Ladies and gentlemen, this is a small Swamp Cooler! Swamp coolers only work in dry climates. We have one in the SoCal desert and use it in addition to our two ACs. It works great here when days are sometimes 110 degrees, but don’t expect it to work in humid conditions.

That's right. Here in Phoenix we've had Swamp Coolers for many decades. If you can wet the cooler pads then put them in the freezer of course itll be very cold but that's just using your freezer as an airconditioner. The goofy guy in the video doesn't even need an AC. You have to live in a place where it's over 110F to understand. This little box will melt in Phoenix.

Just a quick thought and I might be wrong. The IR thermometer might be measuring the temperature of the blades not the air. This means that if the material absorbs the cold then it is lost from the air being blown out because some materiasl absorb temperature better than others. This might be why the temperature registers as warmer in the new model. Doesn't mean that the air has that temperature, but it might be a close enough approximation.

The thing with evaporative coolers is that the air needs to be hot and dry to start with. If your ambient humidity goes above 15 or 20%, they don't work well at all. I have a large one on top of my house and here in the southwest U.S., where the air is pretty dry (usually 12-18% humidity), I can keep the inside in the mid-70's even when it's 95+ outside!😉

I live in incredibly dry Las Vegas and the device does not seem to provide the wicking material with sufficient moisture to maintain the cooling effect. Right when I turn it on the cooling effect is dramatic. But then immediately the pads dry out. And the cold effect won’t come back unless I turn it off for a minute or resoak the pad

Coolers like this work according to two principles: simple airflow (the fan) and evaporative cooling (passing the airflow through a damp filter). Each can give a separate subjective sense of cooling, depending on the conditions. In this case, you were already in a room at standard "room temperature," so just moving more air faster will give you a sense of coolness. Therefore, the unit with the more powerful fan will seem to cool well, even if it doesn’t do much to drop the temperature (as the Ultra didn’t seem to be doing by more than a couple of degrees). Frankly, a strong table fan with a larger surface area of the blades and a more-powerful motor would probably seem to do an even better job. But, when you're in an overheated room (say, over 80 degrees), the roles get reversed. A stronger fan will simply push more hot, uncomfortable air at a higher speed. In that case, the cooler with the stronger evaporative cooling may seem to work better, as it will actually drop the temperature of the air it’s pushing out. It's a shame you couldn’t have conducted these tests in a really hot room, which is probably where most people will be using this. Based on the size of the filters (and, thus, the evaporative capacity), I'm guessing the original would do a better job, even if you had to have it only a foot or so away.

Question: What is the temp of the room that you tested these in? If the units are cycling air that’s already been cooled through regular AC, this would skew the test, as opposed to testing these in a room where the ambient temperature is in the mid 70’s (or higher).

Another note: traditionally evaporative cooler pads consist of excelsior (aspen wood fiber) inside a containment net. The excelsior is woven to allow space for air to pass through. If I was to have one built I would use plastics for the box, the longest-lasting fan possible with the same CFM as the Pure Chill, a wet/dry pump as I need to leave it running 24/7 for my hand so it dries out overnight (alternately add 25% to the water tank) and a pad the same depth as the Pure Chill, which is thinner than the Ultra, made of excelsior. The adjustable panel in the front is critical (my Pro version had the adjustable front) so I can point it straight down at my hand. I think all of this is critical for normal use as well.

I also tried one of those frozen plastic ice blocks to keep thing cool in your lunch bag/box ie... I'm wondering how much difference the was. I think the best way to make on of these to it full convenient is to have a refrigeration coil the fan blew through and build a water reservoir that would automatically shut off when reach to its capacity.

I'd argue that putting ice into it is also counterproductive. To make ice, you need to remove the heat from warm water using a freezer, which exhausts that heat into your room. The freezer isn't 100% efficient, so adding ice heats the room more than it cools it.

  • @esoxenvy3112

Just purchased a unit and it seems to work fairly well. The materials used seem flimsy and cheap, but cool air blows out just using tap water. Tried freezing the filter, and the air seems a little cooler blowing out. I'm thinking if you keep a few bottles of ice cold tap water in the fridge-freezer, you could frequently change the water during real hot temps for constant cool air. I sent for a second filter as well thinking that I could keep a second one in the freezer and rotate as needed. Maybe if on the road in a vehicle without AC (becoming rare these days), a little cooler with ice packs could hold extra ice water bottles and a cold filter or 2 to switch out or refill as needed. It's not sweltering hot yet here in early May, so we'll see what the real deal is in a month or two.

One other thing that I will point out for those that may not be aware is that this increases the humidity levels in the room as opposed to a typical a/c which removes moisture and lowers humidity. The increased humidity is not good for long term use especially in a closed space with poor circulation.

I didn't measure the temps but maybe you can see if you notice it as well.

Once your wet, or frozen, filter dries or thaws, it's a small fan. Fill an Igloo cooler with ice, open the lid and have a fan blowing across the ice. Have the drain plug emptying into ice cube trays. Have a valet, or your middle child, taking the filled trays to your freezer, and refilling the cooler with ice as needed and possible. Boom! Coolers come in many sizes, to suit your cooling or picnicking needs.

Indeed you are a rare gem to be so creative inventive and resourceful! I'm definitely returning this because it's just a waste of $139 as the noise is not a continuous sound but it rattles going up and down up and down and the regular Standalone fan is much more effective at blowing cool air. I'm going to return this and going to purchase a cooler instead and place it on a higher surface since our fan is very high up. Again thank you so much for the great advice!

Hey there John, I just watched your review on the Artic Air Ultra, I have to say I thought you were rather harsh. I purchased a the same product a yr or more ago and have used it daily during the hot months non stop. I live in So. Texas. Where the temps are passing 95° by 7:00 am and usually in the 104-109° by 2:00 pm. I was recently in the hospital for 5 days and nights. Both the staff and patients were complaining of the lack of A/C and coolness. My son brought my fan and yes it did make the room cooler. Several of the medical staff were impressed and spoke of purchasing a unit in their future. Thank you.

I just got my first Arctic Air a few days ago and I love it! It cools my bedroom by 15-20 degrees. It’s been very hot here in Colorado lately and I’m on the 3 floor of my apartment building.(top floor). I do freeze the filter but another thing I do is fill the water tank only half way then I add ice cubes so it goes just below the fill line. I turn it on 10 minutes before my boyfriend gets home and I shut the bedroom door. When he gets home he complains about the how hot it is then he goes into the bathroom and he’s in heaven. It is a bit noisy but box fans are way louder when turned up on high. At night when I’m going to sleep I will turn it so it faces anymore. Only because it helps with my hot flashes from menopause. But overall I really like it and I’m going to get a couple more for my living room because it’s real big. My bedroom is pretty big.

Try this- turn a fan on in your room. Stand somewhere not in the fans wind and take the temp. Now stand in the wind and take the temp- you'll be cooler in the wind- now put a bowl of ice right under the fan blades and see how cold it makes your room- and THAT will last for hours, depending on how much ice is in the bowl AND THAT'S FREE

I'm talking actually a room only 2.5m x 3m room by your bed side with the night weather temperature of approx 25 degrees. Then this will cool your room down to 22-23 for about an hour or so. That's it. Then it will stay maybe 23-22 degrees. Don't bother buying it & use it if the outside temperature is even past 27-30 degrees heat; or even during the day in your room. It will not work.

This is nothing more than a updated mini "Swamp Cooler" They work fairly well in areas where your Humidity is low but not in most areas. There was a time before A/C in cars where you could buy one to hook on the passenger door and it would, using out side air flow blow cooler air into the vehicle. Some even had an electric motor to assist in blowing moist air into the vehicle. They relied on evaporation to cool you down; At best they were marginal and really did not provide cooler air to the vehicle but the larger units did work in homes out west where it was dry, The problem is they also were prone to produce mold in your home.

Bought two units so I have two filters that I can freeze and swap out. I used them for about a week and started noticing a musty smell! I checked the manual and in maintenance section is tells you if you find mold or detect a musty smell soak the filter in a bowl or pot filled with a 50/50 solution of water and white vinegar for 45-60 minutes then rinse with warm water, wring it out then let air dry. I don’t quite understand how you can “wring out” a rigid block of plastic loaded with felt pads. I’m also concerned that if I don’t know I’m developing a mold or mildew problem until I smell it maybe that’s too late.
