Are Gen Zs F*%king Up The Workplace? | Singapore, Unfiltered

Is Gen Z the worst generation of workers ever? Strawberry, entitled, full of excuses-the list of accusations go on.
In a friendly(ish) battle over table tennis, Gen Zs and seasoned older employees ping-pong their thoughts about the right work ethics we need to see today. From adequate compensation to mental well-being, can the intergenerational quarrel be quelled?

Here are some of my 2cents 1. OT is not normal. OT is done only if rushing deadlines/ customer request.OT is to be paid MORE hourly than normal hours. 2. If OT too frequently, its a sign company needs to employ more. If nothing is done dont be suprised of burned out staff. 3. OT != good performance / deserve bonus. Bonus should be given for QUALITY OF WORK. 4. Mental health and health issues does affect work, so if u arent able to perform, take mc/leave or even leave the company. Health above work always. If work is causing your mental health to detoriate, LEAVE.

3:08, if your whole company got 20 people taking mental health breaks you should look into the problem. They from the same department? Under the same in-charge? Thats how you move on from there. The problem is obviously with the company at that point.

im pretty sure the " uncle's " life is more content than most younger generations these days. The problem is younger generations don't have the discipline and self responsibility to themself or to anyone. They are usually the first batch of people will bail if things get tough or uncomfortable for them. spending too much time on social media , constantly comparing for likes and validations. wanting to be famous on tik tok . Downright an insecure generation

"OT/off in-lieu feels very entitled... The team's job is to make the company money". If the company only treats employee as a money making tool, and not think of people needs - family, then I guess the company is self entitled too.

  • @Thescarletbitxh

That traditional mindset is outdated. If uncle looked at the increasing rates of mental health issues, workplace abuse, suicides, and employee welfare, he might change his mind about the way he runs the company. Without a strong and healthy team working and fighting for the company, there wouldn't be a company to begin with. It's no longer about resilience. Quality over quantity. We've decided as the younger generation to set healthy boundaries at work and at home. Disrespect towards job scope and your employees just because you're "executive" is not an excuse to call before and past working hours, dump extra workload that's clearly not in the written jobscope contract. I feel like the uncle is the type to call everyone weak just because they're unwilling to tolerate abuse from upper management. Gen Z is doing what should've been done a long time ago. Respect and cherish your employees and you won't have high turnover rates and you will have a company that succeeds past expectations. If you have high turnover rates, maybe you should look into your company's work ethics and how they treat people and how they manage people and not call the younger generation "less resilient".

I have received many compliments, appreciative thoughts and small gifts for my work but this will never even the scales. The amount of time sacrificed to build someone's mansion is better used to build your own. As the boss said, employee's should think as a team to perform and earn money for the company, similarly the company should view themselves as benefactors to their employee's for doing so but the latter is not the case. They dont value staff they way they used to and the generation does not operate as it used to just from the fact that we need way more just to survive nowadays.

It's called a "performance" bonus, not an "attitude" bonus. The gentleman in orange is exactly what's wrong with old bosses these days. Simply just can't keep up with time. This kind of boss are also the ones that whine about how hard it is to hire (and retain) people, let alone talents. If employees calling it a day after doing what they are paid to do is considered "bad attitude", then clearly you're not a good boss either. If you want your employees to do more than they are supposed to, the least you could do is compensate accordingly. At the end of the day, they are just trying to make a living from 9-6 and get back to their family and friends afterwards. They don't owe you anything afterwards beyond office hours. If you constantly need people to OT, maybe consider that your business is taking in more than you can handle? Maybe hire more people? Sometimes it's not that the employees are not good enough. Sometimes, it's because of terrible bosses like the gentleman in orange. I pray for the wellbeing of whoever is working for this fella. They deserve better. Ladies and gentlemen, your company can easily replace you with a snap of a finger. But you can't get back the time you lost with your loved ones.

I hope everyone working for that uncle is doing well mentally, emotionally, and physically. If not, please take care of yourself and LEAVE. We work to live, not live to work. We should always have time outside of work for our own lives, spending time w family and friends, and more importantly taking care of ourselves. There are plenty of jobs out there who will appreciate your efforts compared to this boomer boss. Now 2022 already, he thinks it’s still 2009. Find leaders who are aware and appreciative, not bosses who are discouraging and forceful. You must remember, an employee can be replaced quickly when they’re gone, so don’t slog your life away for a company who don’t see your true value and efforts. ^ Just me and my Gen Z opinion cos we know how to speak up and not settle for less in the already harsh adulting world

I think largely it is also that gen z’s don’t tolerate bullshit from their bosses or having to deal with authoritative figures. As a gen z myself, I feel that we have standards that we have been up-keeping since birth in sg (from education, tuition, how to behave etc.) passed to us by our predecessors so whatever they lacked in the past, they also passed us this knowledge.. so I guess in some way we are speaking up to old beliefs and unjust work treatments?

Mental health is expensive but I think if you have a strong mental health issue there are a lot of resources out there to try to find some inexpensive help to try to atleast get some temporary help while you try to secure funding. Your health is important and taking the time, although it can be challenging, to find some level of help is better than no help. I am a millennial and I believe gen z response to “ I cannot get help if I have clinician depression” is an excuse. Again With the rise of mental health awareness there have been more resources available, and taking not taking the time to try to find some form of atleast a clinical diagnosis is an excuse. I am not dismissing it being challenging to find given the money in mental health but there are more non profits and resources than before to atleast give a good starting point to deal with mental health . To gen Z’s point I think jobs should offer more mental health benefits which might help with the stability of a company and appeal to gen z and millennials who prioritizes it. Old work settings where people just push through has some grit and merit but i think striving to create a better work environment can be conducive for everyone! I applaud gen z for having high expectations for healthy work environments however I believe they lack the work ethic necessary to achieve it. Nothing happens over night and in order for change to happen from years of bad work practices you have to be willing to do the work to help put the transition in place. It’s a team effort from all generations but everyone has to take accountability and contribute to a better society. My issue with gen z is that it anytime they see an issue or confrontation or a hard struggle they are quick to abandon ship. If everyone abandons ship who will stay and fight/build a better future. In life you will have struggles you can’t avoid them but learning healthy ways to push through them and make better space for your peers, those who you lead and a generation behind you is what it’s about. True victory means no selfish from all generations but understanding and unity. Thank you to all participants of the video and whomever set up this virtual discussion great video.

Uncle gonna struggle hard to get employees if he keeps up that mentality. Your older staff are hitting retirement age and you need to depend on millennials and gen Z to take over. If you don't cater to their needs, your company won't be standing for long. It could be the most profitable company but if it cannot attract and retain staff, it's just a matter of time before it closes. Look at giant companies like Google, Microsoft, Facebook for example. They are adapting their staff benefits to changing demands to attract and retain employees. If giant businesses like them are kicking out old habits, what more for smaller businesses? Why would anyone choose your company over them if they had the choice? The only employees you will be getting are those with no choice and they are certainly not going to work as hard for the little amount of benefits you are providing.

It is not about which generation the employees or employers is in but rather the mentality of a person that matters. Not having effective and constructive communication is the key to have all those problems. Besides, the lack of active listening skills and being judgemental just make the situation worse. Occasional OT is fine but consistent OT just show that more staffs are needed. And, bonus shouldn't be tied to the number of OT people willing to do. Sorry Uncle, you are not only outdated but you lack ethics and professionalism. You don't make a good leader/boss too with your short-sightedness for not grooming a team who are willing to work for you. And, you are also self entitled to think that it's okay not to pay bonus with your spelled out criteria. To make matter worse, you stigmatised the group of people with mental health. Regardless of how many employees with mental health issues you have hired, doesn't justify how much you know about them. Mental health is a silent illness. I suggest you need to make friends with mental health medical professionals. For the another boss, it just show that you have poor people management skill if you need that one person to complete a job. Without him, your company or team can't function. You don't have backup plan to cover those in absence. And, if all your employees need to take mental health break all at one go, it again show your poor management skill. If your employee turnovers is high, it also show how lousy the boss and/or culture of the company. In addition, learn from the big corporation with ethic. Reflection goes both ways. Don't pay $1,000 and expect him to generate $100,000 income. I am not from Gen Z.

Both sides have their merits. We owe it to Gen-Zs for the shift in attitudes in the workplace we're increasingly seeing - which is a good thing now that more people are vocal about respecting personal-work boundaries; but at the same time we really shouldn't be discounting what the guy in orange says. I don't agree with some of what he says, but at the same time he also makes sense in some of his points. Comments on here that say - oh if you have a whole department of people with mental health issues then the problem lies with your company - kinda shows how superficial certain people think. Are we really going to assume everyone's mental health issue is caused by the workplace? That people cannot have mental health issues stemming from other causes like domestic/personal relationships? Not that I know, but when that orange boss said he has 3 employees with clinical depression, I wonder if anyone even paused to think perhaps he hired them _despite_ their mental health issue? If he doesn't keep them in his company, is he gonna be called out for not being more inclusive? And if 3 people in a department wants to take a break on the same day because of supposed mental health issues, who's going to pick up their load? Colleagues, no? And if (I stress the if here) this happens regularly, resentment is bound to happen. These people who are picking up their loads are going to start asking questions like why they are getting the same pay as the ones with mental health issues but taking on their loads; never mind that, in fact, they are going to demand more pay in any case because they are doing more. At the end of the day, you have less people trying to hit the company's goals, leading to burnouts because they are taking on more load and eventually resulting in people leaving en masse. The answer is not as simple as - oh why don't you just extend the deadline or hire more people - having been on both sides, it's not always as straightforward. People picking up others' loads? Either increase their pay or give them off-in-lieus. But you're still hitting what was the company's original KPI. Extend the deadline? It's not something you can always do that but sure, that means you close the project later. Less projects, less money for the company. Hire new people? Sure, but bear in mind the concept of diminishing returns is real and scaling a company is not as easy as people think it is. Ultimately, these solutions I see come at the cost of potential profits which affects the company's performance and in turn potential bonus for the employees and then what? Complain the company isn't paying well or have shitty bonus and then leave. It's a cycle. Probably gonna draw flak for this but sometimes, the truth hurts. Don't @ me lol.
