Are Hyenas Related To Dogs Or Cats? | Did You Know Thursday #18

Are hyenas related to dogs or to cats? Do you know the answer?
I had a lot of fun digging up facts for this one, and as soon as I put this video together I realised it went into the finer details of how a hyena may be related to a dog or a cat. I hope that my explanation of taxonomy makes it a little easier to understand.
Let me know what you think about Hyenas and if you'd reclassify them.

    I also read somewhere where they say the other main difference is the tongue f the hyena. They say it looks more like that of big cats with tiny bony plates on the surface to help strip flesh off the bone of the prey. They say canines don't have them. This video does not really explain why they classify hyenas as feliformia. Maybe I'm slow, I don't know. But I still can't get it.

    I remember hearing that the ardwolf...hyena in an old dictionary was a Genus Canis...but I'd assume since it was documented in 1820's it may be outdated compared to new studies. So I see why people think it's related to a dog. It's probably very closely related or its own category but for simplicity it's better to compare it to the Felis or Canis depending on the context. I suppose it bot having claws may also issue why they called it a canus back then also.

Where as The Encyclopaedia Britannica Vol-12 from 1768 just calls it the Genus "Hyaena" (Page 8) I mean I feel your deduction was still on point regardless. Funny how the people back then said "The animal is nocturnal in habits and has an unearthly cry, aptly compared to demoniac laughter." (Pg.8 / Paragraph 2) LOL! Demonic, but anyway yeah I'm sure most ethologist of today have better equipment for studying the behavior of these animals. I do like old dictionaries and such as they are more detailed than our modern library of information. Especially since they have records of animals before certain species were extinct. This could have been a 10 minute video by simply explaining why hyenas are considered felidae and not canidae. As you hinted at there is a genetic component that mainly involves their teeth and specialized diets. Canindae have large unsepcialized teeth, making them useful for a generalized diet that requires chewing and grinding in addition to tearing flesh. Felidae have specialized teeth for crushing large bones and have the strictest meat only diet among the carnivorous mammals.

Same thing with raccoons and bears, we are not sure if they share close common ancestor than how are dogs and bears or even cats.

    All of what you’re saying is very true. However, they are not strict scavengers. The Spotted Hyena is a very capable and frequent hunter, and only scavenges when the need and or opportunity arises. Even Brown Hyena does a fair amount of hunting. It isn’t their looks or habits that make them more related to cats. Scientists have discovered that genetically they are more related to cats than dogs. They are indeed in their own family, but that family falls under the same sub-order (feliformia) as cats.🤠

    Morphologically (appearance-wise), they are more similar to dogs. However, genetically, they are closer to cats than to dogs. Also, lions scavenge more often from spotted hyenas that the other way around, with spotted hyenas hunting around 50-95% of their own prey.

    I still don't get it. I do understand the classification story. But, in terms of behaviour. Felines always catch their prey by claws and canines by teeth. That on its own shows where the hyena is leaning towards. The canine family. Like all canines, hyenas live and hunt in packs. Only the alpha pair bare puppies (not cubs) and the rest of the pack members help raise the puppies. This behaviour is only found in canines. I think scientists missed something.

  • @SafariWian

    @SafariWian

    3 жыл бұрын

    Well, there are a lot of similarities in their behaviour that lean both ways. Both felines and canids need their teeth to kill their prey, regardless of how they catch it. And although it isn’t found in other big cat species, as far as I know, Lions hunt, live and breed in groups. Only the dominant pair gets to mate and reproduce and the rest of the pride helps to hunt and protect the cubs. But I do understand where you’re comings from. I think what scientists just discovered, is that on a genetical level Hyenas are more cat than dog and so behaviour had nothing to do with the decision to classify then as such. It’s all very interesting🤠
