their lives or income. On one channel, many viewers tried to gently suggest that she was losing touch with her viewership, she then made a video lecturing viewers on “their negativity” - I had enough! I like your channel because you are a real woman, styling real clothes!

I agree 100% with you, which is also the reason you are the one and only fashion blogger I really follow. I college, we studied the German sociologist Georg Simmel, who already talked about the phenomenon in 1902, which he called 'paradox of fashion'. With fashion, you want to show your individuality, express your true self and that you have a really good taste, especially with cities that are becoming more and more crowded during the centuries. Everybody wanted to stand out. But because everybody is doing so and they all basically wear the same thing, it only shows how naive and in desperate need of admiration everyone is. Now, the whole blogging industry takes it to a whole new level, because - as you say - they are not even actively deciding what to wear anymore. Those bloggers really have become puppets for the big companies, who now dictate what the newest stuff is that shows everybody how individual you all are. Paradox. Georg Simmel really is a good read on that. Best regards from Germany, stay safe Erin!

When I was 16, I got one pair of shoes per year from J.C Penney and had to wear them everyday until they were worn to shreds, and beyond, to get a new pair. I went all through middle and high school without a coat, windbreaker, or jacket of any kind, only a sweater left over from my grade school uniform. I used my lunch money for a week to buy another one at the Goodwill to put over it, but I just couldn’t starve long enough for a used coat. Even though I tend to overbuy clothes sometimes now, I cut myself a little slack because of the deprivation of those years, and through college, which, though I worked every hour I had free, was not much better.

For them not to get bullied, their parents buying them same uniform style things as other kids... it’s today’s society somehow became all about what you have and can afford or you’re a loser kinda mentality... or u r poor, so kids won’t connect with you... sadly these schools have very smart kids, but belongs to rich families. One thing to mention: luxury brands start feeling desperate when times are hard, fearing big drops in sales. So, they simultaneously gift items to top influencers, while compensating by increasing the prices for everyone else. I love good quality, but I won’t buy “status” brands in anything, even if I can afford them. It violates my values; people with that much money should be giving more away to help others who can’t afford food, shelter, or healthcare for their families. I recently worked at a charity where the billionaire boss had multiple Porsches, spent $150 on each lipstick, but made the volunteers bring their own toilet paper to work there!

I enjoyed this video. One reason I like your content so much is seeing the unique items in your wardrobe. I also enjoy seeing a real wardrobe where the same clothes are styled different ways. These things are more important than seeing something new all the time. In 2019 I started tracking clothing items and accessories that I bought. I keep a notebook with a wishlist by season then a list of items purchased including date, item, and price. This can help us see how much we buy, how much money we spend and how close we stay to the list of planned items. I think the way to start having a great wardrobe is finding your style then having a color scheme. Also keeping in mind we can appreciate a beautiful item without needing to own it. Thanks 💕

I totally agree with you on every point. As you get older and wiser, you realize that influencers are able to have so much clothes and high end bags because they are gifted to them. You need to step back and realize it is their job and that they promote certain brands for their benefit. We need to be more cautious and selective with our purchases because we can sometimes feel the need to purchase and emulate them. I feel that in the last year or so I've asked myself, "Do you really need all that stuff?" I've been cleaning out my closets and trying to purchase only things I really like and need regardless of what influencers are wearing. Thank you for this video and for being so unique. Aa someone who’s personally always dreamed of having a few luxury bags that I’m paying for with my hard earned money it irks me so much to see some of these influencers rotate through very expensive bags like they are candy.. we’ve somewhat lost our concept of luxury being premium :(

I'm pretty happy with what I have now and I'm glad I didn't buy anything I'd regret. The fashion industry really is toxic in a way. Now, I just look and see if there's anything I'd actually wear or want to incorporate into my life. If not, I just move on. Thanks for sharing your views on this whole thing. Hi Erin, nice video as usual :) I agree that this influencer phenomenom is getting out of hand... We (basic user) always cared about our posts, about sharing something nice and meaningful but I feel that now, after all these influencers had started showcasing their always picture perfect life, we are way more concerned about what we post : it has to be perfect, with the right angle, light, effects.... so nothing is spontaneous or authentic as in the past. It is also true that we are continuously brain washed with subtle ads that pressure us into feeling inadequate, as we always have to keep up with the latest trends if we want to be cool and liked. That is just so stressful! I think one really has to know theirself in order to avoid being sucked into this frenzy.

As a kid my parents couldn’t afford new clothes for me. In my twenties I got into buying new clothes after working my first professional job. Eight years later and here I am with a shopping addiction. I don’t even have Instagram but I still love fashion and it’s a struggle not to shop. After Covid though, I mostly stay in my apartment and wear sporty and comfy clothes. I’ve been really evaluating my spending habits and realizing I need to stop . Habits are hard to change though but taking baby steps. This world pandemic has made me realize what’s really important and how little things I need to survive and be happy. I think I shop hoping to be happy but what really brings lasting happiness?? That’s a question I can spend all my life refining.

I really liked your video and your personal perspective. I got a designer bag ( second hand first and last one 😂 ) not long ago and I’m planing on keeping and wearing it all the time but I won’t be jumping on the next thing. So I agree with your first point. What do you think about luxury bags? I also don’t like influencers that show new things all the time and try to sell you stuff and I think KZread/Instagram are getting worst and worst supporting compulsive shopping. Also, there’s not point in wearing the same things that other people wear, if you truly have a personal style, getting trends that fit your style and classic at the same time are the way to go.I think people on their 20’s are buying a lot of clothes that will only wear one time and onto the next which is really sad and polluting the world 😢

Handbags are my holy grail so I love to swoon over them and I think if I ever invested in one it would be exactly how you have! Buy one secondhand and that is classic and you know you're going to keep forever! My personal favourites are the Lady Dior (medium size) or a classic chanel flap!

I actually really like following some 'influencers', but I do get a bit annoyed that they will be on Instagram stories everyday and almost never in the same clothes. It's very well planned to get people to ask where the new top or shorts are from. They attach a link and then of course get a cut in the sale. I get it, it's their job, but that lifestyle is very unsustainable and encourages people to over buy and always need something new. I really do enjoy following them though, I just don't buy things I dont absolutely need. Great video!

You should do more content like that. It resonated with me. I started watching content producers on Intagram and KZread later in life, I have a more discerning eye when it comes to knowing I’m being sold something! You mentioned how seeing an item everyone wears makes it less rare. For most part, it is false scarcity. Smaller designers might not have a production line able to accommodate supply demand, but design brands like Supremes ( which i don’t get) definitely does and play on that scarcity to drive up their price. And it is a marketing ploy, just about money, nothing to do with fashion, sense of expression or love for the design as an art form. It is an industry, and as such should be regulated when it comes to marketing to children. Canada banned most toy commercials for this reason.. just saying!

From where I see it influencers just have a new platform and the cycle of fashion is happening faster. I am 65 and have been interested in fashion as long as I can remember. The thing about fashion is that it changes even when it is not necessary for it to do so. I think we as humans like to express ourselves and in so doing end up conforming more than we do being individual. Much of it has to do with status. Many are driven to show that they can have those exclusive thing and will sacrifice many other things to be able to walk out of the house and be seen in the things that only those of the highest status can obtain. My personal take on fashion is that I enjoy being able to dress in a way that is fun. I have never been a trend follower and have always been drawn to more classic and timeless styles, but that said even in my life those styles fade into being really dated, it just takes longer. I think that for me I am in my most happy place with style if I can be out doing what I enjoy and be comfortable but still have some self expression. The thing I do not like about fashion is how fast some things are dated.................that part is just not for me. Face it we wear clothes to protect us from the elements and I want to look good but still have things I can enjoy at least till they get worn out a bit.

Agreed! I think one of the most heinous things I have seen in the last few weeks are “luxury I am no longer into”. What’s wild is all their excuses are “everyone has it” when this was the very reason they started wearing it. (Somehow LV is surviving all these videos when it’s literally the worst offender of this made up influencer rule?). I am so sick of it. I get they are trend fashion influencers, but when the same people try to argue they have personal style. I personally can’t jump from Alessandro Michele to Daniel Lee, because my personal style and taste has always been OTT like Michele. I think it’s much more sustainable and classic to just have your own personal style (no matter what it is) and fine to inject trends, but to toss away luxury items the way people are now doesn’t make it special anymore.

  • @byerinelizabeth

That's exactly how I feel about all the luxury stuff now. The shelf life seems so short which is crazy because they're such an investment. I think the next one that will be added to the luxury I am no longer into will be all the Bottega Veneta pieces (shoes, pouch bags, woven bags) because I've literally seen them everywhere so I'm sure by next year or the year after it will be old news.

I don’t think Influencers are ruining fashion. I think the fashion industry is capitalizing on Influencers who are highly marketable. There are people who prefer to keep up with trends and there people who can afford luxury fashion, which is fine. A few years ago, I’d prefer trendy items. Now, I prefer focusing on evolving my personal style, which is why I follow your channel. I totally agree with you; the younger generation is easily influenced by what they see on social media and don’t realize that having the same designer shoes as a high profile Influencer may not be realistic for them. Going back to the luxury fashion, the idea of sustainable fashion is great and meaningful. Sustainable fashion can also be incredibly expensive and easily fall into the luxury fashion category. When I see an Influencer advising sustainable brands, I watch the price points of the items that they are selling. For an example, I prefer to watch Influencers who promote thrifting instead of those Influencers who promote overly priced “sustainable” brands. I’m at a point where I can filter out the “buy this and buy that” noise. Even if an Influencer I like promotes a pricey sustainable brand, I will focus on the style component and buy only what I can afford. For many of us, we want to find what works and what matters to us. The fashion industry will continue to focus primarily on trends and follow where the money is. For them, who sells their products the best will always matter most.

Love how you put this! Money always goes where attention goes and the influencer bubble is where it's at for them. It's such a great way for brands to market, which is why they do it. I think as we get older we can really see what's important for us and tune out a lot of the noise but for younger generations it's a lot harder.
