Are Brazil Nuts Radioactive?

Ғылым және технология

Many foods are naturally radioactive.
This is quite common and nothing to be worried about.

The banana equivalent is stupid propaganda. Potassium is water soluble and rapidly cycled from the body. A particle of similar activity can stay in the lungs or bones forever, causing a much higher exposure.

I once cleaned my uranium glazed plate with a paper towel and Ethanol. After finishing the towel was reading 10 to 11 times above background. So the glaze is not stable and decomposes. Maybe something like Metamictization in the glaze?

Would a Geiger counter be sufficient for testing radioactive fracking samples? Like water, fracking waste, air during flares, near tankers tanks, pipes with residue, etc...? If so, would you suggest the Inspector model with or without wand? Commonly found in state test results are radium 226, 228, thorium 232, uranium 234, 235, 236, 238 and some others. Have you ever tested Sunflower Seeds from the store ? I looked thru alot of your videos and hadn't seen one. I know sunflowers are being used to clean up radioactive sites and my concern is its in their seeds. After 2011 they disappeared from shelves in all stores then about 4 years later slowly started making a comeback. Though all the old brands are gone and its only in bulk. I have feared eating them ever since 2011 and I need to know if they are safe to consume in large quantities? Sorry for the book but Any input would be great

Hey antiprotons, I like your videos. Can u explain how half-life works in relation to levels of radiation. Like if a substance has a really long half life is it less radioactive than something with a short half-life? My understanding is that only when the atomic decay happens the radioactivity is emitted. Therefore it would stand to reason that if the half life was long say 100,000 years that there would be less radiation than say a substance with a 6 hour half life. But that would make substances with a really long half-life less dangerous and yet people still are warned away from the chernobyl disaster and I thought the halflife of that fallout at chernobyl was like 4 billion years or something.

There is a kind of “strange” calibration. K40 is around channel 600 (1460 keV), Pb214 is around 300 (352 keV). Is it really so non-linear? I think that around channel 256 you have 511 keV peak, which is common for lead shield. What you marked as 352 is most probably 609. 185 is 242, 242 is 352, and actual 295 is barely (but still) visible. Radium peak is hard to see with such sample and equipment.

    > That's why science is the best method for truth and answers... Gonna have to object here, slightly. Science is the best method for discovering facts about and in the natural world to a very high degree of probability, as close to truth as one can get. But this is not the case for everything. The statement above itself is a classic example of something that is inherently outside of the domain of science. Put differently, "facts are true if and only if they are scientific facts" is not a statement that can be proven by any scientific method and is thus self defeating.

Natural radiation is harmless, except in very large doses. However, to say that there is zero man-made radiation in any plant matter is incorrect. Since Fukushima, and to a FAR lesser extent, Chernobyl (and other nuke sources) there are traces of that gunk in ALL plants.

@antiprotons - Tom, I was told that only the GammaScout Geiger counter is reliable for testing food for radioactivity, because it's the only Geiger counter that checks all 3 kinds of radioactivity harmful to people & animals. I believe, even the gamma spectrometer only tests for 1 kind - gamma radioactivity. Good that you've added ads. Perhaps you'll be able to afford a GammaScout Geiger counter. They're over $500 for one. A radiation specialist that worked near Fukishima after 3-11-11 encourages testing food with a GammaScout at the market before buying. You can find her videos by searching KZread for: Leuren Moret radiation or leurenmoret.info. If you get a GammaScout, perhaps you can take it to the supermarket and test all foods, item by item. However, I get the feeling your parents probably work at a nuclear facility or something, as your videos all seem to be saying nuclear radiation is not harmful. I suppose humans DO have an innate natural ability to protect themselves from any harm, if they believe they can and strive to develop that ability. I heard non-organic companies are irratiating bananas and thought maybe that's why they're radioactive. After searching for anyone who's checked this, looks like I'd have to get a GammaScout myself, and take it to the nearest company that irradiates bananas or other food, & test the food before & after irradiation & mark down the difference, before & after to find out anything. It always seems like I'm the only one to think logically in a helpful way about things, meaning I have to do EVERYTHING that's worthwhile doing. It would be nice if there were lots of people doing HELPFUL logical things so 1 person doesn't have to do everything.

I use the SEI Inspector USB, like the one in this video. Mine is the 2nd version (v. 2.13), which is blue, not black. The 1st version had a firmware issue and a battery drain issue, it I remember correctly. The SEI Ranger is the newer model, although it's very similar. I love my SEI Inspector USB Geiger-Müller counter! Ludlum also makes great instruments, too! Gamma Scout is overpriced. I don't even know what it's calibrated to. I think americium-241. SEI instruments are calibrated to cesium-137. So are Ludlum G-M counters.
