    Had my heart set on a Shibuya Ultima sight but then I got this great offer from another local archer. A whole Hoyt bow set with everything and a Sure Loc sight. Man, what a difference from shooting with a stupid Cartel sight that I was shooting with at the club. I'm quite new to the sport but I just wanted to let other new archers know that it's worth spending a bit more on your sight, cause those cheap sights are complete shit! (excuse my french). Everything comes loose and the adjustments are terrible. If you like the sport then I'd suggest saving up for a real sight. Either a mid-range or higher. If you are serious about the sport then I'd rather go for a great sight since it can last you nearly a lifetime. Sub to NUSensei. He gives good information and advice.

    I have just gone back to target archery after a 10 year rest, each time I start archery I start with cheap sights but then change up to expensive sights after a few weeks this is so I appreciate the expensive sight more, start with intermediate equipment then build up replacing one part at a time this way you put together a bow that you like and thank you nu sense for your videos

    My sight is an ink mark on a piece of masking tape. Yes, it's improved my vertical aim. For horizontal aim, I have to remember to line up my bowstring to my arrow point.

  • @NUSensei
    @NUSensei11 жыл бұрын

    The vertical bar determines how far you can put the sight up or down. This is particularly noticeable for longer distances with a lower poundage bow, which requires a significant trajectory. It's possible to move the bar down to get more sight settings, but that means less space to adjust for short range -- a problem when you shoot variable distances (e.g. competition rounds, field archery). Changing the extension also alters the available angle, but its mostly a weight/balance thing.

    This is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks for the video! I just started opening both eyes so I don't blink during release. I can see the target clearly as well. But I was really unsure about the string position related to the sight. This was a good reference thanks! (Also, my instructor lent me an older x-pert sight that is already bent and doesnt move vertically that well)

    Hi, I am looking for a new bow and your video is very usefull and go to the matter without any "sponsored" infos. I am looking for the Ultima but didn't know what's make the price but now I understand and even if I had some good result with my low end bow I think I will go for that Ultima as now I have the money for it. But I think it is more important when you shoot at long distances as one millimeter can do a real big difference, for low distances a mid range can do the job (except if you are at the Olympics's level :) ). Thanks for your video, I will look more of them to have an idea about my new Bow!

    I'm brand new to the Olympic discipline, but a long time and experienced compound target shooter. I took an 8 year hiatus and am just now getting back into the sport and trying some new things as well. One thing I noticed is that I don't see Toxonics sights like I used to. It appears they are still around but it just seems the company has lost it's edge in the target market. Any commentary on them? That said, both of my new rigs have Shibuya Ultimas. My old Hoyt Smoke still has my toxonics sight from back in the day. Thanks for your videos, by the way. They have been a huge help in pointing me in the right direction starting out with Olympic style shooting.

    There are three components: the sight block, the bar, and the part you have to screw onto the riser. Once you attach that last bit, all you have to do is slide the bar through and secure it with the large round knob.

    I have the Shibuya two click which I am always having trouble with. I had a stroke a couple of years ago making my brain turn it the wrong way and the windage knob on the side is alien! I do not know which way to finely tune the left and right so therefore do not use it but need to know which way towards me or away from me for left and right fine tuning. When holding the bow, with the string nearest me, do I turn it towards me for left or vice versa, You may find this a bit shocking but it is either that or buy the shibuya Ultimate as my two click has a bad habit of moving a lot! Hello NUSensei... Thanks so much for all your useful & helpful videos... I've learned a lot things about archery from you... :) If you don't mind i wanna ask a few questions, hope you willing to answer... 1. What is the best Pin Size for practicing competition target shooting? (ex: 0.019" / 0.029" / 0.039") 2. And what is the best Pin Color for practicing competition target shooting? (ex: Red / Yellow / Green) 3. I have found this combo price for Sight + Scope really match my budget... It's "Decut DC-RE Sight" + "Decut Tawant Scope" Have you know or heard some info about it? And do you recommended it NUSensei?

    Funny story. When I first started, I went through several cheap plastic sights. They kept falling apart, the rod kept coming loose and moving the sight each shot. The biggest complaint was because I needed to keep unscrewing the unit to make adjustments. It was a nightmare to use compared to sightless bows.

    Hi nusensei I just recently got my recurve sights, I understand for the most part of how to use it, what I don't understand is the horizontal extension bar. Does it matter how far out I move my sight? I have heard it has some implications on bow torque. Also naturally my arrow runs at a direction of 10 to 11 o'clock every release, this requires me to compensate horizontally, but my sight pin is too short (20 yards range, I guess it will be worse on longer range). Am I shooting wrong, or do I just have to change to a longer sight pin? (took some archery classes, no major complaints from the teachers, haven't took any advanced classes yet) Thanks nusensei, you da bes

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    8 жыл бұрын

    The horizontal bar mostly influences how fine the adjustments are. Further out and adjustments are finer; closer in and each adjustment results in greater vertical difference due to the distance from the eye. The flight of the arrow is less indicative of your sight and more likely something to do with your arrow (e.g. too stiff) or tune (e.g. nocking point too low).

  • @bbull71

    @bbull71

    8 жыл бұрын

    +NUSensei thank you for the response. I thought about the arrow being stiff and what not, but being in a class, I tried a couple different bow with different arrows already. They all resulted in the same arrow flight path, at least at 15-20 yards. I guess I'll just suck it up and learn to gut compensate it.

    It's mostly the weight difference. Aluminium is noticeably heavier than carbon. You may find that the weight will affect the feel and balance of the bow.

    I'm looking into getting the Shibuya Ultimate (carbon version). However I feel it lacks one feature and that is to be able to remove just the sightpin "block" while the alignment part remains on the sight. Doesn't this mean that you have to re-tune the elevation on your sight at each session? Sights like Sure-Loc seem to allow this. Or do you leave the entire sight on your bow when you're not shooting? Thanks

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    8 жыл бұрын

    I'm not sure what the problem is. As with all sights, the Shibuya has a sight tape. You record your elevation settings, then set them to that level when you are shooting. I'm not sure why you would need to retune after each session.

  • @DaveMoi

    @DaveMoi

    8 жыл бұрын

    I was told by a member from my archery club (I'm quite new to the sport) that I should look for a sight where the "sightpin blobk" can be removed while part of it says on. This would allow for the elevation to remain where it is. He told me that he needs to retune his first shots every time when he starts shooting because his sight-pin slides off to remove it like with the Shibuya. I just wanted to know your take on this? I'm planning to get my first bow set this week, a SB Forged + riser with SF Elite limbs (Carbon / form, I initially was going to get the fiberglass / foam, but I read that Carbon/Foam is the better choice), the Shibuya Ultima carbon sight, and the usual stuff that goes with a first package, a soft bow case (SF Backpack premium large or Legend archery backpack pro tour challenger), SF Elite bow stand, X7 alu arrows, etc... In your opinion, would you say this is a good package to start with? Thanks :)

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    8 жыл бұрын

    I'm detecting some bollocks with the sight block suggestion. This makes no sense. Archers do not always shoot at the same distance, so having a sight block that "stays" at the elevation serves no functional purpose. Additionally, it is normal for rounds to include 2 or more sighting ends, as archers will need to account for weather conditions on the day. It is normal for archers to record their sight marks (or memorise them), and the only reason to "retune" the sight is if he doesn't record sight marks. Your bow kit is fine. The sight is a bit of an outlier, since it is a top-end sight on a mid-range riser, but this isn't a bad thing, as it will serve you for your entire archery career.

  • @NUSensei

    I can't suggest sight settings without knowing the equipment, and it really comes down to the individual to calibrate their sights based on their equipment and training. The long distances used in Bhutan archery are beyond what these sights are designed for, so you are likely going to sight onto something above the target.

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    10 жыл бұрын

    Hunting sights are purposefully designed for outdoor use. They are often more durable and the sight housing is larger. Consequently, hunting sights place more emphasis on calibrating the pin(s), especially for multi-pin sights. The challenge of shooting in an outdoor environment is that elevation and distance and even lighting aren't static. Because of this, hunting sights have to have things like easy elevation/windage references; spirit meters and fluorescent markings. In contrast, target archery is static with clearly marked distances.Target sights tend to be simpler for this reason.

    I was told plastic flights are not at good as feather flights, but when I go out to the archery range I see people with very expensive target bows using arrows with plastic flights. Seems to me, if feather was actually better, they'd be using arrows with feather flights. What is your opinion and recommendation regarding arrow flights?

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    10 жыл бұрын

    While feathers generally correct flight faster, the larger profile creates more drag, which in turn affects range. For a target shooter expecting to compete at 70-90m, vanes offer vastly superior performance. Vanes are also more easily available, cheaper and easier to work with. Additionally, performance vanes like the spin-wings are almost as light. Consequently, vanes are the standard for target shooters, while feathers tend to be preferred by traditional shooters.

    Jerome Dechant If you are into traditional archery you will shoot off the shelf and not from a flipper rest. If you do this you will need to use feather fletchings and not plastic vanes as the vanes will not flatten as well as the feathers. This will affect your accuracy.

    ***** Thanks for your comment. :) My bow has one of those little plastic things which the arrow rests upon, I guess that is the "flipper rest" you mentioned. I don't know what sort of archery I am into other than going out, shooting at targets and having an enjoyable experience while meeting others who do the same thing. :) I'm not interested in bow hunting or any other kind of hunting for that matter. Because you constantly need to make adjustments. You have to move the sight between shots; you have to take the sight off when you finish. If the screw on the base comes loose, yes, use loc-tite to keep it on, but the sight block is the vulnerable point for a cheap sight.

    hi, i just got a sight, in second thought, it makes my shot much worse. without the sight, i could get a quite nice grouping and quite consistent shot, and with the sight, it gets all over the place and i cant even get the grouping right most of the time also, the setup is very troublesome do you have any tips on how to actually use the sight and how to set it up properly?

    Andre Nathan It sounds like you haven't yet developed a consistent sight picture. For the sight to aid you, you must consistently align the sight with the target. When you anchor, you need to check that the string is aligned with the same spot against the sight (such as on the right side of the sight ring). This effectively serves as your rear sight. If you don't have a clear string picture, you will not group well.

    Matias Delhom It's because your arrow doesn't have the velocity to make the distance. This could be because your bow is too light, or your arrows are too heavy. A 32# should be able to make 50m, but if you're using heavy arrows (like aluminium) or have a short draw length (in which case you'll be drawing far under 32#), your arrows won't make it to the target.

    +eyezon1975 I would say Yes but why?... This kind of sight will quickly run out of range on a recurve which has a much lower arrow velocity than a compound bow for which these sights are intended. The distance of adjustment will be very limited on a recurve whereas a recurve bowsight is easy to adjust quickly and will give a much more usable range of adjustment for greater distances for a recurve bow.

    +roythearcher I disagree with this opinion. Multi-pin hunting sights are not designed specifically for compound. The purpose of the multi-pin sight is to give the archer a range of reference points without having to adjust, as adjusting a single-pin target sight is not practical in the field. If you come across a deer, you won't have time to estimate distance, check sight marks and set the sight pin accordingly. Multi-pin sights are preset to set distances and the target can be acquired immediately. Also bear in mind that a bowhunter isn't likely to shoot that far beyond 30m, especially a recurve shooter who lacks the precision to guarantee an ethical kill shot, so having adjustment for greater distance is not needed. It is normal for recurve bowhunters to use a multi-pin sight.

    Hey everyone. I'm new to archery and I'm using a recurve bow with a sight on it. My question is, which eye do I use aim the sight? Right or left? I pull the string with my right hand. I am also pretty sure I'm right eye dominant (most comfortable aiming with my right eye). When I use my left eye to shoot I always shoot too much to the left, but when I aim with my right eye I can hit the target, but the string blocks the sight. Thank you everyone.

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    You aim with both eyes open. As a right-eye shooter, you will naturally acquire the sight alignment with the right eye. If the string blocks the sight, adjust your anchor position so that it doesn't.

  • @NUSensei

    Both eyes should be looking at the target. The right eye should not be "trying" to align the sight; the sight is a fuzzy overlay on top of the target, which should be in focus with both eyes. It's tricky to begin with (many people see double), but with practice you should be able to use both eyes to acquire the target.

    NUSensei Hey! :) I was referring to the picture at 3:58 - judging from the picture the pin exceeds a length of 2cm, which is not allowed according to the WA (FITA) target recurve rules: "11.1.5.2. The overall length of the sighting circle or point (tunnel, tube, sighting pin or other corresponding extended component) shall not exceed 2cm in the line of vision of the athlete." So I think one would have to shorten that pin. I'm just a beginner not really into competitions though, so please correct me if I'm wrong here! :) P.S.: Thanks for your reply! ^^

    why do recurve bows not have peep sights?

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    Peep sights are great if you can hold and align. The recurve shot process doesn't have the space for that fine-tuning option. The anchor point and string picture have to suffice as a rear sight.

    is there a difference between a recurve sight and a compound sight?

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    9 жыл бұрын

    Compound sights can usually equip a greater variety of pins and lenses. In target archery, compound bows are allowed to use magnified lenses, whereas recurve bows cannot. Compound sights are therefore more modular in that they can replace the lens and sight block as needed.

  • @JimmyZ951

    icic thanks :) last question, would you put a compound sight on a recurve bow?

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    9 жыл бұрын

    No. It's not legal for competition, and it's actually much harder to use on a recurve. Magnified lenses means that your movements are amplified. A compound bow can be held for longer, allowing the archer to take time to aim. A recurve shooter cannot hold steadily to make the magnified lens practical.

    I think it's odd there is a such a huge gap between price range. I don't want to spend $300+ dollars on a sight, but I would be willing to part with a more reasonable $100 or so for one. Yet no one seems to have capitalized at this price point. Is there just a monopoly on target sights with little competition to drive prices down?

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    9 жыл бұрын

    Dylan Mitchell Some would say that the mid-range prices are a false economy. Either you go big and get a good sight that is precise, reliable and never needs replacing, or you get by with a cheap sight and put up with the inconvenience. There isn't much incentive to go for mid-range, and it's kind of there to make the other choices more attractive. I wouldn't say here's a monopoly. There are three major manufacturers of target sight that are fairly competitive - Shibuya, Sure-Loc and Axcel. Most of the cost does come from fine manufacturing and quality control, while cheaper sights make more use of plastic.

  • @roythearcher

    @roythearcher

    8 жыл бұрын

    +NUSensei I would say that the intermediate sights are for those who cannot justify the cost of a top-of-the-range sight for their shooting but who need something better than an entry level sight. Budget is also a consideration for some and those who are not expert archers do not often have the funds or the sponsorship to be able to afford a £300 sight.($640 Aus).

    Two people can have the exact same set up and variables and still end up with different shot placement. I sight might help a little, but I don't think it's that helpful. I think learning to aim instinctively is a better choice.

  • @NUSensei

    @NUSensei

    5 жыл бұрын

    This does not objectively make sense. Fewer variables means that it comes down to shot execution - and yes, two people can still have different shot placement. However, the assertion that instinctive is "better" does not compute: you are *adding* variables to your shot process, so that an individual archer who does the same shot "exactly" the same will see different shot placement. What the sight does is that it eliminates a variable, so that shot placement can be more accurately attributed to specific parts of shot execution. If the sights are correctly set and the arrow goes high, we can say with more certainty that it is more likely caused by a variation in back tension and power; or if an arrow veers left, it's likely a release problem. While there are advantages to shooting instinctively (and generally feels more fulfilling), it's much more difficult to assess the cause of shot dispersion, since we have to evaluate the shot execution without being sure of exactly what the shooter's sight picture looks like. And when it comes to longer distances, instinctive just doesn't meet the expectations of a target shooter.

Once a person is consistent enough that their coach thinks they should compete then they can upgrade. Otherwise a person may be throwing out their $$$ on a fancy sight if they stop doing archery.
