Are Booleans Really This Simple? (Blender Tutorial)

Booleans tend to be used incorrectly and cause quite a bit of confusion. This tutorial will help you understand how simple they really are.

Mate I was taught by a Game character creator. He did teach other things of cause. Taught how to use blender. I have been wanting to make objects. Things were going ok but the flow seemed complex. I saw one of your hard surface vids while back and thought naa, that looks weird and totally strange to me. Later I watched a few more your older videos (I learnt back when blender was 2.79) and seeing I use older blender, they were worth a look. Decided to try some of your vanilla tutorial videos and wow I caught on fast. Been watching more and playing around with hard surface more and more. Amazing how fast i can make base meshes now and cleared up a lot of shading and art problems through better understanding. Can't thank you enough. All the best man.

would subdividing prevent booleans messing up a models normals, when modeling curved surfaces with booleans my normals keep getting weird , or is it some sort of other error

So is a Boolean a cloaked area that interacts (presses/imprints into) with a surface as opposed to actually modifying the surface you are working on?

I always ALWAYS use collections for these operations. Completely non-destructive for architectural projects. Fantastic.

I watched a lot of videos but there is a thing that i can’t understand. We all agree that for example a bent quad will have shading problems because it will be interpreted as two triangles, BUT if a make a circular cut through a cilinder that on the side is made of long quad faces i’m not moving the cilinder faces at all, but i am getting shading issues. Yes there are ngons but ngons on flat faces doesn’t cause shading issues. Just to be clearer: the cutter on cilinder causes ngons (that are fine on flat faces) but does not move the cilinder faces because it’s only cutting them, so why i get those shading problems if the faces stay still? Sorry for the English i am Italian

When you cut a cylinder the cutter vertices and the cylinder needs to match. what is happening is the curvature of the cylinder you cut is changed due to the vertices added. I use an offset cut on surfaces to ease the shading. so I have a cut that is larger than the cutter that way the shading issues are contained within that area. the second thing I do is check where the boolean connects. if it is connceted at a wierd angle I now know that it will cause problems down the line so I fix those before hand. the final thing is having more lines close to the offending area. (Edit ->>>) Also do not forget to add more lines to your cutter as well if you are going the cutter route

My problem with booleans is the topo cleaning part. Its even worse for when I use bevels because then I completely shit the bed. I make game assets, for context.

yeah, and that's why you I believe you shouldn't really use them.... the amount of time these guys waste on topology clean ups in their videos is crazy.. especially when they claim it's 'only' a concept 🤣

The wise move is to not stick to one program, with polygonal modeling programs, use programs that utilize nurbs modeling or whatever it's called, like plasticity, very affordable and VERY promising, you boolean and bevel freely with almost no care

Thank you in advance for your time. Hello, my name is Ali and I have been learning the 3d for about 1 year , and I have the ability to work and make 3D models with Cinema 4d, substance painter, ZBrush, Rizom uv. I want to start creating my profile, I am interested in doing concept modeling for games, for example, swords, tanks or guns, in fact, I like Hard surface modeling, I saw several courses in the field of preparing models for games and I am interested in this path, I don't know for making Should I choose high-resolution models for my porofile or focus on simpler models for Android or iOS games, at the same time, my goal is to be able to get clients as a freelancer, I hope someone can help me so that I can do this. May I be rescued and start my journey as soon as possible.

Quite instructive but one thing annoys me a bit in your latest videos : is it about Blender or about you ? I'd like to see more Blender views rather than you staring at the camera.

whoa whoa, hold up, Blender bros dont take any criticism,(if you remember recent reddit thing about them) both of them are super arrogant and its just "everything we know and do is right" attitude. they are just wanna be influencers and want to upsell their courses via luring you into free course where they just make shapes that makes no sense for any real production work.

@@thodajyadahogaya6016 hahaha I don't use Reddit, but that is pretty spot on...I have learn't useful stuff from both of them, but I've also realised I'm wasting my time following a lot of their stuff...neither of them have a solid background in 3d and are just winging it like the rest of us...
