Archetypal Astrology and the Evolution of Consciousness: from Anima Mundi to the Great Turning
Traditional astrology looked to the fully determined and eternally recurring cycles of the planets (and stars) for insight into the meaning of terrestrial events. Contemporary archetypal astrology, for its part, sets these cycles within a larger evolutionary context, which, if not strictly linear, can nevertheless be characterized by a singular, unrepeatable, and teleologically guided trajectory. Grounded in the paradigmatic research of Richard Tarnas, and drawing as well from his own integration of Hegel, Jung, and related integral streams of thought, Sean Kelly will explore some of the implications of the recasting of astrological categories in an evolutionary context. Particular attention will be brought to bear on the question of how archetypal astrology might assist us in understanding our unique, and critical, moment in what Joanna Macy and others describe as the Great Turning towards the possibility, at least, of a life-sustaining society. Sean Kelly, Ph.D., is professor of Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness at the California Institute of Integral Studies.. He is the author of Coming Home: The Birth and Transformation of the Planetary Era and Individuation and the Absolute: Hegel, Jung, and the Path toward Wholeness. Sean is also co-editor, with Donald Rothberg, of Ken Wilber in Dialogue: Conversations with Leading Transpersonal Thinkers and co-translator, with Roger Lapointe, of French thinker Edgar Morin's book, Homeland Earth: A manifesto for the New Millennium. Along with his academic work, Sean has trained intensively in the Chinese internal arts (taiji, bagua, and xingyi) and has been teaching taiji since 1990. His current interests focus on the intersection of consciousness and ecology in the Planetary Era.

Interesting work... Man has a choice. He can merge with a computer or explore his inner self and become the Phoenix he is. We do not evolve by looking outward.
The Moon is the fastest moving heavenly body, which signifies emotions. Our feelings are like the ocean, ebbing and flowing, up and down, high tide to low tide. However, one can polarize these ups or downs by understanding all the different aspects of our consciousness, which can be described by the various heavenly bodies (stars, planets, moon(s), and even asteroids).

Errata: I meant to say "homo sapiens", and not 'homo sapiens sapiens" (whose origins go back some 200K years, not 2 to 3 million as in the case of homo sapiens). Also, when I said that Hegel, Schelling, and Hoelderlin were students together in Stuttgart, I meant to say Tuebingen (I was thinking of Hegel especially, and the name of his birth place surfaced instead). Gaia has always been awake. She has proven for thousands of years that she is awake, with things like mushrooms and special cacti, and other profoundly amazing herbs and trees. It is HUMANITY that is waking up to Gaia.
I'm shocked Mr. Kelly doesn't see male or female sex in the Alex Grey image! The spirit-tree is woman (vertical axis) and the world-space is man (horizontal axis). The tree is covered with breasts! The vaginal third eye, the shadow cock penetrating with the homunculus on the alien serpent egg, and the vortex into the heart-core matrix are different portals. The generative act longing to be fulfilled, to create reality. I don't care for the picture tho, the message is too pessimistic and didactic. Seems to me like the artist was saying the rape of the land is the rape of the world-mind. Everything in it is distorted and curved like with a fish-eye lens. There is good stuff here about world rhythms corresponding to planetary transits, and the progressive flattening of world view, but the role of Christ in history is downplayed. Kelly sounds like he doesn't appreciate why the modern period could only have emerged out of Christianity and not from any other culture. It was doing something different with kingship spreading to the sovereign individual, and modern Faustian Civilisation is a response to / perversion of the Christ-impulse (the Crown Contagion). The western Ego thirsts for everything new, co-signing with the devil for planetary dominance - infinite extension - which is something the image by Alex Grey conveys somewhat, but it still feels bounded in Earth. There is a yearning for the virtual which I see as an irresistible seduction wherein Narcissus enters the myth of the Machine
