Are 4K Discs Region Free? And Do You Need A Multi-Region 4K Player? | Back to Basics #8

Фильм және анимация

Discussing region coding on 4K discs and whether or not a multi-region 4K player is necessary. This video is #8 in a series called "Back To Basics," where I discuss fundamental issues of interest to those in the early phases of their physical media journey. Think of it as sort of a "Collecting 101" series, with special emphasis on 4K UHD.

    Great info Fuzz - and thanks for shoutout on my hack vid for region locked viewing on the Panasonic Ub820. I wanted to make that vid for the exact reason you call out. The Panasonic UB820 is a GREAT PLAYER and is already expensive in its own right without the region free compatibility. I know it CAN’T be stated that the regular Panasonic UB820 will ALWAYS work with the hack, but the “programming” to allow it to clearly is inside the software. That hack “confuses” the player to allow region locked Blu-ray’s to play. Some have had issues in my comments of that vid making it work, but I often wonder if they are doing it right. For me, it’s worked every time and I play and own a fair amount of region locked Blu-ray’s. So for anyone that checks it out, has the Panasonic UB820, and wants a “potentially” all in one great 4k player that can mostly always play region locked discs…give it try! But great vid once again my man! Great content for those looking to really get into the heart of the hobby. 👍🏼

    Thank you my friend! Yeah I've got it in my mind that the hack probably works most of the time if one is patient with it. The thing I liked the most about your video was how you suggested that if it doesn't work after pressing the Top Menu button a couple times, to keep pressing it and seeing if you can "fool" the system into playing the disc. I tend to agree with you that maybe when others tried it with no success, they just weren't as persistent about pressing the button repeatedly until it kicks in. But I've been very happy with my Panasonic player. In fact, a funny thing happened to me when I got my Invasion USA region B German blu ray disc. I went to play it fully expecting to have to do the hack... and it played fine without me even needing to do the hack! So I haven't run into any discs where I've needed to use it yet. The UB820 units are great players.

    Must admit, find it baffling to release region free 4K along with a region locked blu-ray (with a variety of extras). I can never understand why you would want to lock the extras such as the 'making of' or 'the restoration techniques etc' docs. I guess it is the licensing or the rights given by the various people involved but it does seem very limiting.

    I live in France and I'm one of those people who imported "The People Under the Stairs" and ended up being locked. I own a 4K Oppo player and a Sony region free Blu-Ray and DVD, but after discovering the issue with some 4K's being region locked, I profited from my last visit to the USA to buy a Panasonic 4K player... So now I'm covered, I put my old Sony in my office, and in my living room I use 2 players (what I've always done) and now I'm covered.

    Scream/Shout didn't mean to region lock both "People Under the Stairs" and "Brotherhood of the Wolf", but since they are so damn stubborn in not wanting to go outside the US borders they didn't care enough to do a replacement program for them. You'd be surprised at how many people that actually think it's absolutly impossible to region lock a 4k disc... They clearly don't get that it's more or less just a simple bluray disc with more space. If you have a 4k player that is region free for blurays, then you're good for 4k region locked discs too... I have both of the mentioned scream/shout titles and they play fine on my 4k player even though they are region a locked.

    Hey Fuzz, I have the same panny as you and the hack works on some not all region locked blu-rays. I have region B "Strange Days" and the hack worked but didn't on "There Will Be Blood". The only difference was the disc keeps spinning on the Strange Days region lock screen and the disc did not spin on There Will Be Blood region lock screen. So I think the type of region lock a studio uses may make a difference. Thanks again for the awesome content.👍

    That's one thing I liked about Ken's video on the Panasonic hack... he indicated that sometimes it's possible to get around any discs that are not working with the hack by continuing to press the Top Menu button repeatedly (I think the original hack instructions say to just press it once or twice... but Ken found that if he just kept pressing that Top Menu button repeatedly, it will eventually bypass the region locking and start playing). So I'm wondering if maybe you could still get it to work with There Will Be Blood? Thanks for watching!

    Yeah that's to be expected with 4k... especially with OLED panels, from what I understand. The 4K image will seem dimmer. i think this is due in part to the high dynamic range. It takes a little getting used to... for some, a few settings tweaks may be required to get the picture you want in 4K (I use my own custom image settings in my 4K player for brightness, contrast, etc... also the HDR Optimizer in my Panasonic UB820). The HD TV may seem brighter, but the 4K image will have more depth and pop than an HD source.

    Maybe someone pressed the button by accident, when making those 4K's 😅! There is also the possibility it was a licensing/rights issue. Another strange instance is somewhat related, being ARROW. They are a UK company with a US branch. The US branch was allowed to release The Warriors & Barbarella 4K SE's, but you couldn't buy it in the UK (import only), because of licensing according to ARROW. The 4K discs are supposedly region free, but the Blu-rays are region locked 'A'. Go figure! It's also interesting regards Blu-rays, as some are region free or multi-region, so it shows that it's selective, but can be done. I think your player option of 4K region free Blu-ray & 4K region locked Blu-ray is best. It gives you redundancy/backup, and comparative capability. My preference is the Panasonic UB820 & UB9000 respectively, the latter with warranty intact...

  • @TheOriginalFuzz

    @TheOriginalFuzz

    5 ай бұрын

    Yeah the situation you're describing with Arrow has everything to do with the licensing rights they were granted. Arrow may have the rights to release certain titles in the UK, but not the US, and vice versa. Different labels hold the rights to any given title depending on the country or region. So if Arrow releases a title in the US but not UK, that may mean that another company has the rights in the UK, and Arrow was only allowed to release it in the US. Licensing can get very complex, and the rights can vary per country, region or even format (4K vs. blu ray). Thanks for watching and weighing in!

    I don't know enough about the PS5 myself in that regard... in terms of region compatibility. However, you may also want to consider just buying something like a multi-region modified Sony X700 4K player instead (you can play discs from all regions on it). That's what I have. It costs a bit more than the standard region-locked X700, but it's still gonna be cheaper than a PS5 (unless you're also into gaming and looking for a gaming console). But I can tell you this... for movies, I think you might be better of with a dedicated player than a gaming console device. You'll have a lot more control over the tweaking the image if you get a dedicated player instead. Plus, the PS5 doesn't have Dolby Vision for discs, if that is something you want to be able to access. I did a quick search on Amazon Australia for the multi-region version of the Sony X700, and it says they don't have it available. But perhaps you can find this unit at another electronics outlet in your area (sorry, I'm not too familiar with Australian businesses. Does JB HiFi sell 4K players? If so they might have this unit as well... just make sure it's the multi-region modified version, and not the region-locked version). But this is what I use for playing discs from other regions: www.amazon.com.au/Sony-X700-System-100-240V-Multi-System/dp/B07B7Q9RHY Hope this helps a little bit. Thanks for watching!

    Yes it should cover any of those discs, any region (the units come with instructions on how to change regions). With my Sony X700, you have to manually change the region, but it's super easy... you just eject the tray and press a button (a color corresponding to the region I want), and then you're good to go. It's been real handy having these capabilities for certain European blu rays (in my case). I haven't personally encountered any 4K discs locked to other regions, but my Sony player will play them if I ever do -- it can handle pretty much any disc I throw at it, in terms of compatibility. With the Sony players, you can even play SACD discs on them, I believe.

    Oh I just realized you said standard edition 4K... it says on their website that it's region-free. Have you tried playing the disc yet? secondsightfilms.co.uk/products/high-tension-limited-edition-4k-uhd-pre-order-available?_pos=2&_sid=bc77dc924&_ss=r

    @TheOriginalFuzz I tried playing it last night and it said that I need a region b player. I found it strange since 4Ks are region free. I got the It Follows also the standard 4K and that plays with no problem

    @@moviecollector623 Oh that sucks man! Second Sight screwed up, it sounds like. It must've been some kind of mistake specific to that title, because it even says region-free on their listing (and their other 4Ks are always region-free, I think. The titles I have from them have all played fine too). Weird. But really disappointing as well.

    One video i want to see in your channel is about 8k blu rays. What are your thoughts about it? Is it coming in the future?

  • @TheOriginalFuzz

    @TheOriginalFuzz

    That's a good idea... although it would probably be a fairly short video, because I don't really think 8K is going to happen for disc-based physical media. I tend to think 4K is the end of the line for discs. We may get some 8K digital content, but most people wouldn't even be able to see the difference -- since the human eye has limits to what it can see/perceive. The more I think about it, I guess there are a number of different reasons as to why I don't think 8K is going to be practical or realistic as a physical format (especially not for older catalog movies, where I think we'd be dealing with diminishing returns)... so I'll have to chew on that and see if I can come up some kind of angle for a video. It might make for a good Back to Basics installment, since I know a lot of people just assume 8K discs will be next... which I imagine may, in turn, impact current physical media purchasing decisions for some. Thanks for the tip/feedback, and thanks for watching!

    I own a Panasonic UB820 player and the region free hacks I looked up on reddit don’t work at all (ie press stop then top menu a bunch of times) . Am I doing something wrong?

  • @TheOriginalFuzz

    Funny you should mention that, as I just used the hack last night to watch my new region B blu ray of Strange Days. The hack worked like a charm, but you may have to kind of play around with it to get it to work. I haven't been able to get it to work for every region B disc I've tried... but it's worked for probably about 90 percent of alternate region discs I've tried. The only movie where it didn't work for me was an 88 Films label release. Every other disc I've tried though has worked fine with the UB820 hack. I'll provide a better link for you below that may help... But here's what I do: Pop the disc in and play it. Once the region incompatibility message comes up, then I press the "Stop" button once, and then immediately press the "Top Menu" button about 5-8 times, rapidly (usually right around 7 times for me). You'll see the entire screen go black, and once you do, stop pressing the Top Menu button (again, press it about 7 times and then let your finger up)... as soon as you stop pressing it, the movie's main menu should pop up. You're basically trying to "trick" the Panasonic UB820 into bypassing the region coding and taking you straight to the main menu. Sometimes you may need to press the Top Menu button a few more times... other times, you may only need to press it 4-5 times. But you can kind of tell when the machine is starting to bypass it, because the screen will be black, and then once you stop pressing the Top Menu button, it will kick you over to the main menu. So you just kind of have to work with it a little bit and see if you can "trick" the machine. But it won't necessarily work with every disc. I've just found it's worked with most alternate region discs I've tried... almost every time, so far. Check out this video my friend Ken did where he actually demos out this hack for us. You can actually see how it works on the screen, and he shows you what he's doing with the remote while the screen is also visible. Here's his vid on the hack: kzread.info/dash/bejne/m6mAs7CSlaq3l7A.html Thanks for watching! Hope this helps.

    Hi, I'm new to 4k bluray and only own a PS5 as a player, is that a good enough player or should I consider buying a dedicated player? if so do you have some not too expensive recommendations?

  • @TheOriginalFuzz

    @TheOriginalFuzz

    5 ай бұрын

    Well first off, welcome to the wonderful world of 4K! I think the PS5 works just fine when you're first starting out with 4K, but you may eventually want to go with a dedicated player (for multiple reasons), depending on how "into" the format you are. From what I understand, the PS5 and other gaming consoles use software encoding for 4K, rather than the hardware encoding that you'd get with a dedicated player. Also, the disc drives are better in dedicated players than what we find in gaming consoles. In other words, the drives will last longer in dedicated players. Basically, gaming consoles are intended primarily for gaming, with the added bonus of being able to play 4K discs. Whereas dedicated players are designed specifically for viewing movies. So you have better drives/hardware... plus you'll have more options for configuring the image with a dedicated player. For example, the PS5 does not have Dolby Vision when playing discs, whereas a dedicated player can allow you to enjoy DV capabilities. Also, you can make a lot more tweaks to the image with a dedicated player than you can on the PS5 (brightness, contrast, colors, etc.). So you just have more options in general with a dedicated unit then you'll have a with a PS5. But, like I said... when you're first starting out, the PS5 may work just fine for you for the short term. So I would say it's not necessarily critical to get a dedicated player right now, but if you're a big fan of movies and you're going to be watching a lot of 4K discs, then I definitely would recommend getting a dedicated player at some point down the line. As for player recommendations on a budget, I'd say the Sony X700 is the way to go. It's the best compromise between budget and performance. You can usually get them for $200 or less, and I think they provide a much better bang for the buck than we've seen with other cheaper players. But if your budget is a little higher, then I would recommend the Panasonic UB820. That's about a $400 unit, but it has become the industry standard for quality. I have both units (Sony and Panny), and both have been solid and very reliable units for me. I also have a video on my channel where I go over some settings you can use on the Sony X700 for best performance. I hope this helps a bit. Thanks for watching!

    Honestly, I don't really know anything about Verbatim 4K drives. i just know that the device you are using usually needs to be a multi-region compatible device. One of my dedicated 4K players (a Sony X700) is a multi-region-modified device. But I can't really speak to computer drives. If there is some way to get around the region coding in your drive, I'm not aware of what that is.
