    I really like this format, where you try out someone's bow. It's fun, it's a different perspective, and it really shows that you're more than just that weird booth in the mall... Keep up the good work.

    That bow is supposed to be able to shoot "ae gi sal" which are very short arrows shot with an overdraw attachment. It is going to like very light arrows. The "ae gi sal" for that bow would be about 35 to 40 cm long and would weigh about 3 grains/lb of bow weight. Should be leaving the bow at about 250 fps.

    Armin those Korean bow sleeve/quivers are supremely practical, imo. I can walk , run, ride a bike - all silently with arrows well secured to my hip bone. Slipping arrows out of the sleeve/belt and onto the string is incredibly natural because you don't have to change the spinal posture in between shots. If I could afford to send you one I would - they make shooting a better experience

    Some dude in my archery range had one of these in black, he shot it for three years and when he brought it out it was slightly twisted. Dude mentioned that the twist had to be fixed by bending the siyah in the opposite direction, which worked for the first few dozen shots before the bow completely exploded while he was drawing. Scary thing.

    This is a modernized carbon bow. It is a bow replaced with carbon instead of the buffalo horn. The original horn bow is "C" shaped Auxiliary equipment should be used on the thumb of the right hand. Equipment = Pod? thimble? The horn bow needs to be prepared before practice (about 30 minutes to an hour). Use heat. The horn bow has good performance but is difficult to handle. I used Google Translator.

It may help you to getting power and protect your hand. And second left foot should toward to the target and right foot should toward 45degree about 2 o'clock direction. It calls 'by jung by pal', and last if the line(sy wie) should touch your right cheen and left chest then it will help you to shoot straight. Thank you for introducing Korean archery~

The sleeve is wide so the arrows are held nicely. Thing is, you don't use the sleeve at all, unless you are transporting the bow. So this makes it more useful. And it's way quicker and more practical than a quiver in my opinion. But I would still wait for Armins reply on this, as he might have a better idea on the subject 😀

FACT Prof. Duvernay sells a higher quality product than all the others in this price range and lower. He's run a website and forum since longer than you've been alive, probably. My only relationship to him is that I bought one of his bows years ago and beat the shit out of it, and it never failed in any way. Before I make any comments, I feel I should make clear where I'm coming from. I have been practicing traditional Korean archery now for 18 and a half years. In that time I have used a fair number of bows, both the carbon similarities of hornbows and real hornbows. I currently have eleven carbon bows from four bowyers. I have had 14 hornbows from six different bowyers. Over time, I have come to trust the bows from one particular bowyer. Whenever, I get a new bow, I visit him. We go over the bow, make adjustments to it, then go to his archery club to test it out. We usually finish up by going out to a duck restaurant for what else, but a Korean duck bbq. We do a lot of talking about hornbows, be it about making them orshooting them. I have used hornbows now for 15 of the 18 and a half years, so I think I have a little bit of knowledge about them. That said, I still have a lot more to learn about them. Aside from my own hornbows, I have seen a lot of bows owned by other archers made by other bowyers that I haven't purchased from. Now down to talking about the bow you received. I recognized the sticker on the bow. That particular bowyer used to have a booth at the competitions we have for Goongdoh here in Korea. That was about a dozen years ago. I haven't seen him now for about half that time. I looked over the bows he was selling and quickly rejected them as not ones to seriously consider compared to the quality of other bowyers' products. The point of this is this: he was selling those bows as carbon bows. They were not hornbows. And I really regret saying this, but that bow you received is not a hornbow! An unstrung hornbow has a C shape, not a more or less flat line like the bow you have. The horn on a hornbow will have a curved surface from side to side. Your bow is flat. A hornbow will have sinew on the other side of the limbs. The sinew will also be curved and it will be covered with birch bark. That is not the case with your bow. Sorry, but someone sold you a bill of goods. They may have called it a hornbow, but it is not. In any event, don't let my little comment here, discourage you form enjoying the pleasure of using your bow. Best and many hits.

    It seems strange to be replying to one of my own comments, but several things have come to light in the past month that make it necessary to rethink a couple of the points I made. The first is to the recognition of the sticker placed on the bow. In checking the many bows that fellow members of our club have, I have found that two bowyers have similar stickers, so I may very well be talking about the wrong bowyer when I talked about one that was going to competitions many years ago. What I said may be true for one bowyer, but is not necessarily and may even be inaccurate/wrong for the other, that bowyer being the one marketing this hybrid hornbow. This brings me to my second point. I had the opportunity this past weekend to see and shoot one of these bows. Actual hands on far outweighs seeing the bow in a video. The background information about this bow may be informative. Another bowyer who is based here in Busan, Korea, brought one to our club. What the relationship is between him and the maker of these bows, I don't know, but he did provide a bit of information about the composition of these bows. They are a two layer laminate of carbon fibre and horn, with the horn of course being on the belly side. Visually, the birch bark covering the back appears real to sight and to touch. I've seen plastic imitation bark and this backing is not anything like that. The red, nock pads are the ones used on standard hornbows.. To the all-important component of the bow, the horn. The colour of the one I saw was a little light, tending towards the rarer white horn occasionally found on bows. The feel of the surface was that of horn. It is not the colour or texture of any carbon fibre I've seen on carbon similarities of hornbows. So, yes, I take back my comment that this is not a hornbow. I'd say this is a hornbow in that it has horn as a major part of its composition. However, for competition purposes here in Korea, it would still be classified as a carbon bow. To end on a lighter note, the bow we had was rated at 46 pounds. With my 30 inch draw, I was likely pulling 50-51 pounds. With my longer draw, it stacked a little towards the end of the draw. The bow I currently use shoots 45 pounds, so using the aim point for my 50 pound bow, I immediately was getting hits. A friend's bow is 55 + pounds. Using his normal aim point, he shot long. In fact, he should have been shooting short of the target. I can't think of any credible explanation for this. However, I can say it is a nice bow to shoot. Whether the bowyer will be able to sell many here in Korea, I don't know. The price is 350 000 won, that being 100 000 won more that a premium carbon bow and 300 000 won less than a standard hornbow. It can't be used in hornbow competitions as it lacks the sinew backing. The bow we had didn't have either the Association-approved carbon bow number sticker or the hornbow sticker. This may only be a case of the bowyer not bothering to put one on. Usually the bowyers put these stickers on at time of sale. Now this reply is far too long so I'll end it. However, I liked this bow after having handled and shot one and I hope anyone with one has an enjoyable, good time using it. Best and many hits.

    @@ArminHirmer After just a few shots now the the upper tiller is 1 cm longer than the lower. The lower one IS under more stress, right? But seeing as how you have never had this happen on a laminated bow to you, could it be a manufacturing error? So I haven't finished watching the video yet, but something that stood out to me: if this is a horn bow, doesn't the horn need to be made pliable by application of heat before stringing it? It seems that it was able to be strung without such a step. I had seen in a documentary that it was done with a hot plate in some instances.

    Vellikos No you don’ t have to heat the bow before stringing it, they don’t glue an entire slab of horn onto the belly, only thin, even slices, it can flex similar to a thin piece of fibreglass; you only heat it when making the bow, to bend it to a preferred shape and after it cooled it would stay in that shape.

  • @Taistelukalkkuna

    From what I understand, heating is applied if there is inconsistensy in bending of the bow. If one limb bends less than others, then heat is applied to make it more pliable.

Its bow cores are made from bamboo and wood(handle), Bow backs are made from carbon fiber. the different is the materials used in belly. (In my opinion, the type with bamboo belly preforms best, horn is too heavy) It doesn't have any sinew or animal glue on it. If you don't mind you are welcome to have a test of my real horn bows, they are authentic real horn bows. fine my works and products in the FaceBook page "horn bows" or "taiwanhornbow". Thank you.

  • @notapplicable531

    @notapplicable531

    5 жыл бұрын

    Really? Did you get the order of hornbow - other bow (carbon?) - all-day-long - half-day out of place? Carbon bows don't need to be tuned, are left strung all-day long with no need to re-tune them. However, strung, Korean hornbows tend to lose their shape if left for any length of time. 보궁 (boh goong(s)) (loops of leather about ten cm long) is/are always placed on the limb(s)/string immediately after tuning and/or finishing a 순 (soon) (a round of five arrows). If the bows are not going to be shot for any length of time, say an hour or more, the 궁 대 (goong dae) (the bow cover/sash/belt-quiver) is wrapped around the upper and lower limbs to help the bow keep its shape. When removed, the bow's shape will be checked and re-tuned, if necessary. That was the case for me last Saturday. I strung and tuned my hornbow at my 종 (jeong/club), shot a couple of practice 순, then wrapped my bow for the drive to another 종 for a competition. After a two-hour drive, I unwrapped my bow and found the lower limb had lost some of its bowing. I had to re-tune the bow.
